I’m in honors English but I never learned to annotate. I would just highlight randomly and call it good so I’m here now to learn properly

    11 Annotating Techniques:
    1. Circle unknown words and look up the definitions.
    2. Put question marks next to areas of uncertainty or parts that are unclear.
    3. Put a star next to any text that you think is important.
    4. Put an exclamation point next to key turning points or something you want to come back to.
    5. Circle or mark any character names the first time they are introduced.
    6. Keep a running list of characters and their traits. Add to this list as you learn more about the characters.
    7. Write your notes somewhere accessible: a) in book; b) on sticky notes; c) in separate notebook.
    8. Paraphrase each chapter right after you read it. Write only a few sentences.
    9. Write down questions as they arise. No question is too small!
    10. Color code your notes. Use different colors for definitions, questions, thoughts, etc.
    11. Give each chapter a title, even if it already has one. Title = Main idea

I am 53 and decided to return to school for my degree. I do not remember a lot of what I read and this helps me stay focused and remember. It slows me down. The trouble I have is understanding my notes. English was not a good subject for me and spelling/writing/grammar/pronunciation I am TERRIBLE at. I know practice makes it better so I have a ways to go. Thank you for your video and I will be putting the advice to good use.

Your students are very lucky to have such a fun teacher! I've been doing this for years, but didn't know I was "annotating"! I really like your reminder that "your notes/annotations are your thoughts, your own interpretation" of the text! I'm a very slow processor when I read and I don't think deeply. So taking notes really helps me to, as you said, process what I'm reading. I appreciate the time you took to make and share this short video! Thank You!

    Here are the 11 tips
    1. look up unknown words
    2. Put question marks next to paragraphs where you are uncertain or if the situation is unclear
    3. Put a star next to something that is important
    4. Put exclamation point !!! when something surprising happens
    5. Circle the names of characters when they show up the first time
    6. Keep a list of character names and relationships
    7. Keep your notes in a separate location or in the back of the book or on sticky notes
    8. In your own words, write a summary ofeach chapter. What happened? What might happen next?
    9. When you get a question, write it down All questions are useful.
    10. Use different colors for definitinos, thoughts, questions
    11. GIve each chapter a title and tell the MAIN IDEA of that chapter.
    Caution
    Don’t make notes about everything
    Start slowly
Don’t mark the whole text. Allow something to stand out

I realized that some of the tips is my method exactly! That's cool! But I also learned some new tips and too! This is really helpful, especially for literature and some of my other classes. Actually we annotate for just about every class so this very much helps! :D

I found your video a year or two ago and share it in my online and in-person developmental English classes as a great overview of annotation. However, this quarter I need to find captioned videos for a student with hearing loss, and the captions don't match up well with your video since they are auto-generated by TH-cam. Do you self-caption any of your videos? I'd love a version of this video with accurate captions so your video was accessible to all my students.

    • @SchoolHabits
      @SchoolHabits  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh my goodness, thank you for suggesting that I do that! I will most certainly look into doing captions so that the video is accessible to all. I appreciate your feedback, and I am so happy to hear that you and your students find the video is helpful.

Here, your welcome (thank me by subbing to me):
