    It’s 2023 and this car is still a beast. It’s aged so well since 2016

    The name change (335 to 340) is due to the new engine. 335 came with the N55 block producing 300 hp/300 lb/ft torque, whereas the 340 comes with the new B58 engine (320 hp/330 lb/ft torque).

    • @nilzr1
      @nilzr1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      So where exactly did you explain the name change?

    • @DanielSimon1995
      @DanielSimon1995 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      just differentiation. just like 316 and 318.. 16 stands for the 1.8 litre engine and a 1.8 stands for the 2.0 litre engine.. (both of the 4 cyl)

    • @Cyrix2k
      @Cyrix2k 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even though the displacement is effectively the same, the engine is significantly different architecturally, hence the name change. Still odd IMO.

      i like the old names... they made sense and told you everything you needed to know right in the name, the fudge up with the new numbers. like the man, i am going SUV with my next vehicle

    Nice review. Just one point should be corrected. The 340 has the B58 engine, which is completely new and different to the N55 found in the 335. It is not a variant of the N55.

    • @BMWE90HQ
      @BMWE90HQ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AcuraTL1999 It is based on the N55 but features a closed deck design as opposed to an open deck. But yes it is a new engine.

    • @vismortis
      @vismortis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And bragging about that extra 20HP.... the N55 had the same power they just on paper rated the 335 at 300HP we all know it has more, new on a dyno it would get 350HP and also the N55 in the M235i with all the same drive components on paper was rated at 320HP.

    What a brilliant review - thank you!
    I've been looking at the three series, and the 340 in particular, and your review has been the only one so far that addresses ownership; space in the back, space in the trunk, dial layout, comfort, etc.
    Great job - thanks again!

    Dude. You gotta' talk about the B58. That's the soup & nuts. The G20 with the B58 is the new e30 M3. It will be an icon.

    My two cents: I drive A LOT of kilometers (more than 80k a year!!!). I do ok for my self and up until now my comfort was very important and so i've driven MANY german cars (pretty much all of them since i change them 3 times every two years).
    Now that i decided to go for property instead of high maintenance cars, i bought a reliable japanese (no, the germans were NOT reliable at all, i spent 8500 a year on upkeep, my bookie is very accurate, trust me...). So now im in a acura. Yes it has more features on paper, but the execution of those instruments is a joke. NOTHING works like i would like. even the sunroof feels cheap. materials are HONDA standards with a leather wrap. (yes on a 43000$ car). I feel like i went two steps down for the money. now i get it, thats why it's reliable. the complexity of components is SOOOOO different. they make weird noises, it has a traction control that i have to remember to turn off every drive, it has literally put me in situation where i found myself helpless. i have never had that in a german car. if you ask me, my first real car was a jetta, and it has higher quality design (well not materials since it sells for LESS than half the price). everything was solid. now i feel like nothing was designed to be used but just to claim it's there... once i can afford it again i'm going back to know my mechanic and not my therapist. thank you for reading.

      Roman Ash well said! I'm looking at my first German car and the maintenance cost is my biggest concern, I am now looking at leasing and keeping my other car as backup if I rack up too many miles! I like having options also

    • @vismortis
      @vismortis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      its not that horrable if you know how to deal with it. The myth that parts are crazy costly compared to a Honda for example is just that a myth, yes there is a bit of a premium for parts but that is more newer car vs older car, if you find the parts online and have a good mechanic then you dont get smacked by that. Also Jap/US car parts for 3 year old cars (that sweet spot when the factory warranty is up) are nearly as bad.
      Also i have a 335xi 2013. outside upkeep and full breaks (rotors and pads which i am partially to blame for) im at 66,000 miles only thing that went wrong is the water pump and that expected on a BMW they go at that milage.

      there's japanese luxury brands for a reason try lexus and come to yt bitching about not having lux, it has better everything than bmw.... plus the toyota million miles quality. you will be driving with style, in a massage seat, with tons of tech quality and luxury.

    Great review, I had an older 325 straight 6 and loved it, then child, family, practicality etc....now just can’t force myself to buy new so got a great deal on 2015 328i x drive low km, and of course sport pkg. coming soon and can’t wait. Yes SUVs are taking over sales, but try taking a corner in one.

    I owned a 2011 328i xDrive 4-door and found it was really cramped for me and my young kids. I owned it for about a year and ended up selling because of this reason. But, five years on, I still want a 3-series. This 340i seems like an awesome vehicle but the G50 seems like better value for the money. Good review.

    This would look better on sports suspension rather than Xdrive. The extra height changes the aesthetic. I was about to pull the trigger on this car, but went for the 430d in the end. It's less practical in the rear but it's better looking, better wider chassis and has a powered tailgate.

    I love the way BMWs drive. I have a '15 335i and it is a great car - maybe not as firm as my '11 e90 was, but still a pretty solid car. Too bad that they depreciate to nothing once the warranty expires. Post-warranty repairs make them unaffordable by most. Who would pay $5000 or more a year on maintenance when you can just buy a new one?

    The BMW 340i xdrive or the Infiniti Q50 will probably be my next car because:
    1. Performance and fun
    2. AWD for Colorado winters
    3. Comfortable on cross-country trips
    4. Luxury and technology (leather, adaptive cruise, lane keeping, etc.)
    I plan to do a lot of research and drive both cars a few times before taking the plunge.

      BMW-E90-HQ you have to understand CO. Snow can happen in some areas from September - May Yeah its gone the next day but still you really really need your daily to drive in the snow..... Ever seen a thunderstorm with snow not rain? In crazy cases the ski resorts are open for the 4th of July for skiing!
      Snow tires also make a huge difference, my 228i RWD with snow tires destroyed my 335XI with all seasons the 335XI slides in the snow with all seasons the 228i never did..... next year im breaking down and putting the snows that are sitting in my garage on the 335.

    • @vismortis
      @vismortis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a 2014 228i (never buy year 1 model car from anyone). And now have a 2013 335i. the 335i has a ton of power and petrol heads will say go for the bigger engine but in the US the speed limit is 65 - 70. the 330i can get there just fine and is well built my 228i was just as fun if not more so because i could use the engine as the 335i.
      also fun fact the 2-series and 3 series have a major complaint from real owners that have driven a 328i and a 335i that reviewers will almost never tell you. BMW forgot to modify the suspension on the 335i to adapt for the heavier engine so the *28i will corner a hell of a lot better so its something you CAN use / notice vs extra HP that is only reached at 5000 RPM that you will never use on US roads.
      Now the catch is, I am in the north east and wanted a stick and X-Drive to get that i had to go 335XI as they dropped X-Drive manual from the 328i lineup.

    • @Bmwguy2011
      @Bmwguy2011 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No way. There’s no substitute whatsoever for a bmw in-line 6. I went back a little in the line and bought a 128i manual and a 325xi manual wagon. My opinion: any e90 (2006 - 2012/2013) manual bmw with the inline 6 will hold its value and probably appreciate in value. Nothing today but for the 340i compares and the 340i still packs high pressure fuel pumps/direct injection/turbos -all making it considerably less reliable after 130,000 or so miles and costly.

I just lay back and enjoy it... just love my 12 year old 200 k km aut 320d... average normal maintenance... effortless power delivery from low revs... musical... very secure car... enough acceleration to have fun... very light sensation... it flies to me... very musical,,,, don´t recommend M or race suspension... just average 19´ tires...the best for bumps and road holes... so confortable... I don´t like faster cars... make you aggressive... I could have any other "better car" but no way... will never change model... just has perfect equilibrium... less is more... minimalist... zen... and just love that power from low revs... my next baby... white color... safer than any other color... and with best sound system harman kardon... and family car... touring... what else... mozart playing inside...

    • @888TopGear888

      Thats not true. No journalist, magazine or car reviewer is willing to say that the BMW 3 Series is no longer the king of the segment because they're afraid of offending their followers. People expect to hear "BMW is the benchmark". When they hear otherwise, they'll react negatively.
      When Motortrend said the Cadillac ATS is a better drivers car than the 3 Series, the whole internet went nuts saying the guy is a moron.
      And the "less modification potential" is incorrect. You can put a forced induction kit on an Infiniti Q50 or Lexus IS350 for around $10,000 and easily make an extra 100 whp. If you want to modify the already turbocharged engine in the BMW, after Stage 1, you'll be changing internals and spend way more than 10k.
