Whistlin' Diesel is doing an Homage to the Top Gear Hi-Lux at the moment.........he's giving one a real hard time and it's taking it like a Boss, as you would probably expect. Only problem is it was an absolutely mint thirty year old truck when he started. Thing belonged in a Museum.

I had a '90 Toyota pickup for 19 years and put over 400K miles on it, basic maintenance was pretty much all i did and it was still running the original engine, trans and drive line when i sold it. best vehicle I've ever owned.
Not to bag on Toyotas, but I had a '63 Falcon Ranchero with a 170ci straight 6 and 3-speed manual (27mpg) that I finally sold at 282,000 miles, having done only oil changes/tune-ups during that period. I did do a 45 minute head gasket R&R when my little brother overheated it towing my mom's 1960 Chrysler New Yorker Station Wagon 22 miles home on the freeway. It did need a clutch plate or two now that I think about it, but those were easy, too. I miss that "truck" more than my ex.
More than a few old Hiluxs gone around the clock on original engines and drivelines here down under. Then there's Landcruiser's, by 282k Miles they'd just be run in mate!
@@dunxy That's been made abundantly and redundantly clear, here and elsewhere. But the Hilux wasn't really ubiquitous here; by the time "compact" trucks caught hold in the USA, that model had been replaced. Here, the early '60s saw a rising trend in planned obsolescence among American car companies, with a few makes/models escaping that fate, whether by design or chance I couldn't say. The Falcon was one of those. Many Americans don't consider that the reason the US car industry was doing so well in the '50s and '60s wasn't because of superior quality. It was because every other industrialized nation on Earth had been bombed flat in WW-EYE EYE - except Australia/New Zealand, and they were never automobile powerhouses. I guess that's why they brag about Japanese cars. Anyway, America never had to try too hard to compete until Japan, Germany, etc. finally recovered a decade or so later. Then some Yankee ass was kicked, but most of us, myself included, were still scornful of foreign (read "Japanese") cars. Ironically, I still wasn't convinced (call me stubborn) when I saw back then a Chevy Vega, a car with an aluminium block that _lacked steel sleeves in the cylinders,_ (you heard me), with "100,000 miles" proudly spray painted the length of the car. It was laying down a smokescreen that would make a destroyer escort proud, maybe in the belief it would conceal them from the cops. I only hope they were being sarcastic. Back on the subject, I'm not sure you're making a valid comparison to the Falcon; the Hilux was made and marketed as a truck, albeit a small one. It had a truck drivetrain and suspension. The Ford Falcon line was predominantly a family car - for small families, apparently. The Ranchero was a station wagon with ⅔ of the roof cut off and compact car suspension. I ignored its ostensible frailties and thrashed it like a red-headed mule's rented stepchild. I once hauled some topsoil 15 miles home with the differential gouging a groove in the asphalt to varying depths and the front tires occasionally touching the road. I was surprised the rear shocks didn't punch through the bed. Because of the obvious difference in intended uses, I believe a "miles driven" comparison handicap of... say... 3:1 is in order. I'm glad you agree. Ranchero wins.
Yes, bring back the trucks AND the ads! Those "sheep-shaggers!" I 'bout fell out of my chair when I heard that one! I love this! Thanks guys, and please keep them coming. This is about the only decent commercials we ever get to see. Here in the U.S., it's all about selling "medicine" and electric this and electric that, and whatever the latest fad is this month, and other unwanted and un-needed crap. They seem to think nothing of pushing their pills, but we can't advertise beer, tobacco, or having anything politically incorrect according to the snowflakes.
Got a big kick out of these. Funniest was the two bulls. Wouldn't cross the cow gate but jumped the canyon. And didn't show up empty handed. Thanks for sharing with us.
Absolutely hilarious ad's, especially the "Bugger!" one! That red 80's Hilux is my favourite of them all, and seeing what Top Gear did with their Hilux made the point that these are pretty damn good trucks! Subscribed.
Thanks for the vid. I loved the "Well there is one other way you can get in here, and that's it right there". I've never owned a Hilux, but I do have a 1974 FJ40 Landcruiser. My idiot brother-in-law once rolled it into a dam. I drained the dam overnight, hand-winched the FJ40 upright and out, changed all the fluids, and it's still going.
None of these were banned. 38 years old from Australia and I saw most of them on commercial television many times. And I’m guessing the South African ones I hadn’t seen were never banned either.
A lot of these ads were on NZ tv. Certainly not banned. Indeed the Barry Crump adverts with his sidekick Scotty were a part of growing up in NZ. Great ads!!
I grew up in Australia so seeing all those old Aussie Hilux ads gave me some serious nostalgia. Also, the ads worked I drove a N70 Hilux before I rolled her at Cape York
Hey, nothing beats reliability. Even warlords understand that. Same with the U.S. Army and a whole lot of others. Only sheep are buying "American trucks" that aren't made in America anymore.
My dad owned a HiLux that ran like hell for what he used it for. He drove it to the ground as he tended to do with other trucks. Thing served him for 15 years before he wrecked it on a telephone pole and the insurance totaled it for a few bent body panels.
On my hunting trips I’ve got the Browning 725 in the very back of the 200 series Land Cruiser, Sako 85 across the back seat and next to her is the Browning T-Bolt varmint. Center consoles full of 22ammo, rear cargo area carries about 2000 rounds 12g and I’ve got 200 rounds 243 on the floor behind the drivers seat. Everything where I need it. 🙂
Once saw a compilation of the "Bugger" ads on a UK programme celebrating wacky tv from around the world (maybe 30yrs ago, now) and it finished with the sheepdog in the puddle. Cried with laughter - and never forgotten the product! Absolute epic!!
Yep, definitely Kiwi ad’s! Funny as! There was another Scotty and Crumpy ad too where Scotty was traumatised when they arrived at the hut! He screamed all the way in!
I have seen about half of those adds here in Oz. The 'bugger' ones were from Kiwiland and clearly a South African ones as well. But hey they are disposable 4wds when you drive a Landcruiser.
It's actually... well we all know what it means. Frank Zappa even wrote a song about it. "Don't fool yourself girl, it's going right up the poop chute" or something.
Actually, bugger was/is used more like aww crap. And "Well bugger me" means "well I'll be" or "I didn't expect that". But yes, sheep shagger was pretty good. Those "bugger" ads in the late '90s were so funny I had tears from the laughter.
"Banned commercials" gets more clicks than 'retired Hi-Lux commercials. I had an American version Hi-Lux way back in '75, great little bugger of a truck.
I thought some of the red Hiluxs in the first ad (50 years of Hilux) were taken from Top Gear adventure going to the north pole and that icelandic volcano, well it's quite close, they're Hilux modified by Arctic Trucks, the firm who prepared the car for the TG team.
…I actually got choked up on the last one. Took me by complete surprise even though I knew going in it was the makers intent. Good job if you can catch me.
Why do people insist on bigging-up their videos be falsely claiming that ads are banned? Toyota doesn't piss away millions on ads they can't show, all of these appeared on television - if it wasn't in your country, that doesn't mean they were banned. It just means they were not meant for your country.

Barry Crump (in the Hilux commercials with Scotty) wrote the book that was the basis of Taika Waititi’s movie ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople”. An old Hilux in the movie was named Crumpy as a nod to him.

Then he drove the Oldsmobile, Jetstar, V8, 1966) The one ad, not here, was about a Hilux bakkie and how a wo-man belitle her husband. We talk a long time about this ad..... And how the ad-adjency actually did a good job.
Almost as good as the Top Gear segment where the truck survived being left in the ocean, set on fire, and on top of a 10 stories building that collapsed!
Question what are our Aussie Hilux ads doing on a BANNED ads video when we saw them all here in Straya? They were the last of the great ads we saw here.
Great collection, just a little disappointed that it's missing the Scotty & Crumpy in the city version - I don't know if it got banned but there were driving standards complaints! Most I recall from NZ Tv - Toyota NZ made some great adverts for the Hilux
Agree its disappointing that this particular ad is missing as was an hilarious counterpoint to the ads with Crumpy and Scotty in the country. The ad was banned in NZ, I saw it only once but it was promptly withdrawn because of traffic issues in particular were Scotty attempted an illegal short cut through a bus only tunnel and was forced to back out by a bus.

the south african ads with the boxer dogs where not banned
The last one was actually a add in Australia
4:45 Barry Crump did his own driving for the commercials
There was another ad similar but Crumpy drove Scotty’s new HiLux into the bush. Scotty was traumatised by the time they arrived at the hut!
I loved the '73 four speed I had. Boy could it go!
Question what are our Aussie Hilux ads doing on a BANNED ads video when we saw them all here in Straya? They were the last of the great ads we saw here.
We've still got the project manager one out here in Aussie
When you watching this Video and then a Hilux Ad plays🤣
Brilliant, I remember all those over they years here in Oz. Had our Rav4 17 years, wouldn't part with it.
The only Hilux ad that was banned you've left out.
Cool collection of old ads but not like from me for lying clickbaiters.
I had two 4x4 HiLux pickemups. Best small trucks ever made.
