Black Magic Desing is business magic. They understand perfectly the economic weight that means starting to work and making it easy from the first moment. The free software is functional with a relative difference from the paid one. They include licenses with many products that reduce the cost in some way, even if you can get more than one license and sell them that are not used, clean and legal. Updates with the best third-party software included. And all at a ridiculous price compared to other software of this level, like Photoshop. Empathic and human. A real and intelligent attitude.
Interesting way to test drive Studio. Or, for someone with the free version only to collaborate on a project with someone on Studio. This might be really helpful.
There are several synth plugins that do that and it's great. You can pause your payments and not lose your progress, so you don't lose that investment even if you stop paying for a while. The companies that do that are in the same category as BMD for me. Companies that understand a lot of their customers don't have money to throw around and might turn to other means to get that software and instead they just make it easy for those customers.
Looks Like a Good Idea. Many freelancers and small production outfits want their own perpetual licence, but larger production companies need variable numbers of editors depending on what they are doing. So it makes sense for them. You may have 1 or two full-time people but expand out to 10 or more for a few months for a project and then back down to 1 or 2.
It’s not a bad way to get users to try more advanced features and then hope they decide to either stay on rental or go on up to full version but I can’t see it being particularly useful in the long run considering the actual product is already pretty low cost at $300. Most would just rather buy the product and get it over with. I understand that Grant is anti-subscription model (and that is why Resolve has such traction and user loyalty now) but in order to keep improving the product by paying employees and generate a profit, they will likely have to go to some subscription model. We just have to hope that they understand that going the Adobe way of $50/month is entirely too expensive and $10/month for personal creators is reasonable. I don’t see this subscription model being a thing in the near term though.
That might be an option for me at some point in the future, to test-drive the studio version, but not right now. Not sure I'd see much difference with the hardware I'm currently using. There are a couple of features that'd be useful every couple of months, but I'll investigate when I've been able to replace my 8-year-old laptop.
I wish they had a pay monthly to own feature even if it costs like $25 more in the end! For starting off people like myself that can't afford it all in one swoop, this would really drive sales in my opinion. Like it's cloud only until you pay it off. Totally down for that
Like the options but it’s scary to think it could go full subscription at some point and that maybe we’re on some sort of slippery slope. And what if they get bought out or Grant passes the torch. It’s frustrating relying on tools for your art that just can’t be bought anymore, so hope DaVinci keeps non subscription as a core value
The thing is it doesn’t need to go down that path if only people didn’t subscribe, imagine if Adobe users said enough and stopped paying into their subscription model, really we can and should vote with our wallet so that sub model dies. I hate it.
This option is perfect! I've been wanting to try out Studio, but I don't know if I'll actually use enough of the Studio only tools to justify buying it, so being able to try it out for as long as I need to is great!
Blackmagic's model about they only do well if you do well is one of the most pro consumer moves from a major company in the industry, definitely gonna save up for the studio version in the future but for now the free version will do
This is one company I trust to keep the regular purchase option around, and most likely the free upgrades with every new major version. When I watched that NAB video I thought it would be nice for people have the free version and just need one studio feature for a project. Not worth investing $300 in but worth the rental. This is especially true for those who are early in their career and will find it hard to invest in a license.
This is awesome. I usually am fine with the free version, but theres one person i work with that gives me 10bit files that i cant use on my desktop, so i need to convert it, and thats a whole thing, as you know. So being able to just rent it for the month that im working on the project is perfect. And if i start getting more consistent work with them, then i'll just buy the full thing, but for the time being, this truly is the best bang for my buck, plus i cant afford to drop what is currently $425 CAD. (exchange rate hurtsssss)
I would love a rent-to-own option like a lot of plugins are doing with expensive digital equipment, synthesizers, or VST. I feel like more customers would purchase a rent-own-license with pause or cancel options for if they fall on hard times, then start up when back on their feet. Make the rent-to-own option a little more expensive than the flat-rate price and they would probably be rent/selling a lot more DaVinci Resolve licenses.
Rent to own would have more people but I think. Sometimes it’s easier to pay over time but renting will put people off, owning after a period will always make me buy, I have bought a lot of plugins for music that way.

Would love to see a way of registering my dongle license so that there's a record and back-up with BMD. Then they could issue a soft license if my dongle ever went missing.
Yes! Thank you! I'm so tired of the software subscription model. I don't care if I'm a version or two behind. If the software still works on my system, then it still works on my system. I don't want to buy something I don't need. Especially if the new version doesn't work on my current system!
This would be perfect depending on the price to try it out and give it a test run specially when you are not making any money from it yet. Great Video.
Hi, how do you activate subscription? I registered at Blackmagic Cloud and under upgrade section, there is only option to upgrade storage size (500GB for 15$) or add project libraries for 5$? If you maybe know, will upgrading storage be enought to try studio version?
Due to the price itself for davinci resolve studio, this is the very only software, where I would like to pay a monthly subscription instead of being stuck with the free version due to the price point.. So, I had a look at that "trick" and than I saw, I would have to pay 30 bucks per month!?!? Seriously? I'm sorry, but I'll stick with the free version... 30 bucks per month is just what!?... I would be fine with 15 bucks but with 30 bucks per month I could buy the whole studio version within 2 years..
The only reason the rental option exists is because production houses were requesting a feature like this that can enable many more users onto the Studio version for a short period of time for a significantly lower cost. So for example, if a production studio needs five editors, and the project will last for 2 months, instead of paying $1,500 for five Studio licenses, they just rent for a total of $300. It's the same concept with camera/gear rentals. Instead of paying tens of thousands for a camera body, you can pay several hundred or a couple thousand (depending on varying factors) to get the camera for just the duration you need it to allow for a much more efficient production cost.

I have a Studio license that I use on Windows, now I bought a Mac and I'm trying to use it there and I can't. It says it is not a valid license... Now what? Do I need to buy another one?
Back up, you can only authenticate with the license key twice? What happens if you reformat your computer three times, do you have to buy the software again?
You can only have two active authentications at any time. If you want to reformat you computer you should deactivate like I show in this video before to make sure that info isn't lost. I've seen that be an issue before but I'm not sure if BMD have addressed that since.
In my experience you can change the activations as many times as you want on different systems. Just a maximum of two system at the same time. If there are already two systems registered and you're trying to activate a third one, it will deactivate the two systems and acitivate it on the new one. Did this a few times without issues.
@@MaxHuisman When the license deactivates like this, does studio turn into a free version, or you need to whether clean install a free version or reactivate the licence?
They know if you try it you'll get hooked and will go into withdrawals if you try to stop. The business model of some other business but I can't think of whom.
People renting Arri cameras for projects instead of buying ;) This makes a lot of sense. Helps to drive some money for the product which is constantly evolving and unleashes the power for the projects which needs them
What a strange business model - making money by not annoying the customers or trying to nickel & dime them to death. Just kidding! Grant Petty seems to have a pretty good handle on things. There is a clip where he says, in essence, use the free version, learn it, and if you end up making money, think about buying Studio. So don't feel bad about using the free version. Why buy Studio? It has some cool features to help you work faster and better, even if you are just an amateur youtuber. If you are a wood-working hobbyist, you could do everything with hand tools. Or for a few hundred bucks, you can get a power saw and electric drill, and have more fun in less time with better results.
One thing worth pointing out is the reality of lifetime license and eligibility for all future upgrades. Suppose you buy Davinci resolve 19 for $300. They say that you will receive all future updates. But they are actually referring to only minor updates in version 19 like 19.1, 19.2 etc. . If in future they released a significantly upgraded version 20 then you may be asked to repurchase it. You do not automatically become eligible to get version 20 just because you own version 19. Just in case they release a new version every year as it expected in the age of AI then you end up paying $300 every year. I do not know about others but at least this was something I was not aware of.
@@drunkulasretrofuntertainme4746 Suppose today I purchased Da VInci Resolve 19. Now in future if version 19 is updated like 19.1, 19.2 then I will be eligible for those updates. But suppose after 2 years they bring a new version da vinci 20 then I may or may not be eligible for updating my version 19 to version 20. If I want to get version 20 then I may have to purchase it again. It is true that currently company is giving free update to version 19 for all version 18 subscribers but this policy may not continue in future. I hope this clarifies.
Huh? You pay for *_any and all_* updates So if you bought studio when it was Resolve Studio 16, you also get Resolve Studio 17, 18, 19 and future ones I don't understand why you claim otherwise, it isn't true at all You buy once and get lifetime updates - it is part of the terms of use

I had the free version and just bought the rental license. How do I download the studio version without buying it through the website? I load up davinci and it doesnt give me that log in because i cant download studio without buying it?
On the support page on the BMD website there are separate entries for free and studio and you can download the studio installer there
@@PatrickStirling appreciate your help❤️
Stupid question maybe, how do you download the studio version without paying first?
In the same boat did you find out how ??
So it's $30 / month for 1 license (no yearly contract) to rent ?
yup
Would be good if they give a trial month so you can test and decide if you want it.
Hey I have the paid version, for 18.6. Do i need to rebuy it?
Nope!
Hello . I want to buy an activation key in our city and I have questions. Should the shell itself be sealed upon sale? or is it open?
So Resolve 19 is still in public beta testing?
I can't get that blue screen to pop up when I log in I bought the license but there's no way for me to use it can anyone help
We need subtitles for the CEO's strong Aussie accent - and the fact that he speaks so fast makes it even harder to understand what the heck he is saying
Rent to own would be nice! (Qlab does this! And even does rentals by the day).
great information what i want now is to manage to switch my dongle to a cloud based license since im scared ill lose the dongle and there goes my studio resolve any tips on how to fix this problem or do i need to buy another license?
I have a Studio license that I use on Windows, now I bought a Mac and I'm trying to use it there and I can't. It says it is not a valid license... Now what? Do I need to buy another one?
Deactivate your license on windows, then activate it on a Mac
But I am seeing a $30 per month here 5:20 ? Isn't it a subscription model?
I lost my license dongle and DaVinci never responded back to Me after stating they'd help.
Great content, Patrick! It would be even more comfortable to watch if you didn't wave your hands in front of the camera so much. Thanks :)
the videos also make great podcasts!
The rental is $100 for one week. At the price it is worth it to just get the full version.
I'm still seeing $30/month personally. Where are you seeing 100 for one week?
@@MaxHuisman Thanks for info!
@@MaxHuisman When the license deactivates like this, does studio turn into a free version, or you need to whether clean install a free version or reactivate the licence?
Oh you're right!! forgot about this. super useful feature
They know if you try it you'll get hooked and will go into withdrawals if you try to stop.
The business model of some other business but I can't think of whom.
I believe Grant is a business genius
The moment it goes subscription, as they say in Shark Tank, "I'm out!"
People renting Arri cameras for projects instead of buying ;) This makes a lot of sense. Helps to drive some money for the product which is constantly evolving and unleashes the power for the projects which needs them
Thank you very much! This Option is very interesting for me!
Finally! I can test it out for 1 month first 😀😀
That is why I love Grant Petty!!
So how much is a months rental? Would have been nice to know.
I'm kinda weird in that I like dongles. I'm more from the DAW world though.
You saved my a... budget for beta AI functions.
90% Off?!!!!!
it is $30 a month, how is it cheap?
I get it but still ... sound like a foot in the door for subscription.
Not while Grant's in charge
@@PatrickStirling I hope so, got my studio and love it. It is such fun to tinker / play with it.
For big companies, subscriptions sometimes make sense, definitely not for individuals.
Ya grant is so anti subscription I doubt it will happen while he's their
@@rano12321 10. Greed is eternal.- Star Trek reference
Just more options it seems to me.
The business model alone is why i didn't get into the adobe eco system
ahhh. here comes the adobe way, which is to force you all to subscribe eventually.
don't see that happening. you can feel Grant's passion about this in those clips
@@PatrickStirling maybe while Grant is in charge. I hope this model is very profitable for them and they do not need to change to the Adobe way.
No one can force you, if we don’t pay then they have to rethink it. Unfortunately too many keep Adobe happy this way because they won’t make a stand.
I buy the studio now if i can make money out of it i will buy blackmagic hardware
Da Vinci resolve should also have integrated text to speech features that uses AI voices for their videos.
why was his shoulder moving so much?
y are u concerned about his shoulder movement instead of the information he is giving? Be thankful he is healthy to deliver the updates for us yearly
@@faroukzanoun Relax bro, getting triggered for a simple question ahahah
Save your self the misery boys, it's not %90 off, he means you just subscribe for it monthly for $30! instead of buying! Thank me later.
I am afraid to press the deactivate button :S
Kinda Clickbait 😮

Man that's one MAJOR twitch!
Ah I find it charming😅
The updates have been for all major versions. Are you saying that's changed or is this speculation? A "What if"?
@@drunkulasretrofuntertainme4746 Suppose today I purchased Da VInci Resolve 19. Now in future if version 19 is updated like 19.1, 19.2 then I will be eligible for those updates. But suppose after 2 years they bring a new version da vinci 20 then I may or may not be eligible for updating my version 19 to version 20. If I want to get version 20 then I may have to purchase it again. It is true that currently company is giving free update to version 19 for all version 18 subscribers but this policy may not continue in future. I hope this clarifies.
Huh?
You pay for *_any and all_* updates
So if you bought studio when it was Resolve Studio 16, you also get Resolve Studio 17, 18, 19 and future ones
I don't understand why you claim otherwise, it isn't true at all
You buy once and get lifetime updates - it is part of the terms of use

Davinci resolve is free. What 90% off? Fix your title.
Studio isn't.
DaVinci Resolve also offers a paid version - "DaVinci Resolve Studio"
And that one is definitely not free.
