You should play the 4 first games of Silent Hill. I promise you that even though the games have outdated controls and graphics, they top modern games with their plots, symbolism, and how they choose to scare you. If I have to choose Resident Evil, a horror franchise that have existed since the late 1990s, between Silent Hill first four games, I would choose Silent Hill anytime

I had that exact same reaction, except I already knew that real psychological horror died the day Five Nights at Freddy's came out, so I already knew about Silent Hills' unfortunate yet predictable fate. I sure hope Metal Gear Solid V will live up to expectations, despite Hideo Kojima's love-but-mostly-hat relationship with Konami. I also hope that Guillermo Del Toro will be okay with his decision to no longer be involved with video games and just stick to creating even more of his unique movies, knowing that he will learn a few things from Kojima whenever necessary. It's times like these that I imagine what would happen if things turned out differently.
You play as Harry, the best father in the world. This man traveled through hell and back as a single father just to find out his little girl was safe. No matter how many times he was cut he shook off the wounds and proceeded. And he took in his daughter. That is what this song symbolizes.
It was sad when he died in Silent Hill 3, and Cheryl's reaction made it even more sad. He was an amazing character in the series that never gave up no matter how terrifying or painful the circumstances were. Definitely one of the best horror protagonist of not one of the best protagonists in general ever in a game.

The game actually cleverly confronts the unlimited love from an father to his adoptive daughter, with the hatred and pain of a mother towards her biological daughter. Showing how little love has to do with being related in blood. Both of the children are two different parts of a same person (Alessa/Cheryl), which I think is symbolically strong and solid. One was raised with love while the other one was raised with pain and torture.

It's weird, I've never played a single silent hill game but am familiar with its entire history. It's a series that has facinated me from about age 10, reading about it in gaming magazines. I hope one day to experience it in it's full glory. And that it returns to its rightful place in gaming history.

This song ultimately is the perfect representation of the town. You have to go through the jarring, damned town and face your demons. Once on the other side, you are better off than if you never came through at all. Stopping a crazed cult is a plus too I suppose...

_Silent Hill_ is _not_ about "facing your demons". The town does not reflect Harry's soul but Alessa's. The themes explored aren't about confessing sins and being cleansed. They're themes of parenthood, of the fear that you can't protect your child from life, from the risks they inherit just by being born.
For fuck sake, that initial mandolin tremolo thing riff always scares me the fuck of out me, like if it tells a horrible story, depressing and ominous, but then develops into a song of unmatched beauty, sad, but beatiful.

Silent Hill, especially the early ones, were filled to the brim with bleakness and darkness. However they ultimately end with messages of hope and redemption, which I think makes them infinitely more meaningful than a lot of Horror Games.

Mona Lisa is probably Leonardo depicting himself as a woman. There's really nothing too great about it. It's overrated. It is promoted because of the bad message in it, just like "The Last Supper" which has Satan in it when you use mirrors as Leonardo intended.

Do not play any other Silent Hill game rather than "Silent Hill 1-4". Everything else (excluding "Silent Hill 2 Director's Cut") is pure shit. 2. Play the PC versions of the games they are the best way to play them, if you can stand the shitty controls those ports had and some minor bugs. Playing on a emulator is a pain in the ass, believe me, I did it, and the lag destroyed my experience, then I tried the PC ports, no regrets. 3. GET AWAY FROM HD COLLECTION, DON'T TOUCH THAT, IS BAD, BAAAAAD AS HELL ITSELF, STAY AWAY FROM THEM AS FAR AS YOU CAN, DO NO PLAY THOSE VERSIONS, THEY WILL JUST GIVE YOU A BAD EXPERIENCE OF TWO OF THE BEST HORROR GAMES EVER CREATED. Nikephor P.T. introduced me to Silent Hill, but didn't make me want to try the series. It just made me excited to see a horror game that relies on atmosphere and not stupid jumpscares. I wanted to play Silent Hill after seeing gameplay of the original.
Something that I love about Silent Hill is that some of their songs from their soundtracks are actually "not horror-like". While some of the songs like "Betrayal" and subsequently "Blank Fairy" fit the horror atmosphere from SH2, but there are also songs (like the original main theme above, "Theme of Laura", "You're Not Here", etc) that are upbeat and positive when outside of context to the games so that they're inclusive to people that aren't into/can't get into the horror genre but can get into the songs regardless!
Played the game first in '99 after reading good reviews in a magazine, i was 9 years old. got stuck in the piano puzzle and asked "older cool dude at school" for tips and then left the game due to a magikarp attention span...like vagrant story and crono cross played it again as an adult, and realised how a masterpiece this game is.
Whenever it’s a foggy day, this song always comes to mind. Plus I lived in the town where the Silent Hill movie was filmed and remember seeing them film there.

Silent hills is one of those stories that comes around once and again, that is so unique and stands alone in its own tier (like Dead space and movies like Panorum and The Thing) just amazingly original and well written.
I played silent hill 1 when it first came out and I love it. I wasnt a fan of horror games back then, there was only RE1 and SH1 but Sh1 is just it just gets into your soul and lives within you. I've been a fan until SH4, I didnt finish SH4 because it was just too scary

The intro of this song used to freak me out as a kid. Something about the fast, disorienting strings mixed with gentle plucks of a guitar. Kojima tends to be great whit characters... He doesn't simply cast who ever's hot just to bring in the profits. He brings in who ever he believes can pull of the character. And no... It's not Harry. It's not a remake. It's a reboot of the series. So we don't know who Norman is playing... We haven't seen near enough to judge hes character yet. I say you should give the guy a chance... Because there is nothing to indicate we have anything to fear from this casting.

There is something about this series that makes it different from all the other horror games (well at least the first 3 games). Silent hill is the kind of game that makes you question your own sanity and I love it. I also love the mystery and the plot to it. But alas, Silent hills was born. Everyone thought this would've not only been the best silent hill game, but the best horror game ever created. If people got THAT exited over a playable TRAILER, boy would have it been a great game. I can't believe they would just cancel something like that. Because of this I just feel like Silent hill is dead. A new game hasn't been announced in years, and I really don't want this series to just die. I hope... MAYBE one day we can get an actual good silent hill game, HELL we would be lucky to even get a silent hill game in general.

This game is true art. You cannot replicate the feelings it evokes in modern horror games no matter how much you try just like you can't replicate the Mona Lisa.
Mona Lisa is probably Leonardo depicting himself as a woman. There's really nothing too great about it. It's overrated. It is promoted because of the bad message in it, just like "The Last Supper" which has Satan in it when you use mirrors as Leonardo intended.

it's to show off the tech, not the game since it was more like a tech demo since PT stands for "playable teaser" so it might be interline different expect for the view and graphics.
Kojima even said the graphics and other details were scaled back to achieve the 'indie feel' they wanted for the whole P.T thing.

The worst part is that I decided I was going to buy a PS4 for Silent Hills. I didn't like ANYTHING that involved horror prior to PT, but PT alone made me want to be a horror fan. Now Konami pulls this shit.

So, you are telling me that you entered to the Silent Hill series thanks to P.T.? Really? I mean, you know that game was made the way it was made to simulate a shitty indie horror game? It was more of a test on people to ser their reaction to "modern horror". Anyways, what is important is that you entered the series, just remember this 3 simple rules:
1. Do not play any other Silent Hill game rather than "Silent Hill 1-4". Everything else (excluding "Silent Hill 2 Director's Cut") is pure shit.
2. Play the PC versions of the games they are the best way to play them, if you can stand the shitty controls those ports had and some minor bugs. Playing on a emulator is a pain in the ass, believe me, I did it, and the lag destroyed my experience, then I tried the PC ports, no regrets.
3. GET AWAY FROM HD COLLECTION, DON'T TOUCH THAT, IS BAD, BAAAAAD AS HELL ITSELF, STAY AWAY FROM THEM AS FAR AS YOU CAN, DO NO PLAY THOSE VERSIONS, THEY WILL JUST GIVE YOU A BAD EXPERIENCE OF TWO OF THE BEST HORROR GAMES EVER CREATED.
With that said, enjoy your stay at Silent Hill.
I personally prefer SH2 on the ps2, but I think thats mostly goes down to the feeling of first playing it.
Nikephor P.T. introduced me to Silent Hill, but didn't make me want to try the series. It just made me excited to see a horror game that relies on atmosphere and not stupid jumpscares. I wanted to play Silent Hill after seeing gameplay of the original.

Something that I love about Silent Hill is that some of their songs from their soundtracks are actually "not horror-like". While some of the songs like "Betrayal" and subsequently "Blank Fairy" fit the horror atmosphere from SH2, but there are also songs (like the original main theme above, "Theme of Laura", "You're Not Here", etc) that are upbeat and positive when outside of context to the games so that they're inclusive to people that aren't into/can't get into the horror genre but can get into the songs regardless!

Played the game first in '99 after reading good reviews in a magazine, i was 9 years old. got stuck in the piano puzzle and asked "older cool dude at school" for tips and then left the game due to a magikarp attention span...like vagrant story and crono cross
played it again as an adult, and realised how a masterpiece this game is.

Whenever it’s a foggy day, this song always comes to mind. Plus I lived in the town where the Silent Hill movie was filmed and remember seeing them film there.

Silent hills is one of those stories that comes around once and again, that is so unique and stands alone in its own tier (like Dead space and movies like Panorum and The Thing) just amazingly original and well written.
I played silent hill 1 when it first came out and I love it. I wasnt a fan of horror games back then, there was only RE1 and SH1 but Sh1 is just it just gets into your soul and lives within you. I've been a fan until SH4, I didnt finish SH4 because it was just too scary

The intro of this song used to freak me out as a kid. Something about the fast, disorienting strings mixed with gentle plucks of a guitar. At the time I didn't know what the song was from as I had only heard it from a top 10 scary moments in videogames video lol. Now silent hill is one of my favourite horror series.

He was one of the most interesting characters on the show. He still is... Sure he acts cold at times. But that's hes character. Hes meant to be cold... Daryl just isn't to good whit emotions. So why express them? So don't know where you get these fears from... From the trailer? In the trailer we simply see him walking, then looking behind him and then keeps on walking. You get no idea of what hes character is like. You asume to much to fast... All i know is that they've cast an Amazing actor in reboot made by one of the best game directors out there. Kojima tends to be great whit characters... He doesn't simply cast who ever's hot just to bring in the profits. He brings in who ever he believes can pull of the character. And no... It's not Harry. It's not a remake. It's a reboot of the series. So we don't know who Norman is playing... We haven't seen near enough to judge hes character yet. I say you should give the guy a chance... Because there is nothing to indicate we have anything to fear from this casting.

Not too long ago I discovered the Silent hill series, I fell in love with it instantly. There is something about this series that makes it different from all the other horror games (well at least the first 3 games). Silent hill is the kind of game that makes you question your own sanity and I love it. I also love the mystery and the plot to it. But alas, Silent hills was born. Everyone thought this would've not only been the best silent hill game, but the best horror game ever created. If people got THAT exited over a playable TRAILER, boy would have it been a great game. I can't believe they would just cancel something like that. Because of this I just feel like Silent hill is dead. A new game hasn't been announced in years, and I really don't want this series to just die. I hope... MAYBE one day we can get an actual good silent hill game, HELL we would be lucky to even get a silent hill game in general.
