David Ortiz in my opinion, even as a Yankees fan that i am, deserves to be mentioned in the same group of players as one of the greatest baseball players to ever play this game
Went to a game between these 2 at Yankee Stadium. Was very easy to boo most of Boston but.. when Ortiz came up, it felt wrong. I’m a native New Yorker and I love my Yankees, but growing up in New England, I love Ortiz
As a lifelong Yankees fan I wholeheartedly agree. My mom and I were huge Yankee fans during the 2000s but she always loved David Ortiz. We had a game where I used to mimic the batting stances of various MLB stars when I was little and she'd always guess Big Papi correctly.
I actually got to watch literally the entire Red Sox career of Ortiz, as I followed the team very closely from about 2003 to 2019. Everyone knows about the 2004 post-season, but its impossible to overstate how special a player Papi was, especially in 2005-06 when he was at the height of his clutch abilities in the regular season. During those years when he came up in a tight spot you just KNEW he was going to win the game. Dude had a WPA of 8.66 and 7.80 in those years - that is UNREAL clutch ability.
The first World Series run it seemed like every time Ortiz got up with two outs he’d hit a bomb . Rarely did he miss that post season. It was almost magical to watch that season as a New England native.
@@ODIN_xx Well, sort of but not really. Up until 2019 I had lived in Portland, ME and has been a big fan of the Portland Sea Dogs first and foremost, which was Boston’s AA affiliate from 2003 onwards. All those guys I got to see when they were still young and making a name for themselves at a very small ballpark, so it meant a lot more to me when I would later get to see them on TV and succeeding on the big stage in Boston - or elsewhere. As a lifelong Yankees fan, I will never, EVER forget David Ortiz' 2004 playoff run. I remember like it was yesterday, being 12 years old when the Yankees went up 3-0 on the Sox that year. Everyone in the city came out riding around with brooms citywide calling for a sweep. Needles to say I hate the Red Sox, but David Ortiz will ALWAYS have my respect for how he willed that team not only past the Yankees who had owned them, but all the way to a championship. ✊🏽

Because of the steroid controversy I didn't agree with him making the Hall at first since he was one of the players named in the report that was suppose to be anonymous in 2003 test for steroids along with ARod. Do you even know what young Bonds and Sosa looked like? They were both slim with a muscular build who could go 30-30. Then they ballooned into sluggers. Ortiz was always a heavy set guy. Not only that, the commissioner has come out and said the MLB has zero proof of any steroid use on Ortiz’ part. Yeah I get that! My thoughts when writing that were that the Yankees continued to win the division up until 2007; and even though they never won the WS during that time, they were still the team to beat, and the Red Sox came so close but just barely missed out (especially when they hadn’t been to the WS for a long time). It was also setting up the story for 2004. I probably should have just said “for the next year” rather than “for years to come” though, you’re right
