Smush is a technical term! Love this! IMHO this is a perfect combo of eastern and western landscape painting it has the specificity of western landscape with the atmosphere and imaginative perceptiveness of eastern landscape.
I couldn't help but notice how easy it was to trust your canvas at a higher height. Will you please show us your setup. It seems as if it's better than the one that I have to signed for myself. LOL . really appreciate it❤ thank you.😇
I am experimenting with Radiograph mechanical pens to actually draw using a PVA gesso mix I made specially to draw with. Imagine a gray, or a sepia tone, anything you wish, in your hand putting out a smudge-free line that is no different than the gesso background...
Great painting! So inspiring... What is the purpose of using the marker over the pencil sketch? Does it help with the luminosity effect somehow? Or? Subscribed now...🎨
This was a really big canvas, so rather than taking it down off the easel and taking it outside to spray the drawing with a fixative, I used an acrylic marker to seal the lines. Thanks!
Hi there! I am new to all the mediums and solvents and varnishes for oil painting. (I know I'm almost certainly getting those terms mixed up, too.) Is there any non-toxic alternative to liquin to make layers dry faster? Or should I just not worry about its toxicity? Additionally, I purchased some linseed oil to thin my paints - I've heard this can't be used alongside liquin. Is that true? I have been trying to find some kind of comparison chart of all the options. It's making my head spin!
Hi Gabriel - Solvents are really the bigger issue if you're concerned about toxicity. I personally haven't had any issue with Liquin and I've been using it for decades. Just know that linseed oil will move the paint really well, but it will SLOW the drying time. I find Liquin is generally all I need for my medium (and that's what I teach in my courses). So keep it simple. :-) Also, if you're concerned about toxicity, try Chelsea's organic solvents (I like their Lavender Brush Cleaner). They're wonderful!
hi , what is the use of putting grid on your reference? theres no grid on ur canvas to match it with , just curious , also from where do you get your reference landscapes?
If you go back to the beginning of the video when there's a close up of my canvas when I'm drawing, you can see the grid (0:14 - 0:29). By the time I start painting, I've typically erased the light grid lines. For my references, I drive all around the areas I like to paint and take LOTS of photos. I've been collecting reference for years. :-)

I like this color because it's the complement of the blue sky - so it gives the sky more luminosity. But yes, you can use other colors, depending on what you're trying to achieve. If you don't have it already, take a look at my free ebook (Begin with an Imprimatura). It includes all the info, including the other color variations you can use. >> laynejohnsonstudio.ck.page/ebook22
Ich habe diese Technik des Untermalens schon öfter gesehen - verstehe aber den Sinn nicht. Ich male einfach auf die weiße Leinwand - machen doch die meisten oder?
Most people? I have no idea. :) But if you're painting using classical techniques (especially painting in layers), then you start with a toned canvas, and also possibly an underpainting. You can download my free ebook with explains more about it: laynejohnson.com/ebook
Those clouds already look so voluminous! Amazing

I love using transparent red earth as a under tone more so than burnt sienna. I find it gives a better glow
I agree!

This is oils. The imprimatura layer the paint is thinned with odorless mineral spirits. I also typically add a little bit of Liquin. 👍

Yes, that's what is on the base layer. Even on canvases I buy, I'll add more gesso and then sand it between layers to get the surface smoother.
i tried this method but my paint would not rub off as yours does why is this ,as the paint i applied looked the same consistancy as yours.
Yea the same problem happened to me. But I think it happened becuz quality of my canvas is very bad and it absorbed all the paint I applied immediately
Is there a reason you use a bright orange for the under painting? Could you have used grey?

Great video! Do you sometimes use a pen to sketch first?
No, never pen. Typically Conte, charcoal, pastel, or graphite.
And thanks!

Love to know what kind of monitor that is and how you use?
It's just a Dell 32" - but I have it mounted on an arm that rotates so I can turn it vertical or horizontal, depending on my reference. 👍
Do you gesso your canvas before you start anything?
Always. I like a very smooth surface, so I typically add additional coats even if the canvas was pre-gessoed.
Off topic, what kind of monitor is that?
It's just a Dell 32" - but I have it mounted on an arm that rotates so I can turn it vertical. 👍

Proprio questo colorante non riesco a capire dove comprarlo
It's simply oil paint that's been thinned with odorless mineral spirits.
Why is it that the hard acrylic lines, especially at the edges of the clouds, don't show through the final oil painting?
I paint in layers but also use opaque pigments (especially later in the painting), which covers the lines.
