Stark was saying he probably never got any presents from his family because they never really cared much for him, that feeding into his relationship with Eisen. The episode is largely about self-worth and showing appreciation/affection to your loved ones, items representing them being the Hero's Sword and the hamburg steaks.
Both are things Stark feels like he's never really had or been given in his life. Frieren explaining the significance of making someone a large hamburg steak to him (as well as telling him about Eisen also being afraid all the time before Stark's fight with the dragon) & Fern continuing to express confidence in him and encouragement as his peer is helping him find his own self-worth and realize he's had loved ones who've cared about him all this time.

Sheesh what a great episode! This show really knows how to hit the feels T_T I also like the two versions of a Hero shown in here. The mythical hero in Himmel who in reality is not as "perfect" as in the stories that the people like to tell and the Unsung hero in Mr. Starks brother who will probably only be remembered by him.

There are so many wonderful messages in this series and they are consistently delivered in heartfelt and memorable ways. They never miss. Like the moment that Stark realised there were people who would give him a gift for his birthday. And Eisen’s belief that anyone who works hard towards something is a warrior.

I just want to shout out the beautiful score the orchestra has been weaving so masterfully in and out throughout this whole series, cueing us and informing us of the emotion and impact of each of this anime's scenes. For me, the swelling of the heroic overtures from the orchestra's horn section for when Starks older brother faces away from the audience to face the monster threatening his village and brother hit like a freight train, informing us of how noble, brave, and honourable Stoltz was in that moment (and how Stark remembered him as he ran from his brother's reliable and strong back). The scenes from earlier of Stoltz and Stark showed us Stoltz was noble and kind (like a hero should be), but the music made me FEEL it.
Also the music from the scene where Stark finally takes a bite out of the hamburger accompanied by the melancholic framing of Stark's half hidden face, all to crystallize such poignant moment: remembering his brother's love for him through the symbolism of Eisen's warrior hamburger, and perhaps unknowningly being given this gift (made greater by the aforementioned layers of meaning) by a thoughtful Frieren... Few scenes in any media convey so much emotion, implication, and satisfaction like that scene did for me.
    I love this anime.

Stark did get presents from Eisen and his brother, but it's the not the traditional presents that kids expect growing up. Eisen is bad in verbal communication. Frieren mentioned that Eisen had a custom of cooking large hamburg steaks for anyone including hero party members on their birthdays. These 'gifts' were his way of acknowledging them as warriors, which he defined as anyone who worked hard and do not necessarily need to be from the warrior class. In the current day scene, Stark was short on words when he realized that he was wrong about never getting any praises and presents from his mentor and pretty much adopted father. When the flashback went to the brother cooking steaks, Stark probably started thinking about how his brother regularly gave him birthday presents too.
The next thought might be a stretch. When the brother said "don't tell the rest of the family," I thought "don't tell dad." Stark's biological father was a big SOB who definitely didn't have any praise for Stark and said something bad about Stark working hard and getting no where as a warrior class. If the bad father had found out about the cooking, I can see him talking out loud to the brother asking "why are you wasting good food on a failure?" on Stark's birthday. The brother did the correct thing by keeping it a secret.

The chances of Stoltz being alive is slim considering the Demon they were facing was implied to be a Greater Demon and probably as strong as Qual was. But who knows maybe the author will throw a 180 and make him turn up alive further down the story.

Stark would never entertain the idea of pulling the heros sword from the rock. he doesn't see himself as courageous, strong and valorous like Himmel and his brother.

Theres also different classes established in this anime just like your typical old 2d rpg games, most similar to this is dragon quest
Himmel is in the hero class
      Eisen and Stark are warriors
      Then you got your mage
Your monk who does bare hand combat
      Priest who does healing, etc
So i dont think Stark would be the 'class' to pull the stone

This series does character bonds and relationships so damn well, Stark’s bonds with Fern, Frieren and Eisen have been major highlight for me, along with the other characters. Seeing Fern and Frieren, along with his master and brother celebrate and do nice things for Stark during his B-Day, gave me the fuzzies. I got a little during the flashback of Stark and brother as well. This series is just so good.

I really felt Stark in this one. Growing up, I/we usually didn't get much, if anything, for our birthdays and I thought it was just because we were poor. Later on in life, the trend didn't change much and, often, when I did get something it was something incredibly generic like socks and stuff. I was never excited for my birthday, but it was such a normal thing for me that I never focused on it too much - I knew I was outside of the norm and I recognized what normal people did so, when it came to *giving* gifts, I always did my best and I usually tried to make it personal. It wasn't until a few years ago, though, that a strangely attentive and kind woman decided to get me or make me gifts for my birthday that I finally understood what it was like to be on the receiving end. Poor Stark. I've long been at the point where it is awkward and unwanted to even get gifts - unless they're from her, they're not going to be special and nothing I want or need.

My current theory is that the Hero's Sword will never be pulled from the stone, because the person it is waiting for is already dead. That being Stoltz, thats why Start flashed to his brother when looking at the sword.. A very big theme of this series is Memory. Stark suppressed his memories, perhaps through trauma, thats why he slowly remembered that he didn't run away, he was sent away by his brother. Kraft saying there is no one who remembers his deeds. Frieren going around learning spells to clean statues to make sure they remember her friends. Frieren said she never learned anything about Himmel, but as the journey goes, she is learning that in fact she Does know a lot about him. Her perception of lifespans and time just make her not realize it.

Stark's Clan was all about perfection and strength and viewed having any caring loving actions just like gift giving as not just Weakness but as a punishable offense that is why Stark's Brother said don't tell anyone.... if anything, Starks Clan/Tribe has the same kind of mind set as Spartans.

There will always come a time when a chapter of one's life must come to an end. It may be hard to move forward. And It may be scary to start a new chapter. But everyone's chapters are limited by the short lifespan of a human, and the unforgiving, everflowing time we are bound by. So we must cherish each day as a new page in our chapters in hopes that there may be more pages waiting to be discovered. *Papers are thin* . Cherish each page, and you may find hidden papers telling you that your chapter isn't as short as you think it is. Cherish each page, and you may find hidden papers full of unforgettable wonders you never would have found otherwise.

I'm glad someone else had a similar theory. My theory is that Himmel actually died in the battle against the Demon King, and Frieren used magic to make a copy of him so that the townspeople would remember him and to keep hope alive, like the guy that hired Stark to play his son. Only Eisen and Heiter know this which is why they didn't cry at his "funeral".
