  • Did Attack On Titan's Ending Ruin Eren's Character?
    Attack On Titan Finale made changes to the final chapter by changing dialogues and adding additional scenes. But was it enough to fix the controversial ending? In this video, I look specifically at Eren and explain the problems with his portrayal in the finale.

    Even if Eren had attempted a 100% rumbling, I don't think Mikasa and Armin crying over his death would be seen too horribly. After all, not only did he do it to save the island, but no matter what he did, he was still their best friend. It's like how a parent would react if their child became a serial killer. They know that, logically, they shouldn't love their child, but that's still their child, so the child's death would still severely impact them, regardless of said child's crimes.

Grisha would not have given Eren the titans he possessed and Eren knew that so he waited for the moment where Grisha's mind would be so messed up that he wouldn't be able to control himself.. thats when child Eren reveals to Grisha that now your second wife is dead too and its all because of the titans that attacked the walls. Grisha's hatred for Marley and the world ignited once again and in his pain, he ended up giving the titans to Eren because of future Eren's plan. Conflict and war will never end. Ending haters know that. Eren's goal was never to end Conflict among humans, he wanted to end the racism and cycle of hatred against his island people. And Isayama wrote AOT in such a way that either the world genocides Paradis or Paradis genocides the world. He finished 80 percent rumbling and the remaining 20 percent destroyed Paradis. Eren did not even secure his friends' future because the yeagerists on the island will kill them in an instant LOL. Eren is a failure and ARMIN is a joker. The formation of Alliance is the dumbest thing in fiction because they want to protect a world that hates their island

    I think the only normal explanation that he really wanted to kill everybody and HADN’T SEEN that he would not succeed. That’s why he said to Historia and others that he was indeed going to do that. And when founding titan abilities were obtained by him, he saw that in fact he won’t be able to execute his initial plan. And he changed it to what we have witnessed. I will think this way, because if not, it just doesn’t make sense and it is in fact quite bad ending

  • @thefanfictiontitan

    A lot of criticisms I saw before yours about the ending never really carried any weight, at least to me personally. For example, the ones you stated "were not bad things" like Eren crying in front of Armin, being character assassination. Another example is the whole Ymir thing. Something tells me Isayama did not intend for that to be taken literally. How I personally interpret it is that Ymir's self worth came from being seen by others as special, just like Eren. That's why she stayed with King Fritz. Because he made her feel special. Yours is the first one I've seen that has logical, hard to refute arguments and isn't riddled with logical fallacies. Also, do you think you will write a script for an alternate ending, or was that your intention with the "What if Zeke didn't catch Eren's head?"

    Unfortunately AOT definitely has a couple of plotholes towards the later half. It didn't really stick the landing. But I don't think it's the meltdown people pretend it is. Some of my anime only friends did say they thought it was very unsatisfying.
    I think a big problem is that a LOT of stuff is thrown at you near the ending without prior setup. Eren's true motivation ("I just wanted to do it bro"), Ymir's motivations (she was in love with King Fritz or something apparently), was all just quickly mentioned but kinda came out of nowhere. Eren having a twisted desire to flatten the world could have been hinted at just a tiny bit more (I do think the anime did a good job at it by when Eren goes Berserk in the final fight versus Annie, but I think a little more could have helped). And perhaps we could have seen Ymir getting groomed by the king (as horrible as that is).
    Armin's saying that he's as horrible as Eren also didn't feel right to me. I actually think it could have been a better scene if Armin didn't really reconcile with Eren. That he cannot forgive it.

      I agree with everything you said but the Armin part when you didn’t like about him saying he’s just as horrible as Eren because from our perspective we see Armin for being the kindest out of the main trio but from Armins perspective he dosent see himself as a good person and he also mentions that many times because he also has blood on his hands not as much as Eren but still blood on his hands even innocent children and Armin did tell Eren that he dosent forgive him but understood him and thanked him for showing him the outside world
      Sorry for my bad grammar

      As far as erens motivations, do u think they make more sense if u look at him as having mental health issues? Once he decides to activate the rumbling I thought "ohhh...school shooter" and he makes a little more sense that way. They always say they were pushed to that point, they had no choice, the got the power to show all the ppl that bully them, to a tee. Him breaking down to armin confirms this for me.
      Ymir and the king, well that is kinda still outta nowhere for me. I assumed her seeing mikasa kill eren was her way of knowing she could've stopped all her suffering if she was able to kill the king all those years ago but saying that still feels like a stretch ig.
      And the armin part, well armin reminds me of myself sometimes(not the tactics but the emotional aspect) and I feel like I get why he hugged him. I went in fully prepared to hate eren and roast his character, but after hearing their convo I was just kinda sad. Like bro it was never that deep. I want to still hate on him being controlled because it feels like it's not really his fault but overall I personally enjoyed it and would watch the whole series over again

      I dunno man. Armin kills innocents like once, and it was when he was attacking a military target. There was plenty of setup for all the things you pointed out. Ymir's whole desire to be loved and cared for, and to feel special was clearly shown in episode 5 of part 2. Frieda's conversation with Historia about "living in a way as to be loved by everybody" as well as the scene of a couple kissing while Ymir was watching are more than enough points to make sense of the final reveal. The show doesn't have to spoon-feed every detail to it's audience to know it. Same thing with Eren, he just said "I don't know why I did it" and people started screaming, thinking the show itself didn't give them the answer. Like for god's sake people. That's what Eren said! Not Isayama! Watch the part 1 special and within the first 6 minutes you're literally told that Eren dreamed of an unoccupied world free to be explored and that was his reason for initiating the rumbling. That's what freedom meant to him.
      "To save the island,,, to save Eldia... But there's more to this"

    • @herbert1012
      @herbert1012 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some ain't just came out of nowhere. He clearly said at part 1 that when he first realized that there were full of people outside of the island he was disappointed, because that's not what he had always imagined. It's understandable that at some point he started to think about erasing everything outside of the island after he further realized that all those people wanted the people on the island to die and not give them any chance.
      You think Armin should not have reconciled with Eren but I think the story just reflected how the world is. The dark side is inside everyone, but the most important thing that defines a person is the decision made after mixing all the senses. Armin made the decisions that most people can relate to while himself was able to relate to Eren and wanted to take the responsibilities with Eren. That's true friendship and I love that part.
      The fact that losing 80% of people is depressing but the show is depressing from the very first episode. I love that Eren, the main character, is just a normal guy and not a hero, because it showed us that in the real world stupid things like this would happen if one possessed so much power.
      The author said clearly in some interviews that he thought about happy endings, but he eventually gave up all because that's just not how the world works. I love it.

For me he is someone who rather mourns over the things he doesnt have than to appreciate what he has, which he only realizes in the face of death (Ending of season 2&4). The major flaw you showed me was, that we never really know what makes Eren love Mikasa, except him knowing her for long and her always being by is side.

    Eren can still intend to kill all of humanity outside the walls but not actually go through with it, wanting do something and actually going about doing it is two different things. The only way to have killed everyone is either by killing the alliance or taking away their ability to transform, more than likely dooming them to die at the hands of the Yeagerists. He absolutely didn’t want to either kill them or restrict their freedom, so holding back just a little bit was the only play to get everything that he wanted I.e. his friends are safe, Paradis is safe, and killing all the titans.

      Armin's & Mikasa's children's *AND* grand-children's generations would both EASILY be able to live long & happy lives; you don't survive from an apocalypse wiping out four fifths of the entire planet's population & a worldwide collapse of biomes, natural food chains & ecosystems, back to the fucking Stone Age with _Mad Max_ kinds of Civil Wars with primitive technologies & heaps of new waves of minor racisms against the surviving powers, without taking another fucking century to catch up, with Paradis' level of development *right now,* and that's even _BEFORE_ accounting for the national/cultural & political/militaristic stability of Paradis, the survivors' insects for survival & basic understanding of what self-defence means, the offers that Paradis could give for peace & economic salvation and their lack of options to enforce said things themselves would quickly legitimize Paradis' sovereignty over the remains of humanity, no fucking question, with or without Titans;
      I mean, you can assume the the Global Alliance's armada was completely decimated, as well as their trained militaries, and their supply chains, centers of culture, pillars of morality & of nationalistic morale; arable territories sterilized overnight & permanently transformed by the corrosive power of the elements by the time they can even recolonize those landscapes; everybody realizing it that once again, the Eldian Empire has reacquired their position of power that they had a century before, even without any Titans; if people could handle Marleyan oppression, then so will they handle the Elian's once again, I feel like a lot of bigotry, as it comes from misunderstandings & wild emotions, does not stand hard shifts in the paradigms of one's worldview & calamities revealing ANY inconveniently uncomfortable truths like the brutal success of the Rumbling;
      I'm sure that a lot of them will actually cower away from even trying to overthrow the new Global Eldian Super-State, especially since that'd take perhaps even _MORE_ than their entire lifetimes, and a lot more could also empathize or blame themselves for this calamity & thus cut the Eldians some slack, even if a (mere) few amongst those latter ones might still double down in some way & continue to antagonize idealistically against Parisians

    I would have much preferred Eren to have been entirely for the Rumbling, and in the end, his conversation would have been sorrow and rage, lamenting that he wanted to have been able to have a life with them, yet wouldn't abandon his duty to Paradis, that as it was back when trost was breached, he had a duty to fight for his people even if there was danger rather than running away with Mikasa. To have him chastise Armin for stopping a solution to Paradis being in danger, that people like him and Mikasa were the kinds of people who had no right whatsoever for such a thing, given that they already lost their family, but all the Yeagerists who they killed still had theirs and wanted them to be safe. Ending with him accepting it and simply telling Armin that the baton was his to try and preserve peace for however long he could, that he offered the only real solution there was because he (Armin) was no Erwin, and neither was Hange, even going as far to say that he realizes he was incorrect in stopping Levi that day, he just couldn't let his best friend die without a fight, because that's what he would always do, fight for his people and those he loved.
    Of course, I would have just liked the ending to be where he completes the rumbling, and from there, we get one of two things, an end to the cycle of hate, a world of only Eldians who are able to have the entirety of the world as a garden of eden for themselves, where it is a Final War, a War to end all Wars as WW1 was supposed to be, and that Eren had a grand purpose that he would have saved more lives in total by stopping the cycle of hate and violence (Have been a few anime that did the "Noah's Ark" "New Eden" sort of aspect) OR, where even after all that, more violence comes, we see no matter what it really never ends be it rumbling or otherwise, and Eren has one final breakdown like at the end of season 2 where he laments hysterically that "Nothing has changed."

    What do you mean real Eren, Eren was never one thing and him longing for Mikasa when his death/end was in view is not out of character. Not every one needs to express love in a high school musical kind of fashion

    Eren wanted to carry out a 100% rumbling, until he saw the future again in Paths where he learnt that he will be stopped by his friends. That means he did not lie to Historia :)

    Problems and plot holes in the ending:
    1) Ymir loved King Fritz, and she choose Mikasa to end "2000" years of Curse.
    2) Eren's motivation and retcon that he knew everything then why messed with his family and let his friends die? Even risked almost his every friend's life
    3) How Zeke and Armin controlled the past Titan shifters, only those who were related to them?
    4) How Eren transformed into Colossal if the worm was outside?? And how did Rumbling stop when Zeke died, even though Royal blood had no value after Eren manipulated Ymir
    5) How Paths and the Founding Titan really works?? Can anyone just talk to Ymir and say something philosophical there can change the entire century long power systems??
    6) What the thing was Cabin scene? It can't be Paths because Founding Titan's power have no affect on Ackermans. If this is another timeline, then what Falco titan was doing there and how Eren died even though it was not his end of 13 years term
    7) Importance of Ackerman and Azumabito ancestry of Mikasa
    8) Why humans did not acted against the Alliance, the Marleyan should have extracted revenge at the same point when Eldians said they can't become Titans anymore. And how the Alliance survived in Paradis, since the majority of Island is filled with Yeagerists, whose God or Messiah was killed by the alliance
    9) Importance and reason of Eren and Falco's dream, even though they were not Titan shifters at that time.
    10) What was Eren Kruger, Grisha's motive all along, to complicate things and make Eren fail??
    11) One thing more which is not related to ending, but for whole series, what was Karl Fritz and Tybur family's whole motive was about?? Why they took such suicidal actions even though they were really smart. Also why Karl made Wall Titans, if he refused for any retaliation??

      @@jaipandey7142 Eren's motivation and retcon. He never knew everything. He even said himself he only knew parts of the future not everything. The scene with Armin he said he tried changing multiple things but all ended with the same outcome he saw. If he knew "everything" he would've never tried changing said things because he would've known they wouldn't have worked if he "knew everything"

      @@cornishpastywastaken Let me tell you Eren saw everything from medal ceremony. There was nowhere mention he saw parts of them. He said he tried to change the future numerous times, but "all outcome remained the same" It means he did saw how the Rumbling would end and how Mikasa would be the chosen one. He knew this from medal ceremony. The fate was fixed already as he said in the ending. Now I would talk about what the retcon and contradiction were
      1) He knew that the Titan Curse would end, still he let and persuaded Historia to get pregnant by random dude
      2) He let Hange die for really no reason, if he actually wanted to save his friends, why giving speeches of Freedom and Tatakae everytime? Why acting like some gigachad all along
      3) He knew he would lose, and called himself an idiot to have such powers. Still he got his dear father killed to get the Founding Titan. He killed his mother, forgetting the value of her word "Because I was born in this world" to lose at the end, he messed with other family members, may it be Zeke and his grandparents, only to say he can't handle this power.
      4) He said it "Everything is happening as per my will" in season 4 part 2, with such a serious tone that he knew everything and took this big decision to proceed towards freedom with his own desire. Why not say as you said in manga "Everything is set to the stone" and you are slave to freedom and fate
      5) If we delve deeper in the series and all things related to it, because ofc AOT is such type of franchise that non significant things had significance, then we can see that there was no mention that Eren was slave to fate or would be stopped by Mikasa or anyone he loved. All you could observe is that Eren would overpower the fate and achieve freedom with crimson bows.
      There are more things to say, but yeah that would be too long and too deep.

    This ending was still a mess and has a lot of writing issues and cringe inducing moments. I knew Attack on Titan wasn’t a flawless masterpiece like the fanboys claim it to be, but this really enforced that they got carried away with the hype.
