I'm a younger Gen X'er, born in the second half of the 70's, but I hit on all of those points.
We're the last generation that rode a bike everywhere to friend's houses. We're the last generation that grew up without cell phones and the internet. We're the last generation that learned to drive manual transmission vehicles. We're the last generation that learned how to speak to people by...actually speaking to people face to face. We're the last generation that thought it was cool to hang out at the mall on Friday and Saturday nights. We're the last generation to experience real pool halls. We're the last generation that learned that if (or when) you fell off of your bike, you get back on that damn thing and DO IT AGAIN. And finally, we are the last generation that didn't care what color someone's skin was, or what their sexual preference was. If they were cool, we liked them and hung out with them, end of story.

I had to watch the video a couple times first to take everything in but I definitely meet the criteria you laid out for a certified card carrying Gen X’er.
I just wanted to touch on the race thing. I would argue that the late 70s and 80s were the most tolerate we have ever been as a country when it comes to race relations. We weren’t as sensitive when it came to topics of race. We didn’t cry about every little joke or racial reference and ask for someone to be “cancelled”. We laughed at ourselves and didn’t take everything so seriously. I grew up loving James Bond, Peter Seller Pink Panther films, kung fu movies, and new wave music. Vice versa I had white, asian, and hispanic friends that watched the Cosby Show, every Eddie Murphy film, and loved R&B and rap.
We just kept it simple. As a kid growing up no matter what color you were if you liked Huffy BMX bikes, Atari 2600 games, watching Saturday morning cartoons and playing outside till dark you were considered cool. We didn’t care about anything else.

    • @GenXThinks
      @GenXThinks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Yeah, you nailed it man. I used to love watching Eddie Murphy movies and listening to Prince. They were our idols and icons and we didn't care what color they were. i grew up in a small Southern town in a mixed race neighborhood. we all had White Granny at one end of the street (my actual Grandmother) and at the other end was our Black Granny (Mrs Littlejohn). when either of them hollered, we all came running. that was 40+yrs ago and the entire crowd of about 15 kids still keep in contact on a regular basis and treat each other as our blood siblings from different parents.
it'll never be like that again in this country.

Being one of the first Gen-Xers, the 2 things I'm most thankful for are: #1. Having parents who, in between not talking to each other, actually taught me to take care of myself. From a very young age I was taught to cook, clean, do my own laundry, drive, etc. My mother told me "Don't expect a woman to do anything for you that you can't do yourself except give birth". OK Message received. #2. I will always tip my hat to all the Silent Generation and Baby Boomer musicians who gave us all the fantastic music that I grew up on and has become a part of my soul.

    • @JoPerry-by3wd

I love that you said you'd tip your hat, because after gen Xrs, nobody knows what that means. The first time a man tipped his hat to me I thought that was my entry to womanhood. I was not a little girl anymore, because a grown man tipped his hat to me! 🤭

You summed it up perfectly. I work in the public school system, (high school) and the kids literally ask me why I'm so "chill" compared to so many of the other teachers (millennials). I tell them it's because there's no point in freaking out over stuff. They laughed about Y2K. Then I showed them some old clips from the 70's saying we'd all be in an ice age soon. Then it was greenhouse gases and the ozone layer. Then Al Gore said we'd all be underwater long before now and all the polar bears would be dead. Not that long ago they said we had 12 years left. Well, we're still here, and they're still getting paid to scream. Except now they've gotten a little smarter and went to "climate change", so if it's hot, if it's cold, if there's tornados, floods, droughts, wildfires, tsunamis, hurricanes... and yes, I've even heard earthquakes mentioned, as being from climate change. I just say "Whatever" and don't want my taxes raised for the next "Crisis" to come along.

Almost cut my left thumb off (I still have the stitches 40+ years later in the tendon) and tore a hole in my palm climbing a fence in my teens (fetching a frisbee in HS that I threw, which went over a 10 or 12 foot fence). As you said, we've got scars. I remember when challenger blew. I was born in 1968 to young Boomer parents. I feel lucky that my parents were always in love and never had to divorce. Maybe it wasn’t normal for 1970s big cities, but in my hometown, marriage was still a lifetime thing. I grew up respecting my eld ers and being patriotic. Every Independence Day, I go back to 1976 and remember how patriotic the whole nation was. That wouldn’t happen again until 9/11.
I am sure lucky to be part of Generation X, having the music and tv/movies from the 1950s to the 1980s to grow up with. The new stuff is just a waste of time and energy for me. I’ve been a lifelong Beatles and Elvis fan. No one will ever top that music! And the Six Million Dollar Man will always be my favorite tv hero. Steve Austin could save the world from destruction every single week!

    We know who shot JR
Evil Kenieval was our role model.
We shot Cylons in our back yard.
    “Where’s the beef?!” We know!
We’re sending help immediately Mrs. Fletcher…
We sniffed “dittos” when our teachers passed them out.
We rolled our eyes when Fonzi jumped the shark.
    Beer can collections
Baseball cards in the spokes of our Huffy bikes
Statler and Waldorf (the two old men on the muppet show)
    Hee Haw
Just when we thought it was safe to go back in the water…
    Y2K bug
    Have a nice day!
    Playing “smear the queer”
    “Hey you guys!!!”
    “Dy-no-mite!!!”
Moose dropping ping pong balls on Captain Kangaroo
    Nanu Nanu!!!
Shag carpeting so deep your dog would get lost
    Wood paneling and wallpaper
Stealing wood from construction sites to build tree houses

I feel bad for people who haven't figured that out, but I don't believe they should have the ability to shut everyone else up. Being sensitive isn't the same as being happy and enjoying life.

The thing about us not caring is quite misunderstood I would say, of course I can't speak for all of us but I for one care deeply about real shit because I know what happens when things go too far because either I have seen it or the two generations before me have, young people in the western world today have no clue what struggle actually looks like, as a Finn who's grandparents fought both the Russians and the nazis in WW 2 on Finnish soil and who's parents had to move to Sweden with me in tow to build a life because of the lasting economic effects of the wars I certainly know both struggle and what to look out for, that's why I care and also why I'm very patriotic and like people from other countries who are true patriots because they get it, fake patriots I don't like, you know the sort that think they're the best at everything because they're from whatever country or region and looks down on others. What I don't care about was perfectly described by you in this video as with everything else you said, I think this is the second video of yours I catch and I'm liking it so you've earned a sub.

I have tried to be aware of the rest of the world since then. Even so, until recently I had no idea that Europeans considered themselves Generation X until recently. I thought it was a local thing. Gen X from Europe here and careful, US Gen X may be patriotic, but a lot of Gen X in Europe are not, especially the grandchildren of the Germans who followed the Nazis. The younger Generations sadly do not comprehend the guilt we carry (even though we were not even born at the time of the Holocaust). It’s a trademark of German Gen X to not be at ease at all with patriotism. We had to watch the mountains of bodies from Auschwitz and all the Horrors of that racial extermination every year from the age of 10 on. We saw things that the Nazis did that were so unspeakable, that some of us would faint in class. Our teachers* back in the day followed a curriculum to avoid another Holocaust from happening by trying to completely traumatize us with the abhorrent things that were done to humans and to make it very clear that we „only had the grace of the late birth“ (meaning we would most certainly have done the same) [Speech from the German Chancellor Kohl in the late 90ies]I was only grateful that the films we had to watch, made by the Allies and the Soviets who discovered the camps, had no smell. To see those things when you’re still a child and to have to suspect that your beloved grandparents who did not speak about the war could have been part of committing such atrocities, that takes every desire for Patriotism EVER and just breeds deep shame. I don’t regret the shock-therapy they did on my Generation for that, I‘d have prefered if we‘d been 14 rather than 10 before discovering what Mengele‘s (Head „Dr“ of the Auschwitz extermination camp)twisted mind thought of doing to innocent humans, especially children….(twins were his favorite lab rats for torture) and what can all be done to a human body, but ok. I prefer that than what they do nowadays…. So Patriotism? No, thanks.

I always wondered how modern Germans felt about the Holocaust. I hate to hear that you feel such personal shame, though it's not surprising. We in America never think of modern Germans in that light. We think of Nazis the way we think of Romans or Vikings. They were in the past and don't color our view of modern German people. Your country has done a lot of good for the world as well. You do have a right to be proud. My great grandparents were German immigrants and I am proud of my German heritage. @@GenXThinks well, sadly some folks in the older Generations think differently, the beast of racism and antisemitism is still very much alive. Same with the younger generations who did not have the same curriculum in school, and who are quite ignorant because of it. Some young ppl are even proud of their Nazi ancestors, which makes Gen X sick. Because of the Holocaust we invited a lot of immigrants into our country (to not be racist at all costs) and sadly those immigrants were/are from antisemitic cultures….for a long time it was quiet and jewish people, descendants of victims and survivors of the holocaust came back to Germany…the touching thing is that those who managed to flee still had beautiful memories of their home country (!!!) even after the government of that country tried to exterminate them! Their Grandchildren (Israeli Gen X) came to Germany to see the country of their ancestors. Jewish culture plays a big part in German culture, right down to the language, Yiddish is very similar to German and we use Yiddish words in German ( most people do simply not know that nowadays 😞). So until 2015 all was relatively quiet and the descendants came back and it was awesome. We also had strict laws in place for certain misbehaviors ( lying about the Holocaust was punishable by law, as doing the Nazi salute, Hitlers book was forbidden and so on.). But after Chancellor Merkel invited a lot of immigrants from antisemitic cultures into Germany (2015), the climate rapidly changed. Even the laws were changed! As a Gen Xer having gone through that curriculum at school ( and having been taught very well by my sweet Papà, who always harbored a huge love and deep respect for early Israel and the jewish culture), imagine my surprise when suddenly the older Generations (my Fathers Generation, the post war kids, who did not have our curriculum in school because a lot of their teachers had been Nazis in the war and there weren’t enough teachers left, so back in their days „nobody“ had been a Nazi and all was kept hush hush….silent Generation indeed) suddenly let their mask slip and showed that there still were antisemites in Germany! Not just the new arrivals, but the old post-war Germans! 😳😳😳 That was shocking and disgusting. Thankfully, my beloved Papà did not have to witness it.
Granted, some of them, others were like my Father. The younger Generations were not taught properly in school, because the curriculum that Gen X had to go through was deemed to be too brutal, also the „modern Germans“ bravely did not want to create problems with the immigrants 🤦🏻‍♀️. So now Germany is NOT SAFE for jewish people. If you show that you are jewish, you will be harassed and harmed. On one hand our government puts plaques in front of the houses of jewish people murdered during the Holocaust (as remembrance), on the other hand Politicians will also warn you not to wear a kippah or a star of David or anything that could identify you as jewish in public. 😳😞 (freedom of religion anyone?). It is true that the attacks on Jewish people or Synagogues are usually not done by Germans ( and I fear not for lack of wanting to, but because of age and cowardice). But we, who swore, who promised „never again“ have allowed to make this *country an unsafe country for jewish people yet again. Some Gen X Israelis decided to stay nevertheless. A lot fled, especially for their kids, because that is no way of living. What I am proud of is that the day after the Politicians said to „hide being Jewish in public“ a lot of my fellow German gentile (non jewish) Gen X friends went out on the street with kippahs, Stars of David and everything that had been said to not be worn. ❤️
What is sad is that there is a lot of confusion in the General Population about the State of Israel and the political decisions of that state and Judaism. Most people are blissfully unaware that no, not everyone who is Israeli is automatically jewish.
And a lot of ppl are too ignorant to realize that a lot of Germans that had to flee to Israel (the others fled to the US) because Hitler and his followers were exterminating the jewish people, were GERMANS and belong to our culture!!
Sorry for the novel, it is a subject that is very complex… thank you for your kind answer before 🙏🏼❤️
