A book I read had a few pieces from those teens, it was common for teens that age back then to be taken under the wing of a commander especially when their poor and can’t afford much else like the kid in the book, they eventually replaced the commanders if they survived and if they learned enough to do good strategy’s

i always say, despite no teaching degree, i could get them to be much more intrigued than any teacher trying to do so in regular school. i'd take the history text book and throw it in the trash and use the more interesting unknown tid bits. trying to drill in the political BS of WW1/2 without end will only reinforce their belief. you have to make them WANT to learn it, ad this band is a great way to do it. plus any other little unknown tid bits of my own.
One real sad reality here is that the England that these tragic young men fought and died for, in large part, no longer exists. I feel sure they would be appalled to know this.
They died for a selfish and cruel empire that went to war to uphold treaties with petty kings and tyrants and despite the modern nations shortcomings the sacrifice of those young men paved the way to a Britain that will never repeat that mistake again.
Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead wrote "1916" after watching a documentary on the Battle of the Somme where a veteran of the battle talked about holding his best friend as he died. The Motorhead version is very stripped back, while this is more epic and Sabton has included soldiers from throughout history who fought and died for their homelands. Both versions are incredible and I feel complement each other nicely. A fitting tribute to both Lemmy and those who gave all for their countries. RIP, you are all missed and appreciated. The two images that always get me are the soldiers marching off into the mists of history and the young soldier at the end, standing in the middle of the desolation, glancing at the sky as if asking God why. Really worth watching is the Making Of documentary for this video. As you said it was a nice touch to credit everyone involved. In addition all the soldiers depicted are based on real people throughout history and their names are given in the credits. My grandmother’s older brother (Harold Brown) was 14 the first time he tried to enlist. After a second failed attempt he finally succeeded in 1918 (still only aged 16), fortunately the war ended not too long afterwards.

The Battle of the Somme started 53 years, possibly to the minute, after the Battle of Gettysburg which became the bloodiest battle on American soil. The Somme Offensive succeeded in relieving pressure on Verdun which led to a French victory there. Those men did not die in vain.
I did some researching and found that all the names of the soldiers, knights and Spartans in the end were real people. Many of the soldiers were Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Victoria Cross or Croix de Guerre recipients. The soldier pulling himself out of the mud, at first I thought he was a member of "The Smoking Snakes" (Força Expedicionária Brasileira, FEB, nicknamed Cobras Fumantes), but doing some more research with the patch on his shoulder as well as his helmet, that's Sgt Henry Johnson of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, aka "The Harlem Hellfighters". Medal of Honor recipient and recipient of French Croix de Guerre avec Palme, France's highest award for valor. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 2015. Sgt. Henry Johnson is "one of the five bravest American soldiers in the war." Theodore Roosevelt Jr. in his book "Rank and File: True Stories of the Great War" The Asian soldier with the cocked-hat, that's a Nepalese Gurka named Havildar Gurung (per the credits) who earn the Victoria Cross in the Burma campaign off WWII. Sgt Awal Nur, who did a secret mission over the Himalayas. Lt. Audie Murphy, Sgt. Alvin York are both medal of honor recipients from WWI (York) and WWII (Murphy). I also notice a soldier with the Croix Lorraine on what looks like a French flag arm band, meaning he was a member of the 'Forces françaises libres' forces in WWII. Doing some reading I found out that a large number of French colonial troops from territories such as Chad had joined with the 'Forces françaises libres'. I suspect that soldier is Lt Comba, but I can't find anything on him. As I've been working my way through the names listed in the credits and found another one: Private George Stringer, Manchester, Awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Es Sinn in Mesopotamia. Capt. Dobson, 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, Killed on 9 July 1916 in Flanders.

But they can get other duties such as technical, medical or sitting in a bunker, like their father did (he's an engineer). But all 18 year olds, girls and boys, will be called here in Sweden. Of course I don't want to see them on the battlefield. On the other hand I will encourage them to do whatever they can for the safety of the Kingdom of Sweden. For our democracy and freedom. For our neighbors and allies, since we now are members of NATO. We have an ongoing war close by, in Europe. Now I don't believe that we will have a war within our borders in nearly future, but we still need to be prepared.
Those 'Boy's" back then were a lot older than today's 16 year old's. Many had hard and dangerous jobs working in the coal mines. The youngest English Soldier who lied about his age and served with distinction twelve-year-old Sidney Lewis. He fought in this Battle. That generation is very different that the ones today. Now it's all about me. I do not mourn for those lost but I thank God Men like them existed.

Great video, i don't mean to assume but im guessing your American so not to patronise for many brits especially those who in the North of England (the county's of Lancashire and Yorkshire and more)this hits hard because there was a known belief that at the Somme that of course 'they sent the northern boys in first' because high command deemed these young men as uneducated and simple-minded so they were too stupid to know what awaited them and some were as young as 14 but they still tried to do what they could for King and country. Still great reaction and as a brit im glad that others know what happened at the battle of the Somme.
No I'm actually not American. I'm Canadian who is now living in the US (my husband is American) and I'm the daughter of a Brit 😊 I try to educate myself on these things as much as I can. It goes without saying, that War is Nightmare fuel, and nothing like what we see in Movies, but sometimes we need to be reminded of what war is really like. As a sitenote, in Denmark, there have been passed a Law where Women will be drafted and have to serve in the Army just like Men, this will start after next election. I agree with you 100% It's the outrage culture because kids have it so good now that they have to find something to "fight for". We see it the most with college kids who think they know more than everyone else, but are just parroting what they've been fed and can't think for themselves.
Times change, it is just inevitable. Yeah, some kids today are what older generations call soft. But kids today did not grow up with the hardships that kids back then did. If you do not experience something for yourself it is hard to understand that hardship. Personally, I would never want my son to have that experience, to have to go into battle because some noble was killed and all of the sudden the world must destroy itself. I want him to be 'soft', not have a hard life and a harder heart. If the price I pay for my son to be alive and healthy is that he gets petulant from time to time because someone said something he didn't like then I will put myself on that altar. I am in my early 50s right not but even in the 70's I did not have the experiences of my mom, who grew up in the 1950s in a sharecropper family. And in their own time, kids today will complain about kids tomorrow. It just happens.
Ya have to respect Sabaton for their interest and ability to bring the history and the horrors of war to us today. They are truly a gift to us all. Peace be with all combat veterans on all sides.
Actually, the deadliest battle in history was the Battle Of Stalingrad in WW2. The Battle of the Somme was one of the deadliest, but not THE deadliest.
I respect Saboton's version, but prefer Motorhead's. Lemmy conveys a 16yr. old eager to defend his country, but frightened to lose his life when the moment arrives. Joachim conveys a viking warrior proud and brave to die on his shield.

Australia's total population at the time was about 4 million, and the 416,809 who enlisted for service represent 38.7 per cent of the total male population aged between 18 and 44. Of these, an estimated 58,961 died, 166,811 were wounded, 4098 went missing or were made prisoners of war, and 87,865 suffered from sickness. A small contribution pfft! This is heart breaking for a small nation, this is why the Aussie flag is flying in a Sabaton music video clip they know the deal. The soldier pulling himself out of the mud, at first I thought he was a member of "The Smoking Snakes" (Força Expedicionária Brasileira, FEB, nicknamed Cobras Fumantes), but doing some more research with the patch on his shoulder as well as his helmet, that's Sgt Henry Johnson of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, aka "The Harlem Hellfighters". Medal of Honor recipient and recipient of French Croix de Guerre avec Palme, France's highest award for valor. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 2015.
Sgt. Henry Johnson is "one of the five bravest American soldiers in the war."

The Asian soldier with the cocked-hat, that's a Nepalese Gurka named Havildar Gurung (per the credits) who earn the Victoria Cross in the Burma campaign off WWII.

Lt. Audie Murphy, Sgt. Alvin York are both medal of honor recipients from WWI (York) and WWII (Murphy).
I also notice a soldier with the Croix Lorraine on what looks like a French flag arm band, meaning he was a member of the 'Forces françaises libres' forces in WWII.
Doing some reading I found out that a large number of French colonial troops from territories such as Chad had joined with the 'Forces françaises libres'. I suspect that soldier is Lt Comba, but I can't find anything on him.
As I've been working my way through the names listed in the credits and found another one: Private George Stringer, Manchester, Awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Es Sinn in Mesopotamia.
Capt. Dobson, 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, Killed on 9 July 1916 in Flanders.

That's so insane to me. I can't imagine my son going to war. He's still a baby to me! Boys lied about their age to enlist...Now grown men get offended if you misgender them. It's a different world we live in.

But they can get other duties such as technical, medical or sitting in a bunker, like their father did (he's an engineer). But all 18 year olds, girls and boys, will be called here in Sweden. Of course I don't want to see them on the battlefield. On the other hand I will encourage them to do whatever they can for the safety of the Kingdom of Sweden. For our democracy and freedom. For our neighbors and allies, since we now are members of NATO. We have an ongoing war close by, in Europe. Now I don't believe that we will have a war within our borders in nearly future, but we still need to be prepared.

Those 'Boy's" back then were a lot older than today's 16 year old's. Many had hard and dangerous jobs working in the coal mines. The youngest English Soldier who lied about his age and served with distinction twelve-year-old Sidney Lewis. He fought in this Battle. That generation is very different that the ones today. Now it's all about me. I do not mourn for those lost but I thank God Men like them existed.

So much respect for sabaton. Their are legions of idiots out there foaming at the mouth for the adventure of war. Sabaton tries to honor those that went to hell. While trying to convince others. I would say the lucky ones took a direct hit from a massive howitzer on their first day and were done.

When I first made it to Afghanistan, the first thing that got into my mind was that I might run out of water, but thankfully didn't, but instead ran out of morality. The Afghans were skilled fighters, and every night, I held my M4A1 by my side in case of a night attack

Great video, i don't mean to assume but im guessing your American so not to patronise for many brits especially those who in the North of England (the county's of Lancashire and Yorkshire and more)this hits hard because there was a known belief that at the Somme that of course 'they sent the northern boys in first' because high command deemed these young men as uneducated and simple-minded so they were too stupid to know what awaited them and some were as young as 14 but they still tried to do what they could for King and country.
Still great reaction and as a brit im glad that others know what happened at the battle of the Somme.
No I'm actually not American. I'm Canadian who is now living in the US (my husband is American) and I'm the daughter of a Brit 😊 I try to educate myself on these things as much as I can. Those children were just insignificant peons to the war machine. It's a tragedy that should have never happened. I feel the same way about war now tho. So much human loss so that it keeps the military industrial complex going. 😞
It goes without saying, that War is Nightmare fuel, and nothing like what we see in Movies, but sometimes we need to be reminded of what war is really like.
As a sitenote, in Denmark, there have been passed a Law where Women will be drafted and have to serve in the Army just like Men, this will start after next election. I'm think Sweden have something similar but I'm not certain.
And you are absolutely correct, todays generations will be known as the generation that got offended on other behalf, sorry this is not to be polical but its just rubs me the wrong way.

I agree with you 100% It's the outrage culture because kids have it so good now that they have to find something to "fight for". We see it the most with college kids who think they know more than everyone else, but are just parroting what they've been fed and can't think for themselves.
Times change, it is just inevitable. Yeah, some kids today are what older generations call soft. But kids today did not grow up with the hardships that kids back then did. If you do not experience something for yourself it is hard to understand that hardship. Personally, I would never want my son to have that experience, to have to go into battle because some noble was killed and all of the sudden the world must destroy itself. I want him to be 'soft', not have a hard life and a harder heart. If the price I pay for my son to be alive and healthy is that he gets petulant from time to time because someone said something he didn't like then I will put myself on that altar. I am in my early 50s right not but even in the 70's I did not have the experiences of my mom, who grew up in the 1950s in a sharecropper family. And in their own time, kids today will complain about kids tomorrow. It just happens.
