Joan Rivers would never have had a career today, she made fun of the painful things that exist around us to get through painful things and mostly made fun of her own shortcomings, so self deprecating, knowing laughter is the best medicine. But now you can’t make a joke about race, color, religion, gender or risk being erased, what a dull, boring, and over sensitive society we’ve become, not knowing 50 years ago almost every kid got picked on at some point and we never got hugs or coddled when we went home in tears, no participation trophy if we failed miserably at anything, it only made us stronger, try harder, and achieve more. We now realize that the bullies were really the weak ones and didn’t amount to much. But there’s no way to teach kids what you know 50 years later. You can pick them up when they fall, but too much will make them too fragile, dependent, boring without a sense of humor, which is why 20 something’s are triggered by everything and tend not to be funny.

What Conan says about so much care and attention being given to children resonates with me. Children are so much better at navigating life than adults give them credit for. My mother always said kids only need 2 things: Someone to run to when they scrape their knee, and cake on their birthdays. That's it. Obviously that's grossly simplified but children aren't pieces of clay to be moulded, they're plants that just need water and nutrients to grow into a complete person.

The thing I love about Bill Burr when he goes on these rants is he says all the things we think or feel... but know we shouldn't. He's right. Sometimes the level of "tragedy" reaches a point where it becomes absurd. And laughing about things you can't change is a healthy survival strategy. Processing everyone else's tragedy as though it was your own leads to burnout and compassion fatigue.

My dad lost one of his best mates when I was about 11, so my family went to the funeral. My brother and I were watching the procession and even though it's really sad, my dad was crying, I made note of the priest handing out bread and water to kids without gloves or seemingly washing his hands. My brother starts pissing himself, I think even more so because he knew he should laugh in that situation, then because he started laughing, I started pissing my self, my mum then quietly started chuckling, while trying to tell us to shut up haha, my dad then started laughing.

One of the most retold stories about my childhood is about a vacation my family took to Colorado. I was probably 3-4 years old. I saw this guy playing with a cool yoyo in a gift shop and I thought it was so cool. I asked my parents to buy me one and they said no, so I started wail crying for about an hour straight screaming "I wanna yoyo".
Eventually I finally calmed down and stopped screaming. At this point my dad turns to me in the car and said "hey lotrfan, do you want a yoyo?" and I said through my tears "yes". Then he says "WELL YOU CAN'T HAVE ONE". I start wailing again and the entire car is pissed at my dad. Absolute legend.
