I know when you two think it's a good song/video when you forget that you're making a reaction video and just stare, slack-jawed, at your screen. This one, as with most all of this group's productions, is beautifully done, and their voices are so beautiful and amazing.
Big facts! They crushed this one!
This is the villain's song from Disney's animated Hunchback of Notre Dame. Which makes it even more disturbing - this song was in a Disney movie? And Geoff does such a great job as a villain - even though he apparently didn't want to do the part, he killed it!
Tony Wakim (former VP baritone, co-owner with Layne of Pattycake Productions where this was filmed) provided the body for the guard, but Eli provided the voice. Eli is an accomplished voice actor, and if you've heard This Is Halloween, you've gotten a sample of some of the voices he can produce.
I was going to mention the VP Alum in the house, but you beat me to it😂. Cool having Tony put in a (vocal) appearance. ❤
This is a cover of THE MOST EVIL Disney song, which was super evil to start, somehow made 10000000X times more evil!
Eli is such a vocal beast! That highest note was a F5 in a powerful head mix.
This is the point the villain shows his true colours. From the point layne said burn it his sanity goes out the window. It’s a dark song but shows the villain perfectly. And it’s done to perfection in this. Nice reaction. I love cold reacts. You can’t help but just stare and react to everything.
It is the story of a man tormented by the fact that he simultaneously desires and resents the beautiful Esmeralda.
They did such a good job expressing the dichotomy that is Frollo. When Geoff starts singing he almost (but not quite) appears vulnerable and then you see his descent into madness. In the beginning where the more choral parts are, the background segues into sounding like the church bells are ringing which makes him (Frollo, not Geoff!) even more vile.
Just after “burn it” Geoff looks at his hands as he’s singing “this fire in my skin” as if he is confused by his mania. That part that sounded like sputtering, I think is an allusion to the fire that’s being stoked. I think of Layne’s percussion as being organic.
It is hard not to be caught up with the lead vocals, but there is so much going on in the background. Besides the Latin and Greek religious phrases, Geoff does these amazing little bubbling arpeggios when J is singing. When he is interrogating the guard you can hear in the BGV’s someone singing “gyp-sy es-caped”. (I’ve listened to the karaoke track a lot to catch just those little pieces!!)
Layne, Mr. Percussion, did this arrangement, that might be why you’re having trouble figuring out the time signatures!🤣
I can't wait until you guys do Jack's Lament by Geoff Castellucci. It is absolutely beautiful.
I second that emotion!
This is mesmerizing; I watched it over and over again, and then some more.
Also with Cesar, he did an instrumental run while playing the air guitar. He did instrumental sounds in In the Air Tonight but without the physicality.
Great reaction, guys!!
I'm not a Disney fan but I've read that this is a cover from Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame". The vocals are amazing - very theatrical and dramatic! "Crabs going through yogurt" - hahahahaa! Thanks for playing this & your comments.
This is from Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. :) Disney's most evil character ever. The subtitles help with the latin words. Geoff once said he'd never do this song, he found the character too unpleasant, but I guess Layne insisted, having done the arrangement. He's like that. yes they needed a guard and Tony happened to be there doing background work and got roped in.
The greatest thing about Tony getting unexpectedly roped into making a cameo appearance in this video is that when they asked him to do it, not only did he immediately get on board with what they were wanting him to do, but he didn’t need any rehearsal or script, *he already knew what lines they needed him to say*
Just like that. He knows Disney movies so well that at the drop of a hat he can just pluck the lines from memory. Like everyone who’s ever been a part of VoicePlay, he’s insanely talented.
I suspect that Geoff got a little chuckle calling Tony an idiot🤣🤣.
@@zarasha8220 I was absolutely astounded when Tony just knew the dialogue off the top of his head. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but it always amazes me how much they know about the entire Disney realm.
@@zarasha8220 Y'all realize that was Eli's voice in the song speaking as the guard, right? Tony was in the hooded cloak but we don't actually hear Tony in the video.
I'm still hoping they'll do a song with Tony, J. None, and Cesar -- that would make four generations of VP baritones singing in one song, because Layne was their baritone until Scott Porter left the group to be an actor full time.
@@shirleykarr560 yes I’m aware it was Eli’s voice we heard, but Tony still needed to say the lines while the video was being filmed so Geoff’s performance felt more natural, that he was really in that scene of the movie
Dead…I’m dead. 💀 🤣 You guys are the best. Your faces…😂
😂🤣😂
I think VP broke you?!? LOL 😂 Nice reaction guys. You made me laugh and smile. Cannot wait for their next song. 🎵
They do it frequently 😂 appreciate the feedback! ✌🏼
With Layne, Tony, J. None, and Cesar this video features 4 eras of Voiceplay Baritones. Tony decided he preferred life behind the camera, but got roped into this last minuet. The voice is Eli though.
Can’t wait for you to do Geoff’s rendition of Jacks Lament
Tony was one of the early members of VoicePlay (see him in Phantom). He's a co-owner is Paddycake Studios.
I think you missed Cesar's electric guitar riff... you should go back and listen. It is great. They all did so good.. just keep getting better and better.
The Latin parts of the background vocals are from a very old prayer called the Confiteor ("I Confess") which is supposed to be all about accepting responsibility for one's own weaknesses and sin. ('Mea maxima culpa'='by my own most grievous fault.') They're mocking and rebuking Frollo's protests that it's anyone's fault but his own. If Eli gets much better, he'll ascend to a higher plane of existence!
It's from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's a villain song
As always Great Reaction guys!! This cover was epic! I hope you are going to be doing Geoff's new cover for Halloween "Jack's Lament" from Nightmare before Christmas. Look forward to all your reactions!
The creaking door in the background was a nice touch, very seasonal!
You guys are the first reactors I've seen that mentioned the timing! That shit messed me up pretty bad at first too, lol. There's definitely a double downbeat on the extra count and my poor brain just could not compute! 😂 I feel better about it now after seeing this reaction. ❤
I saw a meme the other day that said “all music is in 4/4 if you don’t count like a nerd.” And I felt a little attacked 😂
@@307Reacts Now I have to look for that meme... thanks a lot. lmao
If y’all haven’t seen Hunchback, go watch it - it’s peak Disney, surprisingly, almost shockingly dark, but with great comic relief too. It holds up!
4 generations of VoicePlay Baritones in one song. Layne, Tony, J and Cesar! Now, if only Tony had sang... 🥰
VoicePlay are so very awesome! Love this song so much. Love your reactions!
We love your comments, Anita, thank you! 🙏🏼
As to your question of time signature: the opening swaps back and forth from 4/4 and 6/4
Watching you guys react to VoicePlay and Geoffs solo stuff always has me grinning from ear to ear. I love that you're hilarious but also knowledgeable and truly appreciate how amazing these guys are.
Oh,no. This is one of the best villain songs. Context is massively helpful.
Back when they were on the Sing-Off, Tony Wakim was their baritone. He toured with them for awhile, but never really liked touring. So he left and J None took over. But he didn’t go far. He and Layne became partners in Pattycake Productions. Since he is often at VoicePlay’s shoots, he has been in other videos (uncredited. ) He is credited sometimes with helping with the direction and set.
Came here for the reaction but got something even better...the Idaho shirt. I was born and raised in that great state. Much love. Keep doing what ya'll do.
Ey, I’ve got a bunch of family up in the little mountain town of Salmon! Beautiful country up there, one of my favorite places to visit! Much love, thanks for hanging out!
Ritardando, my friends. The time signature was wonky because they push and pull a lot on the tempo, so it's really hard to tell, plus they like to stretch certain measures out by slowing down towards the end. :) That said... I THINK it was actually in 4/4 but hell if I know for sure.
It's from the Disney movie "Hunchback Of Notre Dame". Geoff is Claude Frollo, one of Disney's worst villains.
Cesar is the one on the far right :) it was really cool to hear how you guys heard it, because I didn’t even think about the time signature when I was listening - you definitely being a different perspective. Loved it!
You should check out Jack's Lament that Geoff put out a few days after that one released!
the song starts on a pickup - on beat 4, with 1 right after. It's in 4 throughout, though the tempo changes pretty drastically at points
The different timings flow so naturally and seemless, that I wouldn't have recognized it, if you didn't point it out. Great reaction! Just subscribed ;-)
I think in an interview Geoff said that Eli recently got his throat checked and has a clean bill of health. So glad he can make it look easy and continue to sing in a healthy way. Keep those wicked highs coming! ❤🔥
Good to hear!
I much prefer Eli to mitch. I love the back and forth between Eli and Geoff. The extreme ranges was so interesting. Tony was the guard but the voice was Eli
This is the villain song for Minister Frollo in hunchback of Notre Dame if u listen to the words it’s a horrible meaning but it’s one off of not the best and darkest villain song in Disney history because of that it took J none years to convince Geoff to do it great reaction. Guys I love watching y’all!
Church official lusts for gypsy Esmeralda who rejects him so he condemns her to burn at the stake as a witch. Originally from 1831 classic novel; now we'd call it abuser blame-shifting. Beautifully performed, though. Why isn't Geoff doing character vocals for movies and TV??
Minister Frollo (the villain character whose song this is) is a church official who feels lust (apparently for the first time in his life) and, like most rapists, blames the victim. I’ve seen comments from patrons that Geoff really hated playing this character but really, who else was going to hit those notes?
I know this comes from a Disney cartoon but MAN, I’m still astounded that they allowed it in the movie, because it’s hands down the darkest piece of music I’ve ever heard in a Disney production. I’ll bet there were some vituperative arguments before it was released.
Great reaction!! Cesar also did an "air guitar' vocal percussion and Jay None is doing some bass while Geoff has lead vocals! They support each other and learn from each other! No ego competition! Love that about VP! MORE!!!
Cesar De LaRosa.
Yall kill me!! Great reaction fellas. Stay Blessed!
When I first saw the Hellfire video, When they got to BURN IT, I just went "Oh Yeah, Adrenaline punch"
It's a cover of a song from Disneys' The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Geoff is channeling Minister Claude Frollo. Tony Wakim past member Camio and Eli did the voiceover.
Great reaction! Gotta tell ya that Home Free came out with 3 new videos. 1 is a live recorded version of Sea Shanty Medley. The next
is oh pretty woman. The third is Life Is A Highway.
Thanks for your reaction
This song is my favorite from hunchback of notre dame
For me they upgrate the song
Please react to Geoff castellucci too
Please
Layne threw in a false downbeat towards the end. It took me a few listens to understand what was going on. XD
there are no superlatives great enough to describe Voiceplay! ❤🏴
From Hunchback of Notre Dame
Not to throw you back in time, but to get a greater appreciation of Eli, you should check out their Moana medley and see/hear him filling in BASS while Geoff is a decapod. IIRC, he hits a B1.
If you guys enjoyed this you should watch the original from the film. It’s bloody brilliant
The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Disney has the most challenging music to sing along to. Most Disney music is rather catchy -- not so for Hunchback. But it's beautiful and very well written. But very "Broadway" in that regard...very technical.
Well said, totally agree!
Caesar
At 7:18 of your video did you hear Ceasars guitar Rift. I had to go back a few times to hear it but its in there real quick.
You should check out "Bridge over troubled water" by Voiceplay.
It’s on the list!
You guys should listen to the original before you watch Voiceplay videos.... You'll appreciate how good they are
Noticed the shirt. Hi from Nampa Idaho
Hello from Wyoming! And hello from my Idaho family in Salmon! ✌🏼
❤❤😊😊
Make sure you check out Geoff's new video too! IMO it's somehow better than this! And this is a solid 9.8 out of voiceplay for me.
👍🎶
I know a little older but I hope you do some the Disney stuff also Some their ACA Top 10 things too.
Great video! Wanted to know what kinda kit you guys have in the background. I have like a basic starter one and am tryna find a good one to upgrade to.
The e-drum kit? If that’s what you’re asking about, I believe it’s an Alesis Nitro mesh kit. I bought it like, 3 years ago, and it still holds up with the original equipment. Highly recommend!
Yall need to react to Bass Gang, theyre an up-coming A Capella group. They just started releasing their third like album thing. Check out Arabian Nights by The Bass Gang. Super impressive.
We’ve got a few on our channel already, but we definitely need more, they’re awesome!
please listen to Dan Vasc!! To start, I suggest his cover of “Bring me to life.” He also has a cover together with Violet Orlandi - "Kiss from a rose".
I think you'll like it!
To theatrical for me
Even in the movie it’s an incredibly theatrical piece. And that’s a cartoon.
There are many covers of this. Almost all pale compared to this.
As is typically the case when VP decides to cover anything, right? 🤷🏻😁
