    Top notch video, I did not expect to see Terence Mckenna or DMT Machine Elves in an Elder Scrolls video. Michael Kirkbride is the one to thank for these concepts in the TES universe. He wrote / conceptualized a lot of Morrowind's lore which is now considered the best or most interesting lore in the Elder Scrolls series. He no doubt has met the Machine Elves, in real life. In which dimension though? Well, that's a story for another day.

    Just a fun fact: At the end of the Clockwork City DLC in TES:O Sotha Sil very discreetly breaks the fourth wall if you question him. He calls you the "Prisoner" and says he calls you this because while you know you're in a "prison cell" (a video game,) but unlike him you can also see the bars of the cell (the tv or computer screen.)

    Holy shit....
    Last season *wink
    I sat down and played Oblivion. I couldn't do a single thing because I would talk to the NPCs and I could feel the words go in my right ear, over top of my brain and leaked into the aether via my left.
    So I ran about the open world, for hours.
    Every time nght fell (Oblivion's sky is beautiful at night) I couldn't help literally stopping in place just to stare. I actually felt like I was there.
    One of the nights my silly ass was looking skyward....
    I got attacked by a bear.
    I have never shit myself as much in my life. It was only a split second and I didn't "go bad" but it felt like I was ripped back through the tv and into my body.

    I've always thought elder scrolls lore was too deep for just a normal play through. Even when I first played it I could sense something far deeper than just shooting magic fireballs at spiders and bandits. There seemed to be accurate consistent believes of the people, races (and their origins, relations etc.), relations between states and provinces and finally philosophy and religions. It's literally a whole other world that people in this one can immerse themselves in because it is so closely related to the issues and occurrences in our own. Master piece.

      I think they're symbolic of each player's game. The Elder Scrolls show every possibility for a specific event, but as the lore says, "Without the hero, there is no event." Every major events is caused by the player, and so every player's journey is true, all recorded in the Elder Scrolls. Magnus, the Architect of the Mundas, then keeps them in his Solar Library, enshrined forever in the magical sun. The Elder Scrolls are all of our stories, magically preserved in memory.

    Your concept of Vivec might be a bit off. He isn't a god like the player characters, because they're not gods. Vivec is a god because he and the other two tribunal gods drew power from the heart of Lorkhan. His powers diminish if he does not bathe in the divine power yearly, this was the whole plot of Morrowind. The Nerevarine (the player) has to take out the guy who's been stealing that same power that Vivec gets his godhood from.

    "When I die in the world of time, then I'm completely asleep. I'm very much aware that all I have to do is choose to wake. And I'm alive again. Many times I have very deliberately tried to wait patiently, a very long, long time before choosing to wake up. And no matter how long it feels like I wait, it always appears, when I wake up, that no time has passed at all. That is the god place. The place out of time, where everything is always happening, all at once." - Vivec
    Was surprised this quote didn't make it into the video.
    I've always considered a lot of this deeper, more philosophical lore (the Mad Godhead, CHIM, the Monomyth, etc.) to be metaphorical for overcoming existential crises, forging a sense of identity, realizing the conflicts that determined our present state of existence, and things of that nature. Although, gleaning what I can of Michael Kirkbride's personality and proclivities, maybe it is all meant to be taken literally. Either way, it's interesting to entertain, but obviously I find the former more relatable, if not necessarily useful.
    EDIT: That's to say nothing of it's "woah" factor, in distinguishing it from other fantasy by introducing these bizarre ideas, which is also, I believe, a huge part of its presence in-game and in-lore.

    The video references the Dwemer disappearing because of attempts to use Elder Scrolls, but correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm certain that's not the case at all.
    In 1E 700, at the Battle of Red Mountain, the Dwemer Chief Tonal Architect, Kagrenac, with his tools, Wraithguard, Sunder and Keening, attempted to bind the Dwemer to the Heart of Lorkhan, in an attempt to raise a new Numidium of his own design and use it's divine power to either enhance the Dwemer people entirely or rather to convert the souls of all Dwemer into the Numidium itself
    At the very moment that Kagrenac activated the Numidium, a Dragon Break occurred. In TES history, Dragon Breaks have occurred with EVERY Numidium activation.
    It is unknown exactly what happened or what rituals were used, it is unknown if the Nerevarine fell in battle, or if he was betrayed, or if he succeeded. Scholars of the event are inclined to agree all situations are true at once, the one thing everyone agree's on however, the one thing we all know, is that the Battle of Red Mountain concluded with every dwarf except from Yagrum Bagrum, who was residing in an Outer Plane at the time, disappearing entirely.
    Depending on which theory is true, it's possible that all the Dwemer were technically alive (albeit as souls) during the events of TES III, but would have been destroyed when the Nerevarine destroyed the Heart of Lorkhan and Kagrenac's Numidium along with it.

    • @Anon-fd8ui
      @Anon-fd8ui 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      No, they just likened the Dwemer's disappearance to the misuse of their tools - whether those tools be Kagrenac's or the Elder Scrolls themselves, they all have the underlying themes of time and space

    • @AFlyingCoconut
      @AFlyingCoconut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Ah, after rewatching I can see where I made a mistake, I would say however that the commentator doesn't do a very good job of separating those 2 ideas
      - Talks about how Elder Scrolls can manipulate reality and time
      - Dwemer disappeared
      - "This isn't the first time this has happened"
      It sounds like he's implying the Elder Scrolls did this, especially with that, "This isn't the first time this has happened" line and then references Alduin being cast adrift using the scrolls as his example of another time this has happened. But as we both know, what happened with Alduin and the fate of the Dwarves are nowhere near comparable

    • @Anon-fd8ui
      @Anon-fd8ui 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, I agree. It's not their best video, though to be fair they're dealing with a fairly complicated facet of the game's lore. They also likened Vivec a lot to the Dwemer, despite the metaphysics surrounding both of them being very different.

You asserted that there are some objects, concepts, or beings in the TES universe that exist "outside of time", but you don't elaborate on the implications, why this is important, or how it relates to the player (which it appeared as though you were going for that). This video essentially goes nowhere except lecture about how people screwing with things they don't understand can get them into serious trouble, but that's not really any point that needed asserting in the first place.
    I truly thought this would have been better if it were about how the player is in a way considered a fracture in space-time and exists outside of it, how a new champion of the world appears exactly when they are meant to, much like Gandalf, and how the player's actions affect the world. You sort of touch on that but drop it immediately afterward.
    And unfortunately, your videos often pull one of those PBS Idea Channel moves where you don't really make a point and it's just a series of tangents - the difference is that Idea Channel isn't meant to answer any questions.

      Ody -Chan Yeah, I got that feeling from this video. That no solid point was fully explored/explained. Have felt this with a lot of lore\philosophy\essay\etc. channels over the years. But I can still appreciate the exposure of different ideas to those who weren't familar with em already.

      Yea this specific "content production" is not that good at all. This script sounds like it was ACTUALLY made on drugs lol these "thought complexes" do not even refer to each other or "connect" for 12 full minutes. (Honestly, I cant ridicule shoddy for this video because its still better than my own content. >>>>But, Damn. At least my videos actually form a complete thought) ... This video was weird shoddy. Don't do drugs bro. I don't know if this video was inspired by your own recent personal indulgence in drugs and are now subliminally advocating the responsible experience of them. But, Damn, ....this video was NOT like your others. (and not in a good way.)

      Seems like you understood the points just fine, as you stated most of the ones that the video made yourself, but then completely ignored them as an excuse to criticize the video for problems it doesn't have. No offense but just because you "didn't get it" doesn't necessarily mean the video failed to get any points across, and that is therefore somehow a failure on the part of the video. Maybe you just need more context, in which case, I'd suggest you start researching.

    This is a really cool video. If you read some of the lore in the games you'll find passages that state things like how the lesser/weaker aedra/daedra/gods couldn't understand their own existence enough to "exist" until the formation of Akatosh, and therefore the implementation of "time" as a universal force.
    Also, in regards to the Elder Scrolls, there's an in-game lore book (I forget the title) where a man visits the monks who keep the scrolls in order to study them. One monk would tell him a particular scroll was in one place, but when he would look it wouldn't be there. Another monk would tell him it was in another place entirely, but again, it wouldn't be there. It wasn't that the monks had misplaced the scrolls, rather the very nature of the scrolls dictates that they both exist, and don't exist simultaneously, and so they can spontaneously disappear or reappear in seemingly random locations, and so the easiest way to find a particular scroll is to not be looking for it at all.
    Side note, this is the first of your videos I've watched and I have definitely subscribed, :-)

    To me every bit of lore written by Kirkbride (the guy who wrote Vivec's lore, among much of the TESIII lore) is like the writing of George Lucas. It's interesting when there're other writers there to reign his madness in, but if he's given full control of the lore it because stupid.

    Some very intriguing stuff, but this was a little disappointing. I was expecting to get hit with a mind bomb or a few, but they never came for me. The point "The Elder Scrolls has some funky time stuff going on and psychedelics screw with our perceptions" feels disconnected and isn't exactly an exciting revelation in and of itself... Looking forward for future videos though. Hope life starts to go more smoothly for ShoddyCast!
