Great testing results! I've used the Supertech 10,000 mile full synthetic and changed it at 5,000 miles max. It's a great deal for what you get and very cost effective!
I use the supertech synthetic and change every 3K-3500K miles. Never an issue. I even use their filters too. I could probably get more miles but as cheap as it is why not!!!

@@j.t.cooper2963 I think it's excellent oil for the money when used in the proper application and changed when it's supposed to be. I ran it for 80,000+ miles in my sister's 2013 Ford Edge. It always came out pretty clean and all of it came out. That vehicle did a lot of college tour trips and mixed driving. My sister traded it in back in maybe 2018 or so for an Equinox. I then ran ST in that for almost 100k that she had it (more college trips and moving from NJ to NC). She just traded it last year on a preowned Audi. Now she gets her oil changed since I don't live nearby anymore. LOL. One time I showed up just for a visit (she lived about an hour away) and she said, "Thank goodness you're hear, the fridge stopped working". I always carry tools with me and I kept tools at her house. I had the machine figured out in 15 minutes. I stayed over (long weekend) and when morning hit, I made a phone call with the part # for the part and it took longer to go get it than to fix the machine. LOL.
I've never used their engine oil, but I've had great results with Supertech Mercon V transmission fluid in my 4R70W. I change it every 40k miles and at 320k miles, it still shifts like it did when new.
Thank You!! I have 223000 on my Toyota Sienna been using ST Synthetic since I purchased at 105000. I change oil every 5000 miles or six months been extremely happy engine uses no oil and has no leaks.
I use Castrol Edge High Mileage Full Synthetic 10w30 and the analysis numbers seem better than the Pennzoil. My car is an older car. It's a 2001 with 326,000 miles. I change the oil every 5000 miles. I have used Castrol since I started driving at 16 years old and I'm 48 now. If I was going to change it would definitely be Pennzoil but I'm sticking with the Castrol. Good video
My daily is a Camry and I also drive a 14 Expedition. During beer flu I put but around 5000 on it in one year. As long as the Supertech is the full synthetic and is Dexos approved I usually use it because it is some much more cost effective. I put the savings into a synthetic media filter (won’t say brand because I don’t want a flame war). With 5 cars to maintain at my house I have to be smart with the money. Having said that I do prefer the castrol 0-20 high mileage in the 14 Corolla.
Great video. Waiting for 5W-30 full synthetic Pennzoil Ultra vs Valvoline Extended Protection matchup. Not being critical here, just my two cents while watching your video. When comparing two oil data sheets, overlay one sheet onto the other so that the columns are closer together/next to each other. By doing this your hand isn’t moving as much back and forth, the camera stays stationary and all columns will be in the same view. Have a great day and love your videos.
A few years ago I did a little research on different oils and for the price compared to the ingredients in the different oils I went with the SuperTech 5w30 full synthetic. I guess according to these tests the SuperTech is still right up there. I don't run any more than 5000 miles but usually around 4000. I've never been a pennzoil fan but this shows me that pennzoil may have finally improved their oil.
Pennzoil oil was a Pennsylvanian crude wax based oil, it was a horrible oil that gummed up your engine, so was Valvoline and Quaker State. Shell Oil purchased both Pennzoil and Quaker State and changed both formulas to asphalt based oil which was much better. Of course today we have synthetic oil which is better yet.
@@robertstennett7566 I remember years ago when I was working as a mechanic you could tell those that used quaker state and pennzoil. You're right there was always sludge in the engine.
I was using valvoline full synthetic every 6 months and would need to add about half a quart . Tried pennzoil platinum and needed to add a quart in 2 months. Tried castrol edge full synthetic back to half a quart in 6 months.
Hello Ford Boss: Thank you for your research & oil analysis of the major brands. It definitely opened my eyes & I couldn't disagree with your extensive testing results. Thanks again, TMP FROM N.J.
I've been using ultra synthetic Penzoil for a while now and haven't had any issues. At $26 for 5 quarts, and under $10 for a quality filter I can't complain.
I've run the ST FS 10k at 7.5k change intervals in a chevy 6.0 vortec (with fram ultra filter) (ever since it had 100k miles) - got 350,000 miles on it now and still running great!
Thanks Rich great stuff. Once my oil change package runs out I’ll have consider some of these. I use motocraft semi might stay with that, I go 3000 to 5000 or 5 months.
Thank you so much, I just got Kirkland Signature 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil 10 qt on sale for 32 dollars, I think this and superteach 10k are the same oil, for this price, this is nothing wrong, I do 3-4k OCI on my Yaris. If I use the best oil like Pennzoil Ultra, which cost 32 dollars for 5qt,I will still do 5-7k OCI, double the price. To me, for non-turbo engines, it is better to use cheap oil but more frequent oil changes than more expensive oil.
@@DominiAeternum Because some gasoline will pass by and mix with oil. Even 5% gas mix mix with oil will makes the best oil performance drop below cheap oil level. You can watch project farm. He tested different tire of pennzoil. Some engine burns a little bit of oil and that is very normal, especially turbo engine. Change more frequently will help people know about cars to avoid low engine oil level.
@@Felix的DIY生活 oh okay. Didn't think about that, but didn't really think that was much of a problem with any car. I've never really heard of this until recently too. Strange
@@DominiAeternum its a bigger problem with newer Direct Injection GDI Engines with Oil Dilution (gasoline contamination). As user-pu7rl2il6o mentioned looking into Project Farm's youtube channel for testing and comparing Pennzoil oils and simulating oil dilution in GDI engines.
I use the 5w-20 ST high mileage blend in my sisters CRV which now has 140k miles, and been using it for 3 years now, no issues. Change oil/filter every 4k-5k miles which for my sister is once a year. Use Fram XG synthetic filter. I noticed in WalMart the other day the 5w-20 High mileage synthetic blend is now 21.40 for a 5 qt jug. Before it was 17.60. Also changing the CRV oil I notice fuel dilution by smell which is common in high mileage engines.
My store supertech synthetic blend is called " all mileage synthetic blend" 17.97 per 5 qt jug. Supertech high mileage full synthetic 21.48 5 qt jug This is pricing off walmart app set to my local store. Did you look at the wrong jug by accident? They all look similar.
Does the CRV have direct fuel injection?. They seem to be more susceptible to oil dilution. Not good for the engine. You may want to reduce the change interval.
I've always felt Warren oils are quite good for the money. Good to put real numbers on it. I use whichever full synthetic happens to be on sale at Meijer or Walmart brand (both Warren) in my 30 year old Lincoln and it works just fine. Any off the shelf oil is so much higher quality then what was available back then! On the other hand the 5 year old car I bought new and is powered by a little 1.0L ecoboost engine - that gets the fancy name brand oil. Recently (like 2 years ago maybe???) Ford updated their Motorcraft full synthetic to the newest ILSAC GF-6 specifications and thus I simply use that plus a Motorcraft filter. (edit: prior to that it was rather difficult to find the correct oil which met the Ford specification - even Ford didn't stock any!) Keeps it simple and I change every 5k miles. Motor I'm sure will last forever. It really is that simple. Currently that car is just shy of 50k miles and looking at the valve train through oil filler everything is still silver inside. Minimal to no varnish and definitely no sludge buildup. 2nd edit: I suppose I should put my 2 cents in about the other brands in the video. I never liked Mobil 1 all that much. I've seen a lot of independent testing where it didn't do so great. The Pennzoil brand on the other hand has great quality. Shell (makes Pennzoil) is essentially #1 for industrial lubricants. They make everything from motor oils to gearbox oils to synthetic silicone grease. All fantastic top shelf stuff! Also helps my opinion because they have a couple of large factories still operating in the Ohio River Valley rust belt near where I grew up. A bit of hometown pride you might say.
@@workingcountry1776 Funny thing is that this car started doing lots of dumb stuff so I wound up selling it to carvana before its worth tanked. Things like start the car and the radio settings are changed. HVAC doing whatever it feels like. Windshield wipers stopping in the middle of a downpour. Then the engine started looking like it was going to require some major repairs sooner rather than later. I didn't need a commuter car anymore so I dumped it. Ford quality has gone to pot.
For my gm 4.3 v6 and just started buying Costco oil, it's also made by Warren oil. GMs factory fill is a 5w30 synthetic blend. I figure that buying Costco synthetic oil and reducing the OCI to 5k instead of the 7.5k specified by GM I should be saving money and maintaining the vehicle above and beyond what GM requires. @@DominiAeternumtowing heavy I still didn't burn oil in my 300,000 mile Nissan Titan work truck at 5-6k oci. I did 7-8k miles with no problems in my wife's Armada. Good penzoil platinum oil in both. Wife's car 15% town and rest rural or interstate highway. If we lived in a big city 5k for sure
In my 2010 ram 1500 5.7L ive been using supertech full synthetic with their filter and i sub out 1 qt for a qt of lucas oil stabilizer. Been doing this for years now. Runs super smooth.
Pennzoil ultra platinum is just a really good oil for the money usually. I get 5W-30 5 qts. for about $30-$35 from NAPA or Amazon for my DI 2.5T Mazda since it seems to maintain it's viscosity very well over the OCI and prevents LSPI. For some reason lately it has been more difficult to get regular pennzoil platinum and ultra platinum in a few viscosities for their normal good price, but I assume there is just a supply shortage for some reason.
The ONLY thing I might be worried about ... is the spot sample. Do different SuperTech batches test out similarly. Probably just me being overly paranoid... Thanks for the vid FBM!!
No. It's blended by fuel company not reseller. Physically impossible to blend an add pac at a filling station. At least at any place my sis worked or friend owned
Thanks Rich! I've always wondered what the difference was between the 5, 10, and 20,000 mile supertech oils. I want to run supertech but I keep going back to Pennzoil ultra platinum because the difference in price between the 20k ST and the pennzoil is only $3 for a 5 QT jug of 5w 30.
@@mcsqueegee81 Yes, I've been having difficulty finding it at a reasonable price. I went with regular Pennzoil Platinum instead. I don't think it will make that much difference, even in a turbocharged engine.
I bought a 2009 Jeep Liberty with 80K on it. I changed the oil using Supertech full synthetic high mileage every 4000 miles. I now have 180K on it. Runs so smooth, no leaks at all, no oil used between changes.
I got a 2012 3.5L ecoboost. The timing chain growled at me 3 times upon startup, each time, i was 6,000+ miles into my OCI of my pennzoil platinum. I went to supertech HM w/3,000 mi OCI, and the truck hasnt growled at me since. It's been over a year.
From what ive been hearing the reason Mobil 1 is so high priced is those nascar endorsements. There are way better oils on the market then mobile one for better money
I wouldn’t say Mobil 1 was crap but it’s certainly an expensive product to use,I only use the cheapest oil I can find as long as it’s the correct speck for my vehicle,I never leave in for more than 5000 miles and never had a problem with any vehicle I’ve owned and I’ve had a lot of vehicles and done a lot of miles.
bottom line I would never wait that long to change my oil. I drive at most 7000 miles per year. I try to change every 3000 miles at most. But some of my vehicles get such low mileage that i have to change them with fewer miles because I always hear it's not good to let them sit more than a year even if not driven at all.
I wouldn't run any oil to 10k. I think you said it well, it's a 5k oil which is what most folks can and should do. Use a good quality filter, make sure it meets/exceeds the requirements of the vehicle you're using it in and change it as you should. With that a good engine design should last a long time. I'd roll with the full synthetic 5W30 which is what I use. It's now the "10,000 mile" formula. I wouldn't use that anyway. I don't even let my OCI get below 50% or so. Oil and filters are cheaper than replacing engines. Prior to ST being Dexos 1 certified, I was using QS Ultimate Durability and it was maybe $22 at WM for a 5 quart jug.
I use PP high mileage full synthetic. That one would be interesting to test, probably similar to ULTRA. They claim it helps clean rings and passages better. The 5w30 makes my close to 200K mile 6.2L so smooth I thought it stalled  I don't know what was in it when I got it (was clean oil) but it is definitely an improvement. The base oil is also very high quality, made from natural gas. Also cleaned up the engine considerably since I got it! Says to use 5W20 but the Ford Place told me they only put 5W30 in 6.2Ls so that is what I use.
Does it really matter which full synthetic oil you use? As long as you change it every 5k miles or 6 months, use the correct viscosity, and you don’t drive it like a race car. I imagine there is a point of diminishing returns. Maybe the extra additives would let you go over 5k mile intervals. But if you’re changing it at 5k regardless, then it doesn’t matter. Similar to how some people filter their city water with activated carbon, some use reverse osmosis, and some just drink the city treated tap water unfiltered. And they probably all live to the same age.
Eew, drink nasty city water. Sorry that's just disgusting for anybody that's had a half way decent well like myself. When I used to love in cities I used breta pitcher
Kitty wants a ride in the panther! I was using supertech full synthetic and I hated when they recently brought in their different varieties. The 5000 mile, 10000 mile, and 20000 mile are redundant and just serve to push prices higher. I use the all mileage synthetic blend in my generator 10w30 never gets cold here
I have been on BITOG forums for over a decade and have never seen an M1 analysis that actually looked worthwhile. Mobil's marketing certainly is a market leader for creating such a loyal following.
They only test for those items though. So my question after seeing this is what else may be in those oils that possibly differentiates them from each other.
It's a decent oil especially for the price, I run the Dexos2 5W30 in my Buick over the AC Delco Stealership oil that I get for free ,but it's drum 🛢 oil & not full synthetic, rather spend the $20 bucks & use a better oil, I only use it for about 5 k to 6 k miles & filter it with a AC Delco UPF63R gold filters as the 3.6 tends to be a sooty engine
I just put this oil into my 07 Yaris with 220,000 miles on it and it just felt like brand new car all of a sudden. It feels like I just put in alien new technology oil or something.
Hey there's nothing wrong with you sticking with what works for you, just realize it's not very good oil it's mediocre lower end of the middle of the pack that's all these videos are about it's to shed some light on what is out there and what you're actually paying for but it's not to change your mind on what you're using because if it works I'm an advocate for continuing to use what works but I'm also an advocate for truthful information and not bad information like the mobile one community and the mobile marketing team like to push and their oil is like not even really that great it's just okay at best
Thanks for taking the time to do this! Nice to have a simple explanation of all these numbers. Quick question. My wifes 2021 powerstroke has had all its scheduled oil changes at the dealership. What is the standard oil you guys use in the powerstrokes? Any personal preference on oil for those? In our 6.7 Cummins I always ran shell Rotella synthetic. Just trying to take good care of this truck.
Good test, i did not imagine Mobil 1 numbers reading that low, i always run that and my Daily has 303k miles still driving like new, loves mobil one.. But good to know they have better cheaper options.
I’ve used super tech full synthetic for 10 years in all my vehicles and the only complaint is now in 2024 it’s about the same price as Quaker state full synthetic .It cost me $18.98 for 5 quart jug of 0w20 full synthetic and there’s Quaker atate and valvoline all full synthetics for just $3 more. But I keep buying super tech and it says 10,000 miles but I change around 6000 miles.i use it in 3 vehicles .
What about Valvoline? They make strong claims their full synthetic is 24x better than leading competitors and their additives claim to restore seals etc… any thoughts on them?
One thing I've always wondered.... Back in the day I always heard people say not to use Penzoil because there were waxes and sands in it. Any truth to that? Also Boss, could you recommend a synthetic that would be good to -55F? (lately I've been using Q Full Synthetic 5w30). Thanks 🙂
My second hand understanding is that the Pennzoil of 30 some years ago is very different from the modern Pennzoil. These days ultra platinum is just about one of the best oils money can buy. But used to be they had a bad reputation for issues like what you mention.
The formula to figure out milage. (TBN expressed as empirical constant of 12/extended, 8/synthetic, 4/conventional)×10×(oil capacity in quarts)×(cubic inches/horsepower)×(observed mpg)=interval
I gotta be honest, I trust actual testing vs numbers on a chart. TH-cam ch "Project Farm" is not affiliated with any company, and did the most extensive head to head oil testing I've ever seen anywhere. He came up with several different ways to test each oil brand. So extensive, it took multiple videos to complete. The most impressive ( for me anyway ) was his bearing wear test. The gadget he made for this test is genius, and ensures that every oil tested is fair, using the same bearing type, even the rockwell hardness was the same for each identical bearing used in all testing. The Amsoil full synthetic clearly had the least bearing wear. This bearing wear test and all other tests he came up with, resulted with Amsoil beating out all others. Go check it out for yourself. Like me, before all of his testing began, Project Farm initially thought that Amsoil was over-hyped and over-priced. Not anymore. Him and I both are sold on just how good Amsoil full synthetic truly is........and I'm sure most other viewers were equally impressed.
I got to be honest with you, with me being a professional in the field I get people like you that come by the Channel all the time to think that they're going to tell me something or say something that's going to change something based on how I do things and I got to laugh at that because they think they have some kind of power over how this channel runs but they don't. I like project Farm he's a good guy but there's not enough regular number testing that needs to be done and everything that I've said on this channel and all of the ways that I lay out things and the way the numbers point project Farm has pretty much rated them in the same category maybe a couple of them have been switched but not very far from each other so I must be doing something right to not have to spend the money to do the garage testing that he's doing but instead I'm doing lab analysis testing on my own So if you're going to try to correct somebody or make suggestions on how something should be done maybe you should go do that somewhere else but not here now if you're going to stay for the party and you want to build a relationships and friendships this is definitely not the way you do it and you should try to rethink that
I actually and part of the Marvel Mystery Oil team and I help develop the new synthetic formula Marvel most real as well as I'm a professional in the field to senior master technician at a dealership plus I also have my own garage So I actually do this more as a profession than the people you're trying to leave your faith in that don't do this as a profession they're just youtube personalities
Obviously an Amsoil salesman. Look Amsoil is good. In Alaska we have convenience stores selling Amsoil because of the cold temps. Amsoil shines in gear lubes, and transmission fluid because of the longer change interval. But seriously, the numbers do NOT give Amsoil the edge in motor oil. Pennzoil Ultra and the GTL base is equal to or better than Amsoil PAO’s. You’ll pay twice as much for Amsoil. On those two it comes to Add Pack. And they are really close. The numbers don’t lie. There’s no major advantage to running your oil over 10K, which is what you’d have to do to be cost effective with Amsoil. Amsoil is talking crazy running 25K. The only other oil that competes with them both is Schaeffers with some PAO, high Moly and Antimony (which isn’t picked up by Blackstone). Talk to the Hotshot truckers. They use a lot of Schaeffers, way more than Amsoil. It really comes down to effectiveness and price. But for MOST of America running our daily drivers, Pennzoil Ultra makes the most sense. This argument always goes to one point- extended drain intervals. And I’m saying you are gambling with your hard earned cash running over 7K with anything. It’s really how much you trust that little sticker on the silver bottle of oil you just paid $17 per quart for.
TBN isn't the same these days. When the zddp went down, they changed up the detergent package and Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc went from 12-13 to 9-10 and after 10,000 miles the Mobil 1 that started at 9.9 was higher than the old one that was 12.6.
To do that you would have to use two different oils in the same engine, one at a time or the results would be skewed due to how two different engines would contaminate the oil.
@@davidlong1786 i think if you ran 2 oil changes the second oil change would be good enough to test. Unless you have a zillion dollars testing facility, it wouldn't be scientifically accurate no matter how you did it. I don't think that much accuracy is needed for this type of testing
Actually it's not it is the pre-oil use because each engine is built differently and they are taking care of differently so virgin analysis is actually more important to be honest with you used analysis may be more important to figure out what's going on with your particular engine and how you're taking care of it but me doing a used analysis would not actually do anything for the rest of you in the grand scheme of things it would just show you how my particular vehicle is running

Thank u Rich for ur awesome oil reviews.
I've been using supertech full syn for years every 3000 miles. No issues. Plus it's cheap and easy to do.
Thanks Rich great stuff. Once my oil change package runs out I’ll have consider some of these. I use motocraft semi might stay with that, I go 3000 to 5000 or 5 months.
Thanks for that information. I guess I going to switch from Mobile 1 to Pennzoil Ulta Platinum.
Why do you say "better" to use cheap oils but change more frequently? Good oils are good oils no matter what engine they go in.
Wow super tech beat Mobil 1 didn't see that coming
Supertech high mileage full synthetic 21.48 5 qt jug
This is pricing off walmart app set to my local store.
Did you look at the wrong jug by accident? They all look similar.
Does the CRV have direct fuel injection?. They seem to be more susceptible to oil dilution. Not good for the engine. You may want to reduce the change interval.
Short trips
Except that is a very low milage engine. I didn't have fuel in my oil at 300k miles in my Nissan. Sis needs to drive it hard once in a while.

Watch turbo on those 1L. It's a major recall but your PM is better than most non fleet customers
@@workingcountry1776 Funny thing is that this car started doing lots of dumb stuff so I wound up selling it to carvana before its worth tanked.
It's cheaper at Walmart. Never buy oil at a car parts store it's way overpriced

I think a higher TBN with the same additive package is due to base oil. Ester and PAO base oil has less acidity.

@@dondownriver3464 Yup! Mobil 1 always test on the lower end of performance in all the test I have ever seen.
Yes because moisture build up and will not burn off keep up what you are doing
@@cr2158 How many highway miles would it take to "dry out" the crankcase and oil of a car that has been sitting?
I’ve used supertech for 20 years. Full synthetic and I change it every 5500 to 6000 miles. It has worked well for me.
What effects do you get from PP oil?
My research shows that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is the same thing as Shell Helix in Europe. Good stuff but, you have to search to find it.

I've used Supertech for decades now. Keep it clean & full. You'll be fine.
I have been on BITOG forums for over a decade and have never seen an M1 analysis that actually looked worthwhile. Mobil's marketing certainly is a market leader for creating such a loyal following.
Agreed
They only test for those items though. So my question after seeing this is what else may be in those oils that possibly differentiates them from each other.
It's a decent oil especially for the price, I run the Dexos2 5W30 in my Buick over the AC Delco Stealership oil that I get for free ,but it's drum 🛢 oil & not full synthetic, rather spend the $20 bucks & use a better oil, I only use it for about 5 k to 6 k miles & filter it with a AC Delco UPF63R gold filters as the 3.6 tends to be a sooty engine

Thanks for taking the time to do this! Nice to have a simple explanation of all these numbers.

I like project Farm he's a good guy but there's not enough regular number testing that needs to be done and everything that I've said on this channel and all of the ways that I lay out things and the way the numbers point project Farm has pretty much rated them in the same category maybe a couple of them have been switched but not very far from each other so I must be doing something right to not have to spend the money to do the garage testing that he's doing but instead I'm doing lab analysis testing on my own
So if you're going to try to correct somebody or make suggestions on how something should be done maybe you should go do that somewhere else but not here now if you're going to stay for the party and you want to build a relationships and friendships this is definitely not the way you do it and you should try to rethink that
I actually and part of the Marvel Mystery Oil team and I help develop the new synthetic formula Marvel most real as well as I'm a professional in the field to senior master technician at a dealership plus I also have my own garage
So I actually do this more as a profession than the people you're trying to leave your faith in that don't do this as a profession they're just youtube personalities

Hi are comparisons preuse or analysis after use .
TBN isn't the same these days. When the zddp went down, they changed up the detergent package and Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc went from 12-13 to 9-10 and after 10,000 miles the Mobil 1 that started at 9.9 was higher than the old one that was 12.6.
Can you do a comparison of after 5k miles. It's nice to see all the pre-use results, but post use is really what needs to be evaluated
Actually it's not it is the pre-oil use because each engine is built differently and they are taking care of differently so virgin analysis is actually more important to be honest with you
used analysis may be more important to figure out what's going on with your particular engine and how you're taking care of it but me doing a used analysis would not actually do anything for the rest of you in the grand scheme of things it would just show you how my particular vehicle is running
This is why I’ve always used Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my 2019 F150 5.0L, with 5K mile oil change intervals. I’ve never had any oil consumption issues with it either, after 53K miles so far.
Rich, even though the 2019 3rd Gen 5.0L suggests using 5w20, what do you think about using 5w30 in it instead for more viscosity protection?
Love Ultra Platinum. I use it in our ‘19 CX-5 and ‘17 Camry SE. Cold-flow properties are outstanding, and there is zero valvetrain noise.
Stay with the 5w20. You want the oil to flow through your motor at the correct rate. A 530 will flow slower and may cause damage overtime.
@@miketerry6036As a 3rd generation mechanic and engine builder 5-30w will flow just fine. People talk as though the passages are sub micron in size. Obviously they have never opened up an engine!!

They have almost the same numbers and even though super tech is okay it's not really anything to brag about and neither is mobile one
