  • A holy book, more than 1,000 years old, is expected to fetch tens of millions at auction. Sotheby’s is selling what’s viewed as “the oldest and most complete Hebrew Bible ever discovered.” The book is now called the Codex Sassoon, and its fragile pages offer spiritual lessons that serve as the foundation of both Judaism and Christianity. This Bible was handwritten on 792 pages of parchment. The highest bidder is expected to drop anywhere from $30 million to $50 million to take it home.

      It isn’t necessary. Document handling has changed since the early 20th century. Most experts don’t use gloves because it desensitizes your sense of touch and could lead you to accidentally rip the paper.
      Experts and professional archivists very rarely if ever use gloves when handling antiquarian documents anymore.
      And it’s parchment so it lasts longer than paper and doesn’t tarnish as easily. It’s lasted 1,100 years a few seconds of touching a page isn’t going to damage it.

      Yes they should. Besides the oils and unseen contaminants from your hands you could have bugs on you that enjoy the taste of 1000 year old paper. Even the light and air from outside gradually destroys the book. It would best be preserved behind UV glass and in a climate controlled environment. Of course, for a big auction/event its ok to show it off but this group seems to be a little too casual to be in charge of a masterpiece like this. Hopefully someone with a God fearing soul, or like minded organization, with good intentions and profound faith rescues the book fast and knows/wants/feels divinely convicted to preserve it.

    • @henrylivingstone2971
      @henrylivingstone2971 ปีที่แล้ว
