Honestly the worst thing about burn-in to me is constantly worrying about burn-in. I don't want to feel worried while I'm trying to enjoy a video game - defeats the purpose.

I purchased a C7 OLED back in 2017 and to this day I am scared to death of it to the point where I havn't played certain games (Persona 5) on it do to risk of burn it or I obsessively turn off HUD elements to mitigate risk. I do have a bit of burn in on the lower right corner of the screen which I believe is from Kingdom Hearts but it isn't viewable in most instances. I plan on buying a new TV for the next gen hardware but it is tough because while OLED is beautiful tech the beauty isn't worth the anxiety.

100% agree. The worry might be worse than the issue itself. The second you change any habits... you've been affected by burn-in whether the TV has it or not.

I am a hardcore gamer and I have an OLED.
You shouldn't base your decisions on anecdotal facts but this is my experience:
I have been using a 65" LG B6 since March 2017. I play games for many hours a day (I clocked over 2.500 hours on dark souls in a year and a half). I play the same game everyday for months.
I have had no burn-in issues with gaming content (even though the B6 is "older tech"), except for ONE. After playing God of War with HDR for three months straight everyday for at least 8-10 hours (there were 3 people playing and we went into NG+++), I did a panel test and found that Kratos' red static "Rage" bar on the bottom left of the screen appeared to have burned-in when viewing a solid red test screen. It looked like a very faint grey shadow. This was not noticable when viewing normal content, since it could be seen only if the screen was red or orange. When the screen was any other color (blue, green, etc) it was not visible at all.
Several months later I did another test, and the "rage" bar Shadow has almost disappeared. It is still visible, but only barely. You really have to look for it, and only on a solid test screen of red or orange color. On other colors it is simply not there at all.
So, even with an older OLED panel, hardcore gaming didn't seem to cause serious issues for me.
HOWEVER I do have a small burn-in mark from another source: the TV's TH-cam App has a yellow icon on the bottom right of the screen constantly when doing anything but viewing a video. This yellow icon has burned-in and can be seen on red and yellow test screens. Granted, it is very small, and since I watch TH-cam everyday, I don't know if the burn-in mark would disappear if I stopped using the TH-cam App. Also it is not noticable when viewing normal content.
So, summing up, my experience regarding burn-in is mostly positive. It seems that certain colors (yellow, red, orange) are more susceptible to burning-in, and indeed there might be a problem if you have a static image playing everyday for hours on end for months and months. But unless you plan on playing only one game everyday "forever", I wouldn't worry about burn-in. Especially on the newer OLED panels.

E Rice I’m in the same boat. I play the same games over and over for 4/10 hours a day since I’m disabled on a 2.5 year old lg c8 and don’t have any hud or minimap burn in. I play sniper elite more than anything which is heavy hud and minimap in both corners. I don’t baby the tv and don’t have to do anything special to it. If I tried the tv off it runs pixel refresh on its own. If I pause a game or tv show the tv goes into screen saver mode after about 10 minutes and if I sleep with the tv on the music channel the tv lowers the luminance of the channels logo. No worries

    • @whybenorman
      @whybenorman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@E_Rice Hi, if you vary your content in-between gaming you should be fine. Also, I don't know if the TH-cam app on the new OS has the same yellow icon (I hope not). And finally I think the newer OLED panels/software are much better at dealing with burn-in. What I failed to mention in my original comment is that even on the B6 OLED, the picture quality is stellar! So unless you are a very extreme case where you play ONLY Destiny 2 and watch absolutely nothing else, I would suggest you go with the OLED. 😉

I've been gaming on a 4k HDR 65" OLED since late 2016/early 2017. Haven't had any issues to date, having owned a Plasma in the past just made sure I'd exit to menu w PS button periodically and whenever walking away for 5-10+ minutes I'd usually put it to sleep.
I think the increase in picture quality is worth the minor inconvenience, plus they have that feature where it'll clear/clean the panel when shutting it off for the night.

Led is making its mark, my Hisense H9G ,i''ll put up against any Oled. Oled hasn't changed in the last 4 years and LED is going to watch them in the rear view mirror real soon.Any company just getting into the oled game is just doing it for a money grab , no other reason. They know Oled will be dead in the next few years.

    • @TJ.85
      @TJ.85 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@thomasvinelli what do you think led means exactly in connection with these game changing tvs?
Because I hope you realize they everything out there besides oled is just the same old 25+ year old LCD (that's liquid crystal display and what's been used for decades for non crt based displays) and no amount of trying to gussy the naming scheme up to sound more like and confuse people with it vs oled (led qled miniled etc) its all just more of the same lcd weve had since the beginning of time (roughly).
OLED hasn't changed in 4 years? SON that's cause it's hard to top perfection (but they keep working at it) and why I'm now 2 generations in on oled in 3 years time.
LCD has to keep going through new identity crisis because they can't find anyway to take the top so they keep trying to "adapt" and copy that oled magic but it ain't happening.
They can get close with something like that Sony studio reference ($40,000) dual layer lcd but even then it needs 2 freaking tv panels in it to do so.
The only way lcd keeps up with oled is combing a bunch of these technolgies into 1.
A dual layer lcd with massive full array local dimming using based on thousands if not 10s of thousands of mini led zones along with that additional, but necessary to come close to picture quality of oled, quantum dot panel.
With all that in 1 TV (and by someone that knows what they're doing like Sony did with that studio reference one) I might consider them over OLED that's if they didn't do stupid things like no hdmi 2.1 or if they include its just 1 port or a limited version (all crap).
The fact is there isn't a display like this and if it did exist it would cost way too much to make or beyond what anyone would be willing to spend.
It's why it took a $40,000 son stiro reference screen to show that a lcd (when using all the tricks in the book) can look as good if not better than oled.

LG also forces the TV to do this after 700 hours of use and theres also things like pixel shift and auto Logo luminance adjustments that the TV can read and implement depending on the input source. I’m glad to hear someone that shares my same sentiment with OLED. Excellent picture quality but LG and their gaming advertisement then saying burn in isn’t from normal use is just trash. That’s like Ferrari saying we won’t cover your warranty unless you keep it under 65 for the life of the car, meanwhile advertising how fast it is and it’s road holding at high speeds. I’ve bought even the CX and ended up returning it because it just rings in the back of my head, this is a $1,500 TV that may get burn in for what is “normal use” for me. If LG said this is not for frequent gamers or not for people that watch news often, that would be one thing. Otherwise I see it as blatant deceptive marketing and not only that but using a completely subjective term “normal user” when it is normal these days for folks to game significantly more on top of being in the house all day from the pandemic. I think LG makes good stuff but, it’s not worth the expense to be that pissed off consumer because you don’t meet their definition of “normal” despite a nice big GSYNC READY sticker on the side of the box.

I had an OLED B7 from May 2018 until April 2020. I gamed 90% on it. Sold it without any burn in let alone image retention (I think I had about 2.5k hours on it). I gamed on a plasma from 2009 until 2018 (Samsung plasma and then Panasonic ST50). Had minor temporary image retention but it would go away. Now I have two C9’s and no issues so far (bought them April 2020). I turn my brightness down on the OLEDs because I find it to be too bright so I slap on eco low or medium. I’m sure that probably helped
Edit: redditors have been successful saying they have had their panel swapped even 2 or 3 years after their 1 year warranty has expired. Ymmv I’m sure. For me, I have the 5 year warranty from Best Buy for my C9s.

ATI Radeon right, but some folks have shown “burn in” as early as 2000 hours (see techgiants CX video with approx 2000 hours). Depends on use. I have experience with plasma TVs so I know how to avoid burn in, let alone image retention. So far, the oleds I have/had, didn’t even experience image retention. Might have to do with me turning on eco mode from time to time. Might be because modern games have varied content. For example; I spent over 40 hours playing bloodstained on the ps4. Over 70 hours ff7 remake. No image retention or burn on on the b7; which doesn’t have the more burn in precautions the C9 has. Of course like you said could be the hours, or could be a mixture of content/reduced brightness. Point is, I’m not going to worry about burn in but if it was a concern for a potential buyer, I’d recommend getting the Best Buy warranty, or try your hand without one and attempt the free LGs panel swap (some have shown success this year replacing their 6 or 7 series with a new panel) or go for an lcd.

Gran Turismo, Fifa, COD, Battlefield etc. The TV is still running and have no burn in. Now I plan to get an LG CX OLED. If it runs 5 years without burn in I am happy. But of course I play 2-3 hours a day at max.

      Hi,
      Quick question about the panel.
I noticed micro dots (white) on the panel. It's flawless, but I don't know how to explain it.
If you want to do the test, take a soft cloth or a microfiber, and with the flash of your phone, come close by looking about ten centimeters away from your panel (TV off) and tell me if you see these dots. It looks like an imperfection, I'd just like to see if other people see it.
the dots are the size of the head of a pin, it is necessary to observe well
There's no bump then, is there under the screen?
It's not an impact, and it doesn't go away when you rub it with a microfiber.
It looks like a cotton deposit but I can't define it.
      It's all over the
      Panel.
      The television is brand new.
Thank you for doing the test, I would just like to be reassured that this is inherent in glass panels.

Concerning avoiding burn-in as a power user, it's actually rather straightforward, as I see it. It's not so much about using dark mode in apps, although that does help. But having pixels turned off, doesn't save them from showing static content. As mentioned, showing various content does, as it 'massages' the pixels, preventing them from getting stuck showing one thing. So all you have to do, is to leverage the large amounts of idle time, there usually is on a PC for a power-user. If you're anything like me, your PC will be idling for hours, while you're doing different things. In that time, you can easily have the TV/monitor show varied content, thus reducing the chance of burn-in, as the pixels showing static menus, will now also get to show other things to a great degree.
The easiest way to do this, is to get a large quantity of desktop backgrounds, which Windows can then cycle between every few minutes. A more advanced solution is to use something like Wallpaper Engine and have it show an ever-changing background, making sure your TV/monitor has it's pixels properly massaged. I'd use something like 'Moving Floor', 'Moving Boxes', 'Moving Droplets', 'Gradient Moving Background', 'Moving Backgrounds Crystal Cave', 'Colorful Rainbow Gradient', or any other background which will constantly shift the colors shown by every pixel on the screen. Then you just leave your desktop on when you idle, go do stuff, and let the background do the work of making sure your OLED won't suffer from burn-ins.

    • @zoopa9988
      @zoopa9988 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The problem with that is that you still keep the tv on for no reason so it will still die relatively fast compared to just shutting the tv off or going with a Samsung display and since it would be extremely annoying in my opinion to turn off the tv every time your not explicitly using it which is why I went with a Samsung Q95T I did recommend my father to go for Oled though since he doesn't game and only watches movies and or television for 2 to 4 hours a day which is fine but since I GAME 4 up to 12 hours a day, yeah well I would just destroy it in no joke 2 to 4 years.
Unless I would go full eco mode on it or something stupid like that and put the brightness from 700 nits down to 400 or 350.
Good thing that both options are available though so everyone can get what they want.

Thanks for making this video. It’s extremely informative and talks to the buyer base that most reviewers have avoided. I have an LG B9 and I put hundreds of hours a week gaming. One example was over 20 hours on AC: Odessey (it was just too gorgeous to put down and I had the time). As for FIFA you can turn off all HUD elements during gameplay. Another recommendation for players is to have “logo luminance adjustment” on high. You can find this option in the TVs menu. Finally, always check the games menu for HUD brightness adjustment. For example Destiny 2 with HDR on is gorgeous, but the HUD brightness goes up exponentially. Luckily Bungie has an option in the video settings to lower the HUD brightness. The caveat is that not all games with HDR have this option. At the end of the day do your research and assess what your acceptable level of risk is. I’m perfectly fine with grinding FIFA on the weekends with the options I’ve described above enabled.

The issue with Oleds is the nature of the technology itself. Case closed. LG or anybody that makes Oleds knows this. All they care about is profits. Any company that makes Oleds know it's a money grab because they know people buy into the BS these companies put out. I just received my LG CX earlier this week. I went with that, for I wanted to up my viewing experience with shows and console gaming. I was previously using a Sony LCD. And G-DAMN does it look so much better with HDR content; shows and gaming. Really amazing. I seem to do more gaming on average with my PC, and it's ASUS LCD IPS monitor. But there are some games exclusive to the PS that I wanted to enjoy. The Last of US 2, and now Ghosts of Tsushima are prime examples. I use to spend a lot of time playing Overwatch daily on my previous Sony LCD TV. But now I hardly play that on the PS4. But still, spend some time daily on the PC. My wife also enjoys gaming on the PS4 with games like Mortal Kombat and Stardrew Valley. So we'll need to keep an eye out for persistent images, and seeing if there are ways to change the HUD to make them less persistent.
I got it from Best Buy and went with the extended warranty. That was an added 20% cost to the TV. It was mainly for peace of mind if something went wrong with the TV, then they would come out and fix it or replace it. Also with Covid it's a lot harder to get a buddy and their van/pickup to help me make the trip. It also made me feel a bit easier regarding the possibility of burn-in.
Thanks for this video. It has some good practical info to consider if burn in is a potential issue for the user or not. Now I feel a bit more relaxed about things for 2 reasons; 1 I'm not currently a HC gamer on my PS4, and I have the BB extended Warranty.

Sounds like next gen games should be thinking of designing UI to allow users to tweak the transparency and contrast of on-screen items. As a PC user especially in MMO's this has been a thing for years, but it was mainly just used as a way to reduce on-screen distractions. One thing I noticed from the horrible Halo Infinite trailer is that the on-screen UI was fairly dull and transparent and that would probably combat burn-in quite well. Maybe if enough people make noise about the situation, developers might listen.

I think the lack of warranty is due to abuse concerns. Someone wants a replacement, they leave it on a static image near the end of the warranty, and file a claim. I think with the increasing red sub pixel and all the other tech such as logo luminescence and pixel shift, it is far more unlikely to happen than in years past. The LG's have definitely changed since the sets Rtings started testing. I think this is why LG lowkey does panel replacements out of warranty, that way they can always say no but can keep customers happy that do call. I purchased a C9 last year, and opted to get a better deal online than buy from BB for the Geek Squad Warranty. I paid about $1200 with tax for a 55" C9, at the time the same purchase would of run me $200-$300 more at BB, plus the cost of Warranty at over $300, I figured I will just enjoy my set, I think it is HIGHLY unlikely to get burn in sooner than 2 years even with frequent gaming, and in that time the $600 plus I saved can be set aside for whenever I am ready to buy the next set. When the cost of the warranty is 25% plus of the TV, IMO if you are financially responsible, you are way better off just saving the cash.

  • @danielexinvil

And just a little tidbit on geek squad coverage, they only replace the tv after manufacturers warranty meaning you would have to wait the year out if you got burn in with the first year. This is the one case wear the geek squad protection is beneficial because for example if your particular model isnt in stock anymore they would replace the television with the most recent model which is a bitter sweet plus because it means you got burn in but you get a brand new TV

Apparently LG does not offer that one time panel replacement in Austria/EU and are asking for 1050€ if I want my TV fixed (panel replaced). I use the built-in pixel refresher once every week or two, use automated brightness and when I play in the dark, I lower it even more.
I also use the blue light filter so the image is even less bright and avoid using HDR except for the story driven games with dynamic HUD. Each OLED gamer should adjust the OLED Light and Brightness so that the image isn't too bright.
My eyes are a little sensitive toward bright lights so for me it isn't an issue (I have to use sunglasses mostly during summer anyway as my eyes would get irritated easily for a long exposure under the sun).

I bought the 65" OLED CX and its amazing. I also got the extended warranty from Best Buy. But I am also a casual gamer, couple hours here and there and maybe a few days in a row. Besides that Apple TV is on or some other programming. I do have a question though, will the choice of display matter? Example would be like choosing cinematic over vivid or other options that don't brighten the display to its max. Just a thought. Thank you for the video, it is very well informed.

Played about 3-5hours a day until I finished the game with a Platinum. On that final day, when shutting of the game and viewing other content I got a darkend area on the right side of the TV. It was shaped like a rainbow going from the center right of the screen to the down center of the screen. When I tried to shut the TV off I recieved a message on the TV, something about 2000hours screentime and that a pixel refresh was going to be enabled...after that the darkend ”rainbow” disapeared. Cant say if it was gaming related or not...regardless, Im happy with my C9

    I have my (expensive) solution:
    ● Get the OLED to your heart's content. Play on it varied games, for reasonable hours, preferably games that are devoid of static bright HUDs.
    ● Get another computer monitor to your liking (UltraWide, 300Hz, etc) for hard-core long gaming sessions.

    • @TJ.85
      @TJ.85 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My solution
buy a 2019 or newer oled (and not have to worry about burn in cause it's pretty much eliminated)
Pay only about half the retail cost and absolutely zero extra warranty to cost even more.
If SOMEHOW I end up with burn in and it's such a problem I can't take it I just go out and buy another (and probably years newer) model for again about half the retail pricing and love happy knowing I got 2 tvs for the price of 1 (roughly).
Anyone going into best buy and paying sticker price is a fool and you know what they say about fools and their money (easily separated).

I actually haven't bought an OLED yet, but when black Friday comes, I'm going for LG CX. Of course burn-in is a risk, but there is coming new TV tech in 3-4 years. So I almost hope that my TV brake about that time, so I have a reason to buy new one in 3-4 years. And when look the alternatives,... I just don't find any better. I would love QLED brightness, but I hate halos and I will watch movies also. And I'm from Finland so there will be text bars bottom. So if you wan't the best picture, I don't see that much alternatives. But in the end, I don't even believe that burn-in is that big of a risk, for me at least. 9000 hours? I have two kids, there is now way I can play that much even combine all games with the next TV I will buy. I will change the TV before I get 9000 gaming hour with it. So, LG CX 65" is going to be my next TV.

What you'll find is if you just stop worrying about it you'll be much better off just don't go out of your way to try and cause it and you'll be fine.
You'll notice anyone complaining about it is coming from an older model from 2017-2018 or earlier.
Current models from lg have pretty much eliminated most of the issues I've had a lg 2019 c9 oled for a year and game HARD and long and in 1 game only and it's one that 3 years ago caused burn in on my 2016 b6 within 3 months of ownership now more than 4x (probably like 8x) as much gaming has been done on my 2019 c9 in the exact same title and yet no issue whatsoever.
If that doesn't tell you it's virtually a non issue with today's models I guess nothing will convince you

I have played certain games like Destiny and Destiny 2, Overwatch, and several others for hundreds of hours. When you don't know what you are doing, a Destiny raid can take all day. I have no burn in from any of that. I do, however, have significant burn in from the logos for CNN and MSNBC. I've learned to live with it, but I am excited to finally be rid of it. However, now the LG CX seems like the best TV on the market and I feel like I am repeating history. That Panasonic plasma has been a real trooper for 11 years.
