More Dream Theater, Rush And Iron Maiden next week as well as some new bands! We've got a lot of great suggestions and are working hard to film, edit and keep the content flow consistent. Thanks to all the subscribers and to all who have commented with suggestions, tips, and just general thoughts. We appreciate the support very much!
Absolutely. Operation Mindcrime was his baby. I love his guitar style. As a guitar player myself, he offered so much. A lot of neat modulations and chord progressions on Mindcrime in particular, but really all of his stuff. This guy talked about Chris's solo but his rhythm guitar was incredible. Michael too. And the rhythm section, second to none. I heard, though I don't know, he quit because they were giving him grief over the writing on "Hear In The Now Frontier." I liked it fine. Their goal, as I understood it, was to write from every different metal genre. So, it didn't have the same commercial success, it still had its qualities. My thoughts anyway, miss them.
Power, Range, Stage presence. Geoff had it all back then. Arguably one of the most underrated singers in Rock history. Good to see new generations appreciating his vocal ability.
Baltimore MD . It was summer of 84 and my friend told me Queensryche was playing Hammerjacks .. Paid five bucks at the door and wandered around and found a seat .. It was a bar overlooking the left side of the stage , Pulled up a stool and waited .. Then it happened . I was flipping out and so excited , I couldn't believe the clarity and I couldn't believe the vantage of being a few feet away and overlooking this amazing spectacle . .During this song , Geoff kept on looking at me and pointing " Take Hold " and then , Then he climbed up to me atop the PA system , Shook my hand and stayed with me during the lead .. Something I will never forget . I was fateful to me .. I needed that lift in life to keep going , To dream big and fight .. Last year I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and giving a few months to live . Throughout my experience in this horror . I would play this song , remember that night and cry Take Hold .. For some miracle . The tumors on my brain have vanished and I live ..
That's awesome " Geoff Tate" is the man and a humble human being who was blessed with a god given gift" and it sounds like it may have blessed you to" I wish you continued strength
I saw Queensryche on this tour in 1983....this was the encore....THE ENCORE! They were flawless. Geoff was untouchable in the 80s, and the band has never been the same since DeGarmo left....
One of the best, if not the best voice in any genre of music. I was lucky enough to see Queensryche live 3 times in the 80s and he was spot on every time. One of my favorite albums of all time is Operation Mindcrime.
This song never gets old! 6:07 the goosebumps are in full mode! I've seen these guys live several times live starting back in the way early 90's and and they never disappoint!
From what I've read here on YT, this was the SECOND show of the day.....last song....encore. This is after doing the set list twice in one day!!!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it.....Now the performance is even more mind blowing and impressive!!
And the best thing with Queensryche was back in the 80's they toured all the time, literally! They were considered an opening band, which made it good for there fans. Because we got to see them like 3 times back in 1984. We never complained.
I’m so glad I lived through the 80s and grew up listening to this music as a kid and teen. 80s were absolutely the best and I mean the best for music. 80s Rock Rules!
Geoff Tate... the best voice in metal, EVER! His range was mind blowing. I saw this tour way back when, and have seen QR many times since. When you get the chance, you must listen to the album which this great song is from, 'The Warning'. It is considered, in many circles, one of the best metal albums ever recorded, and helped usher in the genre of progressive metal! It is a 'tour de force' recording!
Guess what? I used to call him Geoffy because every time they came to my town, I was there. I’m pretty sure he knew who I was as an audience member because I was very responsive, loud and physical. I didn’t just sit there. I was a fan from the very beginning and have seen them live I think about 21 times. Geoff would respond to me from the stage and I think he started to recognize me as a fixture when they toured TEXAS. So, I felt kinda like we knew each other and I nicknamed him Geoffy. They always played clean live and put on a great show. But some nights they are really ON and it bumps up a notch. Those are the shows you want to be at. Full Power live energy with the right vibe. The Band IS ON!! ROCK PRIVILEGE!!
Queensryche with a devastating live performance. The best live rock vocal of all time. Just a timeless fantastic song. Thank you for this one! Geoff Tate has been on tour for the last few years, with no original members, and is still absolutely fantastic. Covid shut sown his 2020 tour, but there are lots of videos.
Range, musicality, expressiveness, showmanship. The whole package. The word "operatic" is overused in popular music context (like "symphonic"), but it's the one that come to my mind, not because his technique but due to the richness of his phrasing. Queensryche was the unclassifiable result of musicians that grew up loving and listening to opera (Tate's aunt was a singer), Pink Floyd, Rush and other music styles and had the fresh influence of the NWOBHM. And let those influences emerge in their songs.
Early Queensryche is what got me hooked back then. I heard their song, from their first album, "Queen of the Reich"...and went straight out to buy it. This song is on their album Warning,, and I went out and got it as soon as I knew it was available. You REALLY do want to react to their song "Queen of the Reich" from 1983.
Like others have said, Roads to Madness and the live video of Suite Sister Mary. Be sure to check out the lyrics to these songs too because they are amazing in their own right. We miss you Chris DeGarmo!
I derive great satisfaction from vids like this, where younger viewers are taking in quality music for the first time and reacting in exactly the same manner as so many of us did when songs like this debuted (I was in my mid-late teens when this album was released and had been a fan of theirs since their first E.P.). Just proves that greatness transcends time and will always be appreciated. I take a bit of umbrage to your assessment that the solos are never mind-blowing. Trust me, they have the skill to MELT your mind, if ever they wished, but they were far more concerned (thankfully) with melody and song-structure.
I love the fact that people are still finding this music. I guess having heard it when it was new skews my view of it. I still get goosebumps every time I hear and see it. Thanks for the reaction guys.
I LOVE your reaction at 6:07 LOL. We all reacted that way the first time we heard/saw this s incredible performance. I was lucky to see Queensryche several times in the 1980s and early 90s, and they were this good every time (note Chris de Garmo's backing vocals are kick-ass too). I would sell my soul to sing like 1984 Geoff Tate for just one day. Absolutely untouchable.
I subbed just now for this reaction. Geoff Tate hitting that E5 numerous times here (the holy grail for baritone/tenor vocalists). Cant wait to watch this channel grow. Keep the music alive my peeps!!
E5 is definitely the holy grail for mere mortals.....Then there is Dimash.....a Demi-God who regularly hits E6, and has topped out at a D8 whistle note in a live concert.
@@rednab2001 Tate then goes and land a D2 on Silent Lucidity. Ridiculous range he still has, since he's doing this song and Queen of the Reich again live.
I got to see Queensryche twice, once in '89 when they opened for Metallica here in Halifax and again on the same bill with Iron Maiden and Rob Halford in Quebec City in '00. Now that was a night of pure metal vocalists Bruce, Geoff and Rob all in one concert, it was amazing... By the way their first album The Warning is way underrated.
Geoff Tate has the best voice I ever heard. Take Hold of the Flame makes the hair stand on my arms. He could shatter a glass. I still don't think he got the recognition he should have. The last show I saw was in February 2020 and he still has it.
This is supernatural to me in every way including the message. I believe THAT is why everyone’s mind is blown when they see this particular concert. The energy amplified was incredible . Take responsibility and take hold of that VIOLET FLAME!!!
Queensryche is one of the most overlooked bands when it comes to talent. They're ALL great...that is all........... "Another Rainy Night" and "Jet City Woman" are excellent also...
i was a head banger in high school and was 15 i herd the lady wore black and was sold .i went to tower records and bought the import and it only had two songs which i still have .Tate is a once in a generation type voice PERIOD
This song came out when I was 15 and blew my mind. Singing a Queensryche song is always a challenge because Geoff Tate set the bar so high. You guys are a cute couple. Keep having fun together.
I'm sure people have already suggested this, but reacting to Operation: Mindcrime in its entirety is a must. It's a concept album and tell a pretty cool, gritty story with amazing music, lyrics and of course vocals. I was fortunate enough to see them live perform the album in its entirety. Even more amazing live!
Never gets old, seeing the expressions of those hearing this performance. There has never been and will likely never be a vocalist able to match peak Tate. Saw Queensryche live several times. Every time, he was simply unreal.
This is such an amazing song, my personal favorite, Geoff Tate is a God!!! I remember seeing Queensryche in 84 at a bar in Nanuet, NY, called Manhattans, and I didn't even know who they were...just unbelievable...
Saw them at Hammy Odeon on Empire tour, they did entire Mindcrime album. Hairs on my neck standing up thinking about it! Greatest live performance I've ever seen
Geoff Tate live is AMAZING. So glad you guys and so many others are discovering some of the greatest bands ever. I saw Queensrych for the first time in 1984, a small club before they broke out. They weren't on MTV yet, but once they made their first music video, club days were over and it was welcome to the arena show. Keep digging! So many great bands from the metal years.
Geoff Tate still sounded like this when I saw Queensryche at the Gorge in Washington in 1995. He is the most amazing vocalist I have ever heard other than Steve Perry. Geoff stated in an interview he wanted to be an opera singer but he was still waiting. What a voice and an amazing performer especially in the song "Suite Sister Mary". A must watch..
This was the time they opened up for KISS... Saw them and was amazed...they didn't have their hit songs yet..but they rocked and got everyone's attention. Little did I know what was to become.
Geoff Tate was an absolute god in the 1980's.. contender for best male vocalist on the planet. Unfortunately he lost much of his voice going into the 90's. Their best music is also from Tate's "strong era" (in my opinion, it is very very difficult to top a successive album chain of "The Warning", "Rage For Order", and "Operation Mindcrime" (one of the best albums i've ever heard, still gives me chills to this day).
agree completely on those 3 albums and Operation Mindcrime is still my go to cd for road trips. It came out the year I left for college and my roommate and I were complete Queensryche fanatics. Lost my friend 4 years ago, and these bring back such good memories of youth, when we were invincible and would live forever. Now in my 50's, I appreciate what a special time that was.
The Warning , Operation Mindcrime, and Empire are my favourite albums. Loved Take hold of the flame back then , still my favourite Ryche song all these years later. Missed Chris Degarmo when he left.
I was fortunate to see this tour and just about all their tours in Sacramento, CA. And yes, they are this good. They got even better (if possible) on the Rage, Mindcrime and Building Empires tours. The Empire tour is when they peaked....playing the Operation Mindcrime in it's entirely. Geoff Tate's stage performance made you believe the Mindcrime story. Check out the Empire live concert.
As a vocal coach, I can assure you that This man has trained and practiced extremely hard to achieve the magnificent head voice he has, and then drop to the warm baritone! I don't know what this man is doing today, but if he had a decent clean lifestyle I'm sure he probably still sounds great!
Imagine being a young US Navy cat exploring Japan and finding the show... and getting seats on 8th row! Unreal!!! Keep in mind it was the last song of a 2 hour set! Love watching you younguns discovering Geoff!!!
I lived during their heyday. I was 14 when their EP first came out in 83. I'm a fan of Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Ronnie James Dio. I've always felt like Geoff's voice was the overall best of the bunch. Great reaction, btw. I love seeing young people's reactions to the classic greats! Cheers!
When I saw Queensryche Geoff was playing basketball while singing. In Memphis. It was in my top five shows I have ever seen, and I have seen some classics
I love watching the look on your faces by the lead in you guys just look at each other ,,,,they won mtv basement tapes 1984 I saw them in 84 in Seattle ,they open for matelica ,,, operation mindcrime it an opera (best ever made)
I saw them four times on the Empire tour. 6-7 years after this. From the second show of the US tour, to the third to last, they did this song as an encore each time. Sounded just like this all those years later. Plus all of Empire and Operation Mindcrime, both in their entirety, complete with appropriate theatrics. Amazing! By the way, Geoff acted out the part of Nikki from Mincrime while singing it. It was basically a rock opera. He even shot a hoop on "Best I Can" from Empire. So, yeah, he had great interaction. There is a concert video they released of "Operation Livecrime." Worth the watch if you are a fan and can find a copy. Its exactly what I saw with few edits. And Pamela Moore sung live on "Suite Sister Mary" at that concert. Madison Wisconsin, I think. I took my boy to see them years later, after Chris left. Geoff could still do this song. Although not quite as high, but almost. Only a very familiar ear could tell, he transposed it so professionally. Man, I miss them and that entire era.
I could name sooo many songs but if I had to choose: Roads to Madness...hands down showcases the complete package that is Geoff Tate and Queensryche. You would have to stick with the studio version as I haven't found a live version with decent sound quality.
There's not a good quality version, but this one is very enjoyable and gives us a good idea of how great they were in concert: th-cam.com/video/E_Z0LAI8_rk/w-d-xo.html
Queensryche got their name from the song Queen of the reich so hope you react to that one. When the band started out they were killing it right away on first album.
I would recommend the studio version of "The Lady Wore Black"... My personal Queensryche favorite. "Take Hold of the Flame" does come in at a very close second place though.
Interesting side note... Geoff mentioned some years later that he and the band were actually buzzed on stage during these Tokyo performances after trying to experience the city and imbibing too much sáke.
I just want to thank you for doing reactions to more Queensryche then just Take Hold of the Flame. I knew you would have to get to this one at some point but this seems to be all people review from them. Yes, it is an amazing performance from Geoff but when they mature into Operation Mindcrime, Empire, Promised Land and Hear in the Now Frontier they, as a band just get better. Unfortunately when Chis DeGarmo left it broke my heart and you can instantly tell the difference between every album with Chis and every album after because he wrote so much of the music. Please keep going with the Queensryche. Thank you.
It really sucks that I had only discovered Queensryche by the time Empire was released. Geoff definitely had an incredible vocal range and projection years before then. It's simply not the same hearing a recording, live is the best! Thanks for the review

One of my greatest pleasures is watching someone hear Queensryche (Tate/Degarmo) for the first time.
Mine too.
Special note: this was the 2nd to last song. So, all night singing and still had the control at the end.
The second show of the night too
Makes even more incredible. No one could get close to Geoff live when he was in his prime.
It's one of their best song. And they have many.🤩🤩🤩
Yes it was, and yes he sure did. He/they were Amazing.
And the closer was Queen of the Reich.
You guys just witnessed the greatest live performance in the freaking history of music. Period. 😊👌👍😉😁👏

I agree... I was there... on my first deployment in the Navy stopping in Japan and getting tickets last minute!

agree completely on those 3 albums and Operation Mindcrime is still my go to cd for road trips. It came out the year I left for college and my roommate and I were complete Queensryche fanatics. Lost my friend 4 years ago, and these bring back such good memories of youth, when we were invincible and would live forever. Now in my 50's, I appreciate what a special time that was.
PlacidDragon I saw Tate last fall do mindcrime in its entirety and I think he pulled it off brilliantly.
his vocal transitions are flawless. Great band.
Saw them live supporting DIO in the UK in ‘84 they were outstanding and so was DIO! I’ve never forgotten that night 😎
Also have to remember that this is one of the last songs of their set in this concert and his voice is just as strong as the beginning.
I saw Queensryche on this tour when they opened up for KISS in November 1984 on Long Island in NY. It was my first concert ever; I was 14.
:) This song made me a fan back in the 80s :) i love his voice and the band :)
Saw them warm up for Metallica 'And Justice For All' tour and they were doing 'Operation Mindcrime'. Great concert!
I dont drink coffe in the morning to wake up , i listen this song and i can do everything , POWER !!
queensryche - blinded
The Warning , Operation Mindcrime, and Empire are my favourite albums. Loved Take hold of the flame back then , still my favourite Ryche song all these years later. Missed Chris Degarmo when he left.
what makes this even more impressive...this was an encore song
If. What could have been.
One the best to ever live singing right there
Imagine being a young US Navy cat exploring Japan and finding the show... and getting seats on 8th row!
Cheers!
ROADS TO MADNESS studio version lyrics video
This song is the very definition of Epic and virtually impossible to replicate live
Suite Sister Mary gets my vote. All of Operation Mindcrime is fantastic really...
The Livecrime version is out of this world!
@@dirtpile Agreed!
Best toune for me
Please react to the album version of Queensryche's Roads to Madness.
I think that is Geoff's finest moment vocally.
Epic song
Please do any one of the following next - Eyes of a stranger , Jet City Woman, Empire, Silent Lucidity, Lady Wore Black , Revolution Calling.
Love the first one that you suggested
They were my 1st live concert in 1983 in LA
Nice to see jaw dropping reactions to the artists I knew where kick ass 35 years ago!
1984 I was 17 & saw this tour 👍 the warning tour 👍👍🤘 omg beyond awesome 🤘🤘🤘
This band should have been HUGE much bigger than they were
These guys were awesome live ... miss the original lineup
Saw queensryche in concert they were mind blowing
I saw them in 1988 in concert they are That good. Michigan.
I could name sooo many songs but if I had to choose:
Roads to Madness...hands down showcases the complete package that is Geoff Tate and Queensryche. You would have to stick with the studio version as I haven't found a live version with decent sound quality.
There's not a good quality version, but this one is very enjoyable and gives us a good idea of how great they were in concert:

@@jlmso11568 - damn thats a good quality version. Best QR song ever.
I agree my Ryche brother
Queensryche got their name from the song Queen of the reich so hope you react to that one. When the band started out they were killing it right away on first album.
Hey guys i saw this concert in the 80's at the Corpus Christi Texas Colosseum. He is one the best influence s
I would recommend the studio version of "The Lady Wore Black"... My personal Queensryche favorite. "Take Hold of the Flame" does come in at a very close second place though.
Interesting side note... Geoff mentioned some years later that he and the band were actually buzzed on stage during these Tokyo performances after trying to experience the city and imbibing too much sáke.
great reaction guys. BTW your wife has an impeccable smile.
Geoff has a natural baritone voice.....and the scariest part of his vocals is he can go real low if he wants to.
Geoff Tate was a beast indeed! Let's not forget about 'I Don't Believe In Love' another masterpiece of a song .
Thanks for you passion!
1:37 what the hell did I just hear?!? He’s singing all perdy, then BAM!!! He hits you in the face with a perfect E5.
Thank you.
I recommend Queensryche "Suit Sister Mary Live" and also Nightwish "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken 2013.
It really sucks that I had only discovered Queensryche by the time Empire was released. Geoff definitely had an incredible vocal range and projection years before then. It's simply not the same hearing a recording, live is the best!
Thanks for the review
This was my 1st concert in' 84 they opened for kiss I was 14
That's so cool. I bet it was an awesome time!
