  • WOW! I don't know where to begin here. Not only is this kit sporting a LOT of confusion, but an identical kit from 4 years earlier has OTHER problems and anomalies itself!
Come with me on this adventure and see what's really going on with the AMT 1969 Ford Torino Cobra Fast Back.

Interesting, I believe the big wheel arches are remnants when this car was a modified stocker like the 65'Ford Fairlane and others, those kits have the big slicks. I'm going to get this torino kit for the nascar cars I have been building lately. Thanks for sharing this video Trev, take care and have a nice weekend

The rear cut-out lines are actually remnants from the 1968 Dragster kit, as are the chrome plated exhaust dumps. I'm making a full review and build video for this kit, so I've seen a LOT of articles, pictures and videos recently.

They are just working off the old mold. Saves them time and money, but I agree...if inflation is driving up the prices of models, we should be getting the quality with the higher price. Sadly, there are more old tools out there than there are new ones. Your best bet is to buy kits from AMT that you know the tools are new, but that means you would be buying car subject matter from 2024. (Modern cars).

I think the combination of pegs forward,to the new mould position and redrilling behind axle as the simplest, other than Willi saying make slots, solution. I'm still checking for simple chassis swap but all will need a lot of cutting to fit. I do have a concern about the body of the newest release having a dished in areas in the wheel arch of the left fender. I've seen other builds of it with this problem. I also noticed the massive cut-away line for massive rears. Do you think it's a remnant of the original 68 release?

    • @MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage

I found the original kit's instructions. It was a choice of factory stock or drag racer, so there was some pretty tall Goodyear Blue Ovals back there.

The 1990 ERTL edition has the Cobra rear bumper and the Round2 2022 edition has the Torino rear bumper that i have!So they all mixed and matched without caring! But both have the same chassis!Be carefull not to push the chassis too far back, because the rearbumper will not fit anymore!dont push more then 2mm!And beware! The decklid on the side were the Cobra emblem is(right) is half a mm lower then the left side so there will be a gab between rearbumperpart and decklid on the right! And the hole for the left frontwheel has a different height then the right!Aaaaaaand the whole chassis is not really straight!Be very carefull with alligning the engine bay frames to the chassis framesand make sur that it sits in the middle on the back of the chassis(at the rearbumper)This Kit is not that easy to build! It has many 😵‍💫😵 and its very fiddly to make it right! And the newest edition is a flashmonster and has sinkmarks where you dont need it!!Happy building and good luck,Trevor! To you too Pete!

Not really. They are just using the molds they have on hand because tooling new ones cost money. However, they do listen to what the modeler wants and many act to bring out what they have in their warehouse for the model builder.
There are a few AMT/MPC kits that have issues that should be corrected. The MPC 1967 Pontiac GTO and this AMT Ford Cobra kit are two that really need to be recreated from new steel molds and a good CNC milling machine.
