- 2007 version (still available on console with Orange Box) compared to the most recent Steam version (build 4016097). This video highlights visual details in texture, lighting, animation and physics. "getpos" and "setpos" commands were used to record everything at the exact same angle and location on both instances. You can easily find the 2007 version on PC with a quick Google search for TF2 1.0.0.9
Notes:
- The missing blue flame at 0∶22 is still present in the current version, it didn't appear under that angle for some reason.
- Syringe Gun at 1∶52 does spin in first person.
- The lighting difference at 2∶51 is for the character selection menu only

When i was young, i though the demoman’s broken bottle did more damage than the regular non broken one
man, these days I was playing tf2, and the thing breaks, I thought exactly about that, but then I died and I couldn't make it break anymore

Yeah valve forgot to update the tips ever since they first made this stupid change in 2015. And since you’re new to the game, I would recommend playing on these 2 things first before playing on public servers which are “training” and “developer commentary” with captions turned on in the options

I mean all things considered, dropping an ammo pack makes a bit more sense than getting ammo for weapons that are very much not a rocket launcher from a rocket launcher
That said, I do wish it wasn't just straight up the fucking medium ammo pack, that's always been a bit goofy [and can sometimes kinda lie to Engineers] even if it does work at being noticeable, but I feel like there's gotta be something that checks the boxes of making sense as a universal ammo pick-up that is noticeable and can be expected to be carried by the mercs, like an ammo _pouch_ or somethin', same basic idea, but it's not a whole-ass box
On the subject of hints, another example of hints not being updated is that Sandman-related ones still mention the ol' stun mechanic
Still hate that got Thwacked entirely, could've at least kept it for Moonshots, because as it currently is the Sandman gets entirely outclassed by the Wrap Assassin, a god damn cardboard tube and a bauble

CommanderTaco I know they removed the pills inside the grenade launcher because it used to fire 6 shots, but now It only shoots four, so they had to change that. But idk why it still has 6 slots, it's not hard changing it to 4.

Unfortunately, only the stock and Natasha had separate models for the first person, other weapons like Tomislav and Brass Beast did not have models for the first person

Morgan Freeman maybe removed when they did the console releases and it needed to be kiddy friendly. Likely merged development branches so they weren't different for all the versions and the bottle breaking was lost. also explains the animations in the medic gun no longer working, consoles probably needed it out for optimisation.

Eh, I dunno. Some of what makes the game interesting and unique is the Source spaghetti it's running on. Trimping probably isn't something you get in a modern game engine unless you specifically try to code it in.

The reason they did this is because in the source game engine, there can only be 2048 entities ( objects, props, hats, lights, etc ) so valve removed unnecessary entities and animations due to the fact so many people were wearing the fancy new shiny hats they released, and you go on a 32 player multiplayer server where everyone has a hat, you can reach that limit and possibly even more than the limit too!

Also making ammo boxes instead of picking up dropped weapons for ammo is both more obvious and makes more sense and also allows you to pick up dropped weapons

Ummm…no, it took 1 year because the health and ammo packs in the intel room hallway and spiral were added in the Goldrush update in 2008. It was the very first major update of tf2, and it was what gave us the payload map Goldrush and a whole bunch of other medic achievements.

@@heavenandhello6629 this was a change because of gun mettle, since we can pick up weapons now walking over them and getting ammo would be extremely annoying when trying to pick it up.

apparently you can't break the bottle now because now all models operate on the c_model system as opposed to the old v_model and w_model system. saves on memory, though I can't see why they don't just add in a c_model of a broken bottle when you crit.
I can live with a lot of the changes since the game is still fairly playable (yes I know there’s still the bot problem) but the one thing that really bothers me is the lighting changes just make every class look like they constantly have a flashlight underneath their face 😢

A lot of people say they worsened the graphics for optimization. However, I'd say that, most of, if not, ALL weapons look worse due to an *oversight*!
They screwed up the weapon materials, such as drastically increasing the rim light boost (the ugly grey shine you see on the scattergun at 0:38) , and replaced most weapon lightwarps with a different, more smoothed out gradient (like on the shotgun at 2:41). They also updated most Phong masks (a texture that tells which parts of a model are reflective) to have a more "uniform" intensity applied everywhere, instead of showing up only on tiny scratches or paint strokes, leading to, yet again, a more greyish shine on the model.
They can make the current weapons look drastically better than they used to, but they simply choose not to. In fact, they have quadruple the texture resolution as the original models, but they also keep the same, high polycount regardless of whether you're seeing them in the third or first person. Plus, the rigging is screwed up, which explains why the syringe gun doesn't spin.

Damsen all the new updates added more garbage for PCs to handle, with only a few people at Valve who still work on it, it might’ve became unoptimized (is that even a word?). The graphical downgrade could’ve became a response to this, but didn’t fix the issue entirely.
Disoptimised may be more accurate ( unoptimised would be for sth never optimised in the first place) and if it doesn't exist id be glad to have coined the term. :)

The Post Processing in Tf2 has changed soo much. Generally maps do look better now but the lighting has been tweaked so much it doesn't really resemble the original. It's not always worse though.
A lot of these old visual effects can be traced to being broken in one update: Gun Mettle.
This update brought war paints with it. Somehow, this broke more reflective textures in the game at the time.
Probably skins didnt look so well with reflections, so Valve desided that money is more imortant than the style of the game
i think they removed so much detail when the game became f2p so that people with slow pc's could have a better experience. but that's just my guess
These changes have gradually happened over the years. Plus if they did that, it would make no sense - you would think a free to play game would be unoptimized compared to a paid game where people pay money. If Valve hadn’t done their BS with all the hats they’d be better off just bringing back the original release of the game after the bunny hop patch.

60 fps is an understatement.. you can probalby run the game at 300 fps on settings that would cause modern tf2 to go down to 40 fps, depending on the map and cosmetics ingame

People have mentioned the performance reasons for model and animation changes but what's with the lighting? Seems like models now have too little lighting contrast and have lost a lot of shading while maps have too much and are a lot darker in places. Just looks worse overall.

did you forget about all the new weapons, hats, gamemodes, taunts, and hats added and the ability to use custom addons. Trust me m8 if tf2 had that many gibs and entities with physics the source engine would not be able to handle it and crash.
sp4rrow if you're talking about crashing as in lag then you make settings for those who do not have a capable computer. Serverside can be fixed simply due to valves size and resource, unless they truly don't give a shit about the game which seems like it. Items that truly crash the game are bugged and can be patched. There was no reason to completely downgrade graphics since that can be client-side processed. If you do downgrade you should add settings to enable and disable certain aspects, like moving parts in the medics guns.
sp4rrow Except the body bits flying around made tf2 what it was, and with source 2 coming soon™, they better do something with the graphics. If stressing your engine and not getting the full experience is your thing, you were able to make the gibs disappear instantaneously for a smoother gameplay, not that it mattered that much in the first place. Now you have very limited options about how you want to make the game look like, just shitty looking "optimizations" on an engine that's almost 13 years old. As for the added bling, they used to be awesome when the game was still fairly new. Remember the conga epidemic? It was the shit when it came out and still is to some degree. Guess what they're doing now, though. Adding some cosmetics that few people care about? Will these cosmetics that nobody pay attention to still be trendy in the next few years? Likely not.

Everything in this video never happened for tf2 on this game bundle pack called “The Orange Box” for Xbox 360 since it’s the same exact thing as what the pc version used to be like in 2007 due to it never getting updated for 16 years unlike the pc version. And if you don’t have a 360, it can also be played backwards compatibly on the original Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox Series X.

I assume models were simplified to accommodate weapon skins, which I'm not a fan of. Though I'm glad they removed the grunting from fall damage as the grunting didn't match with the actual characters voices.

Not just the weapon skins. I believe that they got rid of a lot of the animations in an attempt to better optimise the game, considering that cosmetics and unusuals (particle effects) likely have a significant impact on performance, and those are additional visuals that the engine has to render.
The game was a pretty unoptimized piece of shit in the first place anyways. There's a popular joke that even the most powerful rig couldn't run TF2 at max settings because the game was just so poorly optimized. A lot of this was was probably done to lower the strain on systems.

I played this game in 2007 and all the bugs that the game had made the knives even more overpowered. For example you could stab a player in the back when you were not even attacking him from behind!!!!!

This feels like the Mandela Effect even though it actually did happened.
They should bring back an option to enable old viewmodels, lighting, details etc for higher end machines. Most of these changes are good for performance, but those fancy '07 graphics should make a comeback, under a hidden option, or a "ultra" graphic setting of some sort.
Customize the experience for those who want it. What I dearly miss are the more detailed weapon models, with better lighting, transparency and most notably, movable parts. The bolt moving on Mundee's rifle and the bullet being ejected are some of these small, yet important and pleasurable things that prove that the devil is, ideed, in the details.
