Do you draw your composition after toning your canvas ? I see that you use charcoal for your drawing… if you draw on top of the toning, how do you keep the charcoal from smudging? And do you let each layer dry? What mediums do you use?
No, I prefer to draw mine before the imprimatura. I seal the drawing with Krylon's Workable Fixatif which keeps it from washing away. Yes, since I paint in layers, I let each layer dry (which is typically overnight). Liquin is my primary medium (which is what helps the layers to dry overnight).
It depends on what you're trying to achieve. For me, there's usually some luminosity in the sky, so the warmer colors will go there. I also knew this one was going to be foggy, so that's why I went with the grays. (You can see the final painting here: th-cam.com/users/shortsaDLsFa_n884 ) I go into more detail in my ebook. If you don't have that yet, you can download it here: laynejohnson.com/ebook
It's just a Dell monitor that allows the image to rotate so I can look at it horizontally or vertically. The monitor is attached to a swing arm mount so I can position it where it's convenient. 👍

This is oils. But yes, you can do it with acrylics as well. Download a copy of my ebook (Begin with an Imprimatura) - it goes into more detail on the imprimatura-bistre stage: laynejohnson.com/ebook
Thank you so much for this longer video..I love having this in-depth look into how you work! Beautiful smokey and rich earthy cooler tones in this underpainting..I had an inkling there was going to be mist! ☺️ I’m guessing you use Liquin to speed drying time? Can I also say, much as watching you work is super cool , I’m loving the late appearance of Newt..a lot..big cat fan here!! 😁😁😁
Yes, this is in oils. And yes, each layer needs to dry. But the medium I use (Liquin) helps the paint dry faster. So typically it's ready to paint on again the next day. So there's not much waiting involved. 👍

I've seen paper being used to blot up sections in watercolour - but never before in oils . Learnt something new from you ! Thanks !
You're very welcome! I actually started doing this back when I painted in watercolors. 👍

Con qué tonifica el lienzo?
Usa óleo o acrílico?
Y con qué barniz sella la pintura?
Very very nice🎉
Thanks a lot 😊
How do you kbow what color to use when you do the blocking in part of the underpainting?
It depends on what you're trying to achieve. For me, there's usually some luminosity in the sky, so the warmer colors will go there. Hey Layne, what do you use for a mount and reference monitor there, it looks pretty handy.
It's just a Dell monitor that allows the image to rotate so I can look at it horizontally or vertically. The monitor is attached to a swing arm mount so I can position it where it's convenient. 👍
The new TVs are so inexpensive today, many will do Airplay, which I what I think I'll do. What's the swing arm you're using?

Thank you! Only a few older vineyard paintings.
I'm curious. Is your dark color at the bottom of the painting black? Or a combination of darker transparent colors?
There are several colors, but Cassel Earth and Ultramarine Blue are doing the heavy lifting. 👍
Hello, beginner here, is this an acrylic or oil painting? I'm painting with acrylic right now so wondered if i do the underpainting like you did
This is oils. But yes, you can do it with acrylics as well. Download a copy of my ebook (Begin with an Imprimatura) - it goes into more detail on the imprimatura-bistre stage: laynejohnson.com/ebook
I love your painting, and tank you for email me to give your suport❤

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I do use Liquin. 👍 Newt loves being in the studio! Probably more than any other cat I've ever had. 🐈⬛️
I love it so far. What size canvas is that one?
Thanks! This one is 32"x48".
❤
Thanks!
What color is this beautiful underpainting?
For the imprimatura, mostly Transparent Earth Red and Transparent Yellow Oxide. For the grays, it was mostly Ultramarine and Cassel Earth. 👍
@@LayneJohnsonStudio Thank your for clarifying!
Love this! How do you seal the charcoal drawing so that it doesn't wash out with the glazes?
Thanks! Yes, I use Workable Fixatif by Krylon to seal my drawings before I do any painting.
How long does it took? Is it oil ? So you have to wait always for next layer right?
Yes, this is in oils. And yes, each layer needs to dry. But the medium I use (Liquin) helps the paint dry faster. So typically it's ready to paint on again the next day. So there's not much waiting involved. 👍
Thank you @@LayneJohnsonStudio
@@einarjungmann273 You're very welcome!
Do u use fixative on top of your drawings?
Yes, to seal the drawing. I like Krylon's Workable Fixatif. 👍
@LayneJohnsonStudio thank u so much for your quick reply!
