  • Join us for a short how-to video on growing garlic from bulbils - the tiny seeds that develop out of scapes on hard-neck garlic. It is amazing how you can multiply your garlic harvest with this method!

Yes, I’m hopeful that this will be a very economical way to expand our crop. We’ll plan to post an update next year. Thanks for watching! 😊

Garlic bulbils are not seeds. Garlic does not grow flowers with pollen or ovaries to produce seeds. It propagates vegetatively through bulb division or bulbils. When left on the plant the bulbils will scatter in about a 3 foot circle around the mother plant when the top dries out in the fall. If left undisturbed for enough years a single garlic plant can multiply into a sizable patch.

Nice video. The initial purchase can be pretty pricey when buying seed garlic. Overall though after the first year you’re usually set. At this point ours can produce enough to leave plenty for seed, fresh eating and drying. Usually you’ll get around 10-12 plants per bulb depending on the size. So we bought a few pounds our first year for seed and haven’t ever needed to purchase any since. In our area we can grow soft neck garlic also which doesn’t don’t have scapes. But it does store a little longer once it’s dried. Over all garlic is one of my favorite things to plant. It’s great for you medicinally and it’s easy to grow. It loves super rich soil and we usually top ours with 4” of chips if we are planting in a back to eden bed. Otherwise we often use straight compost which works really well also. In the past I accidentally left some scapes on a few of my bulbs when I hung them up to dry. I had baby garlic growing everywhere around my shed. 🙂 can’t wait to see how these turn out in the summer next year.

Thank you for sharing your experience! This is only our 3rd season growing garlic, so much to learn. Glad to hear they thrive in a Back To Eden environment, as we are trying to implement this in our garden as well.
