I still prefer both John Cale's and Rufus Wainwright's versions over this one. This one is very good, but the level and amount of praise it receives is way overblown. If Jeff didn't die tragically so young, I wonder if it still would've gotten the attention. Btw, Lucie.....This version was apparently edited together from several recordings.
This was a big hit in its day (1990s) and is very close to several versions by the author, Leonard Cohen. It is also template to Lucy Thomas' version, which remains the most impressive to me today. Jeff died young, adding a bittersweet note to any evaluation of his version.
When/where was it a hit in the 90s? It wasn't released as a single until 2007, at which point it was a hit on several European charts. Jeff based his version on John Cale's 1991 recording, having never heard Cohen's original. Cohen, subsequently performed the song similar to Cale's version as well.
Jeff Buckley does a great cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. I also recommend you to check out John Cale's version of this song.
Lover, You Should’ve Come Over’ by him.
You definitely should react to this song.
