You made a good effort to explain the tweezers story, but I want to make a few corrections.
The GCN had the PowerPC Gekko CPU. The GCN motherboard also included 24MiB of RAM (SPLASH) and 16MiB of auxillary RAM (ARAM). The former was physically addressable, while the latter was only accessible via the Audio Interface.
The Wii had the PowerPC Broadway CPU, which operated PowerPC code virtually identically to the Gekko. Its main differences were a higher clock speed, plus embedding the 24MiB of SPLASH (renamed to MEM1) and the Starlet coprocessor inside its die. As for the motherboard, ARAM was removed, while 64MiB of physically addressable RAM (named MEM2) was added. When in GameCube mode (MIOS), MEM2 was made inaccessible to the CPU by Starlet, and the legacy Audio Interface would use the lowest 16MiB of MEM2 to simulate ARAM for GCN games.
Team Twiizers used GameCube homebrew to peek into MEM2 to extract private keys, 16MiB at a time. And yes, this was made possible by using the tweezers to bridge data lines.

@@iamsosillythatyoutubewillbanme4:3 is a video aspect ratio that was primarily used for television sets back before the 16:9 "widescreen" aspect ratio became the new standard aspect ratio for the majority of current modern displays.
When we made the jump to make HD video resolution the new standard resolution, that was when 16:9 became the standard and replaced 4:3.
I thought my ipad was using the 'fill to screen' thing when I saw it in the moment 😭

Not many times I find myself completely immersed in a youtube documentary, enough to put on fullscreen mode and enjoy. Don't get me wrong I love yt documentaries, but I always watch them while scrolling amazon or drawing. Your dialogue is engaging and your script was very fun, the editing kept me entertained thoroughly and i learned more about a topic I barely knew about !

I love how this video feels like a love letter to that very specific era of gaming history so many people grew up with. It's surreal to think of how accessible and influential these mods were, and this lil' tune is probably one of those reasons. Thank you for making another great video.

I'm so happy someone finally made a video discussing the homebrew channel music. Its kinda hard to describe but every since I jailbroke my wii I've always been fascinated with custom wii banners and their music, especially ones from the early wii hacking days. This is probably one of my favorite videos of all time. the style, the humor and how you managed to explain the entire situation very well! I wasn't born early enough to know about the homebrew channel yet I still got invested in it!
This video is amazing, it's literally what I've dreamt of when thinking about making content for my own channel, beautiful graphics that give personality to the content, large extension of the content spread in structured segments and with breaks for humour and breaths of fresh air before going to the most technical parts of the content, tremendous narration and genius way to tell the history, man I'm even loving the title, simple question, but that stucks in your brain, how can a jingle song from a hack Wii channel be so interesting to give substance to a 30 minute video about the theme, the aspect ratio, never, never in my life team have i enjoyed more watching content at 4:3 aspect ratio, though at times I thought it was 3:2, along with the graphics, edits and animation and all the dynamisms of the art in the video it simply made it amazing for making the content simply pop-up and stand out from the average TH-cam content.
Honestly love this video, everything about it is simply great, it's inspiring for somebody that has been thinking quite a lot about making content, this is really the way I'd like people to feel and think about my content if I've ever make it.

This video was a random recommendation to me by TH-cam while I was trying to find one last video to watch for the night and when I saw the title I thought "good question, Imma watch this" and I enjoyed it. I think the Wii Homebrew Channel music still holds up with its rhythm and vibe that it gives.
The backstory on how theWii got hacked in the first placeand the creation of the Homebrew Channel (the events that took place, the people involved, the other drmr, etc) was nice as it gave the context necessary to piece all the details together.

Solid video. I grew up with the wii and always had an interest in modding (but I never could as I was super young and didn’t have a computer or the slightest idea of how to make anything work.) some time has passed and now I have a computer and I’ve learned a bit more about modding but I don’t have a functional wii anymore. I’ve been considering getting one so I could finally see what I missed for so many years.

I just wanted to say thank you because that could sound silly but I consider this type of work important for history. Having the opportunity to know more about the person who created this 15 sec loop I've been obsessed with for years is incredible. That just shows how music can left a mark on us and sometimes we simply create masterpieces that will be defining.
I really became a fan of this video format where people search for answers to something enigmatic in the video game world where people are usually anonymous. I remember this video where a guy searched for what the background image of a test stage which is only accessible in Smash Melee's code was. The answer was very interesting. And all of this is possible thanks to the Internet. Crazy world we live in. Time to go back to listen to a 10 hour loop of the Homebrew Channel music now.

I love the 4:3 format used in this video, I wish more videos on TH-cam experimented with non-widescreen aspect ratios. It makes the video inherently compelling & it looks great, considering it fits with the Wii screen recordings.
4:3 and 16:10 >> 16:9. On standard displays, horizontal real estate is far more important than vertical

But seriously, this was, as always, outstanding work, especially for such a short (albeit very catchy) tune.
In fact, you've inspired me to do a bit of my own investigation over another short piece of music that has been stuck inside my head lately: your actual outro music. Incredibly catchy tune, I just _needed_ to know where it came from.
TL;DR: It's the "Star" (or sometimes called "Shooting Star") ringtone from early 2000's LG phones.
I began looking for the "Bee Line" cover as you state in the video's description. Its author is so generous, they even shared the DefleMask project file where they made the tune as well as the exported .VGM file! (I'm just waiting for someone to play this cover on actual arcade hardware, as the YM2151 wasn't all that uncommon, and the drum samples could be ported to any PCM sampler hardware, or they could even be synthesized on the YM2151 itself with some work.) The VGM is a bit broken though, as VGMplay complains that there are some issues with loops or whatever, and after reaching the end of the file, it just crashes instead of looping the tune forever. A bit annoying, but I'm sure a bit of hex-editor magic later could fix it.
Anyway, I started looking up what this "Bee Line" was and what it had to do with the tune. I landed on a video (RAhd888iyTU) which plays the ringtone directly from the phone (no cover, this is the original). However, the video's author pointed out that "Bee Line" has nothing to do with the actual song, it was apparently just a name of a Russian GSM provider which people have associated with the song, and that the song (as they have said) is called "LG Sound / LG Tune". (that might be true in an alternate universe, but it has a different name here - I did not know this when I was still searching though.)
However, I would not be satisfied until I got the raw original file which the phone used to play the ringtone (I suspected at that time that it was just MIDI, and I was actually partly right, you'll see later). I kept searching (with that partly-false "LG Sound / LG Tune" name), and I was unable to find the original file (of course, with such a generic name), but I managed to stumble upon another video (W6Gbx2kezec) playing the exact same tune, but on several other LG phones, which means that this was quite a common tune for LG phones back then.
Fun fact: now, after listening to the original recordings from those old LG phones, you might think that it sounds a lot like something that would come straight out of a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis or something, and you'd be very much correct. These old LG phones use sound chips from Yamaha that contain an FM synthesizer inside (the acronym is weird, as the chips actually use phase modulation and _not_ frequency modulation, but whatever, it's the standard now to call this FM instead of PM), which is the exact same underlying technology for generating sound that was also used in the old Mega Drive (as well as the YM2151, the chip which was used for the cover that inspired this entire hunt for the original). So if the original recordings' instruments sound somewhat familiar, now you know.
However, now that I have the exact phone model numbers where this same tune was used, I began searching again. I stroke luck when I looked up "LG G3100 ringtone". The first search result was a video (jbkFdARyYa4) where this exact tune (among all others from that phone) was being synthesized on a computer! I looked at the comments, and lo and behold, they have shared with us the original files (if you're looking for the file, it's 03_ShootingStar.mmf - that's where I learnt the ringtone's actual name)! Hallelujah!
Well... sort of. These files were in some strange format with the extension .MMF, which I had not heard of up until that point. According to Wikipedia, it is the Synthetic music mobile application format, or SMAF for short (one of the "M"s apparently went on a holiday or whatever). It is, in essence, an upgraded version of MIDI (so I wasn't that wrong with my previous assumption after all) with enhanced support for custom-defined FM instruments, PCM samples and even graphics data (???). What was worse, I couldn't find any software (for Linux) that could play this weird, obscure and very much obsolete format. FFplay just tells me "MIDI like format found, unsupported" and that it is "Not yet implemented in FFmpeg, patches welcome", and my MIDI players refused to even open it. Great.
The author of that video used a piece of software called MidRadio from Yamaha themselves, so I wanted to give that a go. I found some MidRadio 7.2 from the Internet Archive, so I grabbed that, installed it on my Linux system through Wine, loaded the .MMF song, and... no audio output from the program. What a letdown.
I then installed the same version of MidRadio onto my Windows 7 virtual machine, and that (even though the UI is all messed up, as the software is only in Japanese) seems to finally work and play the file fine! Hooray!
Aaaand that's it for now. I just need to find some sort of a way to convert that 5 kB .MMF file into something more intelligent that my other audio players could handle (perhaps some sample-based tracker format, like .XM?) so that I can play this song on loop for hours on end, while I do some other work (as I do not want to have that VM running all the time, it is making my laptop so loud that I am almost getting afraid that it might just fly away). Or maybe I could just convert it into MIDI to make the cycle complete! :D

***UPDATE***: I managed (through a program called PSMPlayer and a bit of hex-tweaking, as the original .MMF file is copy-"protected" - it literally only needed to change one byte to 00 in order to work) to convert the original .MMF file into MIDI!

(replace the (dot) and (forwardslash) with their respective symbols, obviously)
It sounds especially nice with the Fluid R3 soundfont, as it provides a nice clean square wave. Of course, the default Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth that comes with Windows since the 90s, sounds like a Fisher-Price toy, as it always does.

The Wii was my first console ever, and I got it when I was 11. I was enamored by the Wii Homebrew Channel and was at the age where I wanted to be a cool hacker, and it was a gateway for me to learn so much - including low-level programming and learning the C and C++ languages, which are skills I still use to this day working with Linux.
It's always gratifying to see this kind of content, especially the application of investigative journalism for software/computer engineering topics, as well as documenting history in video form. Thank you for this video!
