Its always in winter coming to a warm, clean home that smells of baked bread ... It is one one of the oldest memorys i have. That day the house gave us all the biggest hug ever... Thank you for this wonderful video!
It would be Rivendell without a doubt. That passage in Fellowship always gives me that sense of 'hiraeth.' The presence of beauty and knowledge as well as the safety to pursue them, always make me wish I could live there❤
For me it's my nana's kitchen fresh from an hour outside picking blackberries whe I was a kid. The furniture was mismatched, the old aga cooker kept everything toasty warm, the kettle was boiling for nana's cup of tea and I had a mug of hot chocolate as we washed the blackberries, peeled apples and made an apple and blackberry crumble together. There were still sheep up the farm then, so we could hear them bleat occasionally outside.
My cosiest place memory doesn't involve a house! But hear me out. It's a memory of being snuggled in a blanket on a beach, in south Devon not far from my home. It was a small cove, in the early morning, the earliest days of autumn. The sun was coming up and my family were quietly chatting and drinking coffee around me while I drifted in and out of sleep. And then I remember seeing sailing g ships on the horizon in the morning sun. It was such a contrast between my safe cosy spot on the beach, and the hint of adventure in the distance, I'll never forget the feeling. So I guess for me, coziness at its best always has that little contrast. Whether it's a view of some distant hills through the window (which I know most of us don't have), or some pictures on the wall or music in the background that evoke the same feeling. My favourite moment in the hobbit is when bilbo is sitting in his snug cozy living room, with the fire burning low and the dwarves all begin to sing and he looks out the window and thinks of distant lands. Again, the contrast heightens the senses, and coziness is all about a place of safety within a world of uncertainty, so you kind of need a little of both! Just my take. Loved this video x
Alice, that quote of yours gave me such a peaceful feeling tonight as I am terribly stressed over the election results in the USA. I hope you don't mind that I started today's journal entry with it. Your entire piece of writing was lovely. Thank you.
@AZsunflower you are most welcome! I have a lot of family in the US and have also been very concerned by the election result. It seems we all need our little places of safety now more than ever. I wish you all the best.
One important thing to keep in mind for designing the home is the influence of children. Rivendell, at the time of the War of the Ring, had few (or no?) young children running around underfoot. And Bag End was extremely unusual for a Hobbit house in that it had no children for so long. Sam and Rosie's home at the end of Return of the King with 13 children scampering around is much closer to my life! I used to keep a lot of decorative clutter but, now that I have young kids, minimalism is almost a necessity. If you have a bunch of stuff sitting out, then you're going to end up spending all your time cleaning it up over and over rather than spending time with your family. (And forget having anything visible that's at all breakable!) A home can't be very comfy if it's too messy or dirty. While minimalism can be sterile, I think that its best feature is really that it saves you time as the Home Maker so that you can devote those precious minutes to activities that really matter.
As a mother of 4 under 4, and three of them boys, I definitely understand this! However, my house still feels very cozy. I have collage wall with a mix of paintings, cross stitch, and two mass printed pictures. I love the needlepoint pillows with bird scenes, and I have a spring needlepoint blanket. I have a fireplace, highback piano, and hutch in different areas of the main living spaces that I can put the more fragile things. Lots of wood adds to the warmth, as with gold and bronze accents. So while my house is more minimal with items, the items I do have a warm and cozy and it doesn't feel sterile at all.
Such a great point! I'm glad you brought this up. Home gets a lot more lived-in with kids, but I think that actually makes it even cozier. Thanks for sharing! 💛
My cosiest place was a boat I lived on for 2 years. It was 100 years old when I bought it, a wooden 2 mast 34 feet ship clad in this beautiful dark wood in its entirety. You would enter through the middle, then to the front you'd have a fully functional mini kitchen that was attached to the living room. 2 sofa benches with cushions with a good sized table dividing them, and a fireplace. Little bulls eye windows all around and a skylight overhead brought in tons of daylight, plus the lamps were yellow and super cosy, plus 2 lamps had dimmers. There was a shelf all around the wall with a tiny bookshelf, and a curtain that leads to the middle of the boat. I've never felt more at home than in there, I barely used the bedroom by myself because the front was so incredibly cosy. I learned how to properly cook in there, with limited ingredients due to lack of space, and I usually had a playlist going to set the mood. The cat loved it too, the kitchen bulls eye window was always open for her. I dream of maybe building a tiny home some day with a kitchen - living room like that, as the house I live in now has so much more space but is harder to cosy up. I just don't really like white walls and grey carpets. Lovely video, thank you for all the suggestions and getting me to reminisce about the old times 😊
A quiet 9 hour train ride with beautiful countryside views, rain, a book to read and a notebook to write. Can you feel the movement of the train? Can you hear the sounds of the train and the rain?
Grandmas house especially during canning season… the clicking of glass jars and metal rimmed lids. The smell of whichever vegetable or fruit being preserved.. can forget to the smell of earthy dirt from the potatoes and radishes that were unearthed and brought in for washing and to be eaten with nearly every meal. That was and still is the coziest spot I know. I now reside in that place and those memories are still vivid and I strive to have or make my own cozy..
Coziest place was my childhood bedroom. What MN are it cozy? Knowing that the hands that built it and touched every square inch of it were my dad's. I could feel him in the very walls and it made me feel so safe. My room had a porthole window right over my bed and I would stand on my pillow and watch the stars until I was too weary to stand any longer. I could go on forever about that room and its contents. It was magic.
I love Myquillyn Smith! Her design books are my favorite. I always think of Rivendell, the last homely house, and how it was portrayed in the movie; so much light, nature in everything, the idea of peace and healing everywhere.
My favorite cozy place was a coffee shop in Seattle, near UW (back in the 80's). They played classical music, quietly, baked fresh bread and desserts, and made expresso drinks. It was the best place ever, except a large used bookstore that was basically the same. Each had comfy chairs that made you want to stay there for hours.
I love Seattle and always wanted to live there! My daughter went to Seattle in 1989 when she was only 19. She lived there about 15 years and we visited several times. On one of those trips she worked at Greenwood Avenue Bakery and it was wonderful! We walked from her house to the bakery every morning for fabulous espresso and pastries! Cozy and yummy!
"minimalist is peaceful at best, soulless at worst" - that's such a good reminder! really enjoyed this video 🖤 i am a cozy maximalist, & try to combine the shire, rivendell, & molly weasley's style but still feel clean & cozy & like everything within the home has a home as well ✨ also, candlelight is definitely superior!!
Thanks, Harmony! I've followed you on Instagram for ages, and I have to say I LOVE your home decor style. Thanks for inspiring us all with your cozy content! 🫶🍁
The coziest place I ever have been to was visiting my mom's friend's home. She is a multimedia artist who lives in a cottage. Lots of art, different creations everywhere. Super cozy!
Thrift stores are an old, old friend of mine. I love to change things and freshen up the look in my home seasonally and at other times just for the heck of it! I go to the local thrift store with my nickles and dimes and come home with treasures I enjoy for a while and then donate them back and bring home new things to enjoy. Win win ! 😊
When I think of cozy memories the first experience that comes to mind is an evening my husband and I went to dinner at Hopscotch Brick Oven and Tap Room in Traverse City, Michigan. It is the closest I have ever felt to having dinner at the Prancing Pony. They make pizzas in a brick oven that is behind the bar. There are wood barrel tables, no overhead lighting, and the booths are small and wooden where people were sitting playing card games while enjoying ale. We visited in December so it was cold outside and they have outdoor fireplaces and igloo tents for outdoor dining experiences. We now go back every year❤
Thirty years ago my husband and I lived in a small three room cottage on a hill in Arizona. Each of the rooms had a fireplace. I loved that cottage and never wanted to leave. I am 74 and have lived in 29 houses, but I loved that cottage the best. It is not too far from where I live now, but my friend no longer owns it, so I can't visit it. However, there is one almost like it next door on the hill and it is an Airbnb!
As a little girl, I would cuddle up under about 5-6 handmade quilts when I spent the night at my grandparent's farmhouse. As a bonus, her house was beside a creek...Oh, how I miss my grandparents...
My coziest places are places I can create in, or read. Sometimes I want to cuddle up with soft blankets and fluffy pillows with a warm drink; a spied apple cider, flavored coffee, or soothing tea, with maybe a homemade baked good; this time of year something apple, chocolate, or pumpkin based. I’ll snuggle up with a playlist to match my mood, and I’ll read or write. Right now I’m working on a spooky TBR, and working on a fantasy story. Or, sometimes I’ll pick a playlist to listen to as I draw or paint. My favorite places are in my basement with wood paneling that makes me feel like I’m in a cozy cottage, or up in our art room with 2 big windows that let in a ton of light.
I have a lovely big handmade chair that reminds me of the opening scene of The Friendly Giant... "And a chair for two to curl up in." It is low-slung and has comfy cushions. I sit by the fire with my dog and look at my lovely jade-colored fireplace and wall. Lots of plaids on all the chairs and the sofa. Lots of fun cushions with cats and giraffes and a medieval unicorn. It is so cozy and peaceful.
My house feels best after a day of cleaning and decluttering. I put on some soft music, light some candles, and start to paint/read, while the dogs are storing in the background. Doesn't get better then that.
What I've discovered in recent years is the ABSOLUTE MAGIC of fairy lights. Even if you live in a grotty flat overlooking a concrete multi-storey car park in the middle of a roundabout, if you strew fairy lights around your room you'll feel as if you're in Narnia - trust me, it works. I have tiny green 'bead' fairy lights around my large plants, warm white fairy lights around the coving in my kitchen, lounge and recently in my huge hallway and when it's dark it looks absolutely sensational and even if I'm feeling low, it always cheers me up. Voila!
I have lamented the trend of open concept and cold white kitchens, and grey flooring everywhere. I'm so glad to see that all coming to an end. I love cozy nooks, separate little rooms with their own interesting personalities even though they feel cohesive as well. I love dark wood, fireplaces, wood beams on ceilings that are not too high. Super comfortable couches and loveseats with soft pillows and blankets. Floor to ceiling bookshelves stocked with inspiring literature, from Children's board and picture books, to longer novels and classics. Bonus points for gorgeous binding. Intentional souvenirs, but not cluttered with too many. Candlelight. Subtle, sweet and spicy fragrance. A dog and/or a couple of cats with rugs for them to curl up on.
The coziest place for me was the town of Ferndale California, each building looked like it came straight from a storybook and the locals were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met
Great video. Love these ideas. My coziest place, would have to be most old summer cabins i've been too. Usually the walls are completely wooden. Wood floors and ceilings too. And wooden tables and benches. Small kitchens, not always running water or electricity. Real fireplaces. Old maps and trinkets from older generations. A deck of cards, some other board games, fishing supplies. These are pretty much staples of old cabins like these and i love it every time.
My coziest place is now my home thankfully. I always try to engage my senses with my decorating and I try to make sure that wherever I might be sitting, I can be comfy and also everything in my field of view is sort of like art. I put a lot of accent lighting around, including colorful uplights in certain corners, and that adds some color and also pools of cozy light. I also like to switch my window curtains to a warm color when it’s cozy season. I like to have candles around as well. Something about flickering candle light makes me feel happy. I also love to bring in warm metal colors, light gold, copper, brass etc.
Beautiful video ❤ when I think of a cozy place my mind instantly goes to The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery. This is so lovely. I moved recently, and I'm having the best time on Pinterest coming up with ideas for how to decorate and make this apartment in the city feel like a cozy cottage in the country.
My coziest place is me and my husband's place right now, it's the upstairs floor of a barn-shaped building so the ceilings are all barn-y and the doors are trapezoids to match the ceiling and walls. There are potted plants all over, bookshelves overflowing with books, cozy lamps and string lights, and usually incense burning. We have a beautiful view of oak trees all around, and one of our plants has vined itself up all the way to the ceiling! We have a wall full of art that we and our friends have done and it is very colorful. Definitely maximalist but in the sense that it evokes us to create.
I’m so glad I stumbled onto your channel this morning! You spoke right to my soul with every point of this video essay. My husband and I purchased our first home a year and a half ago and I have slowly been transforming it into our little hobbit hole with found treasures from thrift stores, and memories of us. Thank you for sharing! I’m sure I will refer back to this video as I keep “cozy-fying” our home 😊
Loved the exploration you had from fantasy going into reality. You're so right! Hi Olivia. This is my first time here. I am a bookworm. This was lovely. I love how you said that your home is a place to tell your story. What a fun way to look at it. I love that you read Marie Kondo's book as a teenager! It came out when I was in my 30s, and I read all her books, however, I have been a minimalist for 18 years since my early 20s (I am 41). I don't think Marie Kondo is minimalist at all (though I love her), as she helps more in organizing and encouraging Japanese aesthetic of owning less which can be on the line of minimalism. I am a colorful minimalist! I enjoyed learning what you said about it though. I also read House Rules a couple weeks ago! Love Brambly Hedge books!! You have great taste by the way. Great channel!
My mom raised us on the "useful and beautiful" quote, and as a result my childhood home was the coziest place I've been since. I just moved with my gf to the big city and am slowly making a cozy haven out of a tiny suburban apartment. It's bliss.

My husband and I purchased our first home a year and a half ago and I have slowly been transforming it into our little hobbit hole with found treasures from thrift stores, and memories of us.
Thank you for sharing! I’m sure I will refer back to this video as I keep “cozy-fying” our home 😊
Thank you so much, Lindsay! Best of luck on cozy-ifying your new home! 💛😊
It's so lovely to meet you, Victoria! 😊 💛 Thanks for stopping by!
I love finding art at thrift stores and garage sales.
Thank you for the video. Nicely done!
wow...what's old is new again.
My mom raised us on the "useful and beautiful" quote, and as a result my childhood home was the coziest place I've been since. I just moved with my gf to the big city and am slowly making a cozy haven out of a tiny suburban apartment. It's bliss.
This was beautifully done. I like your cozy style!
You Beautiful Keep Smiling..🤝🏻 Love From Pakistan 🥀💕🇵🇰
All the media examples are British which is interesting 🇬🇧
(Apart from Anne Gables music I think)
Minimalism is definitely not for me. I love to surround myself with the evidence of beautiful life
This was warm soup to my soul. ❤ thank you🦋
