    I've lost 50 and my wife lost 20 with I.F. It's been a God send for her PCOS and our insulin resistance. It's ok if we don't agree on everything. You guys still rock, love your opinions and experiences.

      They literally addresses this. They don't say it does work or you won't lose weight using IF. They say its not sustainable in the long term for most people & better used as a tool for behavioral changes

      ​@@Pap-yy1xfexactly right! It's kind of like the keto people. For 95% of people, it's not sustainable long term, and cutting out certain food groups does nothing but make people develop an unhealthy relationship with food and yoyo forever!

      It is part of me now. I rarely eat before 10. First meal is huge and almost half my daily protein. Working great for me.

    I was 44 and 330+ in 2020 - the opposite of healthy. Using intermittent fasting, counting calories (buy a food scale!), going low carb, and swimming helped me drop 120lbs. Fasting was a good way for me to be accountable to myself about what and how much I was eating. It was a catalyst for fat loss for me; more the learning the discipline to reduce what I didn't need. I've since moved to a more complete diet now, found this podcast, and gotten to the gym. I've kept the weight off since and I feel great!

    Um... I have lost 100lbs from fasting and have lost another 25lbs by adding weight resistance training. I never binged I eat plenty of protein and I'm satisfied.

      @pokemonfanthings4444 - Agree to disagree. I've dealt with countless people in my career and talk with people constantly who have success using it.
      But that doesn't mean it is for everyone either. People can use whatever strategy that works for them. But I will push back on the idea that IF doesn't work for fat loss/weight loss.

      Totally agree. The experts I listen to are well-versed in the science behind fasting as well as scientific and reliable studies. Fasting is not a huge money-maker. Fasting is free. There is little financial incentive for these experts to so passionately promote fasting. The hormonal and metabolic benefits can be incredible. Also, with the right fasting schedule, Human Growth Hormone increases. True fasting can be beneficial in multiples ways. Watch videos from Dr Mindy Pelz and Dr Jason Fung, to name a few. Normally I 100% trust these MindPump guys. But this is one area that they do not seem to have the science on their side.

    I lifted weights and did low volume cardio for years and only gained weight. Did build muscle but also tons of fat. I started IF a year ago and I lost 50 lbs. it is the ONLY thing that worked. Definitely disagree with you guys on this. Fasting and HIT has helped me lose fat. Im 42 and feel better than I did at 25.

    Bruhhh this is so personal to me.. i started my fitness journey a year and half ago.. it was all these group cardio sessions with intermittent fasting for at least 8 to 9 months.. which was a terrible idea.. yes i lost weight.. but then absolutely put on no muscle and at one point i was eating one meal a day.. felt absolutely exhausted throughout the day.. then i bumped into mind pump.. boy I've been loving my fitness journey.. working out 5 times a week.. I've gotten a bit stronger, i can see my body getting some shape, metabolism is good.. I'm consuming 2700 calories.. wow!! absolute gold mine this channel is.. i cannot thank y'all enough..
    Just to let you know.. i did not drink alcohol last weekend.. I'm feeling amazing 🤩

    I have lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks fasting. I have been busting ass in the gym and eating protein for 8 months straight. I didnt lose a pound of weight. I fast for a few weeks im down from 250 to 235. I already look better.

      Fasting imo is the best form of detoxification so the lover can convert fat into energy.
      I lost 100+ lbs from fasting.
      I do intermittent fasting daily and I don't count calories but I eat loads of protein.

      Good on you! It’s a great way for your body to convert that fat into fuel. You think our ancestors had access to food every day? No! They had to hunt for their food and I’m sure they went days without eating.

    I can see advantages and disadvantages to fasting. Fasting seems to reduce inflammation, which would help my workouts, but it can also cause fatigue, which would hinder my workouts. I appreciate you guys providing balanced information.

    i was fasting ( OMAD) and keto since 2016, and after watching your podcast and decided to start lifting and do 16/8 fast instead of omad, as meeting my protean goals HARD while doing OMAD lol
    thanks to you 3 your podcasts convinced me to start lifting for the first time ( am 56 years old and my first day lifting was august 1) been consistent ever since and as of September 1st first am switching my routine up etc

    New listener, found you guys while on a trip earlier this month. I love the content, I am 6'1" down 20 pounds to 253, still 33% body fat(according to my electric scale). I was cutting calories and trying to hit the treadmill daily when I first started a couple months ago. I listened to you guys and I started full body training 3 days a week and cut out the treadmill(still hit my 10k steps) 2 weeks ago and increased my calorie intake. I am hovering around same weight but have had multiple co workers comment on my stomach looking smaller and I feel better than before. Keep up the good work Thanks for sharing all this knowledge

    Been training 2 years and just had my long awaited shoulder operation 6 years waiting now it's all healed up im going to put what I learnt from you to the test and prove to my PT girlfriend full body 3 times a week works she has been thought the complete opposite and I will try my best to prove it thank you guys

    Thanks guys! Looking through some comments, I think this is the same as many other modalities, one-size does not fit all. However you can manage the calorie deficit, do that. At the end of the day, IF is just meal timing and you may or may not be in a calorie deficit over a day or week. More importantly, there really is no difference between eating windows with regards to your metabolism or recovery, ***if calories are equated***. Hitting your calories is where things get tricky, in my case getting 225g of protein and 3500 calories is much easier in 10-12 hours versus 6h but if I need a deficit, 8h eating window is easier than 12h. Also of note: research suggests that meal-timing can be aligned in ways to benefit circadian rhythm and ensure sleep is not disrupted by digestion so there are side-benefits to certain forms of IF beyond managing a deficit.

    Down 90lbs in 9 months doing IF. I’ve done IF on/off for 7 years now so I’d consider myself pretty advanced.
    With the right amount of discipline and commitment it can be very sustainable but I agree majority of people fall off. I’d still always recommend it for the other numerous health benefits. We weren’t created to eat 3, 4, 5, 6 times a day.

    Loved this episode. I have had a terrible relationship with food and my doctor did put me on Ozempic because I was prediabetic, high blood pressure, my blood sugars were steadily rising, I was getting close to 50 and about 100lbs over weight. Through watching TV shows about obesity and weightloss, I learned alot about my bad habits. I used to sit on the couch, binge watch TV and eat popsicles. No wonder I had no energy! I have made it a rule for me to be done eating at 7pm every night and don't allow myself to eat until breakfast the next morning. It has helped me have a better relationship with food and makes myself accountable. I love hearing what your perspective is as being trainers. As an overweight person trying to get in shape, your perspectives makes me feel more at ease. As of this last week, I am down 88lbs. Now I am not so much focused on the #, as I am how I look and feel. Thank you for what you do!

    I really liked how you answered the first question: "How would you approach a client’s anxiety and confidence in the gym?"... This approach works in so many situations in one's professional and personal life! It builds a stronger connection with the people you interact with and you could say that it's the basis of why we keep on living... We all benefit from deeper connections with other people and from personal experience, these connections are what protect against feelings of hopelessness and despair. You're doing more than keeping a client in the gym, you could be saving their life!

    I did IF last year before i found you guys and watched a lot of stuff from Dr Jason Fung and Dr Berg talk about it. I even downloaded an app to follow, but i actually found i would obsess about the start of the eating window and didnt focus on WHAT I was eating. I yoyo-ed in weight too, but thought maybe i was doing it wrong. So I'd fall off it, then jump back on again. It probably did me really bad so glad i dont do that now, i just focus on protein intake, keeps me super full too

    I've learned this the hard way, I ended up having hyper acidity because of very strict fasting and even ended up binging after a fast. When I snapped out of it and starting to look at building muscle, I finally had proper gains but am stuck with the acid.

    Hey I’m deployed on Iraq and one of my goals here was go to go back home in a better shape. I’ve done a lot of exercises all my life but never got lean. Now this podcast became my new Netflix I’ve been learning a lot and became more passionate about this. And in a few months I’ve got more progress than I have ever had.     Agree with this. Husband and i just finished our 3rd round of the fasting mimicking diet. We're both super lean normally. We drop 5 lbs while we do it then jump right back up afterward. We do it for health and longevity benefits not weight loss.

    I have been intermittent fasting for years it’s just my lifestyle not necessarily for weight loss. I feel amazing throughout the morning and it helps me cut off terrible snacking at night. I do a 16:8 and it is well for me not for everyone.

    Well why wouldn't IF work "forever"? I'm doing regular 16/8 since 2017 and I have no plan on quitting so far. It's just the way I'm structuring my day. I also don't feel hungry during my fasting. On the contrary: whenever I do eat breakfast I find that I'm hungry the entire day.

    For most people fasting is the only thing that they can sustain when it comes to maintaining a calorie deficit. I went from 120kgs to 84 kgs in a 2 year span with fasting, mind you even when I was fat, I trained a lot, I was and still am strong as fuck, just regular portion control wasn't the way for me, I have a huge apetite.
    I have been doing fasting for close to 5 years now and honestly with adequate protein intake, there's absolutely zero worries. I still train at least 3 times a week with very high intensity.
    So chill with the fear mongering and scaring people, most people will gain more from not eating all the freaking time and lose some fat than from worrying and being hungry every 2-3 hours. CHILL

    I used IF to lose 60 lbs and have cycled on and off a few times a year to maintain. However, starting a heavier workout routine this year (currently on MAPS Aesthetics,) I’ve noticed better performance while still losing fat without IF. I still think it is a helpful tool that can be used… but it’s not necessarily the best for all situations.

    I used IF 17-21hrs frequently, and I have for sure lost a bunch of fat, kept my strength at the gym and muscle and look a lot/feel a lor better. Certainly don't agree with IF as being a bad tool.
    I understand there are unhealthy mind aspects to it, and if used incorrectly it can be negative, but that's the same as over eating, over training etc... Just use the tools that work for you I say.

      4. Ketones nourish the body from stored fat cells.

      6. Fasting-in & of itself-has health-restorative powers that all other diets do not provide.
      7. Fasting promotes overall health & clarity of mind.
      8. Become healthy sustainably to lose weight.
      9. Don’t lose weight periodically to become healthy.

    I agree that fasting is amazing for killing junk food cravings and to set yourself up for success when applying a new healthy diet.
    But I disagree in the blanket statement that it's not sustainable. It's just another individual preference. It is extremely sustainable for some, extremely unsustainable for some, and some people just fall somewhere in the middle where it's just a temporary great tool to achieve certain goals.

    Always learn a lot here. Thanks for all your helpful advice and conversations. I’ve used IF for 7 years now. Have applied it differently to suit my changing goals. It’s a great tool, and it has its place. But I agree, it can become a way for some to cover or encourage an eating disorder. When I suggest someone use IF, I explain the approach in which they can use it as a helpful tool. Dr. Peter Attia mentions how over-fasting can lead to muscle loss.     I have tried so many times to keep weight off when I fast…. The problem with it is I can’t keep a healthy habit going to the gym with no energy. If I fast I suffer the loss of muscle or I will eat two to three meals a day and gain muscle. I am 36 years old 5’6” 170 lbs. I need muscle to regulate my hormones. I thought it would help my weight loss and found out two weeks later(start to finish) I’m back where I started only with cravings and food addictions.
    I have now been following your advice on counting calories and gaining muscle so that I have power to cut back calories or add calories as I choose. Truly appreciate your advice ❤

    Intermittent fasting helped me get the ball rolling. However, it’s not sustainable, specially if your an active person. At least isn’t healthy long term goal. I actually started having more success by eating more!! Just being more conscious of WHAT I was eating, rather then when. Like they mentioned, it help break a cycle of triggers and I built off of that. Great episode! Ps I love playing Nintendo with my daughter!!!!

    I tried intermittent fasting, but it just makes me hungrier and I’ve found it just doesn’t work for me. Just tracking everything I eat and staying within my target calories works much better for me,

    Not a big fan of intermittent fasting, like 16:8, but I regularly do 24 or 36 hour fasts every few weeks. I find the most difficult part is the following day I eat a very planned day so that I don't overeat or snack on junk. It's a great exercise in will power and I find it much easier to control calories in small bursts than having to be super disciplined every day.

    Dropped 40 pounds doing omad and kept it off. Its been 6 years... Honestly after the first couple of weeks omad just feels normal. It saves time and you dont have to be so picky about what you eat.

    Yeah, I burned out on fasting. I went from being able to fast for 7-10 days to where I couldn't get through a 4 hour stretch. Gained all the weight back. Fast. I've been focused on building muscle and I'll sometimes do some "intuitive fasting" by just not eating until I'm hungry but usually I start the day with eggs and spinach or a protein shake and some fruit. I'm down 55lbs. And I don't gain it back or go on a binge when I do eat a less nutritional meal at a celebration. Love you guys and your long term, sustainable approach.

    for caller #4 - sounds like your body needs to discharge the visceral memories of your own childhood trauma. try doing squats, lunges, jump rope, jumping jacks, etc...something physical to use up the cortisol your body is releasing.
    The reason why the chocolate works is the anandamide content in it. also chocolate has Phenylethylamine which is related to amphetamines. as well as theobromine. both will make you feel better. try eating Baker's 100% chocolate. you'll get even more of the drug like effects at a lower dose. and it's better for your waist line.l
    look into somatic therapy for yourself. Somatic counseling, also known as somatic experiencing therapy, or SE therapy, is a type of therapy that helps treat post-traumatic stress, past trauma, and effects from other mental health conditions. This type of therapy connects a person's mind and body to apply psychotherapy and physical therapies during treatment.
    essentially move away from food as the treatment for what you are feeling. even splashing cold water on your face can help or gargling water b/c both activate the vagus nerve which can be very coming.

    Isn’t fasting just letting the body tap into its fat resources…? And fasting should not be followed by binging food. Intermittent fasting is not dangerous at all.

      There might be issues with people who're having chronically low blood sugar. My wife is such a case... if she's distracted and forgets to have a meal at the usual time she'll get headaches and sweats whereas I can fast for days without major issues in that department.

    I've been intermittent fasting for the past 3 years and for me. It's very sustainable. It compliments my life and feels natural for me. (I skip breakfast).

    This episode's timing could never be more perfect! You guys are kind of my gurus! I actually started fasting about two months ago (about 12 to 14 hours) mainly to lose fat, since I heard you guys talk about its benefits in previous episodes. For the first couple of weeks, I felt good and I saw a slight difference on the scale and in my body image. However, for the past two weeks, I have gained back all the weight I lost because my calorie intake is high (as always). It's true, at least in my experience, that unless you fix your relationship with food, it won't work! So it would be nice if you guys could shed light on intuitive eating and how one can improve their relationship with food!

      Intuitive eating combined with intermittent fasting for me is pretty simple… if I am absolutely starving in the morning, I don’t fast. Lol
      Most days of the month or week however, I’m not even hungry in the morning. It’s easy to delay my first meal those days

    Always love your advice! I love to eat but felt i was overeating especially at night. I recently decided to fast 12 hours/day by stopping eating around 7:00pm and drinking my coffee black in the morning so I could give my body a rest to digest throughout the night.
    I’m not overweight so I haven’t noticed weight loss but have noticed better waste elimination, less bloating and improved sleep. Not to mention, I’m finally realizing I was eating out of boredom or habit at night and it’s ok to feel a little hungry. 8/30/2023 @ 9:24am EST.

    I used IF/OMAD because I had an unhealthy relationship with food (i.e. gorging in unhealthy/processed foods 24/7). Although I lost about 40lbs of weight, I also lost a lot of muscle in the process. Now I'm weight training, eating clean and feel stronger and more confident than ever before! My only regret is that I wish I'd found this channel sooner!

    Intermittent fasting with exercise (fasted exercise) when it comes to perimenopausal women is a trainwreck. Once I stopped working out fasted I started losing the belly fat and that’s AFTER stopping doing Bootcamp classes and Hiit and just walking.

    But it makes me feel amazing at about hour 30. Lol. I lost fat using fasting as a tool. I now use it for many of the reasons you all stated as well as hoping to reduce risk of cancer recurrence

    Normally through the week, I’m done eating by 3 or 4 in the afternoon anyway. My schedule is sooo lopsided and unpredictable, it can range between 10 pm to a 6 am start. I like to be done eating 2 hours prior to going to bed, primarily because I don’t like going to bed on a full stomach. I won’t eat breakfast normally until 6-7 the following day, so I guess it’s fasting. I don’t think it helps me with fat loss, but I do think it helps regulate my weight, and it has helped keep me from overeating after work.and my gut feels much better as well. I’ve been doing this for about two years now, and I’m gettin after it in the gym 3-4 days a week.

    Adam, perhaps the next areas to address are bacteria imbalances and leaky gut (increased intestinal permeability) despite taking Seed. This may be a time to introduce prebiotics as well as immunoglobulins/antibodies into the mix. The right probiotics and immunoglobulins can directly alter bacteria composition by driving away all the bad bacteria which results in better intestinal barrier integrity, less inflammation, and fewer allergies. ⁠I am willing to bet it is all tied to your gut bacteria composition.

    I used IF for two weeks last September to do just what you said, break my addiction to sweets and junky foods. It really make my gut feel better so I use it on occasion now and then if I'm having gut issues. I still eat sweets but nothing near what I used to. It also jump started my weight loss which gave me the push I needed. After the two weeks I ate more vegetables and healthier foods and got the protein in that I needed to make gains with my lifting.

    I believe it is healthy depending on the mindset behind it as you said in different words… if someone has a good relationship with food and has a defined goal to either brake with insuline resistance or autophagy or even to control appetite and in my case for religious purpose it is a great tool

    Question: what is your guys thoughts on PCOS and fasting? Would that be an exception? My wife has it and says that she feels like she eats best when she fasts. She has lost 80 lbs in the past using this strategy and wants to lose 30 lbs this go around.

    lost 60 kg went from 150kg to 90kg and have absolutely no loose skin, did rolling 14 day fasts and have completely kept off the weight ever since
    deadlifting 4pl8 now lmao you guys have no clue about fasting

    I think a moderate IF protocol - like 16/8 - is fine. These people do OMAD or fast 3 days out of the week, I just can't imagine that being sustainable, especially when they're active and exercising. It is great for things like autophagy.

    I was low carb until I was sore often so I increase my carb intake up to 185 grams of carbs on workout days I feel normal again.

    I use fast naturally by fasting ever since I was a kid but I don’t tend to have a lot energy by lunchtime and when it comes to dinner I tend to go for junk food because of craving calories

    It didnt work for me, I only lost weight the first 2 weeks then weightloss stopped. Im in a 800 calorie deficit, i weightlift 6 times a week and walk 12k steps atleast everyday
