Wii Startup Disc - What was it? How did it work?

  • In 2006, some Wiis had a "Startup Disc" listed on their boxes' content, but this disc was nowhere to be found, and the only actual game disc in the boxes was Wii Sports.
Today, we discover what this was all about.
Thanks to Bushing for the great hacking work

I worked at a Nintendo warehouse in Redmond, Washington, USA during the Wii release. I played Wii sports a few months before the Wii was released.
I worked different areas of the warehouse. When I was on an assembly line of installing the operating system on the Wii and running a system diagnostics check. I remember there was a disc we inserted and also a sd card like. The disc installed the operating system and the card would run some kind of diagnostics debug that the engineers made. Whenever there was a system error, we would take it over to a setup table so the engineers can further troubleshoot things.
I worked with the teams for the 1st million Wiis. And I do believe remembering that all the Wiis did come with a startup disc and the teams actually used that one in the box for installing the OS. And we booted up Wii sports to the menu screen just to be sure it does work. And we put the disc back in the sleeve and back into the box. After our million Wii goal, we were ahead of schedule so I moved to the refurbishment warehouse working with teams of repairing GameCubes and Nintendo DS and advance 2 months before Wii release. And I was getting Wiis sent from the Wii warehouse for repairs, or actually I was getting called to go and pick them up from the other warehouse haha.

@@trolojolo6178 I remember the sd-card-like would install the Wii firmware. The Wii would reboot. And then we selected option to run diagnostics. Then used the startup disc that was in the box. Same startup disc was put back into the box for release. We didn't have a bunch of scratched up startup disc laying everywhere. We were just assigned the firmware cards and must be returned to the engineer desk.

Extras of my story. I also worked at a different Nintendo warehouse in North Bend, Washington before I worked at the Redmond location. There is a gaming room at the North Bend that has about 10 to 15 gaming stations. But it's always packed full. So after my first 2 days, I just stopped going to it. There is also a locker room and showers for anyone that camps out seasonal. I actually wish my current job had washers and showers because of all the roommates I live with. So annoying when I'm in the middle of trimming my beard and someone comes knocking on the bathroom door.

    • @spacefightertzz
      @spacefightertzz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Extras part 2:
There are about 8 or 10 microwaves in our break room. And usually the microwaves are packed. So ya might have to wait up to 8 minutes just to get to a microwave.
A lot of us went to the nearby 711 for lunch. Very pricey to be eating there every day. Well now that wages are a bit better now in 2018-2022 than it was in 2006, it might not be too bad.
And next door to Nintendo warehouse was a digital arts school called digipen. I heard that digipen moved locations according to an old girlfriend of mine, who had a cousin that was enrolled to digipen.

@@michaelepica3564 I think it was the licensing. It's also why the original Xbox couldn't play DVD videos out of the box because Microsoft didn't want to pay licensing fees on every console sold, and instead worked around it by making a separate remote with a dongle to enable playback which they paid the license fees on instead.
Considering that it got into the software, it probably was a late change. Also if you think about it being capable of playing DVDs, then the name and design of the Wii Remote makes a lot more sense. A power/standby button is a weird thing for a console controller, but makes perfect sense for a DVD player, and the WiiMote had TV remote functionality which was only used in a Japan only TV Guide Channel, & would also help explain why Start and Select became '-' and '+' symbols to double as a volume control in that mode.

The actual eBay listing that Bushing found was almost certainly someone outside of Nintendo HQ assembling working consoles from spare parts. Only reason why it would have a serial number from 2008 and a disc drive from 2007. Nintendo would have either updated the console themselves or junked it.

So I bought the Wii day one… stood in line, got my ticket from target, went back and got my Wii….. and my Wii was one of the broken ones. I actually called multiple stores with kiosks to ask if they still had discs and a GameStop said they literally got rid of a “start up disc” they had two days before. I had to call Nintendo and they gave me a box to send it back and they would send me a working Wii. I still have a really crappy picture I took off my CRT of the screen. Couldn’t play my Wii for a week. It was torture!

7:50 that's crazy, because I do vaguely remember having this menu when we first got the Wii where you couldn't access any of the channels yet. I don't think we had Wi-Fi either, so I'm not sure if we connected to the internet to update, but I do remember one of the games we got (either Wii Sports or Twilight Princess) had an update on the disc and the console forced you to update when you put it in the drive. It's all very fuzzy though since I was literally 7 years old at the time.

To elaborate on something you mentioned: the release candidate for 1.0 requires the Z button on GCN port 4, or else it will just boot straight into the disc drive (I wonder what happens if there's a system update on the disc?) and iirc will also not listen to the Home button in such cases. This is probably because they had no choice but to also use the prototype firmware builds in their prerelease demonstrations and samples. After all, people can't sneak a peek at the unfinished Wii Menu if the system summarily refuses to show it in the first place.

    1. Maybe the Console's Shell was from a 2008 console and somehow, components from a 2006-2007 console were put into that 2008 shell from another Wii.
    2. Maybe it was a mistake on Nintendo's part. I got no further ideas for this one

I worked in retail when the Wii launched. When we got Wii kiosks to set up, the Wii that was included showed the same "Insert fancy disc" screen, and it came with a special disc that turned that Wii into a kiosk, where it would boot directly into the kiosk environment, and stopped it from booting any other games. The instructions that came with the disc said to destroy the disc after the Wii booted into the kiosk environment. I've never see one of those discs in the wild before, only when I was setting up that kiosk. I was big into console modding and game preservation at the time (still am) and always wondered if I was holding something in my hands that would be rare or impossible to find in the future. I've never even seen a picture of what the disc looked like on the internet.

This just reminded me of a recent move I had a few years ago, and I opened up a box from the back of a closet that hadn't been opened in at least a decade, and one of the treasures inside was a Wii Netflix disc. Lmao!

I remember the Wii launch day so well!!! I was working at GameStop that day and we had someone bring in a Wii for trade in, hours after it had launched!
The dead giveaway was the Wii and all the accessories were in that foam packing that they use in the box 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ it was totally STOLEN!! my
manager still told us to take the trade, and no mention of calling the authorities.
Worse part was, we weren’t able to buy it 😅😢😂 the policy for Wii at the time was they had to be refurbed because they had internal storage. Crazy story!! 🤣🤣😊

I didn't get a wii until 2008 which I'm not surprised why I never got this menu and yes I still have it to this because of the Virtual Console games I have on it.
