- Imagine a human bagpipe-a person who could sing a sustained low note while humming an eerie, whistle-like melody. For good measure, toss in a thrumming rhythm similar to that of a jaw harp, but produced vocally-by the same person, at the same time. Recorded at TEDxBaltimore January 2016.
Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, Alash are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture.

It's strange you should say that for its the exact opposite with me. I was very accepting and liberal when young and the older I get the more conservative I become. That said, I find this music extraordinary and strangely beautiful.

The human throat is a wonder
For month I've tried to do what they did and I found that you need to put pressure on the back and lower part of your throat. It's gonna sounds like groaning at first but with practice you can make the whistling sound with your throat. It work for me. And make sure you drink some warm water before practicing, that will make it easier. Also you need to shape your mouth like you want to whistle.
I was teaching in Russia in 1999-2000 and at that time a work permit was gold and we could travel anywhere freely. In Tuva, we went to tourist information which had been replaced with a Mary Kay Cosmetics office and they located a University teacher who could speak English. She brought us to her home for lunch and we expressed an interest in hearing throat singing and soap stone carvings. About an hour later, a man arrives and shows us some beautiful carvings and there, on the sofa, gives us a one man throat singing concert. It was astounding as you can imagine.

Anthony Try Scottish pipes and drums, like from Albannach, or Nordic music from Heilung, channel of same name. Extremely tribal. This sounded more like a lullaby.

Their 2nd song moved me. Tuvan throat singing is one of those gems of human existence that once you find, you feel more connected to the earth somehow. Like an ancient part of you understands, even if there is a language barrier.

I do throat singing, kargyraa style, in order to sing you don't need that much lung capacity cuz the air you need is very "subtle"

i like how the beatboxer at the end didn't try to dominate or overpower the throast singers. he blended and improved the sound. it was amazing
You can instantly tell by the way he watches them before coming in, that he is tuning himself into their sound in order to add his own in a musically mature way, as you said, rather than try take the spotlight as one could easily expect. This is an aspect of playing music freely with others (jamming) I have struggled with ever since 8 years of learning classical Guitar. Things are getting better but it's hard to break old habbits: getting used to jamming/improvising on your own vs playing all the intricate and beautiful pieces ingrained in my memory or breaking out of the comfort of having a sheet of music in front of me.
***** the struggle is called ego and pride. It's really a huge hindrance to Good music

Just because you like this group more doesn't mean they're better than any other bands. A capella takes talent and effort too, and it often requires special singing techniques just like these men use.
Kailee Walden, A Capella is easy, Tuvan Throat Singing is hard. Fucking Hard. Harder than a Pedophile in a Playground. Only a few learn it even in Tuva, because it's a master-student one on one training, if the student doesn't perform well the master will throw him out and find another student.

As a Canadian I travelled in the former Russian Mongolian Republic and I loved the Nadaam Festival in Ulan Batar, the Gobi Desert, the Steppes, the northern forests and lakes near the Russian border. I loved your music, your nomadic traditions, your food and I wished you that would become a country proud of your traditions and looking forward to your future.
Mongolia and Tuva are different places though. Mongolia was never "former Russian", it is an independent state. And the Republic of Tuva is a part of the Russian Federation
I didn't realise the human voice could achieve the sounds that they are able to make. It is truly beautiful and touches the soul.

Well thats the thing is because alot, like ALOT of turks were part of mongolian military. Infact subutai one of genghis best generals was tuvan.

They are Chingis Khaan's brothers. Tuvan is located in southern part of the Russia, but they are Great Mongolian Nationality. Before, their place were under Mongolia. Proud of World Mongolians, who are living in different places of the world. .

Well, I would imagine that they allowed him to be there. I would say they are friends. His name is Shodekeh, and he is a professional beatboxer. And yes, I think while it is interesting, it is not really what they should go for. After all, if it mixes with other styles, it is not pure Tuvan anymore. I also truly think that it did not enhance what the trio was accomplishing. It was more distracting than enhancing. But... on a musical level, I can relate to the attractiveness of cross-fertilization, and I would say that beat boxing is akin to what the Tuvans do... so there... lol. The fourth guy was trying to blend in as much as possible.
They have this song with the beatboxing in their album, so I assume they are very okay with this. I honestly don't think it sounds bad, it just adds some percussion to the tune and also is a cool fusing of old and new (kind of like electro swing!)
The low note sung by the guy in the middle in the second song was an A1 just so people know

Bart Van Wunsel I get you, so instead of counting the space inbetween the two cities, you calculate the space of the earth in a head band kind of shape. I think you'd have to explain it that way in order for people to get it though. Usually when people say "from ____ to ____" they mean the space inbetween.

I was washing dishes when the second song was playing and I legit had to stop what I was doing and listen. I lost count how many times I replayed it. I had to find the album immediately afterwards.
This is amazing. My mind, as a student of music, a singer (sometimes), a dancer, a piano player...my mind can't comprehend how they make all those sounds at once.

These guys. Are the real deal, not sure why beat box guy joined in, but this is some deep deep spiritual talent. I'm a professional musician and not easily impressed. Arudawakening listen to The Hu band which is taking over the world by storm. I think as a musician you’d find it fascinating. The is from Mongolia and blends ancient music with metal rock. Unbelievable!

When I was travelling through Mongolia, I really loved their music, their traditions especially in the former Russian controlled Mongolia. I love that country, their traditions, their music and their traditional life.

All they want to do is teach you accounting and philosophy and writing a proper paragraph and prokaryotes and eukaryotes and the circulatory system of fetal pigs and Martin Buber's I-thou relationship and gestalt psychotherapy and dyadic encounters and on-delay and off-delay relays and ladder logic and how to make a bead that looks like a stack of dimes and has good penetration. None of which is useful in learning the bagpipes or throat singing. It pains me to think of all the time and energy we spend on useless distractions to the neglect of such lofty and sublime pursuits as those.
Learn the overtone part first,it's not difficult though to reach this standard would be.

My Mom and Dad had a friend who could throat whistle...a woman friend. She could whistle whole songs too. MynDad said he'd heard of this before when he was young.They came from farm families, country folk, so they may have played music many different ways than organized instruments.its very fascinating to me. Thank you for your performances.

It all began when I saw a simple and small clip of a Mongolian throat singer and fell in love with it. From there I've been discovering that throat music might just be the best human Digeridoo music. It's so beautiful to me and idk why. There's just such an awesome sound to some of them and I love it with a passion now. It's almost like old fashion techno songs but made with human sounds

I am so hooked on Tuvan music! I strongly recommend you check out a Tuvan band called Huun Huur Tu. They make very traditional, amazing music like these guys

The feeling I get from listening to this song is a majestic toad traveling upstream a river.. And then toad jumps on a turtle to watch the coming sunrise.. Now with a new friend to share the beauty of the upcoming earth, the turtle supports the new one carrying its load and embraces seeing what each other sees in that new moment in time.

That was crazy beautiful! I never heard anything like this before, but while my husband drove us through the city, as soon as the concrete turned to trees...something broke and tears came pouring out. Connection with nature and ancients..then with modern beat bx? No idea, but I loved it.

Watching that last song makes me really miss Avi with Pentatonix, and gives good insight into how magical that coming together was with Kevin to create that special Pentatonix "sound."
