Cheers m8, eating Dungeness on buttered sourdough while watching! Love your honorable spirit
I really enjoy living vicariously through your videos. This really inspires me to want to get out and do it myself. Thanks for the great content
Right on Vince! I highly recommend it! There are few more freeing feelings in this world than freediving under the sea! Be safe and have fun!
KEVIN! You really are so amazing man!
Your content is priceless!
You are amazing!
I am so happy I found your channel. The BEST channel I've come across!
Your videos are awesome. The narration, the info, your thoughts. It all flows really well with your voice and coinciding videography.Great job Kevin👍✌. I learn a bunch watching your videos even after watching " the guys" Matts, Taku, Adam etc
Thanks!
Shear torture Kevin!
No Dungeness here in Tucson Arizona so we rely on Costco for our iced crab. I used to harvest my own off the Washington state coast and miss the hell out of dropping traps, retrieving hours later, and putting out a great spread. Butter dripping everywhere. Adore your work.
Blessings,
K.T.
already got me with the cousteau quote
Big thumbs up yo you!! You found a piece of equip and you are attempting to return it to it's owner. Very cool. 👍👍👍👍
Nothing beats getting in the water and checking for yourself!
holy there are so many crabs in the sand cool footage!
Come dive with me next time bro!
Absolutely fascinating. I loved the underwater footage.
Great video, beautiful scenery, looks delicious. Thanks for taking us along.
Looks great have fun & be safe
Thanks!
The quality is insane, good job sir!
Thank you!
what I noticed from watching scallops and crabs while hunting for them is that when they feel a change of shadow or water movement near them , they will react by hiding or closing the shell mouth so even if putting bait in front of them they will sense danger and run or hide until is all ok for them to open up again, since they have very bad eye sight, light sensitivity is their best weapon ( when I shine a bright light to a scallop from 3or 4 ft away many will close their mouth to camouflage, so hunting close to them is not good , better to spot them from a distance and focus their position even if the hide )... just my 2 cents ; hope to get back in the water soon and great idea how to set up the board for gear ;I actually have those boards trying to set up something like that to pull behind my kayak .if kayak diving ,so thank you for all your videos!! I am in LA and hope to see you out there some day ! Cheers my friend !
Agreed. Yet, even when I left that snare for five min these crabs were not interested and a typical interval between pulling crab snares is about eight min so I think these simply were not feeding. Also, when I soaked the fish heads for the whole dive the only crab on them was a male so I think the females here had other egg-related plans. Maybe similar to salmon that do not feed when reproducing?
Got my wet suit coming next week can’t wait, the water visibility is amazing compared to wa
I've done this once and it was so much fun. I need to get out there and try it again some day. Also crab melts are the best. Definitely my favorite crab dish. Great video Kevin!
That was the first crab melt of my life and will definitely not be my last! I made one for my girl a couple of hours later when she got home and she loved it too!
Mine is set up as a backpack as well, for some of the sketchier entry points, made with similar technology. Ya I gotta get back out there.
Cool dive and that crab melt looked killa
Thanks for the info! I’m from Hawaii and raised diving and frequent Oregon visitor and always wondered if it’s legal to dive for Dungeness crab! Just have to find a wet suit for my over sized body hahaha think water to cold to jump in
Very eye opening video. Thanks man!
Hello from brand new subscriber. Great video. I look forward to watching more of yours like this. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching and commenting Jamie!
Great video! love the shots, the music, the edits and all that great information! I am a hardened California recreational crab fisherman and even for me it was some good info.. Now you got me wanting to try diving for them.
Right on B K! Glad you enjoyed it!
Good stuff man, great tips as always.
Champion breath holds
If you keeping them you got to do a catch and cook and eating them which a lot of the crabers aren't doing but isn't that the reason you're catching them is to cook them up and eat them boiled or steamed or just sitting around the table picking them with a couple cold brews
So interesting!
I figured you would like seeing that! Daniel once asked me if I ever noticed if females all clustered up at times. He said he caught dozens of them with a snare then moved spots and it was all males. At the time I told him I had not seen anything like that, but this footage definitely shows differences between the behaviors of the two sexes!
Catch N Cook California--this is such an excellent video. Pretty sure Ive seen nearly all of your videos, and this is top 3 of my favorite! Seeing the snares underwater with the crabs is so cool! I really enjoy underwater footage. Would love to see more with the cam that attaches to a fishing line. Philosophy D, ChrisP, FishermansLife have all done a few vids like that and they're great!
Thanks for watching! I will see if I can get one of those cams.
NIce Kev! So I have a question... When we going diving again? 🤿
This makes me want to drive to the coast and go dive, preferably with you!
Let's go!
Do you think you can make a video and or send links on where to buy all the dive board equipment + whatever assembly required?
The assembly is the beginning of this video. All the links are in the video description. Thanks for watching.
That grab is like "Take my strong hand"
Thanks for great videos! Question: if you keep fish in that net bag for lobsters, don't sea lions or seagulls try to reach it thru the bag?
They do not really bother us. Gulls, sea lions and seals are most bold around highly populated areas where humans feed them. They look but do not touch in the more wild places where we hunt. Good question!
l o l little crab feet!! Deadpool 100% excellent video!!
What general part of California are you in? I’m in southern Oregon and am very new to diving. I just want to see how your lessons will apply to the situation here
I mostly film from Mendocino to L.A. in these videos but I spearfished for years in Humboldt andf Del Norte so this content absolutely translates to the North Coast and Oregon Coast. You will find mostly the same species up there (perch, rockfish, cabs, lings, Dungeness, scallops, etc.). Good luck!
That crab melt looks ridiculous...ly good!
I would love to do this one day
Hit me up sometime! I guide this stuff!
Where do you do your foraging classes? In southern CA or somewhere else? I am located in HMB and interested but tough to travel with little kids at home!
That looks yummy! 😋 Do you take orders??
Nice I always wanted to try diving for crab. Why don't you use a dive tube like we use for Abalone?
I highly recommend a crab dive! The tubes definitely work but are far less streamline when gliding over kelp or going through waves or riding a wave back in over the rocks in heavy surf in my experience. I also find that for longer guns and pole spears they seem to be more secure on the longer profile of the body board. My experience has also been, when diving with someone using a tube, when we go to kick from one rock to another the diver with the body board covers the distance in about half of the time.
Thank you for the video, how deep were you diving?
6-20ft
murky sandy bottom always gives me chills. Did landlord ever paid you a visit?
Not on that dive but the Taxman is definitely out there!
super
nice
I love the set up but I do see some flaws,
Using a yellow milk crate for visibility, I've affixed an inner tube with rope, providing a buoyant platform. A dive flag mounted on a 4-foot, 1-inch PVC water pipe ensures visibility. This setup not only holds my gear but also serves as a marker for others. For storage while traveling, a container accommodates my knife and equipment, maintaining tidiness in the car. Carabiners secure my goodies bag, spear gun, collapsible crab cage, and anchor, the rope as a measuring tool with markers to know how deep I will be diving, making for a comprehensive and efficient arrangement.
Sounds like another great setup!
Are there any books you recommend for what is edible/ legal to eat?
The legality is one issue and the edibility and how/where to find it is another. For legal rules check out the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Ocean Fishing Regulations PDF and Ocean Regulations Map for where you can and cannot go. For info on how to find/catch fild fish and shellfish on the coast, check out Kirk Lombard's The Sea Forager's Guide to the North Coast. It absolutely applys to NorCal and SoCal alike in my opinion. We also just launched a forum on my website catchncookcalifornia.com where you can go to meet folks in your area, ask questions, share info, etc. Hope that helps!
any tips for diving the sandy areas with more than 2ft vis? every time I try to dive where the crabs are it's almost completely dark at depth
The only tips I could give there is to try an wait a few days after a big swell for the turbidity to settle out and try to hit areas with larger sand grain size and less silt so it will settle out of the water column faster. Also, try to dive in deeper holes and avoid the sand bars that are shallower as the vis seems to diminish rapidly where the wave action is more violent.
Could you use zipties instead of the strings? seems easier and more reliable to me
Certainly possible! Just get some heavy duty ones as the ocean loves to degrade materials quickly!
Any recs on beginner spots to try this?
Any sandy beach in central CA or Northern CA. Beginners would do best in sandy bottom coves where the swell might be less severe. I would only suggest going on the calmest of calm days though.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574when trying new spots in coves are you worried at all about sharks? That’s the only thing that scares me about NorCal diving
i hope this question is not taken more than what it is, are you diving alone? I ask bec its been very diff to find buddies..also sched dont work easily
I do dive alone on occasion but I defiantly do not recommend it and especially not for beginner divers.
You evwr see sharks? My higgest fear
Interesting to see the crabs not feeding on the snare when it’s put in front them.
Yeah! I was really not expecting that at all!
When's the next dive?
As soon as the seas calm down again!
Pretty sure the crab weren't feeding because they are in protection mode over there eggs. I bet a male would of tried. :)
Don't you need a dive flag? Maybe I missed it.
It is a good idea for areas with high boat traffic but I do not fly one in secret spots or areas with no boat traffic.
