    Ok so this isn't quite Harry Nilsson In Concert - yes, he's playing live but there's no audience. The audience you see have been edited in from other shows in the series. Why? Harry didn't do live concerts and so it makes this UK TV show first broadcast on New Years Day 1972 even more special. I love the version of "Life Line" in 'The Point' but the rendition here is truly heartbreaking and is my favourite Nilsson performance.
    This show was recorded in 1971 at the BBC Television Theatre (now the Shepherd's Bush Empire). It is interesting as it shows Harry in the middle of the two main phases of his career - the early whimsical songs ('67-'71) followed by the later harder-edged period ('71 onwards).
    There are songs here from Harry's albums to date ('Without Her' and '1941' are from 'Pandemonium Shadow Show', 'Mr Richland's Favourite Song' and 'One' are from 'Aerial Ballet', 'Life Line', 'Think About Your Troubles' and 'Are You Sleeping?' are from 'The Point', 'Gotta Get Up' and 'Coconut' are from 'Nilsson Schmilsson'.) 'Joy' appears here in an early version - it wouldn't be recorded until the following year's 'Son Of Schmilsson' - and whilst not officially released at the time, a version of 'Walk Right Back' has appeared on the excellent Nilsson RCA box set (which you must buy immediately if you don't already own it).

    Nilsson remains one of the most under-appreciated artists of his time. Those who know his work greatly admire it. Sadly, few outside my generation remember what a freaking phenomenon he was. "Didn't he party with Lennon?" is the most cogent response I receive when I mention his name. Thank you for posting this. Perhaps some young musicians may find it and be inspired.

    • @acglover7349
      @acglover7349 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I just had to reply to this. How old are the idiots asking if he "partied with Lennon"? I am in my late 30's yet never liked much of my own generation's stuff, save some really good "alternative" music. Most of the artists I like, love, admire, what have you, are from other eras. Whether Classical from 1800s or the great 60s-70s stuff. How anyone doesn't know Harry Nilsson makes me so sad. I'm crying right now hearing his voice and thinking of my mum, who died when I was in my late teens. Most of what I like is influenced from her, and I ain't complaining. I was born too late.

    My girlfriend and I loved his music. When I watched this video I'm reminded so forcefully of that time in the early and mid-70s. He sang our songs of love and they live forever, even though he didn't and neither did she. She left me for some other guy, then years later got killed in a horrible car ccident beneath Mr. Hood in Oregon. Somehow I think that wherever she is, she's still humming his beautiful songs........and maybe he is, too.

    Everybody's talking hooked me. Figured out an arrangement and was proud. Then I got a piano, and ended up going on a deep dive of his work because of gotta get up, and I fell in love. He was an amazing artist.

    Greatest show of pure musical talent around....Harry really played like he was completely alone and so totally engrossed in his musical world that nothing else exsisted to him....AMAZING...

    Thanks for posting that, wow, what an absolute gem. Bought The Point about 40 years ago, still love it today and now after seeing that and reading informative comments on here will invest more of his music and research more about the man himself. Lifeline is just awesome, what a unique and gifted singer, song writer. What really saddens me is that if he started out today he wouldn't get past the X Factor auditions. Thanks again.

    It's thoughtful posts like this that provide a wistful connection to the past that give the Internet a good name....I'm a fossil and fondly remember Harry from Courtship through Popeye etcetera...One of a kind.... A killer sweet voice coupled with a rapier wit...Would LOVED to see him perform live. Thanks so much "for the memories"!!

    I knew Nilsson's most famous songs, as everyone does, but very little about the man. I just watched the documentary about his life and became fascinated. What an extraordinary talent and what a bittersweet life he led. I came away with respect for his musicality and compassion for his pain. It seems as if he spent his whole life trying to get over the self-hatred caused by his father's abandonment of him. No matter how great his musical achievements, it was never enough to counter the torment. He basically destroyed himself, as if he didn't believe he was worthy of his own gifts. But, as is so often the case, he probably wouldn't have produced such amazing work if he hadn't been so troubled.

      +zolluuu I just watched that Documentary last night. Very interesting. I have his essential hits playing in my car. I agree with you that he probably wouldn't have produced such amazing work if he hadn't been so troubled.

    This is incredible, one of my favorite videos on all of TH-cam, and it's the closest thing to seeing him in concert that exists . . . but he's not playing in front of an audience here, or anywhere, because he never toured or played live concerts. This is all explained by the poster I thought I'd just say it again in the comments. This is the closest we'll ever get to live Nilsson.
