Exactly. Or whatever style will sell well. As a professional woodworker I lost count long time ago how many pieces I've done for people that I personally didn't like. If people want light colors they should give it a go themselves
You were super funny in this video Jay! 😂 I’m glad your kitten is getting along with the neighbors cat and has someone to play with ( or terrorize) while you are working! Being a lover of all things art deco, I started the video thinking you were going to restore it. By the time I figured out that you were not, I was disappointed, but wanted to see what you made out of it. The dresser turned out lovely, more modern. You did a fantastic job, as you always do!
I think you did a beautiful job restoring it. Normally, I am one of the people who prefers the natural, lighter wood look, but this time I would have gone with a nice walnut stain. For some reason, I think of art deco pieces as being darker. Plus it would have made the brass accents stand out more. This, however, is just a personal opinion and I don't mean to detract from the awesome job you have done. 💖
Experimentation is important. If you never try you don't know, right!?! Great restoration and thanks for sharing your ideas. For the future do what you think looks best that seems to be extremely successful!!
i'm half way through so i don't yet know how the end result would be (surely beautiful) but it's a little difficult to watch what you're doing because i'm mesmerized by Mando playing in the background🐱
What a sweet little unit. The kitten at the end made me smile and cry a bit, just had to have my fur baby put to sleep, he was with me for 16 years. Best wishes
Hi Karel. I was missing you! Just when I needed a furry fix, you and sweet Mando (and friend) appear on my horizon. He’s so scrumptious! I have photos of him in my phone albums and show him to cat lovers I know. They all just swoon! Now, on to business… That poor previous owner! She didn’t have a clue about restoration. It would be nice to show her what you did about it, to it, for it! She would gasp! I really love the way you experiment! There are endless possibilities with EVERY piece you work on,so it’s fabulous that you show us all some of them as you learn too! This turned out very well and I like it very much, and even the legs turned out fabulous- good save! I must say, you have mastered the dry humor of the Brits….those sanding comments are classic 😂. Love how Hugo and his lordship Mando, get on❤
A beautiful job, as always. I like the stain, but I am all for you doing what you like. You definitely have your your own style and it's very attractive. Handsome, even. Keep doing it. You can see that the Feline Management Team was having fun working together and overseeing your work! 😍😍😍😍😊😊😊😊 I love what you did with this piece. I you did great keeping it lighter than most deco pieces. The slightly darker staining helped bring out the grain. The hardware and painting the legs made it more upscale. Great job!
What beautiful work. I love the result, especially the curved handles. I admire the care with which you approach each project, and how you give furniture a new and beautiful life. Kotek is adorable.

I know you do this full time now, and I’m so glad the channel getting the recognition you deserve! Can support you as your main income. I enjoy your quirky and creative personality and approach to your work. 👍👍
You did a fine facial-restoration tutorial. (Your smile is the best facial of all, which is good advice for us all). The chest of drawers looks great also. It has nothing to be ashamed of now. Cats are delightful.
There's something so fulfilling about seeing a beat up piece of old furniture turned into such a beautiful thing. Love your work. Always look forward to the '2000 years later bit.'
Love the use of the electric planer. The quicker the veneer removal, the quicker you can get started on your favourite passtime - sanding. LOL Dark finish, light finish, it's all personal choice. You do you. I think that there will be someone out there who will love it. Don't be too disappointed in the end result.
Every now and again, one of your projects reminds me of the old joke about the 90-year old man with a remarkable axe he's had since he was a boy. "And it's only had four new heads and seven new handles." The cabinet looks amazing--the tinted oil finish is unexpected and rather lovely. Great hardware. I'd use it at the side of my bed.
Normally I am very much in the dark stain and dark wood camp, but I actually really liked this piece! I liked the gold paint on the leg I think it gives it a subtle pop and matches the hardware. working with metal powder and resin is tricky from what I understand, I’ve stayed away from it for a reason lol. Maybe look at people who make props for cosplay I believe they might have some tricks for you as it’s a great way to make things look metal but be light enough to carry all day at a convention. Mando looked so handsome on the little drawers at the end, give him a big hug for being such a purrfectl lil assistant and model.
I think your instincts are good; when you had finished the dresser and before you stained it, it just looked like an unfinished piece of furniture. The light stain and waxing brought out the simple beauty of the piece - a nice modern homage to art deco style. I appreciate you sense of humour throughout the video! I see you are always trying to improve yourself in all aspects of life, and sharing it with us!😄
Final results turned out very pretty! Personally, I prefer darker stains, but I can appreciate lighter wood and it’s certainly much better than before! And let’s be honest, Mondo can make any result look great! 😊
I’m glad you did the stain tint a bit darker. Much better. I love the feet gold and the hardware. You’re your own worst critic like most of us would be. I like the darker stains myself. This was beautiful. Love to see your beautiful cat and Hugo play well together 😂🇺🇸👍🏼
I think it turned out rather well. It is as you say different to your usual but it still looks good and it will always suit someone out there for their decor/space. I always love Mando peeping out of drawers and playing. He seems to like the neighbourhood cats too! Well done!🥰
As always, your restoration efforts resulted in a fantastic piece of furniture. This is a wonderful little piece! Personally, I like darker, richer finishes, but you are the master of your shop. You should continue to do what pleases you. I will continue to be impressed by your skills and your willingness to try new things.
It's a nice little chest of drawers, looks far better than it did at the start, and I rather like the lighter colour to it. Nicely done. (And your feline overlords looked like they were having a great time together... :) )
It reminds me of furniture that was very popular in the western part of the United States during the 1980s. Much of what I saw in clothing, furniture, and decor were very inspired by the art deco movement at that time. On the whole, Jay, I like what you did with it, but I do agree with you that it might have looked better with a darker finish.
The finished piece looks good. I love the handles! I personally prefer a walnut color on wooden furniture but I like trying new things and I like watching you experiment. Everything can be changed...you've showed us that, so why not try new techniques and finishes? ❤
I also don't love it . The video I did love. Your face, hawking face restorer, was priceless. "Bob's your Uncle", basement children, and experimentation were all great! One of my favorite videos, so far.
When I restore a little piece myself, I always try to get rid of the stained wood color and preserve the wood in it's natural beauty - like you did this time. A very nice color .. not stained brown .. very nice. 👍 very nice job !!

Aww...look at those lovely furbabies❤ Oh, sorry, the chest turned out beautifully, too! I do like the lighter finish but you should do things how you want them. Your judgement is always spot on
I love the two tone wood so naturally it would be lighter and darker either way you make it. I also think that if you had gone with a walnut color it would have made the brass simulated feet stand out more. Either way, you did a great job. Thank you for the skin tutorial, I think I might take you up on it. Mando is getting so big and seems to have a best friend with the cat next door. Love it 😂😅😊❤
That looks good Jay. Lots of work though, but it turned out a really useful piece of furniture. Thanks for sharing all your skills, and Mando ! Take care 🙂
Jay I gotta say the Foreo promo made my day. Totally unexpected and that impish look on your face totally cracked me up. Which was great because I’ve been pretty grouchy today. Not enough sleep last night. But I can’t help but wonder why people post comments critical of your artistic renovation decisions. I wonder if they think you care about their opinion. This video has 989 comments. I wonder if they think you read every one. Maybe they’re taking advantage of the fact that you’re a nice guy and won’t flame them. I suppose to be charitable I’ll just say that they’re not mindful. OK enough from me. /grouchy You replaced so much on this chest I was wondering when it stops being a renovation and becomes a rebuild. Maybe that’s just semantics but for some reason I think the distinction is important. I’m too tired to figure it out tonight but I’ve found that if I write things down my brain often works on them subconsciously and the next I come up with a solution or an answer. Small children in your basement?! 😱😄 12:00 Press fit FTW 👍 This was such a darn interesting video. It was great to see you experiment and try new things. Thank you so much! 😊
This reconstruction, while being simple, includes very important techniques, skills and explanations for the fans, and as always, it is enjoyable to watch this video.🤍💚
Much better than I thought, my mother was a fan of Scandinavian furniture, I love rather dark furniture in white painted rooms. but this came out really fantastic, I think the trick was the soft rounded contours without looking trully art decò, and the very elegant handles vertically set. Enchanting!
Mando is a great model and enhances your finished work. I do admire your patience and endurance with all the sanding etc to bring these sorry old bits of furniture to life again. Thank you.
I like it. Your choice of drawer pulls is great with the feet. Don't give up on those feet either. I wonder if a series of sanding and doing a thin layer of product would work? I know you love to sand.
Jay you are the artist in residence so you get to choose what YOU want to do. Unless Mando says otherwise of course. I too think of art deco as darker wood. This was one of many perhaps not your favourite but next week is another beginning.👏👏❤❤🥇🥇
You have an incredible talent and the right tools and access to the right wood! I would be scared to death to take something apart this much. Love love the kitties
Turned out very nicely. Looks fresh and smart, could fit in many places. The tint to the oil finish definitely worked better. The supervisors looked like they were having a good time.
I think you did a very nice job on this piece. I prefer darker wood too. This would be a nice piece in a beach home. I love the kitty shenanigans in the background. Mando has soooo much energy. He is so adorable.
I love everything except the framing/trim color. Enjoyed your video very much, Jay. Happy for you that you recently had a few nice, sunny days there in Australia! Always happy to see the kitties in your videos, too!
Jay, I love the color of driftwood, and have a suggestion, if you ever want to try it on another piece. Use a diluted grey paint, applied as you would a stain, as you do with a white wash. The grain will show, and the yellow/brown of the wood will be covered. I do love this little chest, you remade it into a gem!
I've become a light wood fan after decades of walnut & cherry adoration. 😂 This turned out very nice. 😍I loved your "commercial"! 😂🤩Made me almost decide to get one, but at my age, that's just pure wishful thinking. 😂😂Loved seeing Mando & Hugo playing. 😻😻See you next time, Jay. Take care. 😁😘🤗💖👌👍👋
Love your accent. The sound of French is why I chose to take French in 1967. Unfortunately I never could sound French. I hate cats and am allergic to many of them, but I have to say Mondo is the most awesome cat I've ever seen. Beautiful, so ADHD, and curiously intelligent. I guess he took after you. Ha.
Way to think outside the box! Not only did you save this piece from the landfill (can't imagine anyone else was going to buy it), but you managed to create something original. Bravo 👏👏👏
I really like this. Once the original veneer could not be saved, I personally think it loses a lot of its art deco character, so sticking with traditional stains is not necessary. I think this makes the best of what's left of the chest to make sure it has a new life in a new home for an decor style.
It turned out nicely. I really like the drawer pulls. I prefer a darker stain but the 2 tones of the lighter wood colors keep it from being “boring”. Another wonderful job! Bravo!
Jay, great job saving this one. However, Phyllis and I both agree with your feelings on the matter. A darker stain would have been more elegant and in our wheelhouse of "likes". We did like the Mondo accessory that was in the Final results. We are currently working on a 1940-1950 smaller chest of drawers that needed a lot of repair. Such fun when you have the time and patience. Take care and keep up the fabulous work and tips for us "unprofessional" folks. (2FunWoolyboogers)
Looks like you bought a set of beautiful handles, and the rest of the junk came with it. Well done ,love your videos, your personality, and attitude. Your cat is stunning,as well! All the best, keep up the great work, many thanks.
PS: Stop listening to the "light" wood people and stain it like you like~
I agree 😊
Exactly. Or whatever style will sell well. As a professional woodworker I lost count long time ago how many pieces I've done for people that I personally didn't like. If people want light colors they should give it a go themselves
I’m in the dark wood camp.
The light wood people should just buy the cheap laminate furniture and leave the wood to those of us who love it!
I love darker stains as well!😊

I love everything except the framing/trim color. Enjoyed your video very much, Jay. Happy for you that you recently had a few nice, sunny days there in Australia!
Always happy to see the kitties in your videos, too!
Congratulations, it’s beautiful! Also, I love how your little buddy and his playmate video-bomb so many segments!
Very interesting 🤔
Love watching Mando and Hugo play 😊
I think it looks really nice. I’m a darker wood person, but you did a great job!
Take care. 😁😘🤗💖👌👍👋
I love the final look of this sweet piece❗👍❤️. It's a little bit of whimsy with classy finishes 😊
Ha.
So much better than before. I like it as well. 😘🌹😁
Way to think outside the box! Not only did you save this piece from the landfill (can't imagine anyone else was going to buy it), but you managed to create something original. Bravo 👏👏👏
I think the color of the legs corresponds to the handles. I like how you transformed this cabinet !!!👋👋👋
I really like this. Once the original veneer could not be saved, I personally think it loses a lot of its art deco character, so sticking with traditional stains is not necessary. I think this makes the best of what's left of the chest to make sure it has a new life in a new home for an decor style.
An excellent job. I like it a lot! I like dark wood furniture too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I really like the result and the vertical handles are a great idea. ✨️
Thanks so much! 😊
WOW Jay ! I’d buy it. I believe you did a remarkable job on it. By the way, your yard looks really nice. See you next time, Joyce ❤️🙏🇺🇸
It turned out nicely. I really like the drawer pulls. I prefer a darker stain but the 2 tones of the lighter wood colors keep it from being “boring”. Another wonderful job! Bravo!
It looks lovely, also Mando playing always makes me smile.
I think it turned out nicely! Even the legs looked good! Nice job Jay!
I actually liked this drawers transformation. Keep up the good work, you're doing as great as always
I like it. I think your treatment of it is true to its Art Deco design. I'm glad you didn't darken it, the pale blond is very elegant.
Thankful for Midwest magic cleaning recommending your channel ❤
I think it turned out nice! You did a great job. And of course it also helps that Mando models the piece at the end!! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
