I love my turf since I installed it a few years ago... but... there are a couple of things I wish I'd known before hand. Turf doesn't absorb the heat like grass does. The synthetic material acts like a barrier reflecting sun and heat back up. In Texas the heat can be unbearable. Being outside mid-day is at times impossible because the reflected heat from the turm makes it stifling. Also, the smell for the first few months was hard. This stuff is rubber and plastic so it off-gasses. With my asthma it was a challenge but worth it. Additionally, no one talks about the fade and dulling factors or the slip factor. I couldn't afford to do the whole yard at the same time, though I'd purchased all the turf at once, it was the labor that killed me. When I installed the next section one year later there was quite a difference. Hi my friend, this is such a great, informative instructional video. Maintaining an actual live lawn is a lot of maintenance an can be expensive in the long run. I don't think I can install the same since I have two full grown trees in my front lawn & one of them has the roots protruding on the surface of the lawn so leveling the lawn as you explained might be tricky, I'll see if I can add some soil where the roots are to level that area, but anyway great video, love your dogs & the relationship you have with them & it's a blessing to have your father around to help you, wish I still had mine. Take care & many years of enjoyment with your new lawn.
I’m about to start my DYI project tomorrow and I learned a lot. My project is probably a quarter of your project but I really learned a lot. What kind of nails did you use? What brand Grass weed barrier and glue?
Thanks so much for watching and asking Ivan. In the description of my video there are links for all of the products that I used in this video. Let me know if you can't find them for any reason.
Questions: 1) how do you clean up any debris or leaves that fall on your lawn? Vacuum? 2) won't you or your pet accidentally ingest some plastic pellets when rolling around? 3) a bbq or passerby's lit cigatette would prob burn a hole. Patchwork is feasible? I've wanted this in a backyard, but first time I've seen a front yard with it. Nice job.
Great video one suggestion though. Cut all the rows with sod cutter. Get a day laborer, rent a dump trailer about $150.00 per day. Pay the dump fee for weight. Total cost probably $300. Bill it in the quote from the beginning. Save your back and wear and tear on your truck. I learned the hard way.
I sell artificial grass. My company also installs, when people ask me how to install turf, I send them to this video. This IS how professionals install grass. This is the right way.
Do you know how many inches you have to dig…I’ve read somewhere 2 inches , I watched the video twice but he didn’t mention how many inches of dirt to remove :/
Now you gotta do the same to the backyard lol I am definitely using this video as reference to do my front and backyard. Living in Arizona is too difficult to keep your lawn nice and green during summer. You have to use waay too much water. And just having rocks looks really boring. So I want the synth stuff that doesn't get damaged easily with the heat here but also doesn't get extremely hot with sun shining on it all day.
Had a good friends dad ask me today about artificial turf for his 30 by 40 front yard patch that he pays a lawn service to cut. Looks like the lawn man is about to lose a customer! Good Video!
Don't know how this stuff will make its way into the ocean from my house but I understand what you're getting at haha. I don't believe so since it is mean to remain on the lawn for proper weight distribution on the grass. I'll ask SmartTurf though. Thanks for watching Max and hope you enjoyed the video.
BYOT If it was plastic, the rain would wash it down. Like micro plastics in shampoo. One day it would end up in the ocean. But if its sand than its ok of course.
Looks like our space is about double yours… wondering the full cost, which isn’t too hard to calculate but I don’t remember if you mentioned how much of the staples & nails you needed for you space… I think I got figures for the rest… def saving this vid & hope to DIY this project myself! Thanks a TON!
excellent video! all the details I needed to know before considering taking on this project for a doggy play area in the backyard (where they have killed all living things and only a dessert of dirt remains)
This was great and I am making this my summer project starting in a week. This was so helpful. My yard isn’t as big but how long did it take you for this project? Also is there other artificial grass options that the company you used has?
At 2 in deep a cubic yard of material(mulch) will cover 162 square feet. You have 810 square feet. However because you're doing a small Stone it doesn't cover the same as a mulch or a larger Stone. So the ratio is slightly off when you look at charts online. Cubic yard of mulch will cover more than a cubic yard of stone because the stone is more dense the pieces are smaller so it packed tighter. So when buying small Stone the ratio is a little smaller closer to 120 square feet. Same for dirt/loam.
My neighbors have been crying about how everything "stuck" on their synthetic crass. I tried to use a leaf blower for them but it useless lol. That's not mentioning the weird color when fall/winter comes, their front yard looks like a sore thumb.
Where is the bulk material calculator you said you would leave the link but do not see it. I am looking to install Smart Pet Plus turf for my project but not sure how to calculate how much crushed rock to order, that is why I was hoping to use your bulk material calculator. My project is 40ft x 6ft.
Quick note to anyone using plant killer. Be careful which kind you get because there are types out there that only work when absorbed through the leaves (or green part) of the plant.
2 questions @byot 1. Total cost of installation including materials? 2. You mentioned a calculator to help determine how much material you need- I don’t see that listed anywhere? Thanks!
Great video very detailed. Had 2 questions. Did you remove any sprinklers system ? And how much was the material cost ? Thank you in advance keep up the great content you just gain a new subscriber.
What was the size of yard and cost? I live in Massachusetts and have animals. So would you also consider smart turf? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ty
And 600lbs of plastic turf! And what's even worse, a good part of those plastic pelets would end up washed into the drainage and eventualy rivers and oceans!
I guess neither you nor Stormtrooper decided to calculate the amount of water saved vs the polypropylene used in this install. The environmental impact is in favor of artificial turf as opposed to watering every other day for eternity
@@GrecoRider Well, in his particular case, he stated in the video that the lawn wasn't watered before, so there was no environmental impact. Installing plastic grass kind of made things worse. I won't judge the guy for wanting his house to look nice, but there's no gain for the environment here.
@@mateusssssss567 I feel the same way but I can see how it would be better for the environment to use turf. And it’s not just “plastic” like forever lasting, turtle killing plastic. But it is a concern still! But no more mowing even if he had used an electric mower. Don’t need to do maintenance on the mower. No chemicals on the lawn to make it look better and to kill weeds. I don’t think the water usage is a good argument, not just because he didn’t use much water anyways. But also because water is good for the environment, but overwatering or using a lot of water puts a lot of strain on the environment when it comes to getting the water to the property. I’d feel differently if it was on a well but assuming he gets city water it would cost a lot too. But I feel like having natural grass would be better for plant life/insects/animals. For me I would want real grass, even if it doesn’t come out this “perfect”. I guess it really just depends on what the person wants or what they feel is best?
How is it holding up after 2 years? Does dog hair accumulate? What about when the dog takes a #2 in the yard, does it was away naturally or does it stay forever?
That was an awesome video, I didn’t realize until now how much work is involved to do this ‘ the equipment you need that you need to hire.New friend here 👍😍🙏😎

Can you imagine looking out your window and seeing your neighbor laying in their yard talking into a camera about his "grass" (turf) 👀😅😆🤣 they're probably jealous after this
Do you have any turf safe weedkiller recommendations? I've read most commercial weed killers contain chemicals that will discolor or burn the artificial grass.
Wow Bro! You did an AWESOME JOB on this diy video. There’s no doubt this video would definitely give someone everything they need to know about installing an artificial turf lawn. I had no idea that there was so much prep and items needed to do this correctly therefore I think I’m going with an Arizona DG landscape instead. That you for the great video. 😎👍🏼
You did a great job, lot’s of hard work. Weed barriers does a great job of keeping the stone from settling into the existing soil. As far as prevent ting weeds it will works for a short time until the turf captures organic materials, weeds will germinate above the barrier with time.
Hello! Excellent video. You tackle all the questions and potential problems with clear explanations and of course good videos. 1 question -- in many of the DIY artificial turf posts and videos and instructions it is advised that you use some manner of edge restraint to help make sure the edges don't come up -- especially in high traffic areas. Using pressure treated timber allows you to nail the edges along the wood. I noticed you used 5 inch nails at close intervals directly into the soil/sub-base. What was your thinking here and do you feel like the use of nails is sufficient to hold down the turf along the edges.
The nails are intentionally ungalvanized. Over time the nails will form rust in the crevices of the base material and actually lock the edge into place.

Second:People should support channels like this 👍
Third: Thanks for sharing with us
Supporting but he would probably get more support if he went back and addressed questions ... even if its just a comment with all the answers.
Wow. Had no idea it took that many steps to install. Great work.
didnt even add DG
@@esexavo what is DG?
@@teenice894 decomposed granite, Its like sand but harder, you put it on top of the base, roll it and its nice and smooth
@@esexavohe did but with the green material he used that as a replacement
@@Clark1748 the green material is called synthetic turf
Questions:
1) how do you clean up any debris or leaves that fall on your lawn? Vacuum?
2) won't you or your pet accidentally ingest some plastic pellets when rolling around?
3) a bbq or passerby's lit cigatette would prob burn a hole. Patchwork is feasible?
I've wanted this in a backyard, but first time I've seen a front yard with it. Nice job.
Very informative. We will not install ourselves but your information gives us questions to ask to find a good installer
Approximate cost for the whole project, please
Great video one suggestion though. Cut all the rows with sod cutter. Get a day laborer, rent a dump trailer about $150.00 per day. Pay the dump fee for weight. Total cost probably $300. Bill it in the quote from the beginning. Save your back and wear and tear on your truck. I learned the hard way.
How much was your project and what size area did you install it on? Thanks
@@SmartCapGroup I always recommend 4in, but at a minimum 2in. It mainly for good drainage.
Dude! That is sick!! Awesome job.
Great to hear Bradley and thanks so much for watching. Appreciate the support.
Great video. I went straight to your suggested turf site and ordered samples. I'll eventually get the materials from them. Thank You !
I do not have a house or any intention of a DIY faux grass project. But here I am enjoying myself nonetheless. Great video!
Hello, sorry to bother you, I am an Amazon seller, do you need free turf? We are currently engaged in evaluation activities need comments.
Now you gotta do the same to the backyard lol
I am definitely using this video as reference to do my front and backyard. Living in Arizona is too difficult to keep your lawn nice and green during summer. You have to use waay too much water. And just having rocks looks really boring. So I want the synth stuff that doesn't get damaged easily with the heat here but also doesn't get extremely hot with sun shining on it all day.
Has anyone else noticed that he uses "therefore" excessively? The content is good therefore I'll keep watching.
“Therefore appropriately”. All his videos get this comment.
Had a good friends dad ask me today about artificial turf for his 30 by 40 front yard patch that he pays a lawn service to cut. Looks like the lawn man is about to lose a customer! Good Video!
Is that plastic filling material biodegradable? Looks to me like pre-made micro plastics. Ready to flow into the ocean.
It is actually just really fine sand treated with green dye, and microband!
BYOT If it was plastic, the rain would wash it down. Like micro plastics in shampoo. One day it would end up in the ocean. But if its sand than its ok of course.
Best DIY I’ve found so far wow!!!!! Very detailed!!!
Beautiful. Lots of work and time. No wonder it costs so much. 😃
Right?! Haha! Thanks so much for watching Susie and glad you enjoyed the video. Hope you subscribed!
Danggg that is a lot of work
Once again great video! Really liked the drone shots you captured.
Greatly appreciate the continued support Ivo and YES the a drone is the best money I have spent in a while. Game changer with videography.
Looks awesome! I bet the wife wants the backyard done now.
This was great and I am making this my summer project starting in a week. This was so helpful. My yard isn’t as big but how long did it take you for this project? Also is there other artificial grass options that the company you used has?
I enjoy mowing the lawn once a week :-)
At 2 in deep a cubic yard of material(mulch) will cover 162 square feet. You have 810 square feet. However because you're doing a small Stone it doesn't cover the same as a mulch or a larger Stone. So the ratio is slightly off when you look at charts online. Cubic yard of mulch will cover more than a cubic yard of stone because the stone is more dense the pieces are smaller so it packed tighter. So when buying small Stone the ratio is a little smaller closer to 120 square feet. Same for dirt/loam.
wow this was an incredible video
My neighbors have been crying about how everything "stuck" on their synthetic crass. I tried to use a leaf blower for them but it useless lol. That's not mentioning the weird color when fall/winter comes, their front yard looks like a sore thumb.
EGO Electric broom
Where is the bulk material calculator you said you would leave the link but do not see it. I am looking to install Smart Pet Plus turf for my project but not sure how to calculate how much crushed rock to order, that is why I was hoping to use your bulk material calculator. My project is 40ft x 6ft.
Quick note to anyone using plant killer. Be careful which kind you get because there are types out there that only work when absorbed through the leaves (or green part) of the plant.
Wow! I wish turf lawns existed in the South. I’m from Tennessee and you just don’t see turf lawns. It’s a shame, they are beautiful. 💚
Beautiful 👏 ! Love your slow and methodical process and explanation! Ty
Great video, got me a diy project contacting smart turf at then end of this vid.
Way to go! Share pictures with us when you finish.
It looks absolutely beautiful! Hard work pays off!👍🌳🐕
@Dan S that's your opinion, mine is different!
Adding project cost and hours spent to description makes it more detailed and helpful..
Beautiful, nice job. Enjoying your vids from the Philippines
Great to hear carlito and thanks so much for watching. Love hearing I have fans in the Philippines :)
I guess this would be ideal for a smaller yard. It would take me four years to complete this project in my front yard.
Hard work pays off. Looks amazing, congrats! 👏👍✌
Dry true words mike. Thanks so much for watching and the support. Hope you subscribed.
This video convinced me to put regular sod. If i was younger maybe i could have done this.
Very Nice! Time to do the back yard now!!
What was the size of yard and cost? I live in Massachusetts and have animals. So would you also consider smart turf? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ty
Would love to know size of the yard and cost as well please
“Better for the environment”
*lays down 1.5k pounds of plastic pellets
@@GrecoRider what about all the round up???
How is it holding up after 2 years?
Does dog hair accumulate? What about when the dog takes a #2 in the yard, does it was away naturally or does it stay forever?
That was an awesome video, I didn’t realize until now how much work is involved to do this ‘ the equipment you need that you need to hire.New friend here 👍😍🙏😎

Thanks for the info, man. I have to do this in my back yard... those shorts are epic, by the way.
Amazing instructional video. Sound was perfect. The fast forward was timely. Explanation of how the equipment works and all the other details. Best turf replay idea I’ve watched.
Very thorough. No corners cut.
How much did this total project cost?
We have a calculator to help calculate for your area. smartturf.com/product/buy-cypress-point/

That Meriam Makeba background track warmed my heart 🇿🇦🔥🔥💯❤❤🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾❤❤❤❤
Dude, this was an ENORMOUS job.
Wow!! What was total cost?
the company itself was an sponsor
Best video on TH-cam about this subject
Can you imagine looking out your window and seeing your neighbor laying in their yard talking into a camera about his "grass" (turf) 👀😅😆🤣 they're probably jealous after this
Good job. Any suggestion for what to replace the vibrating compactor with?
Does the rain take away the fill that you added as final step?
Do you have to cap off sprinklers?
I would love to see an update. Nice job!
I'm thinking about doing this in a few test areas at my house and then on entire yard for future house. No mower or mowing, heck yes.
So cool.. let's replace all the trees with synthetic trees too.
Do you have any turf safe weedkiller recommendations? I've read most commercial weed killers contain chemicals that will discolor or burn the artificial grass.
Hey how much were materials for this size? Including this specific turf
Several questions about total cost, not 1 answer.🤔
Really appreciate the re-worked Mariam Makheba track at the end! A song very fitting🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
I enjoyed watching the process!
That’s a lot of work. Damn
love the videos bro, can you do an update on this?

You did a great job, lot’s of hard work. Weed barriers does a great job of keeping the stone from settling into the existing soil. As far as prevent ting weeds it will works for a short time until the turf captures organic materials, weeds will germinate above the barrier with time.
Weeds grow out of cracks in concrete, so nothing will stop them.
Awesome! Now just the back garden 😂
Fantastic... thank you... it looks like a putting green... phenomenal video
It would’ve been so much easier to just install irrigation. But looks great.
Wow it’s literally that simple 😅 thank you!! I have a small rectangular space I want to lay down soft grass and this was very helpful
FACT! Iam currently pulling those spikes!
