  • This was a day trip we took on our holiday in Devon in September 2024, on the Dartmouth Steam Railway & Ferry, then a wander around the waterfront at Dartmouth. Huge thanks to Seb for the tour of the cab of our steam train!

I’ve watched it twice in a row. Such a beautiful place. I thought my country was beautiful (Ireland) but yours especially around that area is stunningly beautiful. 😍. Casey Jones (Seb) was brilliant inviting you to the engine part. We have nothing like that over here. 😢. I love seeing the fires in trains. Sometimes I walk to the steam railway station in Totnes (sometimes known as Totnes Riverside) just to see the engines, though there also is a very nice cafe there & sometimes the Rare Breeds centre also send someone on to the station with an owl for everyone to see.

My 5 year old son is autistic and obsessed with trains, especially Victorian steam engines. We live in Pennsylvania and have an annual membership to the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum and the Northern Central Railway. We also frequent the Strasburg Railroad. He can tell you what all of the parts are, what they do, what different engines are called, what all the different workers’ roles are, etc. We take him on train rides almost every weekend and he is going to be dressed as a ghost train engineer for Halloween. Major train nerd and it’s so fun! Anyway, we watched this video together and he thought it was the most exciting thing ever and now he wants to ride this train. Thank you for sharing. :)

@@rubenskiii it used to be a fairly common practice for the driver and fireman to cook their breakfast in the firebox using the fireman’s coal shovel as a pan, but they had to use caution because if the fire started to draw it could cause the food items to fly off the shovel and into the fire. At one point in time the practice was banned because the food could be drawn into the boiler pipes and if that happened while the engine was in a station the smell of the burning food could be detected by the station staff as well as the customers, leading to complaints of no catering being available especially at more rural locations. During the change from steam engines to electric or diesel electric engines some engines actually had a small hot plate installed in the engine compartment to allow the crew to have their breakfasts, but as they removed the fire men from the cabs as supernumerary personnel the driver could not drive and cook at the same time so the hot plates were removed.

We also like to catch the Paignton to Exmouth Service train, and spend a day there. The scenery of Torbay and then the River Exe is worth the 1.5 hours on the train. Then the views from the Seafront at Exmouth is of the nature reserve at Dawlish across the river. It's great day out if you are feeling a little bit tired, with some great little shops and some very nice cafes and restaurants and pubs to have lunch both in the town and on the seafront.

This is the most diverse TH-cam channel I know of: foraging, cooking, scam baiting, and now steam railways. I think you need to up your game on engine terminology though. That there was the footplate, or cab. Also if you're in North Devon or West Somerset, I can highly recommend the West Somerset Railway. It's the longest heritage railway in the UK, and every station has something to get off and investigate.

What made you say that? Is this a particular video you’re not interested in? You can say that you know

My next door neighbours recently went on holiday in that neck of the woods, their favourite part of the holiday was the day they spent in Paignton!

Dear Mr Shrimp, please go to the train of lights near Christmas. It would make the most fantastic video!

I wish I had known you were there. I lived there for 10 years. The town gets bad press. Some lovely cafes and the harbour and the beach! And then next door is Goodrington!! But you are not in Paignton at all, are you.

I live in the south-west and regularly have to deliver to Dartmouth.
I often deliver to the pub next to the café you had lunch at and in the summer reversing down that lane is an absolute nightmare as it is so close to the cars boarding the ferry! Tourist normally look on in horror when I slowly reverse down there😂 great video and I completely understand when you nearly accidentally boarded the ferry don’t worry we’ve all been there!!

One time I went on a boat to Dartmouth & in the river mouth there are rocks & we scraped the rocks & the boat was holed in a small way. I think some passengers were a touch alarmed when this was announced but they then announced that it would take many hours for the boat to actually sink so we were dropped at the pontoon as normal before the boat went on to the repair place.

Compare this place to the likes of Great Yarmouth and Portsmouth and the likes......no contest! Beautiful, clean and picturesque.

P.S. Kingswear Castle was restored & plied on the Medway where I originate from. Some cable ferries do have props, the cables are for guidance, particularly useful in fast flowing water.

7:00 Dartmouth harbour somehow reminds me of Meersburg at Lake Constance.

I read "Dartmouth Waterslide" and now I am slightly disappointed that you didn't get to go to a steampunk water park.
