  • Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed after making a tackle during Monday night's game and is in critical condition.
The NFL announced the Bills-Cincinnati Bengals Monday Night Football game has been postponed.
"Tonight's Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game has been postponed after Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin collapsed, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced," an NFL statement read. "Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics. He was then transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition.
"Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
"The NFL has been in constant communication with the NFL Players Association which is in agreement with postponing the game."
The NFLPA also released a statement:
"The NFLPA and everyone in our community is praying for Damar Hamlin. We have been in touch with Bills and Bengals players, and with the NFL. The only thing that matters at this moment is Damar's health and well being."
In the first quarter, Hamlin tackled Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin got up to his feet, but then collapsed backward onto the field. Hamlin required CPR while on the field for several minutes before being transported in an ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Hamlin, 24, was attended to on the field, with players from both teams surrounding him, some of them visibly emotional.
Officials spoke with coaches from both teams prior to players warming up to restart the game. The decision was then made to halt play, and players and coaches exited the field to the locker room.
Since his hospitalization, there has been an outpouring of support to a community fundraiser Hamlin previously established.
Hamlin was a sixth-round pick of the Bills in the 2021 NFL Draft. He's started 14 games in his second season.

That’s thanks to CPR and the AED being utilized immediately. Brain/muscle damage during cardiac arrest results from a lack of fresh oxygen being delivered to the tissue because blood is not being circulated through the body when the heart stops. CPR/AEDs just simulate the beating of the heart so the blood continues to circulate through the body and distribute fresh oxygen to the tissues. If he’d not had that, he could’ve still survived but likely would’ve had permanent damage to his brain or body or both. If you have to have a heart attack, other than a hospital, I can’t think of a better place to have one than on the field during an NFL game. They have full medical teams and high-end equipment on hand at all times during a game and an ambulance on standby, so he was in the best of hands.

Just worked up the courage to watch this in the weeks after Hamlin has appeared to have survived the worst of it and begun his recovery. Thank you for putting up and cutting this together in a way that's informative without being exploitative--I and many other fans appreciate it. I hope and pray we don't see anything more terrifying than this on a football field ever again.

If you think about it, on the field there were 2 teams, each team fighting for their ticket to advance towards the “Greatest Show on E”
As soon as Damar collapsed, everything and everyone stood still. Two teams became one, they all dropped to their knees praying for Damar. I just wish that everyone, everywhere would live their lives like that. I know I’m living in a dreamland, but instead of Road Wars, Neighborhood Wars and Customer Wars, why, why, why do we have to live our lives in fear? If you see someone in trouble, instead of looking and running the other way, how about running to them until help arrives. I know it’s just wishful thinking but we only have one life, maybe everyone should do as they did on that football field. Wishful thinking? Probably.

I watch nfl all of the time from preseason until Super Bowl. Even though I am a chiefs fan I will tell you when I watched this game is was heartbreaking. I am so glad he survived that night. I cried that night because I have been a position where I was performing at a football game and then player had a concussion and we sat there 1 hour but still we played the game. I am glad they stopped the game that very scary. I am glad he is doing ok now.

So glad the guy is ok.
I am a Union Official in Australia, and I can only speak from that perspective, when a worker (lets be honest these players are more like family than co-workers) is injured or god forbid life and death situation on a site, employer shuts down the site and after guaranteeing the workers best care, provides support and counselling to all who need it.
Seemed leadership were too in shock to make that call straight away, but it is the only safe and caring decision after an in incident like this.

what i love is that every single person in that stadium bills fan or player or bengals fan or player, was completely worried, i truly believe that not a single person in attendance wanted that game to resume. and what the guy said was exactly right, we are all used to seeing injury types such as concussion, broken bones, torn ligaments.. whatever. but when it becomes life and death is definitely a whole different story. also bravo to the players giving Damar his privacy by blocking cameras and making sure no one was going to see him on live television fighting for his life. So glad he's okay.
