  • You can preserve fresh eggs for use 1 year down the road! In this video we will show you this basic technique called Water Glassing, which has been used historically to preserve eggs. We have had 100% success rate with this method since we started preserving eggs last April, and would like to share it with you!

We answered The Calling to leave our busy life in the city behind and embark on a homesteading adventure in the heart of the Canadian wilderness. Here at Camp Tamiyd we are building community with other believers who are sensing the same calling.
As we watch things in the world becoming more and more uncertain, we are making intentional steps to become more self-sufficient, develop strength of character, and restore the long-lost knowledge to our children that will enable them to stand through the last days of Earth’s history.
It is our goal to share our successes, our failures, and the little tid-bits we learn along the way to inspire and encourage you to consider a life in the country if you are feeling led in that direction. Please send us a comment below, or email us at: awildernesscalling@gmail.com

My grandmother gathered her eggs in a wire basket that was galvanized. Once she had a lot she would sink the eggs basket and all in a bucket of water and put in a cool place in the house. That is the only way she did it. I am glad to learn of the Pickling lime!
Sailors crossing the ocean in small sailboats coat their eggs in Vaseline grease which disallows oxygen getting to the shell.

Isn't it amazing how much wisdom our grandmothers had on how to provide for their families without relying as much on a grocery store down the road? Thank you for your comment! I have also heard about using a galvanized wire basket to put food down the well instead of using a refrigerator. So many alternative options out there!

Pickling Lime, aka: Calcium Hydroxide, Hydrated Lime, Builders' Lime, Slack Lime. If you wanted to save some money you can just buy hydrated lime from the builders supply or lumber yard in a 50 lb sack, it's the same stuff. Thanks for posting ladies.

Thank you , I do wash my eggs if they are dirty ie: dirt lol I use only cold water and wash rag when it's raining eggs get dirty and chickens tend to kick them around sometimes but mostly during wet weather........good job God Bless and thanks
One more thing please, if your eggs come out with any poo on them it is because of a parasite they pick up and is completely normal, feed has chemical to kill it unless specified chemical free but most IS NOT, use apple cider vinegar in their water you can give to the herd lol, it is not toxic and they love it and your eggs come out PERFECTLY clean it is a good way to watch for coop health. Also when chicken has parasite their hood changes color they tend to be body sensitive to everything even stress.
