- Alena sings traditional folks songs and plays the sape.
Alena Murang has learnt the traditional art forms of the Kelabit, Kenyah and Penan people since the age of six, including dancing, weaving, design, singing and playing music instruments. Presently she is a full-time practitioner and pioneer of art forms from Borneo, seeking to learn from tribal elders in the Ulu Baram (the upper Baram river near the Malaysian - Indonesian border) villages.
Some of the songs she learns are remembered by only a handful of elders from her grandparents’ generation.
Her artwork is also inspired by the indigenous communities and the natural environment of Borneo, where she grew up in. Using paint and music as her main mediums, she seeks to tell the stories of her ancestors, who hold the knowledge of the rainforests, age-old myths, and a simple and honest way of life, as well as the stories of the hardships they face today.

Sape bagi saya setiap petikan dan alunan yang melodi yg di keluarkannya mengingatkan saya mengenai budaya saya,asal-usul saya, kehangatan bersama keluarga saya, dan mengingatkan saya mengenai nenek moyang saya yang telah banyak berpindah-randa oleh head hunted ,dulu tinggal bersama di satu kawasan tetapi terpksa berpecah kerana wabak penyakit serta juga serangan head hunted ,saya merasa kesengsaraan ,ketakutan mereka ketika itu melalui alunan sape. Yang paling penting, jika kita mengerti setiap baris lirik lgu ini kita akan tahu maksud lagu ini...lagu ini mempunyai maksud yang mendalam. Saya kagum, sbab masih ada lagi pewaris warisan kita...keep it up Alena, don't listen to others who ever say tht you are colonizer just ignore them,their jealous because their can't sing and play the sape as well as you...i like my culture known by the world.keep it up Alena!!!

Saya malay swk n memang suka dgr muzik sape. Klu dgr org main live instrument ni mesti saya cari pemain nya sbb nak tengok dia main live. Drum..gitar..kibod n flute saya boleh main..tp sape saya tak berpeluang nak main. Rs nak blaja main sape pun ada. I love my borneo

Kayan is in my bloodline. This sape music makes my hair stand on ends .. i guess it resonates with my inner Kayan. I also know now where my dance grooves caome from. Love the music!
