    I would dig a small trench around the border and put some battens in, 4x2 or even 3x2. Wackaplate your ground down nice and firm then do a final skim over to level off make sure it's nice and firm & level... THEN put your membrane down & turf it and nail your turf into the battens. The battens will hold the nails better and because you walk plated the ground down, you don't have to worry about high/low spots in your turf after a year when the rains come in.
    This looked like a good DIY for a quick job where you won't see much activity on the grass - but if it's going in the back yard where kids will kick a ball... definitely need to compact that ground!

      When I can see wrong with this, and I am not a professional, I am a extreme analytical person. You need a smooth surface 4 the perf to sit on. I would agree with pudding the weed barrier under the layer of rocks and sand, followed by another layer of weed barrier, then topped with the turf. That's just my thinking.🤔

    I wanted to do this at my lake house. We’re away for weeks at a time sometimes because it’s not my primary residence. The yard is on a slope surrounded by heavy woods. It’s been hard to grow real grass and this past weekend I almost stepped on a snake. So a few months ago I inquired and the yard is tiny and the contractor wanted $28,000 for the job. Insanely over priced. DIY scares me a bit because if I screw it up it’s a massive loss. Any ideas?

    Excellent video.
    One question: how low should be the bottom of the artificial turf compared to the deck?
    I mean, if it's the same level, the grass leaves would be about 3cm above the deck and I think it would hold dust and everything else that comes from the deck.
    But if it's about 3cm lower, people could stumb on the deck.
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    • @bubbleblonde9600
      @bubbleblonde9600 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you think that it is going to hold dust xcetera because it's above the level of the concrete. If you lower that turf, where do you think the dust and dirt is going to go?
      BTW I do not know of any yard where the grass is lower or level to the concrete.

    • @OfftoShambala
      @OfftoShambala 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same question. I plan to do a test to see where I think it would create the least amount of tripping hazard and the top of the blades will be above the adjacent walking surfaces, I expect. And this will prevent some of the run off debris from ‘pooling’ along the edges of the lawn. It would be good to keep a ‘natural’ area on one side of a walking surface for those of us who like to blow or sweep debris off the edge, but if this is not possible, I would suggest that a person just use a dust pan and sweep frequently to prevent that build up of debris on the edge of the lawn.

      @@Skipbo000 I don't know what you do for a living! But if I was to bet on it, I don't think you install fake turf for a living. The debate that I have with this explanation of yours, that if the turf is laid on cement versus the ground , that it is hotter. What would make it hotter? The sun does not see the cement. The cement is a lighter colour then the ground, therefore not absorbing the heat as well. If you walk on the sidewalk, then take a walk in your garden, which is hotter?

    How to make the install look fake. Why is it that every installer fails to understand that real grass has a mow edge to it. So in failing to have any appreciable raised grass edge above the sidewalk or other concrete surface, it looks fake for the simple reason that real grass doesn’t grow at or below the concrete walkway, sidewalk, etc. And then there is “lets make the surface as flat as a billiard table...yeah..that will make the yard look natural, LOL. 90% of installers are blind to these tell tale signs of a fake grass install....I have absolutely no idea why. You want a natural looking install? Install Bend a Board almost level with the concrete surface, then staple the turf to it to give your turf the highest possible profile. And for god’s sake, crown the grade....and don’t cut straight seams. One last point: buying the high priced, really heavy weight dense turf is what creates a far more “carpet” like look then less expensive, lighter weight and less dense turf. Finally, avoid the high priced, dense green turf that’s three shades lighter than every lawn on the block. I wish turf manufactures would offer more of the lighter colored, less perfect, and arguably more realistic looking grass. Its that darker looking grass that just adds to the bad rep artificial turf suffers from.
