      & that was makes this show so great, each one of them are imperfect representations of their stereotypes. Himmel is just some rando nobody who decided to become the person who defeats the Demon King just like how a hero can be anybody. Frieren is an an unorthodox as any mage as you can get along with her sheer audacity. Heiter was an alchoholic priest sure but he saved Fern's life by taking her in as family. & Eisen is the epitomy of the phrase "Courage is not the absence of fear but being in fear & acting regardless".

    I'm glad Stark didn't even try to get the sword. In addition to fitting the character better, since he doesn't think he's worthy, if he managed to get the sword it would destroy the message of Himmel's story that a hero doesn't need a magical item to say he's capable.

      (Or that the real evil and calamity of the world is yet to happen and Himmel's death was the triggering effect of what is to come and the remnants of the Hero's party is what might have a fighting chance to stop what is to come, Fern and Stark being the chosen kids to save all.)
      That's my crackhead theory

      @danreis2434 I'd personally love it if the sword comes back. I don't think it'd discount Himmel's journey because he literally succeeded. If the sword is legit, I think it'd emphasize it even more, since it'll be confirmed that the sword and the legend are real, but someone completely unrelated managed to save the world.

      Stark staring at the sword all by himself is up there as one of the few additions the anime staff made that I didn't like. None of this was in the manga, but after this episode everyone started believing in the theory that Stark is suddenly the chosen hero who's gonna pick up the sword in the future (even though Stark is a warrior, not a hero, and yes.. hero IS a class in Frieren. 勇者 - Yuusha, the hero is a character class in Dragon quest, y'all can search for it).

    Man I love the writing in this show. I love that the Hamburg steak part. Somehow they made Hamburg steak relate to FOUR different sets of characters and each of them telling a different story that shows you more about the characters. Eisen cooking for Himmel/Frieren/Heiter. Eisen cooking for Stark. Stoltz cooking for Stark and Frieren cooking for Stark. Each of them beautiful in their own rights.

      @Summer2shura ปีที่แล้ว +6

      the shot of the flashback of his brother indirectly telling him he is a warrior telling him to escape and transitioning from stoltz to stark almost looking like a passing of the torch is so beautiful

    • @boboyo3140
      @boboyo3140 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Maybe, but I think he thought of his brother because he also used to wield a sword. One thing that a lot of people seem to miss is the fact that "the hero" is a class in Frieren just like the mages, the warriors, the priests and such.. and there's TWO different ways to say "hero" in japanese which is kinda lost in translation... Eiyuu and Yuusha. The first one seems to be used for those who accomplished grand heroic deeds, the second one seems to be used for those who identify as heroes (the class). Stark's brother was a warrior (class), so there's this differance.

    • @Summer2shura
      @Summer2shura ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm yeah its plausible but let me correct myself. I actually think "pulling the sword" is just a concept of someone very heroic or having heroism in them. The conversation about Himmels story going into the aspects of heroism and being one without being linked or chosen makes me think that the reason stark thought of his brother while looking at the sword is because Stoltz is a hero to Stark by defending him and his home without second thoughts and in contrast Stark is someone who thinks he isn't capable of all that but can be seen showing signs of it. Which is why i think the scene where they fade into one another is so beautiful. Stark can be a real fake hero too, despite the warrior class just as Eisen said "everyone who works hard is a warrior" and imo anyone who shows bravery and compassion can be a hero.

    • @jspsand7085

    34:38 "I'm hella grateful" from "マジ感謝" (maji kansha) is casual way to express gratitude in Japanese. "マジ" (maji) is a colloquial term meaning "seriously" or "for real," and "感謝" (kansha) means "gratitude." So, "マジ感謝" conveys a sense of sincere and genuine appreciation in a casual manner.

    Himmel didn't need to be the chosen one to be a hero, he didn't need a Deus Ex Machina to defeat the Demon King, and he didn't need a magical destiny to be a good person. All he ever needed was a desire to help others and some good friends. I think that's all any of us really need to be real heroes. Even if none of us do anything as grand as bringing "peace to the realm," every single one of us can be someone else's hero and change their life for the better in even the smallest acts of kindness. You don't need to be someone special to be special to someone.

  • @Dark__Thoughts
    @Dark__Thoughts 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    7:50 That trust in her kids. She didn't even flinch. :)
    9:10 And the sword is likely the same, since the show loves to play with parallels so much. It's a relic of a forgotten era, now nothing more but a rusty old sword that's stuck in a stone, but people fabricated this romanticized legend around it.
    10:45 And the first episode, after Himmel's funeral.
    27:37 Misdirection? You don't want to spoil things with what you show in the openings so you put them in scenes that are not part of the show. Otherwise we'd see a desert in the show and immediately think this is when this character should appear.
    This episode with Stark's backstory is such a backstabbing emotional surprise hit though. I did not expected it to be this tragic and sad, which hurts even more since by now you know how pure of a character he is as well. Being this hard on himself for "abandoning" his village and seeing himself as a failure, even though he was just a little baby. Or thinking he never received any birthday presents to realizing that Stoltz (which should've been Stolz) and Eisen actually did gift him something. I also love how it is not just Frieren who has those retrospective realizations. I love his character, which is rare because most male characters I just can't relate to at all but he is, just like Frieren as well, such an endearing character.
    Btw, German "St" is pronounced with the German "Sch" which is close to the English "Sh".

Also i may be wrong especially since I'v only watched up to this point but i think when they asked why they didn't just ask adventurers to kill the monsters and they said it was because Himmel was the hero might be because I imagine the Sword in the Stone attracted many adventurers to the village before but since most people think Himmel actually already pulled it from the stone adventurers probably see no point in traveling there anymore, especially since the village is in such a remote and dangerous location. So they haven't asked any adventurers because there's no adventurers to ask.

    As I understand it Äußerst is pronounced something like Oysserst.
    ß is not a B, it's a sharp s; it helps if you think about it as a ligature of ſs, ſ being the old long s that used to be placed at the start of words or as the first of an ss pair; ss → ſs → ß.
    Unlike B, the ß in Äußerst isn't even a capital letter; the capital form ẞ wasn't officially adopted (and as a variant at that) until 2017, though it'd been in unicode since 2008.

    Fake hero or not, none of Himmel's companions decided to stop following him. Even without the sword, they still think he can succeed. They have faith in him, not the sword.
    For me, this episode serves two purposes in explaining the show to the audience :
    - first : what is a true "hero" ? Someone prophetized so - or someone who acts like one ? This a theme that will come back again and again in the future, though in often less obvious ways.
    - Second : people believe what they're told, not the facts they can see. Himmel defeated the demon king while wearing a fake sword. But if it was known, people would think less of him - because he did not pull the sword, rather than be amazed that he won even without it. The "pulling the sword" incident is more important than Himmel's actions. The idea that "people" judge others not on their actions, but on what they've been told, or other assumptions, is central to the way the show is told. Demons use words to incite their victims to make wrong assumptions about them. Frieren does the same with mana - and hiding her history. And the show does it with nearly everything... Stoltz is introduced by his father as a proud warrior who would treat Stark badly. But the truth - that he hides from the village - is different.
    Very small spoiler for season 2 (or 3 ?) : not only is the sword a replica - it was a decorative sword meant to be put on a wall, and not to be used in any kind of fight. And it is the only sword Himmel ever used... What a man.
    I have always wondered if Frieren's "duty" may have preceded Himmel's trip to the village... What if she had been here before, killing monsters every fifty years ? I have nothing to prove or disprove it though. Just the feeling that it seems the village is used to her visits.
    Also : the prophecy is that the sword will help to save the world. Maybe defeating the demon King was not the "save the world" moment the sword is meant for... it is meant to be a tool, not a way to evaluate the worthiness of someone. But humans always want to evaluate and compare people - like demons with their mana.
    Stark didn't remember his birthday. Same thing for Fern in episode 3. The person who remembers birthdays is Frieren. She also remembers her "appointments": the village of the sword, Qual, the meteor shower... She may be an elf, but she is very aware of the passage of time. and of how important an occasion a birthday is. And that they are opportunity to make people happy and emotional, something we learned in episode 3 is important to her.
    Frieren wanted to gift Stark a potion that dissolves clothing - a potion that exposes what people don't want to show, in a way. She ends up explaining to him the true meaning of the steak - "exposing" the true feelings of Eisen and Stoltz. The "naked truth".
    I think "clothes" are, in the symbolic language of the show, a metaphor for "lies" or "masks". Frieren collects ways to see beyond appearances.
    Fern is a teenager. She lived most of her life with people who were both a lot older than her, and a lot less "responsible". She is now travelling with a boy her age, and has no idea how to deal with the fact that her feelings are very aware he is a male... So she defends herself against the perv ideas she may have in the back or her mind (and rejects) by being very suspicious of Stark. But she is the one who looked at Stark's naked body - and who used the cloth dissolving potion on another person.
    Great reaction as always, thanks !

    The Lady of the Lake is the sword's gatekeeper in Arthurian legend. We know Frieren is an unlicensed mage bc she's too long-lived for convention. Frieren is like Himmel's Lady of the Lake and Merlin combined. There would have been an arc we don't see of Himmel coming to grips with failure to pull the sword. Himmel is not a Christ figure, he wasn't idealized, he was vain, filled with ambition, and would have needed the same guidance that Stark got to come to the conclusion that you DON'T need gatekeepers to allow you to do Good. And to measure yourself internally rather than externally - symbolized by Stoltz kneeling in the mud and getting dirty. This is very mature writing.

    This is just my insight about the sword being protected. Is that the sword isn't just being protected from monsters but also, the sword along with its truth, being protected from adventurers and people outside the village and that's where frieren comes in, her task of exterminating the monsters every half a century so that they wouldn't need to hire adventurers or having adventurers coming to the village to help exterminating monsters that is surrounding the sword, all to keep the truth and HIMmel's honor be preserved. This might be obvious to some but I just like the thought of it that I wanna tell it to y'all😊.
    (Sorry for my grammar, I know that it's all over the place😅)

    You may have already figured this out by now. The "ß" character is not a "b". It's known as an Esszet, and is basically a substitute for "ss" in certain words. It's not generally used anymore, but you'll still come across it.
    The diphthong Äu is pronounced like "oy"as in "oyster". So the name Äußerst sounds like "oy-sairst", without a rhotic "r" in the second syllable.

      "ß" is pretty much the only thing I know about German and it's still kind of funny to hear people read it as a b. I actually thought it was a B when I saw it on the map but realised it was a ß when I saw it in the subtitles because the font was clearer.

    The heros sword, it might have already been pulled and used in the past, or the calamity that needs the sword have not yet appered, since the demon king was around for so long, so it was most likely not a world ending calamity like the sword is meant to be used ageinst.

    I don't know a lot about the nuances of the Japanese language, but does the fact that Stark calls Stoltz "anniki" instead of "onii-san" say anything about their relatedness? Or are the two terms interchangeable?

    • @ahmao_su
      @ahmao_su ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry, I am not good at English. Aniki (兄貴/アニキ) is an honorific term, It is not every situation use this word. typically, is reserved for addressing someone you respect, who is also elder than you.
      Onii-san is Informal word, can be used in many situations, the use of "onii-san" and "onee-san" to refer to others who are slightly older than them is a part of the language and culture. These terms are used to show respect and politeness towards older individuals, and they are commonly used to address not only siblings but also older friends, acquaintances, or even strangers in certain contexts.

      Hello😊
      I am Japanese.I'm sorry for my bad English.
      ”onii-san(お兄さん)”、”onii-chan(お兄ちゃん)”、and ”a-ni-ki(兄貴)” generally refer to an older brother.
      "onii-san" is a more polite expression than "a-ni-ki". This is the spoken language of everyday conversation.
      “onii-san” and “onii-chan” are words that are not rude when used towards anyone, from children to the elderly.
      This is because it is a familiar word used in every household.
      On the other hand, "a-ni-ki" (兄貴) can also be used when there is a master-servant relationship or an absolute hierarchical relationship. Therefore, it is not a word that can be used against anyone.
      Stark and Stoltz are purely blood brothers, so "a-ni-ki" is used interchangeably with "onii-san".

    How come you dont think of the most obvious sentiment of the episode?
    "a real hero" - what is a real hero? Does some legendary sword make you the hero? Or shouldbit be wise-versa person who becomes a hero makes his every (even a replica) sword "a hero's sword"? Does pulling some piece of metal out of a rock make you a hero, or is it how you act (help with the carrage, play with children, helping villagers, cprotecting them against a dragon etc.) like Stark in the second half of the episode. Usually both halfs of Frieren's episodes have a connecting sub plot, but no reactors pick up on that
