me right now. tomorrow is my last day so school starts Thursday and I haven't read either of my 2 books, watched the one Ted talk I am supposed to watch and take notes on and the NEW YORK TIMES article I have to read and take notes on as well. Also haven't finished my math assignment as well
i hate when teachers ask for annotations. i feel pain writing on pages of a book and stopping in the middle of reading and annotating takes my focus off the book and makes it less interesting and honestly i feel like i don’t absorb any more than i would if i didn’t annotate maybe even less.
Depending on how much time and dedication you have, you could just read a whole section/chapter of a book, go back, and then annotate and move forward. That's what I've done before, haha.
Same, I hate annotating, like it doesn't bother me to write a summary at the end of each chapter but it boths me when I have to stop reading and write down some notes every 10 seconds. I know that annotating can be helpful but when there's a lotta details in one page it just keeps me from concentrating on actually reading the book. Like every line has a meaning so I'm like forced to write a note for every line cuz the teacher said we need annotations and then soon all I remember is what I wrote as a annotation and not the actual line in the book itself.
I am an English teacher in Knoxville, TN and I love this!! Thank you for putting this information together concisely and with a wonderful testimonial. I think the kiddos hearing it from the voice of a student is helpful because you automatically establish ethos. :)
you can instead use a pencil and draw a box or a cloud (be creative) around the words you would normally highlight and then when you have to give the book back you just erase everything. :)
post it notes work well for books you can't write in. if you leave the tip of the note peeking out, it would save all the page flags too. You could try the page marker flags that are a bit wider than the flags she used if the squares are too big.
I have the same issue. I'm still going to make a similar color code, but it will be for the page flags and then I'll have a post it note inside with what I want to write. If it's a smaller idea I'll use some little page flags to point to it
this video was so helpful! i'm in ap literature this year too and it's been hard learning how to annotate and read closely, but this video helped a ton!! thank you sm, and congrats on 100K!!
Love this!!!! Showing it to my freshmen and sophomores who have not learned annotation thus far in their academic careers. Also, English teacher to student, amazing work! Thinking of highlighting in different colors now too!

It seems that every time you upload it's just what I need!! We are starting a novel study today that is going to have a lot of annotating and I couldn't get the hang of a way to do it when we started two years ago.
Me-*writes in book* Teacher- stop writing in your book! Me-THIS IS UR FUALT U SAID TO ANNOTATE AND THAT MEANS NAKING and writing comments in the book Teacher-WOW! I taught u something Me- u didn’t the video did
Recently while reading "Guns, Germs, and Steel" I realized that although I was reading it for fun I had a hard time concentrating for long periods of time. I couldn't get through more than 2-3 pages at a time and would easily forget what I read. Annotating has definitely helped me pull through and engage more with the text, even just underlining sentences that stick out to me!
I want to do this! I don't have the heart to put marks on my Quran. I am thinking of annotating my digital Quran with different colours to mark different things. I can look for Allah's names and in which context they appear, similes and also phrases. Thanks for a very useful video.
Sanjida Shaheed Electronic versions of books are fab - you can write all over them without causing any damage! Adobe PDFs also gave a nice range of annotation tools - not that you'd want to photocopy a holy book, but it's handy for journal articles.
You can use a note journal. I do this for my bible. I have a journal I keep with it and take notes or annotate the chapters. Then you can just have a page for each chapter. I don't know much about the Quran but in the Bible, we have different books and within each book are "chapters." So for each page, I try to be specific like "Genesis 1-8" etc. or also different colored sticky notes. Like pink for main points, yellow for the lesson you got out of it, blue for Allah's name, etc.
Your annotations look so amazing :O Thanks for making this video I really needed a motivation boost for my ap class ^_^ Hope senior year is going well for you!
This helped so much, thank you I never know how to start annotating a book and this just made it all seem like it would be fun and organized. I thought it would be tiring and messy
I see some people here who are afraid of writing and making annotions in books. I used to be like that too, but since I became a literature student I had to get rid of that mindset. Let me tell ya guys books are not dirty or damaged if you write in them! In my opinion, it actually adds more charm when you open a book that you studied and find all the additional notes you wrote in the margins. I like to think of it as a reminder of how hard I worked to understand what‘s written between the lines. Also, when I see the notes I don‘t forget of the different interpretations of certain extracts which makes it easier to study for tests and exams. Some tips to get used to it: 1. start small by using a pencil (it‘s my go-to since I find it more aesthetically pleasing than the blue ink of a pen) + you can erase it later 2. you can start by just underlining or circling something and then use a separate sheet or sticky note to write annotions related to that part 3. as you get used to marking things in books you can then start writing in the margins. Start with some word abbreviations or symbols You‘ll soon find yourself comfortable writing your notes in books A book does not lose its value if you write in it, you actually make it more valuable by personalising it with your thoughts and knowledge. No one will be able to take that book and make it theirs. It‘s yours, with your hard work in it.
The Kite Runner is such an incredible, inpiaring and sad book! I read it last year and I couldn't stop crying at the end! (sorry for my english, I'm french) Great video btw :)
Omg, I'm reading Wide Sargasso Sea at this very moment (literally just took a break from it to watch this video and get some ideas on ways to annotate it!) So cool to see it pop up for you too :)
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH. Very helpful as always! Can you please make a video on how to participate more during class discussions (not necessarily just for English but other classes too)? Especially if you're shy, quiet, and introverted?
This is an older video but I’m a second year college student and I just wanted to say thank you, this video helped me in 11&12th grade with AP Lang/Lit, and got some college credits because I passed both exams. I still use this in college, best system yet!
Our teacher sent this to our entire class of incoming freshman since we have to annotate during summer reading! This gave me really helpful ideas so thank you!
-transferred to new school -honor English class turns out to have summer hw -got my schedule and classes and accepted into school 2 weeks before term -has had spent final 2 weeks of summer to figure out where the books can be bought and read them -apparently I had to annotate -this video is a life saver 10/10
About to start AP English Language and Composition and she has assigned us to annotate Thank You for Arguing for our summer work. This video will definitely help
In my opinion, annotating actually distracts me from the story. It makes me feel like I’m only reading to annotate or complete an assignment instead of reading to understand the characters and themes.
hi can you please make a money management journal or planner? i've been wanting one so i can keep up with my money easily but cant make a simple format on it.
ok i'm in ap lit right now and i've read the secret history 3 times for pleasure so i spent this entire video with my jaw on the FLOOR. I AM SO JEALOUS YOU ACTUALLY GOT IT ASSIGNED IN CLASS
Sareena!!!! I just got my muji order and I'm in LOVE! I bought my items based on the study community and they are perfect! I just wanted to say thank you for making videos and blog posts that are super helpful. and if anybody is wondering if the pens are worth it, they are ❤️❤️❤️
I was always told by teachers, "Do not write in your books! Don't ear mark your books! Treat them with respect!" That constant refrain has stuck with 20 years later, so when I see my children annotating, it makes me shudder 😮
I usually don't highlight books (especially when they are so hard to find and buy in my country), but I do use a lot of sticky notes on textbooks (only in the copies, originals are kept safe), where I annotate key words, a summary of the page and questions I may have.
That was a good book plot wise, but I did get frustrated when my teacher assigned some chapters to read as homework because I just could not grasp how dense the writing was.
I can't annotate as nicely because we are provided with a copy of the book, and we're not supposed to write in the book. I'm not sure what to do... maybe get some page flags?
Thank you for making this video! I am just entering high school and I know that my English teachers will expect me to annotate, but I am always completely lost on how to do it since no one has explicitly taught me how, they have just expected me to do it. I usually make marks on what is important, what is surprising/shocking, connections (still a little confused but working on it), things I like/find amusing, questions. unknown words, and just some of my thoughts while reading. Despite this, I always feel like I am doing it completely wrong. I feel like I literally have to analyze everything, which is confusing and stresses me out honestly. Finding all of the symbolism and literary devices is also really challenging to me. Does anyone have any input or advice on this? -A confused annotator
For my class, I'm reading The Metamorphosis and I have read a Doll's House over the summer. Doll's House was really fun to annotate! Metamorphosis is hard to analyze. I wish I found your highlighting systern when I was reading it, because all I did was just highlight random important details😅
I'd like to annotate but it seems like it'll double up the time I will normally take to read the book? I'm not sure it would be very efficient to do that especially if you study heavy novels. Elspeth Nicholson One option is to give yourself a sheet of writing paper per book page and make your notes in that, referencing them by page number and paragraph number. You can bookmark with thin strips of paper (try colour coding for chapters etc) and still use different colours to for different things you pick out of the text. It's a bit slower, but it does save your books, and thin strips of paper make less of a mess of the spine than proper bookmarks 👍
Hello, studyign! I was just wondering, what color code did you use to annotate The Metamorphosis? Do you use the same color code consistently when annotating novels? What color code do you use when annotating nonfiction texts? Thanks! :)
You probably forgot about this comment, but anyways I would think she would use the same color code on anything she has to annotate and the actual text doesn't change her color code. It all depends on how your teacher wants you to annotate.
But like I'm deathly afraid of writing IN books
+Manar Haroon use sicky notes!!
Manar Haroon I had the same fear but once I tried I fell in love with it

Hello, studyign! I was just wondering, what color code did you use to annotate The Metamorphosis? Do you use the same color code consistently when annotating novels?
What color code do you use when annotating nonfiction texts?
Thanks! :)
You probably forgot about this comment, but anyways I would think she would use the same color code on anything she has to annotate and the actual text doesn't change her color code. It all depends on how your teacher wants you to annotate.
Wow, you really don't miss a single word of a book, do you?
We're reading "The Kite Runner" in our Honors' English 2 class :).
