Nice stone cold shot. Good hunting
Thank you!
dude. your game is getting continually better.
Amazing shot!
Thanks bro!
Dr Kevin never disappoint! This 🔥 video! Full of information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to us.
Thanks Jun! Let's go spearfish soon!
I just made fish tacos with a simple batter and a nice cabbage slaw a few days ago from a striped bass I caught. Everyone liked it. Digging your videos 👍
Sounds great!
That’s so sick!!
This is amazing! Never thought of spearfishing a river. Seems like the perfect place for beginners.
Thanks! It can be although the rivers have a number of hazards to be aware of similar to the open ocean and no boat traffic on a river will be looking for a diver so dive flags are essential!
There it is folks another Fantastic video ! Full of useful information and mouth watering meals. Say hello to Diane, love how she always makes a presence in your videos. 💕🌟👍
Hey Kev, glad to see other people spearfishing and freediving the freshwater bodies. I’ll look out for you next season.
Right on! That was a very fun environment to hunt!
Fantastic!
I grow fabulous heirloom (many rare) tomatoes. I've been collecting seeds for 30 years. Last year I was able to successfully propagate seed that was 20 years old & it produced very large impossibly orange beefsteak-like fruit - so tasty! There's nothing better than fresh basil and fresh tomatoes straight from the garden.
That striper was awesome!
We don't see them this far north in Oregon but they are present in the Southern Oregon Coastal waters.
It's Coho season and I'm hoping to add some more salmon to my freezer. I'm headed back to the coast to get some Dungeness (our season is year 'round here) in the next few weeks.
How is the higher water temperature treating you down there?
We're seeing a spike in domoic acid a little to the south where they had to close Mussel harvesting & I'm guessing razor clamming season won't reopen on October 1st because of it.
Thanks for the amazing content! I look forward to each one.
Those tomatoes sound awesome! You are lucky to be able to go for Coho and to be able to crab year-round. I might have to make a southern OR dive trip some time for crab in the off season! It has been strange with warm waters spreading sea star wasting disease and yes, spikes in Domoic acid and PSP toxins here and there. The days of simply relying on colder months for shellfish are over. I would not even harvest mussels in Dec. without calling the CA Biotoxin Info Hotline first to confirm if shellfish are safe these days. Happy hunting and thanks for watching!
This is an impressive meal!
i'd love to see you diving and listing out all the things that live in an area, another great video!
I will try to do more of that in coming videos. I did a bit of it in one of my last SoCal dive vids.
What a wonderful video kevin, I still can't believe ur not getting way more views. Keep it up!
Thanks buddy!
Striper...yummmm
I live for this series can't wait to get into that water one day
Stoked to hear that!
Nice shot!
Damn I missed the Channel Islands trip!
Hope to catch the next trip you have!
Great video man!
Thanks!
Great Video man !!
Thanks bro!
Extremely intriguing video . I have lots of hours of free diving pico island in the azores but I've never tried the rivers only line and hook . I think I may just give it a shot . Thank you for the amazing content
The Azores sound like such a cool area! I have always wanted to go!
Really enjoy All the quotes in the beginning of the videos
Thanks! Glad to hear it!
I always wondered about free diving and spearfishing in fresh water. Thanks for sharing this video!! Will be checking out your link for the channel islands! 🤿👌🤙
Right on. Freshwater is a great time. The Channel Islands are like diving the SoCal mainland 100 years ago. It is a very special place!
Man, that's a nice shot! No damaged filets :)
Thanks! Sometimes the shot just lands exactly where you want!
Dr. Kev! First time caller long time listener here, dude great video man, I fish for striper in the Delta, just outside of Lodi, Lower Mokelumne area. Really cool to see that perspective from underwater. I usually go Baja fish taco if I keep them but usually throw them back. I'm guessing that that was Beefsteak tomato on the caprese? Looked good. My garden tomatoes (cherry reds) were lack luster this year. Anywho Thanks for the awesome content, great so see fellow California stuff here on the Tube! Have a great day. looking forward to your next video. have a great day. 🌲🏕
That was a beefsteak tomato. It has been a strange tomato year for lots of folks but you know it just goes like that sometimes. Have fun hitting those Lodi striped bass! Good carp bowfishing opportunities down that way too!
My first time fishing i was alone and hooked onto something huge. I didnt know how to set the the drag on my pole yet so i was pulling me into the water and im a big guy. I got it to close to shore and seen its huge eyeballs and very fine stripes on its side. My line snapped andmy buddies still think im lying to this day. Ill never forget my fight with the giant striper
nice!!
Man that is quite the spread .... I'll be trying this with British seabass after my next lure fishing trip
Right on! You will not be disappointed!
So delicious
I truly appreciate your cerebral/sustainable approach to fishing and food in general. I first saw you on Fisherman's Life and just had to check out your channel. The idea of actually being able to forage a whole meal from a seascape is just so beautiful and hunter gatherer. Have you completed your doctorate work? Would like to read what you've written.
Thank you! Yes, I am a doctor now. My dissertation focused on Characterizing the Island Paleocoastal Tradition on the California Channel Islands and other related aquatic adaptations. I believe it is still under embargo, but that will likely be lifted soon. Thanks for watching!
I’m going to get into this. I just got a small volume mask in the mail today. To bad the season ends in a couple days. I’ll be diving in the sac near chico.
If can get in the water can scout area for when season does open up again ... that and it is fun.
I think I need a freediving class first, and the rest of the gear. The river is very cold.
Crawfish in the shallow can also be a very fun late summer adventure and a great way to start improving the breath hold/underwater hunting. I hope I get a chance to do it again and drop a vid on that soon.
Great idea, I will give it a shot.@@catchncookcalifornia1574
Ever considered traveling abroad and showcasing local foraging techniques? Keep up the quality vids!
I defiantly have. That may be a future project but for now there is still so much to share from our local environment and cultures. This channel has barely scratched the surface. Thanks for watching!
Damn so many regulations!
Yup. But that's why there are still fish. Without those regulations every fish in the nearshore would be taken (undersized with no chance to reproduce) and sold on the market. This is why in much of Europe you have do dive like 80 feet to spear much of anything. The rules are a lot to navigate here but the healthy abundance of species that we can take in very shallow water is a reflection of those rules/ good management.
*This channel is going to blow*
helllll yeah!! you rock!!!!
you sure that first fish was a bass? it looks like a rainbow trout to me
You mean one of the little guys that swam by? Might be. I thought I saw a trout at one point amid all the bass on that trip.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 yes! that one. I'm no pro identifying fish under water, but I think trout. haha. either way this was an excellent video. please keep them coming.
@@christophermccullough431definitely a bass. 👍 but not a largemouth like he states. First one was a smallie. The others are indeed largemouth.
After looking online I couldn’t find much on where we can spearfish in CA.
Any help with a link?
The Valley District, Black Butte Lake and the Colorado River District are all defined in the Cal DFW regulations. Other than that you will have to research it. People are very secretive about their spots out there so out of respect for them I will not give up this spot. Good luck and have fun!
New to the sport I bought Sea Doo Fish Pro Trophy 2023. I've been following your adventures! If you want to use my vessel for any adventures let me know! I'm always available.i have full gear f9r spear fishing and diving but never tried. What an amazing video brother 👏 Colorado River or Catalina Island 🏝 😀
Very cool! Thanks for the offer! Come do an entry level guided spearfishing outing with me the next time I'm in SoCal. If you like it and decide to get into it and get some practice maybe we can take that Sea Doo out to some kelp and hunt some yellowtail next summer!
I gave up freshwater spearfishing cause regulation for freshwater spearfishing is way complicate... beside somehow freshwater is kinda spooky... anyway, thanks for awesome video.
Carp are pretty common to spear fish. I think we need demostrated delicious recipes
Agreed!
Greetings, my wife and I are very interested in signing up for your upcoming coastal foraging and mushroom foraging classes in the Bay Area. Can you please link us?
Right on! If you email me at catchncookca@gmail I can get you on my email list for upcoming outings!
Geez, did you eat all that?
Lol yup! But I also didn't have dinner later.
Food police .... chill out mate, your acting as if he's having 5 McDonald's meals 🙄
@@TobinFrosty lol it was a feast... but I worked for it after all that paddling too
