- TV commercial from around 1970 for Amoco petrol featuring Sharon Redd (an American who came to Australia with the stage production of Hair), Groove Myers (vocals), Peter Clark (bass), Allan Johnston (guitar) and Graham Woodlock (tambourine).
Brings back memories of me a 9yr old Brit who got relocated to Sydney in 1971 (parents were £10 Poms...my dad was sold a dream, but we ended up in a high rise block in Eastlakes, which at that time was rough as dog shit!)) ...my sister got this as a floppy vinyl (red) promo 45rpm (think it was free insert in a magazine)...I played it a lot & remember the advert on the TV airing heaps! Nice tune...and there's nothing like a bit of reminiscing :-) (oh, we only lasted 2.5yrs out there...Mum got homesick, I'm typing from London as a 58yr old bloke)
One of my earliest memories as a child - the power of music! Wouldn't go to bed until the ad finished.... its a dead-set classic Aussie ad - and to see it in colour - WOW :-)
That's me driving the car. They gave me a phoney name ( I was moon-lighting) for the Dolly Magazine feature about the ad. it was a big deal, 2 weeks to shoot, near Jamberoo, NSW. It was everywhere,... I don't have the flexi-disc.
God I actually remember this ad - I must have been 3 or 4 at the time - I remember the rusty heap transforming into the drivable car. I remember also we also had a copy the song on a one-sided floppy translucent red single - and I mean one-sided, the reverse side was completely flat! Obviously some sort of promotional give away of some sort
Dolly gave me the false name of David Bryant, and turned me into something other than a serving teacher in the Education Dept, who got very snitty about any outside earnings by their slaves... Dolly told me I got heaps of fan mail, but I never saw it ... I took a group of kids to see "2001" an the very big screen at the old Barclay theatre, and they played this commercial ... after the first ten feet of my nose came on-screen, the kids almost rioted.
Just seeing it after all these years was enough ... ("The Sleeves! ... The Sleeves!)
It was a different world.
I still have the vinyl single.
OMG! I have this on a paper 45" picture disc. Was released as a promo.
That's amazing! 40+ years just vanished. As a kid I found this trippy and slightly scary. The hairs on the back of my neck are standing on end. Thanks so much for posting.
And NOBODY played the tambourine like Graham Woodcock ! !
R.I.P. Amoco (1889-2002)
Bloody hell! I still remember all the words.... my old man used to work for Amoco. We were brainwashed! I still have an old Final Filter in the shed.
OMG! I remembered every word!!! Scary!
@feebsquared I have it on the red plastic single that came with Dolly magazine which I played many times while I still had a turntable. Still love the song, though it's probably mostly due to my nostalgia!
What a road trip down memory lane
God...this brings back memories!..I remember seeing this ad when I was a young girl....thank you for posting it!
This ad is the AMOCO Flower Power spot from 1972 and Allan Johnston sang it.
@fringelily You were right the first time. I remember watching this in primary school when I was about 9 or 10 so '71 -72. I've never seen this in colour before and we had a colour set in 1975. I LOVED this song and used to be so pumped when it came on. I listen now and it doesnt do it for me lol. But thanks for the upload. First time since the 70's I've seen this.
That's fantastic. How great to be part of a legendary ad. Thanks very much for the info - I always wondered where that was. If you want the songs on mp3, contact me.
I worked in the advertising department for Dolly mag when the promo disk with this commercial and Amoco in my Machine was featured in it. I used to play it a lot, loved it. Wish I still had my copy.
I still have my copy somewhere. It's a red single-sided floppy record. Plays at 33 1/3 if I remember correctly.
Nice, clean petrol with lead at no added cost!
Hi stoping by and check in in. Bests and Bests to department.
Brilliant!!!!
This so great seeing this TV add It was Just the best THANKS
I had the Flexi disc in 1972 gave it to spin a dozen times and then lost it
I still have the flexible 45 record of this!
I believe this was the Cinema release for the ad. Running at over 2 minutes, I don't believe it would have aired on TV at the time. either that or there was a shorter version of the same ad.
gupsnot Was definitely a shorter add it finished where car had been refueled and rejuvenated it's self and drove off..
GROOVY!!...
And then there was Walgett, Billy are you still alive? There is another Pat now and lots of history.James
Thank-you for this video, I to had the Red Plastic Record with the Amoco theme... If eneyone can tell me what the other track was Ide be interested to hear about it.
It might have been called 'Amoco in my machine'.
Anyway, here's the link

I have a promotional single picture disc. The 2 tracks are called "A preferential matter" and " Where the mind can breathe"
Wow you got to sit next to Sharon! I'm jealous!!!
Great advert. Great to see it again. Never noticed before but there is a little error in lyrics. "My tyres are suffering from lack of deflation." Probably should've been lack of inflation!
@destinysmuse Well, I'm an old guy of 64 years now, recovering from a knee-replacement surgery ... time marches on ... we all need to remember that and make the most of our youth and optimism while we still don't need crutches, lol.
@fringelily you should know that as a 10 year old watching that ad i fell in love with the dream, you and the car. I always wanted to be the lady in white. The only disappointing thing for me is that all these years i thought the car was white.... to go with the romanticism of the white field of flowers and white clothes. It is funny what tricks our minds play on us.
Not quite ... the information given is incorrect ... it was shot in about 75-76 ... not 1970 ...so it's about 33 years ago.
I've been looking for this for a loooong time, thanks.
If you're talking about Sharon Redd, she may be on the vocalsbut she's not on-screen. it's all so long ago that I forget the name of the model next to me, but she was nice. There were a couple who became reasonably well-known actresses in Aussie B horrors, like Carla Hoogeveen ... i went straight back to teaching, having made a bit of dough, enjoyed an experience I hadn't had before, but finally deciding that the actual process of filming and doing stills photography was brain-meltingly boring.
Nice clean petrol.
Correction ...Ive just re-counted ... i was about 24 so it was about summer1971-72
@sawbird Absolutely. I played it at 3RRR years ago. I'll have to try and find it for a laugh.
@catey62 You're welcome. It does bring it all back.
@feebsquared It's a thing of beauty, but did you ever try to play it?
This is cool, from a time when even oil companies had heart. I don't know what it is now with TV, but is it really necessary to have so many bloody ads for hearing aids and nursing homes and effing mobility scooters. FFS not everyone is over 75 in this country!!?
@DollnDogLuva You're welcome! Glad you like it...
This was the first (and worst!) of the Aussie Amoco ads done by the famous 'Mojo' advertising agency. It dates from around 1975. The 'final filter' and great old cars became a feature of the Amoco ads until 1982.
+chewie211171 It was Hertz-Walpole Advertising. MoJo was a later incarnation from a couple of the HW staff (Morris and Johnson)
What so bad about it ? I like it
Really? I loved this ad as a kid and still do. I think it's the best one.
@fringelily
Hello and hope you are a school teacher, at melrose park eh ? We are having a get togetheer and your ad is mentioned so i 've been trying to track ya down ? Hope ya reply.mal from the MP ers
It was plasticised cardboard, there was no "other" side.
Well, those of us who are still alive are all old-farts now.
I think they've been sniffing petrol
