Snake was never finished actually, the original trailers for the characters back then were simply sprite animations showcasing how they would behave in an ideal scenario. Same for the "screenshots", they're simply images using sprites from many 2D games plus some made specially for the game in the original forums
That's true. I too used to believe that the dojo screenshots were real gameplay footage, but doing more digging just made me realize that they were just photoshops and not in game footage.

It could easily just be a case of the devs themselves not wanting to add them. The modern dev team is very different from the one that wanted a bunch of anime characters and OCs in the first place.
I feel the only reason Cloud was cut because the team thought a 'third party rep should be one with Nintendo History' which is how we got Black Mage instead. This may change thanks to Smash 4 and Ultimate.

I knew “Topcat” (AKA Theoriginalblade) back on the forums long enough to eventually make the jump to adding him as a Facebook friend, and I’m pretty sure he had Cleod as a friend long before me. His career made him less accessible for a while, but contacting him wouldn’t have been difficult, I was doing it at the time. I recall mentioning the tension around what ultimately became the cut to him. Frankly I was a lot more upset about it than he was. Maybe that’s still a sort of disappearance, but it came from willful ambivalence. He remains a cool dude anyhow.
Eevee is not an anime character by definition, it debuted in the games. If being in an anime makes you an anime character, then fucking Mario is an anime character too.
Unironically love the old fan characters, especially Azrael and Spikeman. They definitely should've had their own games because when you look at all the archived SSF2 stuff, i think there is a lot of potential.

I don't think there's anything to say Snake was finished, the mini-trailers from back in the day were basically pre-rendered cutscenes with no actual gameplay. They had the sprites but there's no evidence they actually programmed anything.
They should make a character like Levi from attack on titan, his main mechanic would be using the stage or people to maneuver himself using his "odm gear." It doesn't have to be Levi if your against anime, but that mechanic would be awesome in the game. Feel me?
@@GGMK2002 The SSF2 roster had a revamp around demo v.0.7. Sending characters like Cloud, Diddy Kong, Zero, Shadow and Kratos Aurion into 'unconfirmed' territory. They're neither confirmed or deconfirmed. They're in a void of they may-or-may-not come back for SSF2.
Kratos would've been super cool to play as. Lloyd being in both Super Smash Flash games is what got me into Tales of and for years Tales of has been my favorite gaming franchise of all time. I thank these two games for that.

I always thought the anime character "issue" was a lot of needless whining. It got to the point where the devs genuinely made a google poll over whether or not there should be a toggle that hides the anime characters or even straight up removed them if I recall. Very weird thing to get fixated on especially when it's a fan project that has no obligation to stick to official standards and there's only 4 anime characters out of 47 total characters. In my opinion, it's the biggest thing that gives Smash Flash it's own identity. If the devs don't want to add more then that's fine, but they really shouldn't feel the need to appease people who are somehow unable to handle the existence of anime characters in a smash fangame.

I can vibe with Snake, but I disagree with Mewtwo. Given that this is a fan-game, and they can add any of the 1000+ Pokemon, it'd be dope if they added an original Pokemon character of their own rather than reusing the same Pokemon you can use in Ultimate.
@zatodoge9369 they can add Mewtwo and still add an original Pokemon. Mewtwo is a highly requested character and that's why they brought him back in Smash 4. He hasn't been good in any of the real Smash games he was in but Project M a Smash mod for Brawl made him a goat and I believe the SSF2 dev team would do him justice and make him a goat in SSF2.
That's so dumb! I think it's a great idea to add those anime characters, since we'd never get them in a real Smash game. If they had a problem with Sasuke, Vegeta, etc, just go play the real Smash Bros and leave us with our dream pics

I remember the original planned roster. I just don't recall Rock Lee being in that. Some cuts were made in thoughts on how fan thought Third-Party 'must' be presented, which is how we got Black Mage over Cloud in SSF2. But Sakurai will surprise us by the most simple and logical answer of reason to add Cloud, he was the most requested Final Fantasy Character and is most recognizable. Who knows, we might get Cloud in SSF2 after all.

I think it was also the fact it was in the prime “hate anime sword fighters” and by extension anime characters, phase of smash. Vegeta could had played as some sort of echo fighter to goku. His neutral B could had been a big bang attack or final flash. And sasukes neutral B could had been chidori.

Allegedly, none of his ideas could happen because he got busy with college. However, Blade and the other OCs were always planned for SSF2 until the roster revamp. Blade and Blue's creator also left the internet suddenly but I don't know if that contributed to their cut as I did hear that they were still being worked on after that point.
Pretty funny to see Jump Ultimate Star character sprites being put to good use in a fan game. It's a shame that never got ported back in the day. I remember importing it and using a gamefaqs guide to playthrogh the story. Fun little game.
They should add Vegeta and make thing like if goku and Vegeta are in team and one of memeber gets final smash they should make goku and Vegeta fuse and randomly show Vegito or gogeta

Who are SSB purists to make calls on what characters should or shouldn't be in a fan game that solely exists to "what-if" characters into the game that people have been begging for since brawl and melee? This is why purists make zero sense. They just want a sprite-based SSBM instead of SSF2, and it's a massive spit in the face to players like me who have been around since SSF1.
I respect the sentiment here but this feels really reductive. SSF2 does not "solely exist" to add requested characters, and it also isn't just made for the people who played SSF1. Saying it has to be that way because it's a fan game doesn't make you any different from the people you're describing. SSF2 has an impressive level of polish and accuracy to the point where it almost feels like a real Smash game, and that's always been one of its biggest strengths. Plenty of people play it for that reason and there's nothing inherently wrong with them thinking a certain character doesn't belong in it. Obviously there's people who take that notion too far and that's never okay, but I don't see how just saying you don't want the game oversaturated with non-game characters is any different from what people say about the official games' characters all the time.

I remember the original planned roster. I just don't recall Rock Lee being in that.
Some cuts were made in thoughts on how fan thought Third-Party 'must' be presented, which is how we got Black Mage over Cloud in SSF2. But Sakurai will surprise us by the most simple and logical answer of reason to add Cloud, he was the most requested Final Fantasy Character and is most recognizable.
Who knows, we might get Cloud in SSF2 after all.
Yeah Rock Lee was only ever mentioned on the forums, as well as being cut according to the devs due to fan complaints

I think that it’s really dumb and close minded to say that Smash shouldn’t have anime characters! It’s just a fighting game about a kid’s figurines! So any characters that exist as a figurine including anime should be included!

I think it was also the fact it was in the prime “hate anime sword fighters” and by extension anime characters, phase of smash. It was something echoed by a fair chunk of the smash community and content creators so I think that’s probably why there were so many pushing against it. I don’t agree but that’s my theory
i might be misremembering but wasn't riku from kingdom hearts also supposed to be added at one point? i recall seeing it on the wiki that he was planned early on but eventually added as an assist trophy come sora's resprite
Yes, Riku was a fighter in the older SSF2 roster plans. His sprites were ripped from the same game as Sora's.
Vegeta & Sasuke are big enough I think for it. I'd enjoy more anime characters in!
I'm hoping they add a new anime character someday, and my candidate is our green hair crubaby Deku. With all the power he has now he has enough to make a full moveset with unique mechanics.

Wow, they cried so much the devs just said “Fine then no more anime characters” it sucks to because you could really visualize some of their move sets already. Vegeta could had played as some sort of echo fighter to goku. His neutral B could had been a big bang attack or final flash. And sasukes neutral B could had been chidori.

@@wrrrryyyy12The only OC that was removed per request of the creator was Robo Ninja, because Raccoon wanted to use the character in his own game projects. Allegedly, none of his ideas could happen because he got busy with college.
However, Blade and the other OCs were always planned for SSF2 until the roster revamp. Blade and Blue's creator also left the internet suddenly but I don't know if that contributed to their cut as I did hear that they were still being worked on after that point.
Pretty funny to see Jump Ultimate Star character sprites being put to good use in a fan game. It's a shame that never got ported back in the day.

Who are SSB purists to make calls on what characters should or shouldn't be in a fan game that solely exists to "what-if" characters into the game that people have been begging for since brawl and melee?
This is why purists make zero sense. They just want a sprite-based SSBM instead of SSF2, and it's a massive spit in the face to players like me who have been around since SSF1.
I respect the sentiment here but this feels really reductive. SSF2 does not "solely exist" to add requested characters, and it also isn't just made for the people who played SSF1. Saying it has to be that way because it's a fan game doesn't make you any different from the people you're describing.
SSF2 has an impressive level of polish and accuracy to the point where it almost feels like a real Smash game, and that's always been one of its biggest strengths. Plenty of people play it for that reason and there's nothing inherently wrong with them thinking a certain character doesn't belong in it. Obviously there's people who take that notion too far and that's never okay, but I don't see how just saying you don't want the game oversaturated with non-game characters is any different from what people say about the official games' characters all the time.
