You couldn't pick up the basket because it still had items in it. It removes the inventory spaces associated with the slot it is in. So if it's in the first bag slot, it provides the amount of inventory slots at the start of your inventory grid (in this case 3) and so on. So the dropped basket still contained your fire starter and berry bush. Lucky you didn't actually lose much of value! Also, you should get a notification in the chat box when temporal storms start and end, not sure why that didn't pop up. Bony soil can be panned for treasure and resources. You can also pan different kinds of sands for early game copper (and other resources) if you don't find any surface copper. Poor return rates though, will take a while. Bony soil just has more treasure items. Some ruins do have basements with useful stuff, though most don't.
Congratulations on surviving your first temporal storm. :) That one was pretty mild; they will eventually get much worse..... You couldn't put the handbasket in your inventory because it had items in it. It is best to completely empty backpack items before swapping them out, because if they have any items in them they can only go in a backpack slot. By dropping the handbasket on the ground and letting it despawn, you not only lost the opportunity to recycle it for some reeds, you also lost everything that was in it (which admittedly wasn't much: your firelighter, some berry bushes, and a goat horn). I hope there wasn't anything important in the second basket. :D Lead has very limited uses; in particular, you can't make tools from it. It's nice to have later in the game, but you can't do much with it early on. In the early game you pretty much need copper specifically. The coal will come in handy for smelting metal. Don't waste it on cooking food! You can break cobblestone with your bare hands. You don't need to use the knife. The only tool that speeds up breaking cobblestone is a pickaxe.
came here to say that lol also with the baskets once empy you can use a knife to break them down to like half the reeds I believe. as far as I know you cannot do that for future bags
So for now, when you cook a six serving meal, just take the pot directly out put it in your inventory and then set it on the ground every time you need to take one serving
Just eat your food out of the pot. You still need to scoop it out with a bowl and then eat it however I would save the crocs for long-term storage. Like when you get yourself a seller and you’re able to make six servings back to back to back to back to back and then you’re able to store all that through for the winter time.

you can change block appearance by chisel. makes some pretty neat structures.
