  • Amoco petrol commercial from 1972 transferred from U-Matic videotape. This commercial features an old rusted out 1920s car in a field which gets brought back to it's former glory with the insertion of Amoco petrol and featured is a bunch of young hippy adolescents dressed like they were living the roaring 20s. The jingle was written and sung by Allan Johnston from HertzWalpole Advertising. Some years later he teamed up with Alan Morris to form advertising agency Mojo which would do jingles for many commercials in the 70s and 80s.
    The tape containing this ad came from commercial director Barrie Smith's collection.

    I have seen the other Amoco commercials but this is the one that sticks out in my memory. The car sitting in the middle of a paddock and it becoming a beautiful clean vintage car again with the Amoco song and it being driven away. Me as an ugly teenager couldn't help but feel jealous of all those beautiful people.

    I remember when this ad came out ,I was in 4th form in high school.What a different way of advertising back then ,simplistic and romantic. Man how things have 😊changed , no tats or the like .Wow I miss those days with girls in cheese cloth dresses and those broad brimmed hats .

    TH-cam is magic! I remember perfectly the day when my dad came back home with a flexi picture disc featuring this song. I still have it at home, but sound quality is so poor that I hopelessly typed "Amoco in my mobile", and here I am! Thank you so much for uploading this!

    Wow... thanks so much for posting this! This particular ad stuck in my head for some reason (at the tender age of 6) along with various Amco Jeans ads, Fanta ads ('there's real orange in Fanta') and Lolli Gobble Bliss Bombs (remember those?). The early 70s in Australia had a wealth of some very cool and groovy ads, along with some great music - others would have to include the Razzamattaz ads, 4711 perfume and Underdaks ('one day, you're gonna get caught with yer pants down!')

    I loved this ad when it aired in '72. That year I turned 10 and I really got pumped and excited whenever it came on. It doesnt have quite that effect now but it's a fine musical piece of creativity nonetheless. Great strong and catchy chorus.

    A masterpiece. Inexpensive to produce, no celebrity faces required, and it hit the spot. As with some of the very clever tobacco ads of the sixties/early seventies, people still remember it almost half a century later.
    My favorite from that era is the very first "Stanley" Golden Fleece gas ad that raised a tornado of viewer protest, which perhaps wasn't that bad for the company. ( "The only bad advertising............." )

    • @peterpiper831
      @peterpiper831 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember the Stanley "outrage"
      I remember my mother saying " Don't people have better things to do with their time."
      In hindsight, the "outrage" was probably marketing spiel for attention.

    Brilliant, I remember the Amoco song, had not seen this advert before, I remember there was a later advert driving a red or orange Morgan to this song. Does anyone remember an advert of same vintage as this, I think it might be a Shell advert which featured these 2 dudes travelling around Australia in a white XA Falcon, they had names like Dazza and Kev something like that...?

    There was a longer cinema version, a photo flexy-disc, billboards and a Dolly magazine feature which gave me a false name because I was teaching at the time ... on tv the ads were shown in black and white until march 1975, but were shown in colour in cinemas from 1972 in the longer version. Hope this clears ups few misconceptions

    In 2020 it's interesting that we don't see petrol companies advertised on TV this way - do the companies realise how toxic their product is or is it a case of knowing it is a necessary evil if we want to drive our cars?

      I've noticed that women's bell bottoms have made a little bit of a comeback of sorts. I remember seeing a young woman ages ago, was probably early this year or last year wearing floral bell bottoms. Although all that kinda fashion was well before my time it's pretty well nostalgic. Puffed shoulder pads on jackets and platform shoes were all the rage in the 70s.
