  • For 2016 BMW continues their tradition of making incremental rather than revolutionary changes to their bread and butter sedan. The 2016 340 is a little sharper, a little more powerful and a little more polished than the 2015 335i.

    I just purchased a new 2017 BMW 340i xDrive with the M Performance Power and Sound kit and also M Carbon Fiber parts. Absolutely incredible car and I love it! Very luxurious and high-end materials, great performance, and an incredible exhaust sound. The perfect daily driver! Not a big fan of the steering wheel shown in this review. But the 2017 340i's come standard with the M Package and M steering wheel that I have in my car is just incredible!

      ... but I see it as a sign of quality (or lack thereof). But then I got a big discount for this new car, and the engine is fantastic, so it's still a good value ... it's just several notches below the fun level of a E9x.

    My favorite part of Alex on Autos videos are when he compares the vehicle being reviewed versus other vehicles its directly competing against with and feature by feature differential comparisons. The last 15mins of Alex on Autos videos are the best. One of my favorite channel in the TH-cam Car review community. Keep it going, full power.

    Although reliability is not much of an issue to the majority who will initially lease these luxury sedans, it is a major factor to the minority who will purchase them new or used. As such it is a bit of an oversight to avoid the subject. Watching this review I was also reminded of how the manual transmission is disappearing in the 'sport sedan' category so I'll have to credit BMW for for keeping it alive.

      I own a 2015 335i and the ONLY THING I WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGE is a dedicated port or cubby for the car key(s). I end up throwing cell phone and keys in the cup holder therefore loosing use of one cup holder. ugh. just my one complaint. other than that I LOVE THIS CAR!!

    There are hundreds of 3 series used for sale in nearly every major market. A 335i used is a screaming bargain as apparently so many come off lease the market is flooded. 2013 CPO M sport with 3 full years of warranty is $32-$34K at my local BMW dealer, one of the biggest in the nation. You'll pay $53K and up comparably equipped for a new 340i. $21,000, or 65% more for essentially the same car, both with warranties for 3 years.

    Another great video!
    Two quick things worth addressing:
    1. The 340i in M Sport trim does come with an upgraded steering wheel. Super nice IMO.
    2. Manual and automatic transmissions are the same price, so no impact to your wallet either way.

    • @chrissorreda4982
      @chrissorreda4982 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What they actually do is make the automatic standard (really good one i'm sure everyone already knows) and make the manual a no cost option. You're basically paying for the Automatic whether you get it or not.

    • @Scorpio1075
      @Scorpio1075 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Helps BMW out in three ways:
      1. People think they're saving money by not having to pay more for the auto. Like you said BMW has the cost already priced in.
      2. It makes BMW more money by charging those who buy the manual the extra cost of an Auto.
      3. By making the auto seem free of charge more buyers will opt for it, helping increase BMW's fleet fuel mileage.

    I currently drive a 2008 335xi and have several modifications in place (JB4, downpipes, straight pipe exhaust system, spacers). I am interested in trading this in for a new 2016 340i, however, I test drove an Infiniti 2016 Q50S Red Sport (400hp) and really enjoyed the driving experience with the Infiniti. I found that the Q50S has more interior space, more advanced technology, more horsepower (the car is a beast), and doesn't have the staggered tire formation (AWD model). With staggered tires, you can't rotate the tires, and have to spend significantly more on tire replacement. I know that the BMW drives and handles extremely well having owned one for 6 years, however, the poor reliability factor of the BMW concerns me. What is your opinion on both cars and is the new BMW built better than the 2008 335xi which is prone to check engine lights and numerous very expensive repairs. I'm having a tough time deciding which is the better car. They are both similarly priced. Please shed your insight on both of these amazing machines. Thank you

    • @Spartan69117
      @Spartan69117 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jason Skolar BMW has totally revised their turbo engines. They now rank 7th best in reliability. If you want low end torque even more than your N54 335i, the 340i is excellent. The 3 series are now 4 out of 5 stars in dependability. You'd be hard pressed to find a forum ragging on the previous N55 or the new 340i engine on problems with reliablity. Im currently at 32k miles with 0 issues and yes i drive hard.. i came from an N54.

  • @redskins5926
    @redskins5926 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review Alex! I myself went from an Infiniti Q50S to a BMW 328i a few months ago. Based on my experience with the two vehicles, I have to disagree with your viewpoint that the Q50 is a more fun car. I personally felt the Q50 to feel and handle like a larger vehicle. The Q50 sport suspension was definitely stiffer, so I appreciate the softer BMW suspension for my daily driver. Of course, my opinion is subjective; though all other aspects of both your Q50 and this BMW review are in line with my thoughts too.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +redskins5926 I agree with you actually, that was my take prior to the new 400HP Red Sport version of the Q50, and in that match up (Q50 RS 400 vs 340i) the way Infiniti designed the Q50 makes it more "fun" but less polished than the 340i and for that reason it's my choice.

    excellent video.very thorough and detailed.just one thing if you could comment more between 340i and c450 amg.how would you go about comparing it?what would be your preference and in what areas?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hariharan Visvanathan (Hari) In theory the C450 AMG is "almost an AMG" and it would be comparable to the 340i with the sport and track packages. That's the key there, the C450 has that all standard, the 340i starts with similar power but you have to add the handling and steering improvements.

    • @trulyhari
      @trulyhari 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex on Autos so you are saying that c450 amg would be equal to 340i with m sport package and adaptive suspesion.hence c450amg is a better bargain than 340i.consider the never changed bmw interior,merc is definetly refreshing.are u hinting that merc might be better value when priced similarly.

    • @snoborder87
      @snoborder87 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hariharan Visvanathan (Hari) - I've been looking at these exact cars, with the only exception being a 340i xDrive. The BMW does seem to have a more dated interior, but it feels more simple and familiar for some reason. The engine and transmission (8-speed Auto) are very strong in the BMW and despite having almost 50 less horsepower on paper does not feel like it in person. The steering feels a bit tighter in the BMW but has a tiny amount of dead-space a few degrees from center. The C450 makes a pretty wonderful sound from the exhaust with pops and cracks, but the BMW also has a nice soundtrack. The C450's interior feels much more upscale inside with a lot more brushed metal and leather on buttons and the dash respectively. I do like the "Individual" setting that the MB offers, allowing you to customize the various components the way you like; you have to step up to an M3/4 to get that with the BMW. The prices come to within about $1000 of one another when you spec them similarly but keep in mind BMW provides service and maintenance for the first several years (changing in 2017). I left out most of the extra self-parking and active driving assists on each car. I think it really comes down to which style and interior you prefer because the performance is really comparable without actual instrumentation and despite having to load the BMW up to have most of the same functionality as the C450, they're very similar.

    I wonder how the M 235i compares with this 340i. They both have the same hp with negligibly less weight in the 2 series, but also also less room with the 2 series. So I guess performance/handling wise would be my question?

    • @Persiacan
      @Persiacan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 340i has a better engine b58 especially on the top part of its power band. dynos are showing much closer to 370hp . The advantage of the m235 is the smaller overall size and decrease in weight making it a better handling car obviously. Their 0-60 times if both automatic should be almost identical.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Soultraveler Although the M235i is indeed a smaller car (10 inches) because the 2-Series is basically a shrunken 3 & 4 series it doesn't actually weigh much less. Depending on the options you choose the weight difference is going to be about 100 pounds. Because the suspension is so similar, the weight is so similar and the turning circle is almost identical as well, they don't really feel much different on an autocross style track. If you put identical tires on them they will actually handle about the same.

    • @goofydog2
      @goofydog2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Soultraveler has the "b58" engine been around for a long period of time proving it's endurance and reliability, and such? Also, what is the M235i motor designated as (b57, b56, or, for example)?

    • @Persiacan
      @Persiacan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +goofydog2 no it's new so there will be some issues that arrise im sure like anything new. Currently only available on the 340i but soon we will see it in the 440i and eventually the m240i and new 5 series. The m235 uses a moderatly tuned version of the n55 motor we have seen on the 335i.

      +BDofNLA I was OK with it. It stops the engine when the clutch pedal is not engaged and the transmission is in neutral. When you push the clutch in it starts the engine so teh result is that it's actually a little smoother than with an automatic since the engine has a hair more time to get "going"

    I would have thought the Q50 wold have compared more directly to the 5 series.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Joe Wilder The Q50 is a 3-series competitor, the Q70 is the 5-Series competitor. Infiniti doesn't consider the Q70L as a 7-series competitor, as far as they are concerned they don't compete with the 7.

      +Alex on Autos speaking of Infiniti, are they still have issue with cabin noise and lack of refinement for a luxury car?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +trilingualkid It is not as well polished as the BMW for sure, but in an odd way that's part of the charm.

    • @ThousanWhite
      @ThousanWhite 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +trilingualkid His review already talked about the cabin noise. That probably hasn't changed lol.

      +Joe Wilder Not quite. The Q50 is bigger than the 3 series but it's smaller than the 5.

      He did somewhat, but the s4 competes more with the 340 and mercedez is kinda weird with their models

    • @chrissorreda4982
      @chrissorreda4982 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Android602715 I meant when talking about interior space, trunk space, and other small things. Like he was acting as if those aren't direct competitors class wise regardless of engine.

    • @Android602715
      @Android602715 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Sorreda well mercedes has the cla coupe which can get up towards the 340i if you get the amg, and he did touch base with comparing the s4 because its more a direct competitor.

    Love the HUD, love the orange night lighting, love the I6 magic. If Tesla is truly building a 3 series competitor with the model 3, it has to have a HUD and orange night lighting, or no sale. I've been driving a nissan rental car the last several months and the blinding white lighting on the dash cluster is the worst thing I've ever experienced in a car. I don't get it at all, considering the rest of the car uses appropriate orange lighting.

    The CLA is just a nasty nasty car that's one to avoid. Cheap materials, terrible design and from what I've heard it doesn't bring stellar reliability. Probably a smart move to give this generation a miss. Always go for the 3 series if you're cross shopping with a CLA. The C class is a different story, that car is perfect in every way for the price and imho; smokes the 3 series. Got one last year and absolutely love it.

    The rear seats have good leg room, but I feel like they're not going to be very comfortable on long road trips. @ 4:00, you can see that Alex's thighs have no support whatsoever because the seat cushion is too low. It might be different for other people, but I don't know.

      Cars Life You're not getting the point. The rear seats look uncomfortable because they are designed poorly, being so low to the ground that passengers have no thigh support whatsoever.

    Alex...looking at you sitting in the rear seat, it seems your knees are a bit high off the ground and as such...so are your thighs. Is this uncomfortable on a longer drive?
    UG! Run Flats! I Hate these tires. It by itself keeps me away from ever really considering a BMW. I am guessing a whole lotta cars would have large trunks IF they omitted spares...right?
    I read a review of the Mazda 3 yesterday and they hit on it for its blackness interior. What do we have here...in a so called premium lux car...black everywhere.
    At time line 20 15 through 2031 you are showing the car from the front. There seems a weirdly wavi side profile. It starts at the top A pillar and waves/zig-zaggy profile on down the sidewall towards the wheel. Almost "w" ish. Is this as weirdly angular/wavy in real life?
