    This review certainly helps in terms of giving a good first look at it while I didn’t have had time to tinker with it myself yet. But the main questions on my mind didn’t get answered unfortunately:
    A) Is the iPad Pro M1 sufficient or does it need to be at least an M2 version?
    B) Since all devices need to share the same WiFi, can this work in the middle of a forest so they feast off each other rather than a base station?
    C) What’s the oldest iPhone that still works and with what maximum resolution and fps? Like in my case, I still have two iPhone X and would love to know whether they still have some value here?
    I’m not even talking about the official requirements and recommendations but real life experience what does and does not work and what might just work so-so in terms of being able to utilize older hardware.

  • @raymondbabbitt4583

    So, to be clear, to use the multicam feature the host needs to be an iPad running Final Cut Pro 2 and NOT the Final Cut Camera app? I haven't bought into the FCP subscription at this point, but after fussing with the camera app on multiple phones I gathered this may be the case. Also, can I hotspot a personal WiFi network from one of my devices to connect them all? Thanks

  • @jlwilliams

    I was hoping for live switching too [hey, Apple, suggestion for a quick workaround: how about the ability to tap to add a mark to the active track, to speed up final render later?] but I get it: this is NOT for the Jordan Drakes of the world. It's for people who can get pretty good video with one iPhone, and would like to make multi-angle videos without having to add a lot of expensive hardware or learn a lot of nerdy stuff. For them, this new capability is, if not a home run, a solid triple. What really caught my attention is other than the wide-angle distortion (which is Chris's fault for not having a bigger house) the finished segment looked really polished.

Also I wonder how easy it is to edit the resulting multicam clips in premiere or avid - can you just export them as normal? One of the big pain points with iPhone / iPad is slowwwww usb. I have a 2021 iPad Pro and a 2023 iPhone 14 Pro Max and they crawllll over usb / thunderbolt for transferring files :)

    Thanks for this overview! A little disappointed that FCP does not support live switching. I’ll stay with Ecamm Live for live switching with 4K recording. Mac only app. It is live streaming software, but I find the recording feature more useful.

    how is it better than obs?

    • @mavfan1
      @mavfan1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Why don’t you tell us?

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I use OBS to run live-streaming at work, so I'll tell you. Like Chris said, they're entirely different systems. OBS is for live streaming and switching in real time. FCP multicam is for recording multi-angle video to be edited later. (You can record an OBS stream, but you can't save all the camera angles, only the final output, so you can't change your mind later about which shot to use.) Also, while OBS works with lots of different kinds of video input devices, setup is not for the faint-hearted. FCP multicam works wirelessly and the only setup you have to do is launch the camera apps and FCP. It should be great for casual ad-hoc setups to be edited into final videos later, while OBS continues to be a great solution if you are hard-wiring a studio to stream content onto Twitch, TH-cam, etc.

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bonus fun fact since I was just playing around with OBS: If you want to stream or record basic two-angle videos, you can do it with a recent desktop or laptop Mac running OBS, a recent iPhone, and nothing else! You can use your Mac's webcam as one OBS video source (say, a shot of you explaining) and your iPhone as another OBS video source using the MacOS/iOS "continuity camera" feature (say, an overhead shot of your desk, kitchen counter or workbench where you're demonstrating something.) This is less than half the capability Apple is offering with FCP on iPad -- you're only capturing two cameras and you can't adjust them remotely and stuff -- but for people wishing they could use a desktop/laptop Mac instead of an iPad and want live switching rather later editing, it would be a zero-extra-cost solution that's pretty easy to set up.
      My dream: Apple will publish an API for Final Cut Camera and somebody will write an OBS plug-in to access it so you'll be able to do live-switched multicam stuff off a laptop from within OBS...

    • @Your_Paramour
      @Your_Paramour 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jlwilliams Aren't there some plugins for OBS that will let you record from one of the sources (instead of just the final output)?

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Your_Paramour I found a third-party plugin called Source Record that implements as a filter and records one source, but haven't tried it because: (1) it's at version 0.3.4; (2) it hasn't been updated since May 2021; (3) installation seems a bit janky and (4) reviews on the page lean toward "useful but not very stable." Maybe there are some other/better ones (pointers anyone?) but if your goal is to record multiple camera views and combine them later in a polished edit, I still think FCP or another multicam-capable editor would be a more reliable approach.
