This stories take place about 4000 years before Episode IV. Some of the characters do appear in the games, but the games is a completely different beast from this. And the Vector storyline does not end in Dark Times. It has issues from Rebellion and it ends in Legacy. It's a 12 issue arc, and you don't really need to read it in one go. It depends if you're interested in following Celeste's tale or going chronological.
LEGENDS is my Star Wars…I read all the paperbacks junior high/high school starting with Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn…the Disney Version of Star Wars really soured my fandom. So glad this content is coming out, got mine pre ordered!
As others have mentioned, this series actually takes place roughly 4,000 years before the SW films (around 30 years after the classic Dark Horse _Tales of the Jedi_ series), but despite the seeming "Legends"-label, a huge chunk of these characters, stories, and era have since gotten recanonized by Disney, including the Mandalorian Wars, Revan, Malak, etc., and Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed that a KOTOR live-action feature film is in development at Lucasfilm. So read away in confidence -- these stories still stand tall as pretty much the "definitive" account of this time-period in galactic history, and right now Disney is focused almost entirely upon the time period of the movies themselves, with _The High Republic_ being their very first "baby-step" outside of those boundaries. Which means that they're not gonna be contradicting any of those tales anytime soon, here.
Do you have / planning on doing a Star Wars Omnibus reading order? I understand what you said about this volume. I saw your other videos on some reprints coming out and I think it would be great to see how the omnibuses all tie in.
I am truly excited with this release. What a beautiful book, absolutely LOVED that spine. Hope Marvel releases all the LEGENDS SW expanded universe epics in omnibus format . The Force is truly strong with those stories 😎✌️
This is what i'd call essential reading for expanded universe. The references to the game are slight (a cameo or 2) and it's a prequel to the games so you dont have to have played the games to understand whats going on. And if you like the comic, which you will, it's a great primer for the games. Volume 4 of the Epic Collection collects the comics that are set after KOTOR 1&2 and are prequels leading right into the MMO RPG. This means they're set 300 years after the omnibus comics (first 3 epic volumes). It makes sense to separate them.
I have the Original Omnibus 3 book series, they blew my mind as a kid I read them over and over! Would love if marvel was rereleasing these old books. They actually dont involve the video game at all.
Also, as you touch upon, re: _The Old Republic_ Epic Vol. 4, those particular stories are set something like 320 years *AFTER* the events of KOTOR, centering around the _Star Wars: The Old Republic_ MMORPG, which is basically like the next ten sequels to KOTOR and KOTOR II, all packed into one game (developed by BioWare, who created the first KOTOR). ;) The eventual _The Old Republic_ Epic Vol. 5 will wrap up the pre-_High Republic_ centuries and millennia, culminating with stories set around 1,000 years before the movies (when Darth Bane lived), and showing what is seemingly the "final" destruction of the Sith.
Dammit Omar, I don’t have any Star Wars books, and wasn’t planning on getting any but the way you describe these books makes them so appealing. 😭 And it feels detached enough from the main material to make it worth a read for someone who’s not that into Star Wars!
Ooo, damn. This brings my love for SW back. Story seems really good. Old Republic is the best thing they have ever produced in games and now in comic books (?)
I think this is 4000 years BBY. 1000 BBY are the Darth Bane novels. I don’t think Zayne appears in the game (other than a small easter egg). Thanks for the review, so tempted to get this now. Damn. Wasn’t on my list but I think you got me again.
This is honestly Star Wars Golden Era, almost everything that makes Star Wars "Star Wars", is better in the "Old Republic" or "High Republic" Era. And I'm a fan that actually owns, has read, and is currently reading the books as well as a lot of the graphic novels. I decided to start over and go back to the beginning, all the way back to 'Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void', the very first book in the timeline chronologically, and I literally just finished 'Han Solo: Rebel Dawn' last night, and I already read 'The Lando Calrissian Adventures' in between the Han Solo books for the timelines sake, so I FINALLY get to read 'The Force Unleashed. Sorry I'm rambling, but yeah there's more Star Wars material than a person can read in one lifetime, so you kinda have to pick and choose where you decide to pick it up, unless you go as hard as a lifer like myself of course. Love this video, and I LOVE Star Wars material, so keep pumping em out.
Kotor 1 & 2 were the best games so many choices and multiple play through paths the characters in the game are awesome aswell and the whole story in #1 with lord Revan and Malik so well done first playthrough the twist blows your mind
Im reading this for the first time on MU, to see if the Omni is something im interested in. Enjoying the story, though i kinda feel the art leaves something to be desired. Might wait to see if it goes on sale some time.
I pre-ordered/paid for it from amazon and it is finally arriving tomorrow. Kind of wish they had included Dawnof the Jedi so you have all of the old republic but this is going to be a nice beast to have with by other omnibuses. They need to to Legacy era now I pre-ordered the other ones they are doing but if they could do one of the more interesting era's it would be nice.. alo need to include when Moore and others did it early on.
That "Volume 1" on the omni makes me hopeful that we'll get at least one more OR omni. I also hope we get an omni of the Legacy comics too, that way my Legends comics are bookend by omnis. 😎👍
Technically, we'll probably be getting one more "The Old Republic" Omnibus (Vol. 2), but all of the KOTOR comic-stories ever produced are already in this volume, and Vol. 2 will be covering comic stories set during the _Star Wars: The Old Republic_ MMORPG, as well as tales set during the final war against the Sith (involving Darth Bane) around 1,000 years prior to the films.
@@joshehrnwald8677 Not to be that guy, but technically these are called Old Republic omnibus not KOTOR omnibus. But yeah, I hope we do get a volume two!
Agreed with your recommendations. For almost their entire tenure with the license, Dark Horse rarely missed with Star Wars. Almost everything after Dark Empire was a universal banger
Omar, Thanks for the review. Did you mention Star Wars The Empire omnibus is coming in 2022? Did you do a breaking news video on it? I can't find it. Thanks
KOTOR 1 game was soooo great back in the day!!! SO GREAT!! game mechanics and graphics aside the story still is great but as far as i know the comics are not really related to the first game. i havent read the comics but have wanted to but epics were htf but no time like the omni release to get into it...but original KOTOR was so good...i would say check it out but a game from 2003 might not hold up to the epicness in my mind. one of the best things about the old republic era is it can keep so much of the starwars lore but change almost everything you want without interfering with the Lucas stories...i think thats why the made it so far in the past...its like if they made an xmen story in roman times...its so long ago it cant really effect the modern story but still have all the mutant stuff
Had to return my damaged copy and wait a month for the new one so I’m late. But holy cow was it worth the wait. This may be the best licensed book I’ve ever read. I need KOTOR for PSN NOW!!
Thinking of picking this up as someone who has no knowledge of KOTOR. Curious for those who read this series, was there a proper conclusion to the storyline?
Absolutely getting this one. Hope they do a volume 2, but wondering what the contents would be. A volume 2 would likely contain the content of the recent Old Republic epic (MMO tie-in comics and Lost Tribe of the Sith), plus Knight Errant and possibly Jedi vs. Sith. We also need a Tales of the Jedi omnibus to precede this one (that should include Dawn of the Jedi miniseries, otherwise I don't know if those issues would get put in an oversized book).
There’s gonna be at least one more epic collecting Knight Errant #1-15 and Jedi vs Sith #1-6, plus whatever Tales short stories fit in that time period. Those two will be enough for another omni, which won’t be anywhere near as large as this one.
I gotta be honest, I'm mainly just interested in the Aaron/Gillen SW stuff. I dunno why, I guess just because I associate this stuff with the Prequels. (Yes, I know it's set long before the Prequels.) 😂
There are more stories set in the same time period. This covers epic collections 1-3 (bar a short story). Will be 5 epics set in this time period. So one more omni
This omni tells one stand-alone story. The second omni will collect other comics set hundreds/thousands of years after the events of this omnibus, but still 1000+ years before the movies.
Everyone who loves star wars should read as much dark horse content as it so much better than the current stuff. There is so many good stories that are being missed if you don't and I'm glad they are reprinting them. Even though they are mostly doing for the money
Omar, when do you think we'll be able to see a Star Wars vol 1 reprint from the original run? Not the Jason Aaron stuff. It has been out of print for years.
@@NearMintCondition been waiting to buy the first one before getting the other volumes. If you could put in a word to the folks at marvel you'd be my hero!
Excellent overview and thanks, Omar. I have pre-ordered it and I have the epic collections too. Looks like the spine is following the epic collection style, which has pretty much the same yellow theme (with yellow tinged image at the bottom). The spine colour theme is different for every Star Wars era in the epic line. So, I won't be surprised if the 'Rise of the Sith' omnibus has a dark red themed spine. This is set before the events of the video games and there is reference to the formative years of one of the main characters of the video game, which was great when it's finally revealed though brief. If you're interested in the original Mandalorian War referenced here, you should check out the Dark Horse's Tales of the Jedi run (Tales of the Jedi, Freedon Nadd Uprising, Lords Of The Sith, The Sith War and Redemption), which is fantastic. Eagerly waiting for you to make the Marvel omnibus announcement of this series... haha
Anyone know why the next solicitation for an omnibus after the rise of the sith omnibus is an Empire omnibus and not the Clone Wars material? I figured they would release the stuff chronologically.
Man, my wallet can’t keep up with how many Omnis I want. Just got Vol. 1 of Geoff Johns run on Green Lantern and can already tell i’m gonna need Vol. 2 & 3. Still debating on whether I wanna get Blackest Night as well. This looks like a definite Pre-order to me too.
Most of Blackest Night is in the John's Omni Vol 3. Getting both would be alot of double dipping. If you have to choose skip Blackest Night Omni in favour of John's Vol 3.
Chronologically the Rise of the Sith omni coming out in September follows this, but the stories aren’t really related as they’re several thousand years apart. The Knights of the Old Republic stories are so disconnected from the events of the movies that you don’t need to worry about these issues being required reading for anything else.
@@Marco-hd8kd Gotcha, I wasn't really too interested in those 2 so I am glad to hear they arent necessary. Maybe in the future if they are still in print I will get them but for now I have other books that take priority. Thanks
Very loosely based on the Knights of the Old Republic games (1 and 2). I say loosely because the majority of the characters and events are original to this comic.
Old Rep epic 1 is the only epic I couldn’t get so glad they brought this out! Bit of a shame they missed a single Tales short story from epic 3 so this isn’t a complete replacement for Epics 1-3
Basically, _The Rise of the Sith_ Omnibus will collect SW stories that fall immediately (within 10-15 years) prior to the Prequel Trilogy, showing things like how Darth Sidious/Palpatine engineered the invasion of Naboo, etc. (It will also include the actual Dark Horse-adaptation of _The Phantom Menace_ from 1999 near the very end of the book, as well as all of the surrounding side-stories.) In _The Old Republic_ Omnibus, the stories are set around 4,000 years prior to the movies, in a very different historical era, when the Sith number in the thousands (and operate completely out in the open), and are the ancestors of Darth Sidious's order seen in the movies. Also, these comics directly connect to Dark Horse's previous _Tales of the Jedi_ series (being set around 30 years afterward), and those comics serve as excellent backstory for the KOTOR stories seen here.
Can someone send me a link where I can purchase the Weaver cover online? (The cover in the video) I absolutely can not find it and I'm really stressing out about it now
It is the full story of Zayne in this omnibus! I have all the Star Wars Legends in french hardcovers, this run collected in this Omnibus i have it in 9 hardcover volumes(in french).
I have absolutely no star wars books. For my 1st purchase I'm thinking this or Dr aphra but I'm not sure. Since I have nothing I'm just going to go balls deep but don't know where to start. Any help would be awesome guys Cheers
I'm not a huge Star Wars fan but I bought Dr Aphra to see what it would be like, and so far I've absolutely enjoyed what I have read. It seems to get better and better the more it goes on, was thinking about buying this one too but the art style seems to different and is putting me off.
Well I didn’t order this but TOW sent me a copy today. 🤷♂️ Anybody else having all kinds of wacky stuff happening with TOW lately? They sent a book I ordered to someone else last week luckily the fella who received it forwarded it to me. (No packing slip in this Star Wars book tho)
I have the Jason Aaron and Dr Aphra omnibuses and will get the two Darth Vader omnibuses. Is this a worthy addition? Has the series concluded? If so would it be only two volumes assuming a second volume gets solicited? How does the upcoming Star Wars Legends Revenge of the Sith fit in with the above omnibuses?
The that include the characters from the original trilogy are usually the least favorite story lines in the comics amongst star wars fans it's one of does things were if luke or solo are on the cover they role there eyes LOL once you read something like old republic you start to see why . You can only do so mush with the main characters since there story has already been told in the movies
Oh Omar you've done me again. This looks pretty amazing (art looks very European, or is that just me?). This Omni is dauntingly expensive on Amazon UK at the moment though. Well there goes my wallet again... And it's Volume One? There's a volume Two? Oh my wallet.

The Knights of the Old Republic stories are so disconnected from the events of the movies that you don’t need to worry about these issues being required reading for anything else.
@@Marco-hd8kd Are you able to tell me a little about the Sith Omnibus, as it seems like a lot of short stories from the listing?
@@Marco-hd8kd Gotcha, I wasn't really too interested in those 2 so I am glad to hear they arent necessary. Maybe in the future if they are still in print I will get them but for now I have other books that take priority. Thanks
Can’t wait for this one
I have the epics. Do I get this????
What games is this based on? Great video ty as always
I better see the Trades going for cheap now. Lol after I bought the entire epics collection
Can someone explain to me where 'Star Wars Legends: Rise Of The Sith Omnibus' fits into this?
Basically, _The Rise of the Sith_ Omnibus will collect SW stories that fall immediately (within 10-15 years) prior to the Prequel Trilogy, showing things like how Darth Sidious/Palpatine engineered the invasion of Naboo, etc. (It will also include the actual Dark Horse-adaptation of _The Phantom Menace_ from 1999 near the very end of the book, as well as all of the surrounding side-stories.)
In _The Old Republic_ Omnibus, the stories are set around 4,000 years prior to the movies, in a very different historical era, when the Sith number in the thousands (and operate completely out in the open), and are the ancestors of Darth Sidious's order seen in the movies. Also, these comics directly connect to Dark Horse's previous _Tales of the Jedi_ series (being set around 30 years afterward), and those comics serve as excellent backstory for the KOTOR stories seen here.
Can someone send me a link where I can purchase the Weaver cover online? (The cover in the video)
I absolutely can not find it and I'm really stressing out about it now
Where are you based?
@@barryponsford2433 Bay Area California / Northwest Iowa
@@curzon9619 sorry I'm on the wrong side of the water ;-)
I wish Geoff Johns could take on the monumental task of building the Mass Effect universe. There's so much lore there.
Hi where can I get this rare cover varaint?
Try CGN, they may have a few or Dying Breed Collectors.
Is this the full story of Zayne? From beginning to end?
Unless there are some in the New Republic.
It is the full story of Zayne in this omnibus! I have all the Star Wars Legends in french hardcovers, this run collected in this Omnibus i have it in 9 hardcover volumes(in french).
Luke Skywalker blew up the death star ??? Thanks for the spoiler warning Omar !
Better not tell you about his sister!
GREAT VIDEO!🤙🏿🤙🏿🤙🏿🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Is it just me or do the links look a bit dark on the early pages you flipped threw .
Seems to be OOP rip
Can you please do a super man reading orders
Is this the only old republic era omnibus
It is.
@@NearMintCondition that’s a damn shame
I have absolutely no star wars books. For my 1st purchase I'm thinking this or Dr aphra but I'm not sure.
Since I have nothing I'm just going to go balls deep but don't know where to start. Any help would be awesome guys
Cheers
I'm not a huge Star Wars fan but I bought Dr Aphra to see what it would be like, and so far I've absolutely enjoyed what I have read. It seems to get better and better the more it goes on, was thinking about buying this one too but the art style seems to different and is putting me off.
@@robertparker3489 well I went for it. I got this Omni, doctor aphra on your recommendation and Darth Vader soule Omni 👌
@@psi-judgesanderson6983 have you had a chance to read doctor Aphra yet ? I finished it a few weeks ago, and it's staying in my collection.
@@robertparker3489 not yet but I'll hopefully be getting around to it soon. Cheers 👍
Wish this was canon.
Canon is all in the mind. If you like just call this canon and Disney stuff non-canon :-)
@@MattBloggs yeah I’m aware, but I still wish Disney didn’t de-canonize it.
Reject Disney, embrace Legends.
How do you live with how much omnibuses cost
How do I make a living? Or how do I afford it?
@@NearMintCondition I meant how do make a overview but have no problem to how much your paying no hate.Just asking
i want this
It’s so good.
Nice video :)
Oh Omar you've done me again. This looks pretty amazing (art looks very European, or is that just me?). This Omni is dauntingly expensive on Amazon UK at the moment though. Well there goes my wallet again... And it's Volume One? There's a volume Two? Oh my wallet.
