As I sat next to my father the day he passed away, his last words on this earth was "I love you son". He tried to fight but his body could take no more. No longer a son but a father I hope my last words too will be "I love you son". RIP Dad I miss you..

Caner Erten yup. My father was a profoundly good person. His watch stopped within 5 minutes of the time of death. When my grandfather died, clocks stopped in the house. They told me back then it was something that happens in the family. After my father died I looked it up and turns out it’s not uncommon. I have lots of stories like that, many people tell me I should write a book.

My father died last Tuesday, buried with full military honours on Friday and here I am on a very lonely Sunday night revisiting old sad videos to keep his memory fresh. @Liam O’Neil I'm afraid this is the very issue with those who suffer like this. It isn't a conscious choice to entertain those thoughts nor is it an option to think any other way whether it be positive, assertive etc..
For most, there is an inherent knowledge that this is a sickness. They think and feel like any "normal" person except they are interrupted by invasive thoughts which hijack and otherwise healthy brain and a good day - things fall south quickly onward from there.
Getting over yourself is applicable in, say, moments of grief, trivia, conundrums. Here is an issue whereby the affected party aren't struggling to get over themselves, but struggling to understand how to think with clarity without being invaded by thoughts of the contrary. With that clarity, it's hoped, will come understanding and, in that, remedy.

I was vaguely aware of this poem in my teen years but I heard it shortly after my father died in Grade 12 and wept. A few years after a quadrupel bypass operation he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He worked every day until he literally couldn't any more, fighting to support his family and only when it was clear that there was no way to continue did he stop. He signed his DNR, he wrote a letter to each of us to be opened once he was gone and he went. I was sitting next to him when he breathed his last breath and this poem comprises everything I wish I could have thought to say then.

This poet is a craftsman of words, an artist of language, a sculptor of profound meaning, who shows that life is, but a dimming flicker of light as quickly extinguished as it once was lit. Each sentence is like a concussive, yet alluring shell of pathos and mourning, that is sadly sobering, but life affirming.

I love this because it’s about fighting against the “dying light” which can be a symbol for just about anything in our lives. My grandmother passed away on September 1st, 2022; and exact week from my birth day. It destroyed me that I couldn’t spend one last birthday with her but I started thinking back on the whole experience. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer in October of ‘21 and was given 6-10 months to live. Looking back at she had lived longer than 10 months by technicality since it would’ve been 10 months on August 20th. Since she passed on September 1st she had lived longer than what she was told she would… in a sense raging against the dying of the light.

Couldn’t have found this at a better time. For several months I’ve been dealing so much guilt, shame and self-penance. For hurting the woman I was going to marry, and now gone. Self-forgiveness has not come easy- been living in a prison-like life. Although you’ll always have others tell you you’re a good person and that it’s ok to make mistakes, no matter how terrible, doesn’t make it any easier to cope with the process of getting better and move on. I’ll make sure I watch this more often, and to any of you out there, if you truly love someone, you do right by them!

I used to love this poem and many of his poems .. but now.. I see it so differently... Dylan was 'raging' alcoholic.. the 'dying of the light' in his life was caused by his drinking, the disintegration of his optimism and creativity by his disease. Maybe he needed his rage to keep going and not fall down .. but ..not everyone does.. and although I love his work with words.... I don't look to him as a source of wisdom or direction for a life of wholeness or instruction for a good death.. so this whole poem is just something that many people accept because it kinda sounds right to them without really deeply examining what is means.. 'raging' against death has become kinda pervasive. I'm an icu nurse and I have seen hundred + of people die during my career.. and the ragers are like a kid kicking an elephant...

Due to some life challenges I missed the last few years of my fathers life. I made it home a week before he passed, holding his hand, myself raging against those that tainted his thoughts of me, keeping me from him. Never able to have a moment with him and my daughter. We were a large family and someone was always at his bedside. He was such a tough , gritty man , with the warmest heart and sweetest soul. Every day the nurse would say, this day would likely be his last, after a few days she said, I’m not saying that anymore. We finally left his room a few hours with no one there. And then he passed. Like protecting us as children, he didn’t want to leave us or didn’t want our last memory of seeing him go. I wasn’t able to attend his funeral and a part of me died that day. What a great man. I have some solace in that he now knows the truth of my last few agonizing years and y I wasn’t there. . I pray that someday my Ellie will be home and I can heal this bitter heart while sharing ur life. I wish I had ur strength. I love u Dad

When my Father died, for years i felt i was drifting, without an anchour or compass in life.
But a few years affter he had died, i looked at some of the mannerisms and expressions on my Two year old daughters face, and recognised them.
I felt myself saying things, and upholding values my father had tried to teach me.
I realised he had never died, he just had to leave us. some things cant be just killed off.

To me, Rage was a familiar spirit that I often went back to, to put those around me into submission. Love is the spirit that I’m learning to turn to now. It’s fruits don’t rot on the vine and leave me in a state of regret.

I always toke this poem to mean not to give up hope. That even in your deepest, darkest moemonets, you should claw and fight and struggle your way towards hope, even if it is just a small flickering thing. But, after my mom passed away, and seeing her spened her final days on this earth with her family and grandkids, I think I have a better understanding of it.

I did CPR on my father for 17 mins when he had a cardiac arrest. He got to hospital still alive but unconscious. I managed to talk to him once again only for him to have two more cardiac arrests a week later. I then had the decision to turn his life support machine off. I was grateful now to able to speak to him once last time.I play this often sat on my own and can see his face looking back it brings tears to my eyes every time. RIP Dad you are missed every day xxx

It's not about hopelessly fighting against the inevitability of death. It's about having a reason to want to fight. To be one who truly appreciates life. To appreciate your own experience, to appreciate yourself and what you can offer the world, and to appreciate the world and the chance that you have to know it.
There is nothing to come of raging against the dying of the light. But to have a will to rage speaks volumes about you and the life you've lived.

Dylan Thomas was a master, who died too young. He wrote this for his dying father, and used the very strict form of this style of poem, called a villanelle, to help himself arrange his thoughs. Thomas wrote for his words to be spoken and heard. This is a great reading... such gravitas and majesty, coveying the intention of the author for sorrow and joy to be experienced together. For any who haven’t, find Dylan Thomas’ reading of this.

    Best speech ever created.
    Lyrics:
Do not go gentle into that good night
Old age should burn and rave at close of day
Rage, rage against the dying of the light
Though wise men at their end know dark is right
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night
Good men, the last wave, by crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay
Rage, rage against the dying of the light
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight
And learned too late, they grieved it on its way
Do not go gentle into that good night
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay
Rage, rage against the dying of the light
And you, my father, there on the sad height
Curse, bless me now with yourt fierce tears I pray
Do not go gentle into that good night
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Here Is a Poem I wrote called...
    Love Reborn
It Is a night of sorrow,
    A song of dark desire,
    Wolves vent their loneliness,
    The beautiful one awakes.
Wisps of death shrouds her deathly form,
    a timeless fear
Her face Is paler than white,
    Dark circles surround her eyes,
Her eyes were sinister & lifeless,
Veiling her pain & silent cries,
Her raven black hair cascades over milk-white shoulders,
    She walks to approach me,
& her full rep lips slightly part to gently touch mine,
As we share a kiss under the dark, shining, moonlight sky,
    After a night of sharing,
    I remember her.
