Tour My Cabin, I'm Super Proud of It

- One of my proudest builds here on my property was this cabin in the woods. After months of planning and deciding on a design I quickly found out that the planning stage was the easiest part of this whole build. With each piece of wood used to build this cabin coming from my own woodlot, it took me months just to harvest the trees, skid them to my sawmill, saw them into usable lumber even before I started hammering a single nail. With about 8 months of time spent building the cabin after all the wood was sawn, to say this was a long project is an understatement. Let's not get mixed up though, this was well worth it. On today's episode I"ll give you the grand tour of what makes this tiny house/cabin so special to me and why I"m super proud of it. Sure is a great feeling looking back at the project after it's been complete for about 3 years and be able to appreciate it as much as the day I completed it. Glad you're all here for the tour, here we go!
Sandy, the pride you feel in your cabin is well earned and deserved. I am sure your mill has more than paid for itself. It is no small thing to cut the trees down, bunk them up, mill them into lumber and THEN build something so substantial with that lumber. The amount of labor to build a project like this by yourself not to mention the recording of the effort, wow. As for the ladder, there are a lot of options, and I am sure you will find one that works out great; even if it is just to leave it the way it is or to allow for removing it completely and hang it on the wall.
I appreciate the well wishes. Sure is a rewarding project that should outlast me I hope

Great comment .
I'm envisioning the side railing being removable for use as a ladder!
@@sawingwithsandy Where is right here? Lol like which state etc
Yep, there's nothing in the world better than standing back and saying..., "I Built That!" Thus far, I've gone back and watched the first 37 videos of the build, so let me get back to watching the 'before' of what you've just shown us. Outstanding job, Sandy!!
Thanks for that Carl. When I go back and check out the old build videos I feel like I'm like a spring chicken with no beard and maybe slightly fewer pounds around the waist haha
Sandy, that's a fine little cabin. I think it's really cool that the majority of it is constructed from re-purposed site trees. Reminds me of some of the pioneer cabins I have seen in the States. I am impressed at the amount of components you have salvaged from other builds. I bet the view is absolutely beautiful in winter. Well done Sandy. You should rightfully be proud of your accomplishment. 👍
Thanks for that Bob. Glad you came along for the tour
@@sawingwithsandy through bolt the ladder to the rail so you can swing it up and hook it to those rafters instead of rolling it, could put two notches in the floor for the feet or some nice rubber no slip caps
Nice build Sandy…greetings from down under Australia 🇦🇺…stay warm
Hey Dennis! Cheers
Just a simple and yet extraordinary piece of work. The fact that you did this totally from tree to finished cabin is a tribute to your skills. Love the bug bite wood! The only thing better would have been if it had had worm trails in it. Rustic and fabulous! Great job!
I appreciate those kind words Mary!
I am only 1:07 into the video and I am already disappointed that I only get to leave ONE thumbs up! I don't even have to watch the whole video to know I'm gonna like.
I appreciate that Michael!
The thing I love about your videos is that you are so relatable to an average person. Pretty much anyone can do what you do easily enough without a lot of money but a lot of ambition. You should be so proud of what you've done. You're actually the inspiration of why I have a Woodland Mills sawmill, saw and build my own projects. Thank you Sandy!
I appreciate those kind words. Always happy to have ya along for the tour
Nice place to be alone in nature, away from the world and the noise of modern society. Good work ! 🙂👍
Thank you!
It's nice to see someone creating and doing it yourself. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of it as long as your are satisfied. Perfect place to leave it all behind and enjoying it all. Keep on creating!!
I appreciate the kind words Charles!
@@sawingwithsandy I built a number of tree houses as a kid and adult along with underground shelters, but you my friend have inspired a lot of us to just get out there and do it! Keep on dreaming it and building it!!
That is a really cool little cabin.
Thanks for coming along for the tour
Very nice Sandy!! I like your idea of hinging the ladder, at least if you have more than yourself there. A boat trailer winch would quickly and easily lift it out of your way, giving you a lot more usable space, and also a better out side view, while being able to be lowered if you are going to use the loft! I have a feeling that if you hinged the ladder, it would spend most of its time up and out of your way!
I like that winch idea, never even thought about that! Thanks for sharing it
Maybe folding attic stairs to save room below?
Great job. The only thing I'd add would be a small bump out for some sort of toilet.
That would do the trick Neal. Thanks for coming along for the tour
Howdy Sandy- great little cabin. I understand the joy of taking the trees and going through the complete process of milling and building with the lumber. It certainly gives you a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. You have earned the right to be proud of it. Take care and God bless
I mentioned you in a video about our Woodland Mills sawmill that will be posted Friday night. Hope it’s ok to do that. Blessings
Absolutely! I'm happy to have your support and well wishes here on the channel. Always great to hear from folks like yourself about your own projects
@@sawingwithsandy Thank you my friend. Blessings
Your bottom corner post is bowing out I’d be worried a big wind would blow that cabin off the concrete pads.
Turned out great!!! If your guests don’t enjoy themselves, that’s not the cabin’s fault. Just means they need (more) therapy. 😎
Thanks for coming along for the tour! I think for the most part everyone who visits has a great time. Really peaceful!
The thick stainless steel chimney pipe, which goes from the stove on the ground floor through all the rooms to the roof and heats all the rooms, is simply ingenious, as it not only looks good, but is also highly functional.
Dang, you SHOULD be proud of it. Great job. Thanks for letting us in. :)
Thanks for that Steve
Thats a 250 a night Air bnb right there! You did a good job with it!
Thanks Kev. I’m so particular about my land I’d be scared to have anyone rent it out unless I knew them that
@@sawingwithsandy I hear ya. I would be the same way too. A nieghbour has a bunch of bunkies and has them almost all rented out for the summer.
Really nice cabin! I can hear the pride in your voice. We’ll done!
Appreciate that Frank!
To hold foundation in place, pick two spots, 15-20ft away from base, dig holes, remove dirt then back fill with clean dirt. The pines and fir put out acidic soil. Then plant two Sugar Maples, one in each filled hole. Cut any pines within 20 ft. Remove needles, give a sprinkle of lime in winter when there is snow, add nitrates. This will ensure the Maples take. They grow roots three times the size of above ground. They hold rocks and soil in place, reducing any chance of house movement. Plus they are lovely, attract wildlife.
Thanks for coming along for the tour and sharing your experiences
❤ Also a good fire-prevention strategy as evergreens are dangerous near a home.
Any tree around a house or building must be considered. If he likes the ‘feel’ of pine and smell, they do sell miniature pine and fir trees that don’t grow beyond 10-12ft.. they would provide thermal cover, noise reduction, and add wind protection.
You should be proud of your cabin. It is a beautiful well engineered cabin. I especially like the thick outside stair treads and two sides with walkway. Just by looking at it, you must have been sawing and milling for months!
Truly a job well done.
It sure did take some time to get the wood cut. Appreciate the kind words Larry
Very nice I've been on a permanent camping trip for 4 years and I just recently got a job only reason I've been homeless for 4 years as I diving accident broke my neck took many years to get surgery and then I've been trying to do the SSI disability thing got denied cuz I'm not quite 50 but I'm going to buy a piece of property it's totally sloped that way when I dig into the Earth just a little bit I want the back side of my cabin to be way up in the air looking over a beautiful view and I love what you've done there gave me some good ideas thank you so much for sharing I am a new subscriber and thumbs up thank you
Great to have ya here on the channel Dave!
Outstanding job Sandy and what a great place to escape to when you need some down time. Well done!!
Thanks for that Jack!
Had a good chuckle at the description of the site as "wildernesque". My newest favorite word, and I LOVE the cabin.
In a few words, You have a really nice place there ,Well thought out and done right, Congrats.
I appreciate that Rob
Very nice cozy cabin! Love it Sandy! You should be very proud of all the steps it takes to get to the end product! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
Thanks for that Mark
Thanks for Going STEP BY STEP in the structure And Building of YOUR CABIN..its FANTASTIC
Thanks for that Karen. Glad to have ya along.
Very nice cabin Sandy ! You have good reason to be proud of it !
Thanks for that Gary!
Wow, now that's what you call taking it to the land. Beautiful work.
You could always dig in an in-ground basement /first floor out of charred logs as the foundation walls if the ground is fairly porous. Only because the cabin's on a hillside. Nice cabin.
I like that idea> You've got me thinking now about the future
Your cabin is beautifully unique and wonderfully practical, and wherever one's eye rests, meticulously precise craftsmanship is evident!
Clearly very well thought out before wood was even cut, from the foundation to the roof ridge shows outstanding attention to detail.
High quality materials combined with very high standards of workmanship make this uncluttered, light, bright and airy cabin really stand out!
Imaginative, naturally beautiful and with the double, glazed doors bringing the outdoors inside, really quite magical.
I find your lovely cabin to be elegantly simple and simply elegant.
Your sense of pride is wholeheartedly justified, thank you for sharing your inspiring cabin.
Thank you for that !
Thank you for sharing this with us Sandy, it is a cracking small cabin, I would love to spend time in there it is so well planed you have every thing you could want for a short stay, you have quite the artist in you and it comes to the front when you do your buildings.
Thanks for that! Appreciate the support!
You should be proud...its great 👍
Thanks Gerard!
Sandy - what a cozy little cabin. I love this build - and hope to build something like this on a piece of land like that one day. Hope you get to enjoy it as much as possible!
Thanks Bobby
@@sawingwithsandy of course!
You did a great job with your cabin. 😊
You should be proud! It's an awesome little cabin. Now you've got my brain gears grinding!
Thanks Marvin. Has been a great project
Love your bug wood. We use to distress wood to look like bug killed and then we would put it in multi million $ rustic homes, people loveed the look, I was once a professional painter and we did that kind of work.
Thanks for the tour 👍
That's pretty neat work! I've used hemlock flooring that was similar in which a wire brush was run over it along with a circle saw to make marks on it. Bet you've got some neat tricks up your sleeve.
Great build! I appreciate the inspiration and ideas. I’m about to build a small cabin with my wife and boys over Christmas break with wood I’ve harvested from tearing down a few barns.
Sounds like a great time to get out and enjoy yourself with your family. Thanks for watching Devin
Devin, great idea!!! You should film it, if possible and put it on YT 😁😁 I would watch it for sure👍🤗🤗❣️
Way to go Devin! Your boys will never forget!
AWESOME cabin Sandy!!! I love it.....what a wonderful place to go to just get away and relax...I know you will enjoy it for many years to come!
Thank you!
Always love the cabin tours! Great job! Wondering if you have considered hiding the posts underneath? Might be a great use for some of your off-cuts! 😁
Keep up the great work. I have a 38 acre property in the woods and you provide much inspiration. Cheers from New Brunswick!
That’s a great idea actually! Now my brain is turning haha. Sounds like a nice spot you’ve got
You should be proud….nice…just absolutely NICE !
Thanks G F!
Amazing job Sandy! Cabin looks fantastic and cozy! Great imagination and creative build!!! Love following your channel and your hard work! Keep up the great content 👏
Thanks appreciate that Max
Could put a little cart in the corner for winter cooking. It's cute.
Very true! Would be handy I think
So cute! I wish I knew how to build. I couldn't even build a (safe and usable) tree house.
Nice job. It's sweet that you're proud of the job you did.
Glad to have ya along for the tour. Certainly something I hope outlasts me
Love the verandah and the overhang on side. Makes so much sence
Thanks I appreciate that!
Very nicely done sir! If everyone had a place like that, the world would be a much happier place.
I appreciate that!
There would be a lot few people too. That would be magical
Yeah, I'd sure be happier.
I can live a happy life in this cabin.
I think if I had to move out into the woods full time I'd live here for sure too
@@sawingwithsandy it has everything you need, space to do meals. Space to sleep and a space for lounging and do some work assuming you get data. You have a Greek for water for shower and boil for drinking and cooking with. It’s a perfect place. Away from civilization.
Super cabin, so peaceful. Awesome job!
Thanks Paul!
I admire you have such a small Cabin, congratulation.
Really incredible. The beauty is in the simplicity. Very well thought-out. You should be proud!
Thanks Tim!
I love your light switches
Hand made and very discrete
Cozy and warm! One time you might try hog wire instead of boards on your porches.... then nothing blocks your view!
Beautiful work! I hope this cabin brings you many joyful nights/days!
Watching your video while I'm drinking my coffee and it is currently snowing outside here in Eastern Ontario, I wish I could do it in front of a cozy fire in a tiny cabin...one day!
Sounds like a great spot to be though. I'm having a sludge as we speak watching the snow as well. Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for sharing.
Great job! I love it!
You need an Rv telescopic ladder, that way all your living room area is free.
That would work really well! Thanks for the idea
I enjoyed looking at your
Cabin
I appreciated all the work you put in your cabin
I appreciate you watching June
Man. You gave me inspiration to go to the mountains in Vermont and build my own cab. Good job you did building yours.
Thank you! I hope your build has gone well!
Looks great Sandy.
Fantastic work! A lot of people aren’t happy unless they’ve either spent 45k or built it out of mud and sticks, very reasonable build with just enough to feel cozy!
Merci pour les bonne idée
Merch!
You did a beautiful job..
Thanks Dalton!
You deserve to be proud.
Thanks Kristi
You should be! Very nice!
Very cute cabin, it’s clear you put a lot of thought behind this build.
Thank you!
I love it! I can picture myself sitting on the deck having a smoke and coffee. We’ll done
You should be proud, that's a great build,I'd like the same only with kitchen and bathroom.
Thanks appreciate that!
I toast a beer to you. mad respect.
Thanks for that. Appreciate it! Cheers
Great project! I love the way you used recycled materials and kept your costs down.
Thanks Sean
I watch a lot of cabin building videos and I have built my own cabin with another person. You did such a fantastic job on your cabin, from the use of vapor barrier to building your walls correctly! I watch many other videos and pick up on a lot of mistakes being made because I worked with a man that once built cabins for a living. I was so glad to see someone do it right!! Thank you and very nice build!
Nice piece of work. Be proud, you earned it. Thanks for the share.
Thanks for that!
Sandy the cabin is beautiful nice congratulations makes good cabin nices inside.keep out from area animal’s dangerous.keeping wood inside cutting for stoves to keeping warmth inside.water blankets all area sealed windows too.keeping warmer god’s blessed all times🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Miguel
Beautiful Cabin Good Job Sandy
Thanks Mary
ONE WORD,AWESOME
Thanks Phillip!
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching Lewis!
the siding looks very good
Beautiful. Maybe some day you can replace the deck railing with cable (so the view won't be blocked), and extend the porch floor to make a big deck with a table & chairs, and a (deck safe) fire pit for hanging out with your friends, cooking on a grill, etc. It's nice to be up off the ground, especially in the evenings when it gets buggy.
Sounds like some great ideas!
Be proud and happy!
Thanks for the that Larry
That's a sweet cabin. I like the aesthetics of the bug-speckled boards.
Thanks Karl!
Comfy little escape to wilderness indeed! Your friends must truly appreciate it.
Personally, I would finish and varathane the floor.
Thanks for checking out my cabin
Very cool. You should be proud of that built. It’s got great bones in it. Solid
Thanks Ethan!
SANDY all the best , Ziggy, Alberta ,nice to see progress ,
Thanks Ziggy
Awesome cabin. Glad it stays put. Love the ladder on casters. Windows and open ceiling gives an open look.
Thanks Dan. One of my favourite builds
Absolutely love it. Beautiful job. Inspiring video.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job very cozy love the location May God Bless you
You did a great job buddy and the fact that you had the tools and ability to do that yourself is impressive. Unfortunately most of us do not have those tools and ability .because we are not carpenter.
Glad you enjoyed the tour
Be proud!..I'd stay in it..downstairs..! 😁💖
Thanks Donna
Beautiful Cabin and what an incredible location!! 😍😍😍
Thank you!
Nice , Nice job. I could stay there with no problem. You can even cook on the stove. As far as the Stove pipe. Imagine how much HOTTER it would be if you had used the the thin wall stove pipe. Probably safer too. Some say add a small kitchen and Bath??? Like the location. I'm sure you love arriving and hate leaving. Good solid work.
Hi Sandy - luv the Tiny House! Just a comment please. -- you mentioned that you did not use OSB on the underside of the floor in the areas that were outside of the wall framing because it was unheated space above. Obviously good and a cost saving - but - it would be worth mentioning that if you used the OSB in that area, you would have had rot problems with that OSB due to drainage through the open web walking surface and deck. You would have been replacing that on a regular basis adding extra work and extra cost. I am sure you are aware of that but thought it may be worth mentioning. Love the channel - never miss. Regards Dennis
Great point Dennis. Thanks for sharing
Absolutely adorable
Thanks Angie
Beautiful cabin.......Take care, Bluefin.
Thanks Bluefin
You must be a fortunate millionar
Super cool! Love it
Wow!!! Spectacular!
Thanks Peggy!
Awesome. Love it! i would spent every weekend there.
Thanks! Great place to hang out for sure
I also enjoy the wilderness and have a cabin in the NW. I found I needed a lot more storage than I had ever estimated. Hope you enjoy your cabin. I stay in my off grid cabin the whole summer. Best of luck.
Sounds like a great time. Would be nice in that area I bet
Upper loft makes for a great hunting hide out
Lots of uses for sure
Nice little nest in the woods.
Thanks Alexander
nice simple, quality build, to get some peace.
Thanks for coming along for the tour
Good explanation for why you didn't use rock or concrete as the foundation. Best of luck.
Thanks Angela
Good job. Great place to be in a snowstorm! Enjoy.
I agree with ya there Judi
