- Camping in the wind and rain. Yep, a nice summer trip turned pretty ugly out on Old Winchester Hill. Which is an ancient hill fort. following the South Downs way from Winchester this hill fort sits about 15 miles into the 100 mile trip.
This was a recon trip to check out some of the route for the summer hike along the whole of the South Downs way with Warren from @Linleys
I was also testing some of the gear I plan to use, including the Lanshan 1 tent. Which faced a proper test in the rain and wind on an exposed hill top.

I know exactly what you mean about not caring.
I’ve not been on an overnighter since April and I couldn’t care if I get four seasons in one day next week or, get bitten by a tiger or squashed by a rock. I’m out 😁

Good old reliable, trustworthy Warren who can supply you with cake & hot custard even when lightweight camping in atrocious weather. Good Luck with the full walk in August.

I really hope that you finish this. It's so much more of a challenge when you're not someone who walks these distances regularly. The pain is pretty bad doesn't it. I'm walking an ultra challenge from Eastbourne to Arundel in 2wks 100km. I'm not fit and kind of dreading it lol the only solace is that I completed the IOW 106km a couple of years ago.
I need to see you complete this to get me inspired buddy.

G'day Dan, Warren, nice trip within Itself. I do dig the history, including railways and glad to hear the wildflowers have been considered too !!!!! anyway, a bitta recon and good gear test, (fetching, an all Warren), for ....... did you say 100 mile .......... better you than me mate ; )

I used to live in Easton near Winchester ..but I also used to live in Australia
..so I used to dynamite the trout in the river Itchen ..no wonder those posh chaps couldn't hook
a Scarlet ! lol.. When they cut the M3 through the Worthy Down I was devastated.. I divorced my
girlfriend and married my wig !! .. lol

I hope so too.. I don't really want to carry my heavy-duty waterproofs.
Great test for the tent though. Really pleased with that.
When I did the south downs way last year I couldn't camp there. There were simply too many people about. I had to camp in the woods bit.
Also carry 3 ltrs of water with you. The taps can be quite spread out at times and they don't always work.
That's why we went to test it out.. the woods are our secondary option. I imagine on a sunny evening it may be busy.. depending on what night of the week it is.
The Shoe Inn seems to be very popular. What weather, I think I wouldve gone home or B&B.

Hi Dan, so you and Mr linley were in my neck of the woods. I have spent many nights on and around Old Winnie Hill mate, cracking place no matter the weather, but superb when the suns out bud .

Do you still use that hand free umbrella? I’m considering buying it and you have review of it 4 years ago but in this video you’re not using it anymore. Why if I may ask?
I'm practicing for an ultralight trip. I still have the umbrella and use it on occasion. But it won't be part of my ultralight set up.
